Scott Pilgrim with a flaming katana!

Published at:  Jan 06, 2010 10:00:38 PM CST

Ahoy, squirts! Quint here. Edgar Wright's Scott Pilgrim movie was recently featured in my 2010 preview series... and for good reason. If I were forced to make a top 10 anticipated list (don't worry, I won't force yet another list on you) Scott Pilgrim would be high on that list. The Junior effort from Wright and the first time he's working from someone else's material, the flick is going to be fucking insane. Don't believe me? Behold Michael Cera wielding a katana ablaze with red fire:

Told you! Click either the above or below pic to make big. Fans of the comic... notice Gideon overlooking this fight?

The other photo released by Universal is one that was glimpsed in less res fashion in Wright's photo a day series. But here's the group:

Enjoy the glimpses! I hope this means the trailer's on its way!

Who would play the part of Michael Cera in all the movies that requires Michael Cera in them? Without the Michael Cera character, all movies involving befuddled nerd-geek-teens with a pure heart, filmed between 2005 and now, would be completely missing their main character. There would be a blank screen for extended periods, with nobody talking, and everybody in the audience would be going "Where's Michael Cera? Where's Michael Cera? This scene needs Michael Cera!"

    by yotzvonfrelnik

I'm confused about the facts myself. From what I've heard of the movie so far, they go all the way up through BOOK 5. What has me baffled is how they could make the movie covering book six as well, since it hasn't been released yet! Still, simple answer is that I guess O'Malley showed them the finished story in secret so once the book hits shelves in the next few months, fans can finish the tale and then go see the movie next Summer.
If anybody's got the straight dope though, please add!

The movie covers all seven exes, how ever seeing as the script was written before book five even existed, I think the movie will stray from the books after the events of book 4. So, one movie for the whole thing, to answer your question. This thing will be dense... but fucking great too, fingers crossed...

I'm not familiar with the comic, but my only problem is seeing Michael Cera being the lead in what otherwise will most likely be an extremely original film experience. I don't hate the guy, in fact I really like some of his work, but it feels like he's playing every akward film role out there. They might as well just name this movie Michael Cera vs. The World. I mean I'm sure even the fans of the comic would rather have an unknown actor in the part, or at least someone who's not the new flavor of the moment.

Jesus, have you ever seen nerds get to butthurt over a goddamn movie? Just because you assholes think your too cool to actually enjoy the film, doesn't mean it sucks. In fact, quite the contrary, it was one of the best sci-fi/adventure films of the decade, and it's unprecedented critical and commercial success proves that in spades. Really though there is nothing more pathetic then someone who can't stop talking about something they supposedly hate...I mean c'mon, bringing it up in a Scott Pilgrim thread? Get a fucking clue. It's more then fine if you didn't like the film, but move the fuck on. Odds are they actually really did enjoy the film, but in typical nerd fashion turned on it due to it's monster success. But actions speak louder then words, and just the fact that they keep bringing it up ad nauseum means Avatar has them in a strangehold. Bitches.

JUST FELL IN LOVE WITH THE COMICS, WORRIED ABOUT THIS MOVIE.....

    by tehcreepythinman

I've posted this before but it's worth repeating here. I’m not a big comic buff but knowing that Edgar Wright was making an adaptation of this comic series, which I was vaguely aware of, peaked my interest enough to get a hold of the first Vol. at my local library. PHUCING LOVED IT!!! So much so that I ordered all five Vol. off Amazon. This is a GREAT series of books and I absolutely love that it’s a very Canadian comic (Born and raised in Hamilton btw). Now, I was living in Scotland during the late 90’s and remember seeing Spaced when it first premiered on Channel 4 back in 1999. MASTERPIECE. The first series was seven episodes of complete and utter perfection and I will be forever grateful to Edgar Wright, Simon Pegg and Jessica Stevenson for making that incredible show. I liked series two but it’s Return of the Jedi, to the first series Empire Strikes Back, to use an analogy that Spaced fans should appreciate. When I heard that Wright and Pegg were making a zombie movie I almost came. Shaun of the Dead was a great movie and so was Hott Fuzz but the one thing I will say is that they don’t feel as well rounded as Spaced and I think that’s because Jessica Stevenson’s lack of participation. Having laid my geek cards out, I have to say that, based on everything that I’ve read, I’m worried about the movie adaptation of Scott Pilgrim. After reading the first five Vol.’s, Edgar Wright seems like the PERFECT person to helm a feature based on these comics. BUT, the problem I see with this movie is that they seem to be rushing it out. I have a theory as to why that would be but I’ll get to that later. First, it appears that this movie is based on, primarily, the first 3 comics. From what I understand, the screenplay was written after the release of number 3 and I can only assume that they were in pre-Production when number 4 was released. This means that they may have incorporated elements from number four during the late stages of Pre-production and even throughout shooting as re-writes often happen during the making of movies. However, this movie is very visual effects intensive, not to mention all the fight choreography involved, so it doesn’t seem likely that they would have been able to make much use of Vol. 4. I have nothing to do with this movie, so maybe I’m wrong, but I’m making my assumptions based on what I do know of film production, from what I’ve read over the years. The main point of contention that I have is that it’s been reported that, in the movie, Scott fights all seven exes. My issue with this is that they only had, virtually, half the story when they started scripting and it looks like Wright and his screenwriter (Michael Bacall, whoever the *beep* he is, seriously, the guys done NOTHING!) are just making up the story, probably, based on what O’Malley told them would or might happen in books 4, 5 and 6. This really bothers me as I would like a TRUE adaptation of Scott Pilgrim, not some half assed flick based on half a story that hasn’t even been finished. Could Wright and Bacall (why even hire this tool, my nomination would have been Deborah Kaplan and Harry Elfont, Co-Writers and Co-Directors of Josie and the Pussycats, for screenwriting duties, as that movie was GREAT) have crafted a conclusion that might satisfy Pilgrim’s (did I just coin a term for fans?)? Maybe, but not likely, and it won’t be true to O’Malley’s vision. There were three possibilities in adapting Scott Pilgrim and they are all MUCH better then the prospect of Half-Pilgrim which is what we seem to be getting. One; make a trilogy. Split books 1&2, 3&4, 5&6 into a three part series. This would allow the filmmakers time to make the movies and be able to adapt the last two books properly. However, I do understand that SP might not be the best piece of material to turn into a trilogy, so, on to suggestion…. Two; do a two part film. Had they done this, the film makers could have concentrated on adapting the first three books and, by the time the movie comes out, book six should have been finished which would have allowed them to make a sequel that focused on books 4, 5 and 6. This, to me, would have been the most satisfying prospect and, on a geek note, I would have preferred the movies to be called Scott Pilgrim’s Precious Little Life/Scott Pilgrim and the Infinite Sadness. Three; wait until book six was out and make a single movie. This idea isn’t as good as number Two but I do understand that they might only get one shot at doing a SP movie and, if the first film tanked, a second might not be made. So the idea of making one big movie seems like a good way to go for practical reasons. What we are getting is one movie but, as stated before, it will only be half the story while Wright and Bacall make up the rest and I don’t look forward to this movie as much as I once did knowing this. So, why are they rushing this rather then wait until book six came out? It’s because the comic, beloved as it is, is still a niche project without mainstream exposure. It’s also because Michael Cera is playing Scott Pilgrim and, I would bet, that this project only got the greenlight based on the fact that Juno was a huge hit. So Wright and Co. couldn’t wait and rushed this into production because after the failure of Year One it might have been a bit more difficult to get Pilgrim made once people realize that Cera isn’t bankable and got lucky to star in a 100 million plus hit. I also don’t think he’s right for the part either, however, I do admire the fact that Wright is trying to cast Canadian’s as Canadian characters. I just wish Cera wasn’t playing Pilgrim. There is one more problem with making a single movie out of this series besides the ones previously mentioned. Scott Pilgrim, to me, works on three different levels. You have the comedy (WHY IS EVERYONE OBSESSED WITH LESBIANS?!?), the heart (those quiet moments where the characters are contemplating/lamenting their station in life) and the fight scene’s between the seven evil exes. My worry is that, by making one movie, there will be too much focus on the fight sequences and not enough on the pathos. I’m sure that there will be plenty of jokes but it’s the little, identifiable real life moments, that really make the Scott Pilgrim comics for me. So I started with great excitement about this movie to now being fairly pessimistic that it’s going to be Scott Pilgrim-Lite. My hope was that we were going to get a movie that could, potentially, be a cross between Kung Fu Hustle and Clerks 2. Now I’m very worried that all that we will get is fight scene’s and video game references for two hours with a few jokes thrown in. I wanted Scott Pilgrim to be the Canadian equivalent of Spaced, if not better, but I don’t think that’s what we’ll see when we purchase our tickets and sit in the theatre in 2010. Sadface. Someone at the IMDB said that O Malley wanted it to stray from the books, to be it’s own thing, to which I replied…. Then why even bother adapting the comic in the first place? An adaptation doesn’t have to be a direct translation, ala Sin City, but it’s illogical to adapt a story that’s only half written then make up the rest on your own. Put it this way. Imagine you have a really great book. Someone takes that book and decides they want to adapt it. They then rip the book in half, adapt the first half then make up the other half themselves. Does. Not. Make. Sense. Let me use a comparison. The Godfather. Francis Ford Coppola took the book and cut it in half and made two films out of it. Both are masterpieces. Later Coppola made the Godfather Part 3 which was a clearly inferior film despite the involvement of Mario Puzo, who wrote the original book. You see, when Puzo wrote The Godafther, there was no Coppola, no movie, nothing. He just sat down and wrote a book. Had no idea of what it would become so it was all from his own imagination and perspective. Now, when he was working on The Godfather Part 3, suddenly he had Coppola sticking his nose in the scripting process, which is never as intensive or involved as writing a novel, which is why the movie pales in comparison to the first two movies. Ironically, Puzo wrote a book called The Last Done a few years later which is what Godfather 3 should have been. The point is that I don’t expect a slavish adaptation where every word and storyline is included. I expect Edgar Wright to make his own movie BUT, at the same time, what his adaptation needs to do is capture the spirit of O’Malley’s books. The problem is that, as I said, he’s only using half the story while making up the rest which means that it’s not a true adaptation that would have distilled the essence of the books into one great movie. I hope I’m wrong and the movie will be great but this is a message board and I’m just venting because I want this movie to be good because I think the SP books have what it takes to make a great flick.

I'll admit I wasn't all that excited when I found out that Michael Cera would be playing the lead, but that shot of the characters makes me think otherwise. He seems to have the gawkish awkwardness that I always loved about Scott Pilgrim. And the rest of the characters are instantly recognizable. The fact that Edgar Wright is the director is a HUGE bonus for me. I can't wait for this, I really hope it lives up to the hype.

But lesser than the Star Wars prequels? You need to go back and watch the prequels again. Ugh. Just horrid. Truly abhorrent. I like them less every year.

But these stills just aren't doing it for me. And I don't want to beat a dead horse (too much) but Cera is way over hyped right now and needs to go away. I'm sorry, but the impression I got of Scott Pilgrim in the book did not, at any point, scream to me, "Michael Cera should play him in a movie!" I don't get the casting choice at all.

they're sad that Avatar's getting more love than the prequels. It deserves it. Cameron created a fun world, something that was devoid in the latest Star Wars films (hell I would argue also missing from every Star Wars film save for A New Hope).

plays the same awkward little shit teen in EVERY FUCKING FILM. Makes Ben Stiller and Vince Vaughn look like great character actors (hey at least Vaughn played Psycho in that shitty remake and Ben Stiller had the decency to put on a moustache and change his voice). This film looks like a hipster's weak ass wet dream. Hell they even have their king Jason Schwartzman as the main villain. I'm surprised Zooey Deschanel isn't in this.

    by david cloverfield

in every movie. They just cast him in these parts, since the "Cera" character he plays is pretty unique in movies. It worked so great in Superbad, he gathered a lot of good will. I think he has a place in comedies, even if he milks this character to the bone. But I'm sure he'll try to do something else, when he gets the chance.

    by nicegoogly

They got nothing on Avatar. It is not the best movie and there is some near Ewoks style of nonsense, but it is kept to a minimum. And those morons that complain about the dialogue, it is still way better than the prequels. Also, it is established that Sully is a moron from the word go, so he is no conversationalist. The female N'avi is ESL. What do you expect?

TOPHER GRACE SHOULD BE PLAYING SCOTT PILGRIM!!!FACT!!!

    by tehcreepythinman

Yeah, I’d prefer a Canadian in the role, but I was watching That 70’s Show and Grace seems like the perfect fit. He’s got that geeky awkwardness that the role needs but Spider-man 3 shows that he can also project the strength of character that Pilgrim develops through the series. Michael Cera just looks like a fucking creep and I can’t stand watching him.

There have been extensive rewrites since the first draft, with all the books (even 6) considered AND with O'Malley's direct input. The (Movie they haven't seen/Michael Cera) haters can all go jump in a lake. This movie will be awesome.

Michael Cera = Schlub. He's not cute, and Scott most definitely is supposed to be cute. Scott is also supposed to irradiate a loser-style lovability, which I don't get off Cera. Plus, Cera has a weak chin.

    by stovetopstuffin'

Fuck Michael Cera, he's awesome. Indie bullshit for hipster assholes. You're all so unaware of how badass the comic books are. Edgar Wright is the best. I hate Shaun of the Dead. This looks like Power Rangers. Fuck yeah, a flaming sword!

Did I miss anything, fucktards? If you haven't read the books, don't base your entire assessment on a couple stills and Cera's prior films. If you are super stoked for the movie, don't hate on anyone who hasn't read the books or seen all of Wrights films. Point being, all of you are shitfuckers. Peace!

    by stovetopstuffin'

but my point is, we haven't seen the movie, so we don't know if he's right or not. Almost everyone thought Heath Ledger was all wrong for the Joker, and that Crispin Glover was the best choice. People thought that Hugh Jackman fella was all wrong for Wolverine and thought Russel Crowe was the best choice.

    by jaka

lol, but Cera hasn't proven to me that he can do anything BUT Cera and those guys did. I'm not arguing your point - I get it. And you're certainly right. Don't judge a book by it's cover and all that. I guess the point for some of us is that we just don't want to see Cera, period. Nothing to do with this film, really.

    by rocklobster800

looks amazingly like Patrick Fugit in Almost Famous, dontcha think? Im really looking forward to this flick actually as I love the books (although Raymona becomes more of a bitch as they go on, which hopefully wont translate over to the film). Winstead looks awesome, ten times hotter than usual which I didnt think was possible, and most of the cast look great (having Jason Schwartzman in anything is a plus, particularly if hes playing your main antagonist) but Cera is really the concern. I always imagined Scott Pilgrim as more of a dopier version of Marty Mc Fly than...you know...George Michael. and yeah, I have to agree Cera does play the same damn part in nearly everything, but, being an optimist I hope he'll pull the thumb out for this one....

I am half way through Vol.1 with Vol.2 next in line and I can say 2 things about these stills.1. Young Neil, Ramona, Knives, Stephen Stills all look spot on.2. I literally just started reading these knowing full well that Cera is the lead in the movie and I STILL can't picture him as Scott Pilgrim in the book.3. Topher would have been great but(seems to be the classic dream casting error)he is to old at this point. I don't hate Cera but I just don't see him in the role.
