ACK!!! 2010 Brings An Unexpected Gift... My Jaw Dropped, bounced off my belly and made a clapping sound! Bless You Japan!

Hey folks, Harry here recovering from a New Year's Bash I threw, where the last guest left at 5:53am. So I peel myself out of bed, walk the dog, brush the teeth, stretch to get the aches out - and then... the computer. Ordinarily, I get thousands of emails a day. But, for some awesome reason, New Years gets here... and I start to get human amounts of email. And in those few emails was one stating "At Long Last... A STARBLAZERS MOVIE!!!!" I clicked so fast.... then when I saw that TheDew had a YouTube link to:

I literally screamed like a little girl when I saw Captain Avatar sitting there - and then Derek Wildstar, then the Yamato blasting shit in space and HOLY FUCK! WANT TO SEE THIS MOVIE SO FUCKING BAD! BATTLESHIP YAMATO was why I ran home from Elementary School for Grades 3-6, that and Gatchaman - and 2010 will bring both to our screens hopefully!

    What bugs me about this

    by Red43jes

While I don't think that Starblazerss aged well for me at all, I will want to see this movie. What bugs me is that I'll end up having to see a bootleg of the damn thing. Worse, I will probably have to sit through subtitles. I don't mind voice overs at all. In fact, I was fine with it when they did it to Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. Speaking of which, WHY can't we find a way to get more movies imported to theaters??? If that would happen, I could deal with subtitles...

Love Yamato & StarBlazer, but this movie will suck shite!

    by Meta

If I was 12 right now, I would be excited. I grew up on Star Blazers. Ran home every day from school to watch it. Learned everything I could about anime because of it. Love all of Leiji Matsumoto's work. But this film is going to be one giant suckfest. Kimtaku can't act out of a paper bag. With the exception of great filmmakers like Kurosawa and Ozu, Japanese directors have no sense of telling a story. Have you seen most of the SF tripe they produce? Yes, the story is already written, but that doesn't mean they'll tell it well. Looks like the FX may be on par with BSG, but I haven't seen more than a couple of images, so other things could really look like crap. Speaking of BSG, anybody notice that Cosmotiger outfit the woman is wearing (I'm guessing she's going to be Yuki Mori aka Nova) is a straight rip-off of the BSG viper outfits. I also guarantee that some Johnny's (Johnny Kitagawa) managed property will be doing the lame ass theme song for the film(it's the only way they could have gotten Kimura in this film, since that old queen manages him). And by the way; they are replacing Sado-sensei (Dr. Sane) with a woman! Bad idea. This isn't a Starbuck situation, Sado-sensi is a dwarf-pototo-headed-drunken-crumudgeon of the ship. There was a point to him being a guy (and a lush). It's like saying they should have a woman play the Penguin in the next Batman film. Some of you will have a jizz fest over the trailer, but my expectations are pretty low for this film. Wonder if they'll have the Gamilons be played by occidentals? After all this was Matsumoto's & Nishizaki's allegory of a legendary Japanese WWII battleship going to war against blond haired, blue eyed (and skinned) enemies - which were supposed to be Americans. You know, the ones who bombed their country with radioactive bombs! Just like the Gamilons.

  • The man is almost 40. Susumu Kodai was supposed to be 18 in the first story. Should have gotten somebody with acting ability for the role, not pop-singer popularity.

Looks like it`s a year away...

    by Kintaro1

The website for it lists it as hitting on 12.1.2010.....but that countdown clock is less than 15 hours til...something.... The guy starring in it is Kimura Takuya, one of the members of SMAP....not a bad actor, despite what some here say. Could have been far far worse, all things considered. I do agree that we see him every day all over the place over here.... The lines said in the clip are : `Is that...?` `That`s right. Yamamto.` And like many others here, back in the US as a boy I would run home to catch this and Speed Racer in the afternoons, and catch this and Marine Boy in the AM before school. Oddly enough, when I just showed this to the wife (She`s Nihonjin), she casually replied `Oh yeah, I knew this awhile ago`...I was like `WTF Didn`t you tell me?!?` This made my year!! Thanks Harry!!

    by FlickaPoo

...not that anyone cares at this point. I don’t normally do this sort of thing, but I was a vocal AVATAR skeptic…I mostly just voiced my concerns about what I was seeing and hearing in the trailers and clips, but I did fire off the occasional flippant or derogatory remark if it seemed funny or cool enough. <P> I was wrong. <P> My only major beef is with the staggeringly incompetent and hopefully soon unemployed person who decided to put any and all questionable material in the trailers and promotional clips. The Charging The Bear scene was hopelessly cliché and has been beaten to death…but at two minutes in a nearly three hour move the irritation it caused was like a tablespoon of vinegar in an ocean of champagne…hardly worth mentioning. Dialogue that sounded corny and trite in the trailer made perfect sense in context. That villain absolutely would say things like “we’re not in Kansas anymore” just as much as he would say things like “hold your position” or “target at six o’clock”…that’s part of what made him villainous…that’s who that guy was, having him spout creatively evil Shakespearian metaphors would have been out of character. <P> A lot has been made of the familiar and/or stolen plot. Stealing is a dangerous game…it’s a big gamble and you better know what you’re doing. And Cameron did steal. Cameron stole not just from DANCES WITH WOLVES and FERN GULLY and the rest…he stole from the best of everything. He stole from Edgar Rice Burroughs, Jules Verne, Robert E. Howard, H. G. Wells and all the old pulp writers…he stole from BRAVEHEART and old classic war movies, he stole from LAST OF THE MOHICANS…I’m sure he stole from countless sources I’m not familiar with. Maybe I’m getting carried away here, but that kind of stealing doesn’t just get a pass…that kind of stealing is what art is made of. AVATAR rapes pillages and plunders all of storydom and mixes up a thousand recognizable influences into something I haven’t quite seen before. <P> I’ve read tens of thousands of words about AVATAR at this point, and even the harshest critics acknowledge that the visuals are impressive. I was completely unprepared for what I saw on Pandora. It took me a while to settle in, but by the time night fell and the bioluminescence that looked so cheesy on TV kicked in I was frankly a bit emotional at the majesty of what I was seeing. I’ve only had feelings like that on top of real mountains, in real forests, or in cathedrals in Europe…spine tingling awe and wonder. <P> A few effects were a little less amazing than others (the horses were the weakest animation) but hardly worth mentioning in light of the overall experience. Our hero’s disability and his wonder and glee at his new body was far more effective and moving than I imagined it would be and fit perfectly with my humbled exhilaration in Pandora’s jungle. Of all the familiar and re-mixed elements in AVATAR something I have never seen is a twelve foot alien that I now love cradling the broken and crippled body of her mate…seeing him as for the puny human he is…and loving all of him for real for the first time. <P> Strangely, as much as I loved it, I don’t feel an urge to see AVATAR again anytime soon unless it’s to share the experience with someone who hasn’t been yet. I certainly won’t see it in 2D. I have argued that a good movie shouldn’t rely on effects...that it should be just as good in 2D as in 3. Maybe, but I was on Pandora…I was there for real…and I don’t want to see a flat imitation on my TV at home. <P> Anyone reading this will be able to tell that I just got back and am still riding the high. I would probably be more measured in my praise tomorrow, and I will probably regret this post tomorrow. and I promise I will go back to poo flicking as soon as possible…but I'm a humbled skeptic. Avatar was one of the high points of my theatergoing life.

What was that Japanese show that had that bad guy whose head was seperate from his body, and another bad guy who was half-man, half-woman (seriously...split right down the middle just like Two-Face)? I can't remember the title of that show for the life of me. Didn't it have bad guys with horns that sprouted out of their heads...?<BR><BR>As for Star Blazers, I'd actually love to see a big budget *American* film series developed from the propery. A trilogy of films would cover the "Iscandar" storyline nicely. One film getting underway, one film about the journey there, and the third about the trip home. Star Blazers was THE show for any Star Wars-obsessed kid in the early 80's, and while watching it again a few years back revealed it to be cheesier than I remembered, the fact that it had a recurring, soap opera-esque storyline was revelatory for a kid who grew up on shite like Inspector Gadget, which was so rigorous in it's storytelling formula from episode to episode that, even at age eight or whatever, I could tell EXACTLY what would happen, and when, in each episode, sight-unseen. Take what worked about the series (the plot skeleton, the characters), and update it with Starship Troopers-quality visual effects. It would even be perfect for a lucrative, PG-13 franchise. Make it happen!

    "The landslide buried the Gamelon...!"

    by Nasty In The Pasty

Even as a kid, it amused me how they edited out acts of violence in the U.S. cut of the series, like Derek Wildstar shoots a Gamelon in the chest in the Japanese version (and it's not even bloody...he just grabs his chest and collapses like in an old John Wayne Western), but in the American version, they just cut to stock footage of a landslide from earlier in the episode and track Derek's line quoted above over it. Pretty funny.<BR><BR>Someone seriously needs to release a boxed set of the first season of the show, with seamless branching containing both the unaltered Japanese versions and the American-dubbed ones.

  • Jan. 1, 2010, 9:45 p.m. CST

Well, I guess I get to the the ungeeked here

    by Jaka

I mean, it looks incredible. I LOVE the way it looks. But as I've expressed many times before, Asian cinema just isn't my cup of coffee (I hate tea). Some people, a lot of people - admittedly, really dig it. Harry is clearly one of those people. Unfortunately (for me) I won't see this until somebody has a DVD I can borough or it plays on cable.

  • Read the script a long time back, it was not very well developed. Hollywood wouldn't know how to do it right either They were going to use the Arizona instead of the Yamato as the Argo (get it "Ar" they can use the same 2 letters? How clever) Crew of 100's or more was scaled down to a crew of about 7. Aliens were muddled down in all sorts of BS. The first 2 animated Yamato movies were perfect for its time. Great stories of human triumph over tragedy and self-sacrifice. Don't get the same feeling from this project. That being said there isn't much to judge this on, other than shitty casting and a few FX shots. I would like to see something good, I just don't really expect it. Japan has a worse track record of anime-to-live-action adaptations than the US does. Just check out any of the ones that Japan produced to see what I mean.

General Lysys (General Domel) commiting suicide by blowing himself up under the Argo (they played his footage backwards to make him look like he was moving away from the ship). Desslok shooting Krypt at point blank range after he tells his leader to give up because the war was unwinnable. And of course in 2nd season when Sgt. Knox (Col. Saito), Orion (Tokugawa), and Yammamoto (forgot his name in US - the leader of the CosmoTigers) all died in battle. Of course more of them died in the the movie version, but we never got to see that.

    Meta - the Arizona script

    by GeneralKael

I seem to remember something about this as well and I thought "Please no". Although I can see the emotional equivalent of the Arizona to the Yamato, the idea that it HAS to be an American ship didn't make sense to me. Besides, on the show it seemed like it was all of Earth fighting together - that should be the focus - what's wrong with using a Japanese battleship?

    Captain Harlock

    by GeneralKael

I think you guys have your shows crossed. Harlock(sometimes known as Herlock) was made by the same guy who did Yamato(I think there is actually a quick scene where you can see his ship going by but they don't explain it - I'm not sure if that was in a hyperdrive sequence or not - those can get pretty trippy on Star Blazers). However, these were definitely two different shows - the freaky plant chicks were from Harlock. The look is similar as it is the same people making it, both have spaceships that resemble ocean going ships, but they are definitely two different shows.

    Captain Harlock

    by Meta

Yamato came first. Leiji Matsumoto originally included Captain Harlock in the Yamato manga (it was Wildstar's brother) but wanted to retain the rights to the character completely to himself and not share it with Nishizaki. So Harlock never appeared in Yamato and went on to his own series with a new origin which takes about 500 years after Yamato.

  • Jan. 1, 2010, 10:16 p.m. CST

    by Meta

I mean to say that Harlock never appeared in the Yamato anime, so Matsumoto could keep 100% of the rights to the character. Space Cruiser Yamato has a history of major legal wrangling between Leiji Matsumoto (Manga Creator) & Yoshinobu Nishizaki (Yamato's Anime Producer and according to him, the one who supposedly came up with the idea of Space Cruiser Yamato).

  • Jan. 1, 2010, 10:17 p.m. CST

    Thanks for the details Meta

    by GeneralKael

I remember reading that Yamato basically defined the standard look of Anime for years to come - which is why so many shows that followed it look similar. Meta - do you have any idea why Harlock is sometimes named Herlock - is it just a translation issue or something? I was quite surprised to see DVDs at a store with Captain Herlock on it. Also, I'm almost sure I remember seeing Harlock's ship go by and him saluting the Argo in an episode of Star Blazers, but maybe I'm thinking of Galaxy Express...

One time I was visiting a friend in Japan. I couldn't speak Japanese at all other than what my friend and his friends taught me. I went to a collectible store with stuff everywhere, and I had no idea how the heck to ask the clerk anything. So I just said the only thing I could think of - "Yamato?" and the clerk would go "ah, Yamato, Yamato.." and he would look around and bring out all the Yamato stuff. Geek - the universal language.

    Harlock & The Matsumoto-verse

    by Meta

It's written Herlock because of one of those Japanese "I don't know how to spell things in English", many many years ago that sort of became cannon in the way the Japanese spelled his name (although it is pronounced Harlock and the Japanese katakana also says Harlock). Nobody bothered to correct it. Like Arucard and Alucard in "Hellsing". Yamato and Harlock only appeared together in the original Manga. (although there seems to be a Yamato cameo in the original Harlock anime) But in the Matsumoto one-shot anime DNASight999 you can see both the Yamato and Arcadia flying side by side - in something that makes no sense whatsoever. However, Harlock and Galaxy Express 999 do take place in the same timeline and have crossovers. But originally many of Leiji Matsumoto's things were supposed to take place in the same universe, but at different times. from earliest in the timeline to latest Queen of 1000 years ->Space Cruiser Yamato->My Youth in Arcadia (Captian Harlock origin)->Galaxy Epress 999->Endless Road SSX -> Space Pirate Captain Harlock (the original anime)

...CBC french in Canada had all kinds of Anime on it when I was a kid, even though the English station did not - I mostly understood what was going on but sometimes I was a bit confused as I don't speak french very well - in French he is called Albator - I still like the French theme song more than the English one for some reason. I seem to remember the French version being really creepy at times - I wonder if they left more stuff in...

I was already an American kid watching Italian TV, so what was the difference? <P>The Italians put a lot of work into the songs and you could buy compilation tapes...almost all the intros are available on YouTube. I'm just impressed with that leather jacket uniform. Silly. <p> But the jacket seems to have kept the motif yet made it look like a uniform. Kudos.

I'm a long time fan of Yamato (I used to watch Starblazers whenever I could catch it during the summer staying with relatives). I've kept the movies (the first one retells the first series in 135 minutes) in my queue for a while. If you have an account, just do a search for Yamato and you can watch most of the movies (subtitled even!!!)whenever you want! Japan's track record with live action adaptations has been pretty hit and miss, but I have high hopes for this one!

  • Jan. 2, 2010, 4:11 a.m. CST

I goofed up on the Matsumoto timeline slightly

    by Meta

Endless Road SSX comes before Galaxy Express 999. Because Tochiro's (Harlock's engineer) demise takes place in GE 999, but the cause of it happens in SSX. Not that anybody cares. But back to Yamato...As a huge Star Blazers and Matsumoto fanboy I love the idea of this. I truly do. I have been waiting since I was a kid for this. I'm just fearful that it will suck badly. And knowing how every other anime-to-live action film/tv show adaptation has sucked badly in Japan and the US (although I think Harry did like Speed Racer), I have very low expectations for this project that it will be able pull it off with a decent amount of enjoyment. FX wise, Japan is not where the rest of the movie-making industry is yet. I'm sure there will be some cool FX shots, but I think it will look closer to TV quality than film quality. Director wise, I have yet to find someone in recent years that has impressed me with their directing ability, especially for SciFi (although I blame that more on the Japanese film making system that forces live action directors to make quickie fluff-pieces with no creative depth, or low-budget cookie-cutter J-horror to cash in on the sudden popularity of Japanese horror). Could they prove me wrong? I hope to god so, but I'm not holding my breath.

Don't be happy yet. Japan's been crap for 5+ years now.

    by thethedew

The makers of the STAR BLAZERS / US version were wise to not re-score it. While the lyrics for the STAR BLAZERS opening were a bit silly, the theme music cut right through. Plenty of CD's are available for those who want to go hunting, but wcmewcme's post above links to a lyric-free version of the theme, set to modern computer graphics made for a kind of immersive Yamato arcade game. If the movie's FX approach the fun of these shots, we're in for a fun ride.<p> They wouldn't NOT use the original music, would they? I dug that little teaser in a major way. I can already see the day when I get my hands on this DVD, get stoned to my eyeballs, and become a seven-year-old again.

Did I seriously just see a CGI upgrade of the original series, t

    by JasonPratt

I was checking some of the related links under the main video being screened in the post, and I swear I saw scenes from the first two series being upgraded to CGI much like classic Trek!! If the live-action film is worthless, TO HELL WITH IT!!! Just go with the animation upgrade!!

Okay, on further checking... a CGI sequel with callbacks

    by JasonPratt

I think what they've done is make a CGI sequel to the original series, but there will be flashbacks involving key scenes (with Captain Avatar; the Yamato rising out of the ice seas of Pluto; the Comet Empire and its fleet approaching earth, etc.)

You're looking at video from various different projects, JasonPr

    by thethedew

There are trailers for the most recent Yamato animated film, Yamato:Rebirth (the 6th of the series, released in December in Japan), fully CGI animations made for an arcade game (probably what you're looking at), and maybe bits from a couple direct-to-video projects that have been made over the years.

    Live action trailer

    by GeneralKael

Apparently the youtube live action video is a tv commercial that is playing in Japan right now - very early trailer. It is also apparently the first time it is being referred to as Space Battleship Yamato in Japanese commercials, which some on Japanese cinema websites are saying is an indication that this movie is being directed to western audiences as well. It will be interesting to see how things turn out.
