LAW & ORDER To Get Record-Breaking 21st Season On NBC!!

Published at:  Jan 03, 2010 5:40:16 AM CST

I am – Hercules!!

Buried at the bottom of a Thursday Business Week story comes word that NBC plans to bring “Law & Order” back for a 21st season, which would break CBS’ old “Gunsmoke” record for longest-running primetime drama:

“I’m a ‘Law & Order’ junkie,” [NBC primetime entertainment president Angela] Bromstad said. “I wouldn’t want to be responsible for not having ‘Law & Order’ break the record.”

“The Simpsons,” which launched nine months earlier than “L&O,” is currently in its 21st season and holds the record for primetime sitcom. “60 Minutes,” launched in 1968, is in its 41st season and holds the record for primetime series.

Outside primetime, “Meet The Press” is the longest-running TV series, having debuted in 1947. “Guiding Light” began life on radio in 1937, hopped to TV in 1952 and finally left the air last fall.

“L&O’s” 20th season premiere pulled a miserable 1.2 in the 18-49 demo, but the series has improved steadily since. Its last new episode of 2009 hit a 1.7, matching its season high in the 8 p.m. Friday timeslot.

It saddens me that formulaic crap like L&O can stay on the air for two fucking decades while so many far, far superior shows fall by the wayside. I'd trade every episode of every L&O series for the second half of the first season of Firefly. Not to mention a fifth season of Farscape, a third season of Pushing Daisies, the last season of Deadwood. The list goes on and on...

    by sith_rising

my wife watches Bones and SVU and CSI, and I always make fun of the basic formula: someone gets shot in the face, and it's OBVIOUSLY suspect A, since he left a message on the guys phone saying "I'm gonna shoot you in the face". So they spend 20 minutes looking for him, but he has an alibi because he was doing time or something. So they talk to Person B, an uninterested party, who leads them to suspect C, who they spend the next 20 minutes putting through the ringer with exhaustive lab tests involving DNA and bullets and fibers and mud, etc. Then, in the last 7 minutes, SURPRISE! It was Person B all along, who elaborately framed Suspect C and, of course, confesses. Fuck this show.

1st and 2nd season L&O were some of the best crime fiction ever on television - right up there with The Wire. Part of the reason - those guys heated each other's guts. Too bad they recast and screwed with the formula.

    by jbs9200

Another reason the first few seasons of L&O were good was because the city itself was gritty and edgy.
In later seasons the city is too glossy and clean. There is no edge it just feels like a managed set.

NBC had the right formula a few years ago.

    by darkhawkprime

That was to place L&O on Sunday nights AFTER football season. That way you get the old folks to watch and hopefully no repeats. Plus announce this is the last season and have all the still living old characters come back for an episode or two. Hell if they wanted to do something revolutionary, it's been established thru John Munch that L&O exists in the Homicide Universe, and The Wire shares the same Universe as Homicide, why not bring in Dominic West as Det. What's the point of keeping a show on the air...

    by nasty in the pasty

...if you're just going to replace 90% of the original cast by the time the show is limping past it's tenth season? Just create a NEW fucking lawyer/cop/doctor show! It's like, imagine Lost running through 2024, but every single actor left eight seasons ago, and the only original character from the series still left is a now twenty-something Baby Aaron or some such bullshit. They tried this shit with The X-Files in it's ninth season, and the Doggett & Reyes team was rightfully rejected by series fans, who didn't want to see a poor subsitution for Mulder & Scully (reduced to reciting some variation on "Well, if MULDER were here, he'd say..." in every fucking episode). Smallville has lost about 80% of it's season one cast by now. Honestly, aside from Tom Welling and Alison Mack, who's left from the show's first season? NO ONE!!! Even though Smallville is still entertaining, it should have been retitled "Metropolis" three seasons ago (when does Clark even return to Smallville anymore, except to feed his dog?). Aside from soap operas, there is NO REASON to keep a show on the air if you're replacing virtually everyone in the fucking cast. Why are they still pushing Scrubs at us, when Zach Braff is the only original cast member left? Just create ANOTHER wacky medical show. Jesus...

don't like that the L&O series has had many cast changes over the run of the show. I actually like the concept and it is representative of everyday life. I hate when you get a situation where nobody gets promoted (Commander Riker I am looking at you).

    The changing cast

    by sonny_williams

does make sense. Cops transfer to other duty, get promoted, die, retire; ADAs either move up or move out. SVU has actually lost some of its real-worldness by still having the same leads after 9 years. In the early seasons they frequently talked about the high burnout rate for SVU detectives, yet Bentsen and Stabler remain. I mean, I love the characters but in the real world they'd be long gone.

True, but wasn't he offered his own ship once or twice but turned it down because being First Officer on the Enterprise was far more prestigious than Captain on some minor science vessel? Besides, if there's one character on TV that ever deserved a promotion but never got it was Ensign Kim. gotten another lead roll and anthony Anderson is just as strong in straight drama as he is in comedy. I also like Linus Roache. The only problem is the decidedly Leftward political slant it has taken lately. I'm used to this out of Hollywood and it's usually subtle enough that I can look past it, but these last two years have been ridiculous. However, the episodes where McCoy isn't going after the Bush Administration are pretty good. And the ADA, oh my God, she is insanely hot, yet somehow not too hot to be a believable lawyer...

    by stabby

It's nine o'clock in the Pedalback

    the usual suspects log in

    Subtitles_Off is posting the Subbaryâ

Typin' love at Teddy and SixDemon

He says, Stabby can you write me a parody

I'm not really sure how it should go

But it should be professional like ‘moose’s confessional

And it most definitely shouldn’t blow

Da da da de de da

da da de de da da da

Post us a song, here in the Pedalback

    Post us a song today

Well, we're all in the mood for a parody

And we need something not gay

Now Continetalop is a friend of ours

He educates us on classic film for free

And Cheeses is quick with a joke especially when he smokes

And at 3 in the mornin’ there's no place that he'd rather be

He says ’moose, I don’t believe in the moon landing

As the smile ran away from moose’s face

Well, I'm sure that it’s all a conspiracy

And I can prove it at this place:

    (infowars.com)

Da da da de de da

da da de de da da da

Now, Flicka is a stay at home dad illustrator

Who gets drunk on ginger ale and wine

And he's talking with Colonel who's not really a Colonel

But likes to play one online

And Scary Waitress is typing about politics

    As Cheeses slowly gets stoned

Yes, they're sharing a Talkback called loneliness

But it's better than posting alone

Post us a song, here in the Pedalback

    Post us a song today

Well, we're all in the mood for a parody

And we need something not gay

It's a pretty good crowd for a Friday,

    And Subtitles_Off sends us a “Woo-Hoo!”

'Cause he knows that the Pedalback is the Number 1 Talkback

And it will be at least until [deleted] 2.

And the Pedalback looks like a carnival

And Japanese_Beef_Salad_Tosser tries to steal our a mojo

And Cobra types in subject box instead of the text box

And says "Billy Joel doesn’t exist in this dojo!”

Da da da de de da

da da de de da da da

Post us a song, here in the Pedalback

    Post us a song today
