2010 Preview Part 4! The Genius Directors!

Published at:  Jan 07, 2010 12:08:33 AM CST

Ahoy, squirts! Quint here with the next and most likely last installment of the 2010 preview. This one’s not genre-specific… there are thrillers, comedies, dramas and horror movies below. What all the movies have in common are genius directors.

Genius by my own estimation, of course. You might not agree. That’s fine. You’re all wrong, but I’m okay with that. heh. Seriously, each one of these directors means an automatic watch from me. It doesn’t matter if it’s a feature, animated movie, documentary, radio play… don’t care. And yes, most of them have had a stinker or two under their belts, but I ain’t no fair weather fan!

Let’s look at the real good stuff coming sometime in 2010!

INCEPTION (July 16, 2010)

I hadn’t seen the second trailer for Inception until just this very moment when I embedded it in this article. I was holding out to see it on the big screen, but I’ve been to a couple three movies since it came out and still haven’t gotten it. My feelings? I feel like applauding the damn trailer. Christopher Nolan hasn’t made a bad film yet and while I don’t know what the fuck is going on in the below trailer I know it’s beautiful and looks fucking awesome. The city folding in on itself? I wish I could watch this movie right now.

THE SOCIAL NETWORK (October 15, 2010)

David Fincher has a movie coming out this year. About Facebook. Yeah, that’s right. And it’s going to be fucking great. Know how I know this? Well, besides that it’s David Fincher, the script was written by Aaron Sorkin and we’re getting a really great cast to tell us the crazy behind the scenes story of how Facebook came to be. The cast features Jesse Eisenberg, young British superstar in the making Andrew Garfield, Justin Timberlake, Rashida Jones, Max Minghella and Joseph Mazzello. I’m actually excited to see Mazzello make his return this year. I thought he was a good kid actor that just kind of disappeared, but now he has a David Fincher movie and the lead in the Band of Brothers follow-up series THE PACIFIC. Good on him!

THE FIGHTER (TBD 2010)

Originally scheduled to be a Darren Aronofsky drama about boxer “Irish” Mickey Ward, the flick languished for a while before Aronofsky left and David O. Russell came on board. The dude might not be as proven as Fincher, but Russell’s always an interesting director… anyone who has seen those I HEART HUCKABEES leaked fights knows this to be true. So you have a boxing drama starring Mark Wahlberg, Christian Bale, Amy Adams and Melissa Leo. I bet the set was very calm and happy and all that, but I’d love to imagine Bale and Russell going at it like rabid pitbulls. But that’s because I’m an asshole, not because I want to see a trouble picture. Basically the story tells of Ward’s rise to stardom as his half-brother and trainer (Bale) falls from glory and becomes addicted to crack. Here’s a bit of the real “Irish” Mickey Ward:

SHUTTER ISLAND (February 19, 2010)

If I wasn’t lucky enough to have seen this movie at BNAT it still would have figured high on my list of anticipated 2010 films. Martin Scorsese doing a creepy psychological thriller? A period film set in a mental institution? Starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Mark Ruffalo and Ben Kingsley? Yes, it’s gorgeous, yes it’s fun… yes, it has a bit of a talky “let me explain everything” ending, but it’s a fine example of why Scorsese is one of our best working filmmakers.

GREEN ZONE (March 12, 2010)

The trailer for Paul Greengrass’ GREEN ZONE is linked below… but don’t watch it if you haven’t already. I get the distinct feeling this is one of those “entire movie in 90 seconds” trailers. Scripted by Brian Helgeland and starring Matt Damon as a US Army officer in the Middle East, hunting down WMDs. It looks like a Bourne style action thriller set against the backdrop of the current war. Damon has a lot of good back-up… Greg Kinnear, Jason Isaacs, Amy Ryan and Brendan Gleeson to name a few.

HEREAFTER (December 2010)

We follow Matt Damon over to Clint Eastwood’s next. I liked Invictus a lot (even if I still couldn’t tell you what happens in a rugby match besides a bunch of dudes hugging each other and kicking the ball seemingly at random), which is good because I haven’t been much of a fan of his latest run. Let’s just say I’ve liked a lot of his stuff okay and just plain didn’t like some of it (I’m looking at you FLAGS OF OUR FATHERS). This film marks Eastwood’s first foray into the “supernatural thriller” genre and stars Damon, Bryce Dallas Howard and Cecile De France as three people “who are touched by death in different ways.” I don’t know what that means, but I like it. Frank Marshall, Kathleen Kennedy and Steven Spielberg produce.

THE TREE OF LIFE (??? 2010-ish, maybe)

Terrence Malick’s long in the works which may or may not be on my Anticipated Flicks of 2011. The dude takes his time. And he can afford to even in the current studio system because he’s got both Brad Pitt and Sean Penn. Set partially in the ‘50s and partially modern day the flick is about that moment in your life where childhood innocence recognizes the harsh reality of the world. Pitt plays the father in a family unit comprised of three boys, mom and dad. Mom teaches the kids about the wonder and purity of the world and dad tries to prepare them for what’s out there. Sean Penn plays one of the kids all growed up. At least I think so. Being a Terrence Malick movie you won’t really know until you’re watching it. I really hope the thing releases this year… Like really a lot…

BLACK SWAN (TBD 2010)

Darren Aronofsky is a kind and merciful God. I know this because he’s making this film with Natalie Portman and Mila Kunis. And they reportedly get it on. This film is a thriller about rival ballerinas… one of whom may or may not be real. Joining Kunis and Portman are Vincent Cassel, Barbara Hershey and Winona Ryder. All hail Aronofsky!

HOW DO YOU KNOW? (December 17, 2010)

James L. Brooks has a new film coming out, his first since the mild disappointment that was SPANGLISH. This Romantic comedy reunites Brooks with his AS GOOD AS IT GETS star Jack Nicholson. New to the family are Reese Witherspoon, Paul Rudd and Owen Wilson. The flick is about an executive (Rudd) and baseball pro (Wilson) vying for the same woman. The film could be about Jack Nicholson people watching in the park for 2 ½ hours and I’d still be there. Soooo…. Fffaarrrrr…. Awwwwwaaayyyy….

YOU WILL MEET A TALL DARK STRANGER (TBD 2010)

Woody Allen’s pulled himself out of a slump with a real run of great films. It’s oddly not popular to love MATCH POINT, but I did. It was a real departure for Allen. SCOOP was entertaining, but not all that memorable… thankfully he followed it up VICKI CHRISTINA BARCELONA and now he has this film coming. There aren’t a lot of details out there, but there’s a snippet from the trades that says it’s about the tangled love lives of a family. Anthony Hopkins, Naomi Watts, Josh Brolin, Antonio Banderas, Slumdog Millionaire’s Freida Pinto and Ewan Bremner star.

THE GREEN HORNET (December 22, 2010)

Technically I should have included this in the first article of remakes, reboots and sequels since this is just as much of a remake/reboot as The A-Team is of a classic and much loved television series, but I honestly consider Michel Gondry one of our great directors even if I was a bit underwhelmed by BE KIND REWIND. So, he joins the ranks in the final article with his redo of THE GREEN HORNET written by the Superbad duo of Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg, starring Rogen and Jay Chou as Kato with INGLOURIOUS BASTERDS’ Christoph Waltz as the baddie and featuring Cameron Diaz, Edward James Olmos, Tom Wilkinson and Eddie Furlong?!?

THE WARD (TBD 2010)

John Carpenter’s back, everybody! Why isn’t this a bigger deal? “Wah, wah, he made Ghosts of Mars.” Okay. I’ll trade you three awesome movies for Ghosts of Mars. ASSAULT ON PRECINCT 13, HALLOWEEN and THE FOG. “But he also made that horrible VILLAGE OF THE DAMNED remake!” Shame on you, wth Christopher Reeve barely cold. Too soon. But okay. I’ll trade you that one for another three awesome movies: ESCAPE FROM NEW YORK, BIG TROUBLE IN LITTLE CHINA, THE THING. “But he made IN THE MOUTH OF MADNESS…” Fuck you! That movie’s great. Vetoed. Let’s stop right there. You lose, I win. John Carpenter has had more great films than most other directors on this list that you people won’t bat an eye at. And now he’s returning to feature filmmaking, doing what is supposed to be a creepy little mindfuck of a movie about an institutionalized young woman terrorized by a ghost. The luscious Amber Heard plays said young terrorized woman. Here’s a brief behind the scenes clip I found on the internets… check out the corpse hand holding the big ass needle!

LES AVENTURES EXTRAORDINAIRES D’ADELE BLANC-SEC
(TBD US 2010, April 14, 2010 UK)

I cringed when I heard the rumors of Luc Besson commenting that he had such a good time making his animated movies that he was going to quit making live action movies… And then out of the blue comes the trailer for this movie, a kind of Indiana Jones-ish pulpy adventure story about a female novelist and, I guess, a Pterodactyl flying over period Paris. I know only the title, that it’s based on a well known French comic and what I see in the trailer. That’s all I need. It’s Luc Besson! And he’s still got some live action left in him!

Well, that about wraps it up. Sorry if I overlooked something major, but I am only one man… who did all that just to turn right around and start up his Sundance Preview article of a good 45-50 titles that I hope to see in my 10 days in Park City.

Hope you folks enjoyed the series! If you missed any here are the first three:

The list is a nice reminder of all the great treats for this year. "Inception" is at the top of my list followed by "tree of life" which has literally taken forever. Curious about "Black Swan." One that wasn't mentioned on anywhere was one I was told recently to check out called "Revenge". I saw it on whatisyourrevenge . com It looked pretty bad ass, could be a great time at the movies. All great directors from the 70s suck now.

    by lochkray

Except Scorcese, for some odd reason. Spielberg? Doing good with hard drama, but his "magical" movies have been pretty weak lately. Coppola? The last relevant movie he did was Dracula - his sucky acting daughter from Godfather III has more credibility now. Lucas? Oh, George...I love you, but, man, the glory has faded. Carpenter? Case already made against him in the defense; Villiage of the Damned and Ghosts of Mars. And he was exec-producer of the Fog remake (if I recall), which was so awful it was beyond description. Anyway, that's my opinion.

I'm a pushover for classic Carpenter, but unfortunately I've seen the garbage he's made as well, and we all know what films I'm referring to. I'll give him another chance, though, because he might actually make a great movie again. The Ward might hit big like Drag me to Hell. It has that vibe. By the way, the craziest thing about The Thing is when Kurt pours whiskey in the chess wizard! How the hell will he get a replacement away out in the middle of nowhere? If the alien beastie hadn't shown up, I bet Kurt would have regretted that. I watched The Thing recently and there is actually plenty of scope for the prequel. We never see the faces of the Norwegians at the start, and there are a lot of interesting questions raised at the Norwegian base--the axe in the door, the suicide guy, the burned thing-corpse with the mutating face. Then the stuff with the Norwegians finding the ship and the alien. The whole plot is right there. Maybe there was more than one dog at the end, and the helicopter guys went after one, while another party of Norwegians went after a different dog, in the opposite direction. Maybe this second party ended up at a Russian ice base, to set up a direct sequel. There is potential here.

Glad to see you like In The Mouth Of Madness, an absolute classic, love that movie so much. Sam Neill is my favourite actor, and that is his finest performance. I remember the first time I saw it, really late one night, and the ending just freaked me out.

" Did I ever tell you my favourite colour was blue?"

And a little bit of trivia, the newspaper boy at the end of the movie, is none other than Star Wars' Hayden Christiansen!

She is a dramatic actress which is also proficient in action roles, not the other way around. Michelle Yeoh started as an action princess who grew into a fine dramatic actress with time.

Anybody who has Sam Neill as their favorite actor deserves respect. Have you seen him in the early 80s TV series REILEY? It was the first time i saw Neill as an actor. Same thing was with Michael Gambon for me, who is now one of my top favorite actors, and i first saw in a TV series called THE SINGING DETECTIVE.

    Escape from L.A. is underrated

    by asimovlives

Yes, there's some weird goofy shit in it, like the Tsunami surfing, but overall it's a darn entertaining and quite smart actioneer. I guess the reason many might not like it is because the movie pisses and shits on the neo-con fundie loonies. And rightly so, which is part of it's charm. And the ending is total balls of brass. And the best thing? They did not pussified Snake Plissken, in fact he's an ever bigger bastard then in Espace From New York. Which is as he should.

Have you seen the Possession, a really old Sam Neill flick, absolutely terrifying, makes In The Mouth Of Madness look tame, its banned in a lot of countries though. The freakiest film I have ever seen, I actually refused to watch it again! It was made in 1981 before Ace Of Spies.

Just to refresh tb'ers minds on the genius of James L Brooks - of course geniuses shouldnt need introductons - but here goes..
I'LL DO ANYTHING (1994). You all remember this one im sure. No? Well, you know it starred Nick Nolte.. What was it about? Um, well.
AS GOOD AS IT GETS (1997). Hey Jack Nicholson! Being cantankerous! Wearing sunglasses! 'Meet Marvin'! Ironically this Nicholson-love in is 'as good as it gets' for Brooks' career.
SPANGLISH (2004). It took the genius 7 years to come up with this one since his last movie... but im sure you all agree the results were worth it. You *did* see SPANGLISH right? Anyone? *tumbleweed blows across the plain*

How can you like movies and NOT admire Sam Neill as an actor, you may not like everything he does, but his work ethic is amazing, he gives it everything he has, even in the movie he is in doesn't measure up to his efforts. Event Horizon? Sorry, love that movie and it's Neill that makes it great for me. The rest of the cast is good, and it's surprising that Paul WS Anderson actually pulled of the haunted house in space thing, but Neill just makes that movie, I love when he steps into the shadows after he says "I am home" creepy, love it.

I wish the director cut had been finished, much gorier, alternative ending, over 30 mins longer, but all the footage was lost or destroyed.

I wonder though, if Sam Neill wasnt in the movie would it be half as good, because his performance in that movie is amazing.

I think it would have still been decent, but not nearly as good as it is with Neill in it. like I said the rest of the cast was good, but Neill's performance elevates that movie to a higher level.

Sam Neill is one of those excellent actors that never gets enough praise, he has been in some truly amazing movies, and even the not so great ones, his performance shines through.

He deserves more recognition, its nice to see him and his movies getting some respect on here.

... The Thing is a great movie ... and, fuck it, In the Mouth of Madness is a great movie. They Live is certainly great in its own little, idiosyncratic way. I agree that Carpenter is sometimes inconsistent with his mixture of dramatic scenes and scares (especially Prince of Darkness, which I love for all its creepiness and horrifying ideas; it feels like a first draft, though), but when he puts it together, there's greatness.

I fucking hate EVENT HORIZONT. I know that there's many at AICN who have a pronographic feticistic lust for that crap, but i don't care, the movie is dumb and stupid beyond the call of duty. Like many Paul WC Anderson movies, it has an interesting and potentially great premise, it starts pretty well, but soon degenerates into idioticy, and the ending is retarded beyond beleif. fuck Event Horizont. I hope Sam neill got a fat paycheck for his trouble. In all logic, Neill's character should had been the hero of the tale, but the fucking hack who "directed" that bullshit was too preocupied in ripping off ALIEN to even allow a moderatly new thought to cross his mind.

Alien rip off? Easy. The blue collar astronaut stuff. The ship as an haunting house stuff. Crew that goes investigate an unexpected stuff and follows a beacon. The death one by one of the crew, some of them in ventilation shafts just for the same of "hommage" (or because the director lacks imagination). Of course, the ending rips off FRIDAY THE 13TH. And the least said about the undestructable obnoxious useless black comedy relief character the better, which, thankfully, was absent in ALIEN.

List of depressing films I've gotten from this TB

    by sk229

So I've never seen In the Mouth of Madness, although I remember thinking the trailer was amazing... just never got round to seeing it. Ok, so that's on my list now. Then I see people talking about Possession, so I go over to IMDB, watch the insanely fucking strange trailer, and then start reading through the discussion boards and formulating a list of what people consider the 'most depressing/and or weirdest films ever made.' Here's the gems people mentioned and I haven't seen but intend to track down now, as a result of this discussion... it's gonna be a depressing as hell month at my house! And this, btw, proves to me that spending time here, while still wasting it somewhat, is nowhere near as much a waste of time or a black hole of narcissistic/self-absorbed despair as Facebook. Twitter, at least, you get some interesting links if you follow the right people. Facebook? I honestly don't see much positivity in it if I spend a lot of time there, which is why I no longer do. Here, it's great discussion about something we all love... movies! So here's that list: 1) Shura
    2) Come and See
    3) In the Mouth of Madness
    4) Possession
    5) Lilja 4ever Anyone seen any of these and/or have any others? I'm just going through a period where I love watching great, surreal/and or crazy shit that I've never heard of or did, but never tracked them down.

    by red ned lynch

...don't know if I'm telling you stuff you already know, but there was a recent remake of The Dunwich Horror with Combs and Stockwell. It's not...good, but it is Lovecraft. There's the silent Call of Cthulhu, which is interesting as an oddity. There's a no-budget version of Colour From the Dark that came out in 2008. It's...what it is. There's a movie called Unknown Beyond from a little earlier. It's 2001, made in Italy, and if you have a taste for later day Italian horror it may work for you. AM1200 is a short film, based on an original story but Lovecraftian enough that they ate it up at the Lovecraft festivals. It's only 40 minutes long, but it stars Ray Wise and it really is pretty fun. There's also Cthulhu from 2007, which is really slow, really low budget and well, hey, it's got Cthulhu in the title. The Thin on the Doorstep is also pretty no budget, but it isn't absolutely dreadful (though a lot of the acting in it is). There's a movie called Chill based on the story Cool Air. It has James Russo and that girl from the first two Hellraiser movies. Shunned House is based on some Lovecraft short stories. It's Italian and came out about five years ago. No absolutely dreadful. And there's another Italian movie that came out in 2005 called The Road To Lovecraft which is a Blair With style mockumentary of some film students or documentarians getting in over their heads. There are probably a bunch more I'm not listing, but if you've got a real hunger for Lovecraftian stuff, enough to put up with films that aren't...hmmm...in some cases watchable but in others just not great, there are a few leads that might be so obscure as to have fallen under your radar.

You have not known depression until you see COME AND SEE. It might be the harshest WWII movie i ever seen. You literally see a young 14 years old boy turn into an old man due to threshit he goes through in the movie. And all thanks to brillant acting. The movie is also notorious for being wholesome shot on steadycam, and for being the first movie which simulated a realistic hearing trauma caused by explosions. Spielberg loves the movie so much, he used that sound trick in COME AND SEE for his SAVING PRIVATE RYAN.The director felt he had used all his skills as a director that he considered it his final movie and never made another one until he died. The movie impressed his collegues so much, he became the president of RUSSICO (the russian body of all professionals working in film) to his death. And do yourself a favour, watch it in the original russian language with subtitles.

DARK STAR is quite something, isn't it? And truly, all that scwene with the volleyball monste,r it's like a whole packed ALIEN done for laughs. I guess Dan O' Bannon saw the serious potential for a whole really serious horror movie story from that sequence and basically expanded to a whole movie. Really, ALIEN is the "feed the alien" mosnter scene done without laughs.

    by eustisclay

...don't know if I'd say that. Just watched the first movie he directed, Play Misty for me, again and I love that movie. And I like The Outlaw Josey Wales better than Unforgiven. I actually prefer his earlier work, it's just that the critics have finally caught up to him. And as he has made a lot of good films lately, his peers from the seventies, excluding Scorsese, have either died, work infrequently, or just are doing inferior work. But I love his earlier, politically incorrect stuff. Just watched The Gauntlet on bluray and I love the scene where the woman on the train says "you wouldn't hit a girl" and ..BAM... a haymaker in the mouth. But speaking of westerns, where's the Coen's True Grit?

    by blakindigo

If you can try to see it projected. You might be able to find it at some museums repertory screenings. I've seen it twice and I can tell you it's a powerful, devastating film."In the Mouth of Madness" is a good movie, closer to Carpenter's "Prince of Darkness" but with a better ending, I think. And, "Possession" is a bit slow, so be prepared for that, but by the time you get to the ending(!)— let's just say, you'll either buy into what's happening or you'll be annoyed. Definitely worth seeing, just be patient with it.I haven't seen "Lilja 4ever" yet; it's on my list though.

Korean horror also packs qquite a punch. They rarely go for gore, but they are depressing and emotionally devastating. Many would mention A TALE OF TWO SISTERSHowever, there is also another lesser known korean horror movie called THE UNINVITED, which, i believe is one of the most depressing and sad horror movie i ever seen in my whole life. Also, the movie is very, very ambiguous, to the point that one might even doubt if the story really is an hororr story and the supernatural actually exists in the story. Still, as a drama, it's unrelentless. It's quite the downer and one of the very best horror movie i ever seen. Too bad it's so little known.

The 3rd movie is a strange weird SF movie that's total lunacy, and the better for it.

I think DOA 2 is pretty good. Maybe even the best of the saga. Certainly it's the most genteel, even pastoral at times. It's the only movie of the series where the two protagonists are actually friends and they don't compete or try to kill each other, but instead, they do a partnership. In fact, they have great chemistry together, you can believe this dudes have been friends since forever. As for the 3rd movie, while i think it's the weakest in the series, but what it migth lack in quality it compensates in weirdness and wackiness, which is part of it's charm. So, yeah, any of the DOA movies will provite lots of ways to have fun.

I'd say if you mention Carpenter as genius, then you better include Joe Dante. I still think The Howling is head and shoulders above Landis' Werewolf In London (Lets see who would be the better writer John Sayles or John Landis..hhmmmmmmm), and Gremlins is classic. The New Batch is the rare sequel that expands on the original AND is good. And I'm really fond of Innerspace and Matinee. Dante is such a movie geek (I remember getting issues of Castle Of Frankenstein magazine as a kid), who lucked out to become a great genre director.

    by eustisclay

... is way overlooked. It should be mentioned whenever any classic coming of age film discussion is brought up. Would absolutely love to see a collectors edition done on this flick(dvd or blu I don't care). It is especially memorable for those of us who were old enough to remember the "kiddee" matinees. I wasn't around for the Castle heydays, but do remember some saturdays where our local theater would have anywhere from 3to 5 horror flicks run all day. Some were a couple of years old(Dracula prince of darkness, Pit and the Pendulem) and some were terrible(Horror House, The Crimson Cult) but I loved them all. And as far as the best wwII movie, I don't know. You could argue Private Ryan, The Pianist, or any number of recent films. But what do you define as a WWII movie? It could be anything from the propaganda films of the 40's to comedies like the Great Dictator or To Be or Not To Be, through adventure films like The Dirty Dozen or The Eagle Has Landed. My own personal favorite will always be The Great Escape.

Why is Paul Greengrass on this list

    by franconeroluv

If my resume was two Bourne Movies, United 93, and a Decent TV movie, I would be proud of myself but I would not be anywhere near Genius. Not one of those works was mind-blowing and not one of them has had time to establish itself as a classic. Commercially successes do not equate to genius.
This man's work should not be compared to Scorcese and Allen and Malick. He should not even be compared to the "New generation" geniuses like Nolan, Gondry and Aronofsky. Not only are Greengrass' movie below these in terms of quality and impact but he has yet to create a story of his own. Robert Ludlem gave him the stories for two of his 4 successes, the other two are based on real life tragedies both of which rely on the extreme subject matter (as opposed to storytelling) to create compelling drama (in other words it is dramatic exploitation). I'm not saying he is a bad Director by any means, but come back in 10 years when he has create a story of his own and characters of his own and do so in a way the other director's would not have been able to, and then make it great. That's what makes you a Genius: Not only does your vision and artform have to be great, but it has to be unique to you... No one could make Woody Allen's movies as they are but Woody.

    Alien, Event Horizon etc

    by white_vader

and every Gothic mansion separate & pick-em-off - ALL of those things are based on Agatha Christie's Ten Little Niggers/Indians... it's become one of those basic story templates. Alien being of course the most awesome! Event Horizon pissed me off. Yes it had the Christie thing, but it was a film disproportionately respected by nerds for great production design. Which ironically enough is ALSO the "Alien" dupe. Everyone goes on about how incredible and ORIGINAL Alien is - and it's not in the least, they were just blindsided because no-one had seen anything that looked like Giger's stuff. That doesn't mean it's not the Gothic mansion/Christie thing though.

Note that I'm not slagging it at all, it IS a classic. I just take issue with everyone who ever held it up as some paragon of originality. EH should've been more honest and just remained a videogame though.

I'll have someone post in my name to let you all know whether or not I've killed myself by the time I get through Martyrs... I think I'll start with Inside, move onto Possession, then Mouth of Madness (take it down a notch, ya know?), then Come and See, followed by some random order of the rest, finally ending with Martyrs... that is, if I can even get my hands on most of them!

Something that bugs the fuck out of me about "Pterodactyls"...

    by burnhollywood

When I was growing up, I learned that a flying reptile from the Mesozoic (now extinct) was called a "pterosaur". The all-familiar twenty-foot wingspan version with the pickaxe shaped head was the "Pteranodon", while a "Pterodactylus" was in fact a puny little 20-30 in specimen, about the size of a crow...
In fact, there's no such scientific descriptor as "pterodactyl". A Pteranodon is a genus of suborder "Pterodactyloidea", true, but there's a full three syllables on the end getting left out, so that hardly falls under the misused descriptor of "pterodactyl"...
Anyway, stop sounding fucking illiterate and using the word "pterodactyl" when you mean "pterosaur". Are you going to get all your scientific knowledge from THE FLINSTONES? You probably didn't even know there isn't a brontosaurus anymore...

Paul Greengrass has been nmaking movies for mor ethen 20 years, you just so happen to know his most recent and higher profile stuff. And anybody who made a movie like UNITED 93 deserves the genious accolade any day of the week. And BOURNE SUPREMACY is everything an action movie shouod be and more. It's so influencial that even the James Bond saga took the hint from it. So, yeah, Paul Greengass deserves the high accolated that Quint bestowed to him. He really is one of the top best directors working today.

    Nasty In The Pasty

The reasons is that the real mystery and why INCEPTION is kept at such secrecy is that the movie is really a musical.

I admit that i did enjoyed GHOST OF MARS

    by asimovlives

Sure, hardly Carpenter's best, and in truth it's just a remake of ASSAULT OF PRECEINT 13, which itself is a remake of sorts of RIO BRAVO. And yet i can't bring myself to hate it, or even disparing it. I guess i just have a big soft spot for ol' Carpenter. i think everybody who grw up in the 80s and saw his movies back then can relate to that.

John Carpenter to direct BLOOD MERIDIAN

    by asimovlives

Carpentetr always dreamt of directing a western. Many of his action movies are in fact westerns in disguise. And he can be pretty harsh and cynic in his view of mankind and the world. So, he could be really good for BLOOD MERIDIAN. Though it seems the gig is already taken by somebody else.

I'm not attracted to watch depressing movies. I just prefer intelligent and good movies. And among those, many of them are of a darker mood.

    Greengrass

    by drsambeckett1984

Im really not sure two great movies ( United 93 and Bourne Supremacy ) qualify him to be a genius. Nolan is a genius. Speilberg is a genius. Darabont is a genius. Lucas is a genius.

Greengrass is a good director, not a genius

People called Spielberg a genius from Jaws foward. The thing is, it's enough ONE truly great movie made with an unique style or vision, which seems to reinvent something, to be seen as the work of a genious. Paul Greengrass, like nolan, are some of the very few directors working today who deserve to be called such. They are. They are truly top of the crop.

I don't think that Bourne Ultimatum is as good as Bourne Supremacy, but the movie has a brillance of it's own which makes it a superior action movie and far above the crop. and that in itself is a sign of brillance, if we take into account how the action genre is inundanted and taken over by the hacks and their miserable shit movies they make.

I think for me, Ultimatum was never going to better than Supremacy, I also found the story and film making style to be all over the place, tonally it didnt fit with the other two, and the staple car chase was a let down.

That said, I have only seen it once, maybe it deserves another viewing.

What do you think of Bourne 4?

another creepy/darkly moody movie i just remember

    by asimovlives

It's a french movie called INNOCENCE. The mood in that movie is to cut with an axe, so thick it is. And throughout the movie, there's this notion that creepy stuff is going on, to the point that as the movie progresses, more and more one feels that there is bad things to going to happen soon enough. and then there's the ending which totally different then one would expect. But it puts everything into perspective. but really, the creppy mood in that movie is pure Lynchian. Also has Marion Coutillard in a small role, before she became an international star.

    RE:AsimovLives

    by franconeroluv

Bourne is everything an action movie should be at best it was a Ronin rip off and at worst it was a pre-cursor the Ultimatum which was as lazy an effort as any action movie I've ever seen. United 93, at it's best was cliche drama that relied on real life tragedy for credibility. His only decent movie was Bloody Sunday and that was a TV movie. It is people like you who settle for mediocrity that allow movies like 'Crash', 'Gladiator', 'Braveheart', and 'Titanic' to be considered more than generic or subpar sheep food.
