How about a free screening of DAYBREAKERS in Chicago to start 2010 off right? Capone has the details!!!

Published at:  Dec 28, 2009 10:46:24 AM CST

Hey everyone. Capone in Chicago here. The new year is almost upon us, and what better way to celebrate than a free screening of a really cool movie here in the Windy City. January historically has been reserved for two types of films: wider releases of things that opened in select markets in late December, and total crap. On January 8 alone, much of the country will see the opening of YOUTH IN REVOLT, THE IMAGINARIUM OF DR. PARNASSUS, THE LOSS OF A TEARDROP DIAMOND, and a little sci-fi/horror piece called DAYBREAKERS, all of which are solid works. Of course, we also get LEAP YEAR, but, still, that’s a pretty good ratio.

When I was at Fantastic Fest in September, there was one mainstream film I saw there that genuinely surprised me. I believe it may have even been the Closing Night offering at the festival. And that film was DAYBREAKERS, a project I'd been reading about for quite some time, and kind of wondered where it had disappeared to. It comes courtesy of The Spierig Brothers (Michael and Peter), whose first film, UNDEAD, was a funny and grotesque exercise in low-budget filmmaking that seemed to be the heir apparent to Peter Jackson's BRAIN DEAD (a.k.a. DEAD ALIVE). UNDEAD played well at BNAT many years back, but DAYBREAKERS is an entirely different animal.

I know many of you have probably had your fill of vampire films, but I'm going to insist that you take a look at what DAYBREAKERS has to offer--a fully realized alternate reality in which vampires have taken over the earth, and the few remaining humans are being farmed for blood. The military has been repurposed to do nothing but seek out pockets of hidden and resistant humans, and the entire planet only exists when the sun goes down. Despite the fact that all of the Goth and romance has been stripped out of this vampire tale, DAYBREAKERS is still very much a monster movie (just wait until you see what happens when the vampires start feeding on each other). The film stars Ethan Hawke as a blood expert who first realizes that the world's blood supply is literally days away from running out and reports his finding to boss Sam Neill. And let's not forget Willem Dafoe as the leader of the human resistance who may hold the key to solving the blood-supply problem. The film is a real vision, and I'm not wasting any time showing it to Chicago-area AICN readers.

I've got about 200 seats to fill for the exclusive AICN screening of DAYBREAKERS on Monday, January 4, 2010, at 7:00pm at the theater in downtown Chicago (the exact location will only be given to contest winners).

Here's how to secure a pass good for you and one guest: Send me an email at therealcapone@aintitcoolmail.com with the subject line "NEW YEAR’S DAYBREAKERS" In the body of the email, I need your Name, whether or not you're bringing a Guest (guests' names are not required), and the answer to the following question (read carefully): "What would be different in a world that vampires ruled?" Keep your responses BRIEF--limit your answers to 75 words or less (no matter how tempted you are to go over the limit). Winners will receive an email from me before the weekend.

Although this is an exclusive AICN event, it is slightly overbooked to make sure we have a full house. And for God's sakes, if there's even the slightest chance you'll have to back out of attending if you do win, don't enter. You'd be amazed how many last-minute emergencies (or other lame excuses) crop up in the 12 hours before every screening. If you have a job that might make you late or unable to attend, or an ill/pregnant relative, or a temperamental significant other, or a scratchy throat, do not enter.

Good luck, everyone! Hope to see you there.

What you need is Capone, he brings more screenings to Chicago than every other writer on this site brings to their respective cities combined. Wel.. that's not saying much. Capone nails down more screenings in a season than every other lazy-ass writer on this site brings to their respective cities combined in a fucking year. Good work, Capone! Keep that shit up!

    Harry, Capone!!!

    by oceanwang

Pleeeeease more Twin Cities screenings. If Windy or Jeremy don't want to host them anymore than OceanWang will gladly lend his services. I have no public speaking skills and am relatively unpleasant to be around on account of the smells. But my martial arts background and Grizzly Adams beard more than qualify me for such an endeavor...

    Is Capone dissing LEAP YEAR?

    by avastar

Have he seen it or not? From the trailer I think it looks very charming for a Rom Com, and I usually loathe them. Amy Adams is always breathtaking, and Matthew Goode as folksy and smart-alecky Irishmen set in small town Ireland is intriguing. Will it be formulaic, possibly? But there's a chance it will be good.

this is ridiculous. I used to blame Capone for this shit but after his marathon holiday one man show on this site i realize he is the only one on here who gives a fuck. Cheers Capone. Oh and if Vampires ruled the world there would be no more blow jobs. That is not a world I want to live in.
