Domestic One-Sheet for #5 Best Film of 2009, THE SQUARE is here!
Hey folks, Harry here with a cool AICN exclusive from the new company APPARITION which will be distributing my number 5 movie of 2009 at a yet to be noted date in 2010. This film is, of course, THE SQUARE. Just a tremendous Film Noir! One of my all time favorite film genres, and I believe most every hardcore film geek's short list of favorite genres. The first time I saw this movie, I fell instantly in love with it. Then, 3 months later, I had another screening at CineVegas. That time, the film reduced me to tears. A film that really gets even better on multiple viewings. So I can't wait to not only see the film, but hear which of you out there connect with the film like I did. Anyway, here's the teaser poster:

Other than that, looking forward to giving this movie a gander.
-
..the word on this film in it's country of origin has been good, but nothing like the frothing Harry has been providing..the fact they're using him in the one-sheet is enough to make me wonder how good it really could be...
-
... enter the Square. Square Master.
-
No one cares you got to see it in 2009. Put it on your 2010 list.
-
I wouldn't put it in my top 10 of 2009... but it was a solid little thriller.
-
FLOCKA!!!
-
... which, IMO, is Samson & Delilah. Now that is a heartbreakingly honest film. That said, I just checked... and The Square actually came out in 2008, so it doesn't need to compete.
-
agreed.

a square.
-
well over here in australia anyway
it hit dvd in 2009... still a good film though... nice taste harry. Well worth borrowing on dvd -
neither do anyone else i know born in the seventies.
-
So it's not 2009. And not 2010. 2011, maybe. 2012, no. No way. 2013 would be cool.
-
that would use a quote from Harry on its one-sheet
-
The first time I saw it I was expecting pretty good things from the word I got from this site and some other people I read/talk to. Maybe expecting it was the reason, but I just found myself not surprised by anything The Square. Told well, filmed well etc but it just didn't get me revving really. I felt like I knew how it would end just from the kind of movie it was... that's just me though
-
Haven't seen Spongebob in years.
-
"My favorite genre," and " I fell in love with it," does not tell me what it is about.
-
...fact.
-
forming/building soon!

This is all whack until they do this in Smell-O-Vision.
by scarywaitress
3-D just ain't enough for me anymore.
-
...each other...in my humble opinion.
-
I guess it's sort of like the chimp thing. If a chimp can wear a hat and walk on it's hind legs everyone is so amused, and yet when a person does it, no one even notices. That's the way it is with Australian movies. The fact that an Aussie can make a movie at all so overwhelms the critics that they don't notice that it is utter crap. I have never seen an Aussie movie that was not utter crap. Let the hatred storm down on me now, but in your hearts, you know I'm right.
-
Isn't this the same company releasing Malick's TREE OF LIFE?
-
...slant on the genre.
-
Or just black and white like the Werewolf poster?
-
The ubiquitous AICN quote from Harry.
-
So film noir!
-
...two dimensional...so disappointing overall.

It's hip to be Square, dude! (snaps fingers and points at ya)
by mrmysteryguest
-
it's not something I would put in a top ten. Australia regularly produces good little noirish films like this.
-
... on the poster that is NOT a good sign.
-
...is such an ill defined term. We all have a picture of what "classic" film noir is, but everyone seems to be in disagreement about what current or neo-noir really is.

Picnic at Hanging Rock, Gallipoli, Mad Max 1 & 2 & 3, Little Fish, Two Hands, Newsfront, Rabbit Proof Fence, My Brilliant Career, Breaker Morant, Romper Stomper, Idiot Box, The LightHorsemen, Babe 1 & 2, Happy Feet, Blood Oath, Candy, The Proposition, The Cars That Ate Paris, Dead Calm, Puberty Blues( Get fucked ya Mole!), Lantana, Wolf Creek, The Sum of Us, Patrick, Malcolm and Death in Brunswick....Just off the top of my head, there are many that I have forgot or never seen.
-
You forgot Chopper.
And, to be fair, at least half the films on your list are mediocre at best. Of course, you would have only needed to write the words "Mad Max 2" (or Road Warrior) to prove johnnyangel wrong.
The fact remains, however, that the Australian film industry generally sucks giant balls. Problem is the industry is populated mainly by pretentious wannabe auteurs who prefer navel gazing to telling stories that are actually entertaining. Every few years or so something rolls down the pike that is worth watching, though. I just wish our industry would take more notice of the Korean Film Industry - those guys have really got it going on. -

Happyfat73...I'll agree many aussie films are terrible
by nomoredirtyjokespleaseweareyanks
I just took umbrage with his claim that all are utter crap. As for mediocrity, apart from The Lighthorsemenm, The Sum of Us and Idiot Box the others are pretty well regarded as classics of either film or of their particular genre. I think, however you would find that most countries film output = 70% shite 25% excellent and 5% classic. Aussies are usually too interested in making the film seem more Australian, as if it makes them more palatable. The ones that succeed are usually universal in theme. You're correct about Chopper, how'd I miss that one?
-
i really do question you putting this at #5. be objective, stop making friends
-
Bogan comedies or heavy handed, god awfully depressing human dramas. I know this isn't always the case, there are some exceptions to the rule... But, I find most films fit into those two categories.

I just noticed it on IMBDB, maybe it's old news or not news to some, but I thought it was interesting. It's a Lucasfilm product and GL co-wrote the script. WWII flick.

Harry lists a movie on his top 10, then posts an "exclusive" with HIS QUOTE on the poster...lol..jesus man, you're not even trying anymore are you.

Lucas has been working on that since the 90s at least. It will never get made, because Lucas is too busy making shit Clone Wars cartoons.
-
That was announced as his next film after Revenge of the Sith, and he's not even directing it anymore. So it might be good. LawrenceOfArcadia's statement about Aus film making bogan comedy and dark dramas is bang on, and that's because that's all the FFC will fund. Fucking Aus film industry.

Damn good films all, and undoubtably a hell of a lot of others that I have missed. Yes, Australia also makes a lot of shit, but name me a film producing country that doesn't and I'll call you a liar. There is plenty of quality out there, if you just open your eyes and go looking for it. -
...right?
-
You've got some good films in that list... but some utter shit also.
Somersault? Really? The year that film cleaned up at the AFIs was the nadir of Australian film and indicative that if no decent films come out they should give no awards either. -
As far as I know, principal photography has been completed. Just the effects and some pick-ups is all that's left apparently.

Really what a flat out dumb fuckin cunt thing to say. Just wave a flag that says 'fuckwit'..and save yourself the energy of typing such retarded generalizations.

I had heard some good stuff but didn't really know anything about it going in and fuck if it didn't entertain the shit out of me. I became obsessed with the song Peggy Gordon after. It probably didn't hurt that I was drinking straight Jameson while I watched it. Whatever works, ya know?
-
Re: Red Tails. I must have noticed it a long time ago and completely forgotten about it. I guess what struck me was that it was in post now.
Re: Square poster with Harry's own quote on it. I can see people barking at him for being arrogant, but then again, what the fuck, if a King can't wear a crown in his own castle, where the hell can he wear it? -
It was supposed to be produced in the early 90s.

"distributing my number 5 movie of 2009 at a yet to be noted dat
by themarinebiologist
This sentence describes perfectly why I have always and will always think you are full of shit, Harry.
-
Curse you, subject form.
-
...is that Harry couldn't come up with another great film noir between now & Body Heat. Nothing against naked Kathleen Turner, but I'm sure there have been a few in there somewhere... (Memento maybe? Brick? Oscar-fav LA Confidential? Mulholland Drive? Pick your poison).
-
Roger that PBR Streetgang
-
Such an unrealistic and silly contrivance. BRICK was a perfect example of a perfectly stupid film in this genre (turned if off at around the half-way point). SIN CITY (aka SHIT CITY or SIN SHITTY) was another miserable excuse. Coule have been much better without the stupid noir aspect...which makes for ludicrous and cliche dialogue and generally silly narration and interaction between characters.
-
you were technically film noir. Ever watch a film made before 1980? Try it. You might like it.
-
Nicolas Ray, "On Dangerous Ground"
-
And if anybody disagrees with a choice being noir, make a case for it: what about it does and does not make it so. Why I thought it, "KC Confidental" reminded me of how "Reservoir Dogs" should have a title saying "inspired by..." Seriously. But "Reservoir Dogs" is a great example of a modern film noir (funny for a film filled the most bright red blood since the days of Peckinpah). It works well as an update on the genre as it debates the popular characteristics of "manliness," clearly influenced by Tarantino's most beloved pictures but also just as informed by his intelligence and feminine sensitivity to character and character motivation. Both are great small pictures and the sheer genious of the story in "KC Confidental" still humbles me.
-
"Kansas City Confidental" is not even noir. I disagree, though. The line between criminality and morality is ever present, and damn if it isn't a menacing picture at times - even, and maybe especially because, its daytime locations. Instead of dripping with shadows, it reeks of desperation. And hidden identity, man, that's a film noir theme if there ever was one.
-
Know that I was supposed to say "Out of the Past" but damn if this isn't one tricky picture. Almost the entire picture is built around a red herring and then, bam, that walk in the desert with the killer. That's what I'm talking about. A very lonely picture. That's noir.
Great early forerunner to another modern noir picture classic, Fincher's "Seven" where the serial killing is really just a way to express the divide between men. Where Despair is as present a shrouded character as is Death. -
"They Live by Night" and "In a Lonely Picture" (a masterpiece, noir or not - and one of the best reasons to have a knowledge of film noir in that it shows how far genre can be stretched past its comfortable perimeters: one of the great "internal" pictures, like a card game where the stakes are hearts and minds). Know that there is a guy on here with a real thing for Lang but its Ray for me. Great pictures here.
-
you said that "Sin City" and "Brick" were highly contrived. I am in agreeance with you. But the brazen macho dialouge in those two films is nothing really like that in earlier genre films; "Brick" is much more inspired by the Coens' amazing "Miller's Crossing" in its creation of an insider dialouge. (One thing that "Brick" does have in common with noir, and what makes it a strong picture, is that the hero is not actually all that strong or intelligence, but more of a survivor, the one left alive to put together all the hideous little fragment formed from the broken lives of all the players back together to form the whole sad and sorry sordid big picture.) Actually, the plot development in "Brick" is pretty powerful stuff, and a good emulation of Hammet's twisty plots which is where the Machivellian power brokering came from that is at the moral backbone of "Miller's Crossing." His books inspired a great many detective films, including Huston's "Maltese Falcon." The detective film and the noir picture are not synonymous, but they do overlap at times.
-
I'm sorry if I was harsh. Your title statement was really strident, and not well informed (not for such a strong statement, and on a movie site!). Noir is a much beloved genre, and for good reason. Modern filmmaking would be very different if noir had not have had the influence that it did. And I think you are missing out. While you have to be careful with the titles you pick, you might find some that you really love. And I'm serious about that. Noir pictures are some of the most socially conscious in the pantheon of filmmaking, and have helped create our current zeitgeist. In a way, they even prefigured the power abuses the Vietnam War in the name of ideals. Psychologically deep films, great storytelling, and some of the most beautiful and striking black-and-white images in film history. (Kubrick's first studio picture, "Killer's Kiss," was noir.)
-
BFD. Not worth watching. Very dry, and 30 minutes too long. The ONLY thing good about it is the last 3 minutes when the girl gets her brains splattered all over the wall. Just fast-forward to that. You are welcome.
