    Saw this last year

    by chakraborty

It's a good war film, but it's dark and melodramatic, and while there are some good action sequences in it, it's not an action film. It's about as much of an action film as Saving Private Ryan is an action film. I'd recommend it, but you should know what you're getting into before you see it.

It's good, like Platoon or Saving Private Ryan....

    by chakraborty

...only, instead of gun battles, they fight with swords, and sometimes cannons. There are some really good action sequences, but it's a war film...and not fun like Ip Man.

It is definitely Epic like those films (IP MAN IS FANTASTIC!).. But it has a completely different feel. I believe it is one of Jet Li's best performances ever! I don't want to ruin anything by saying too much..

    by asimovlives

Pretty good. Some impressive earlier battle scenes. visually stunning. This chineses really know how to make epic movies look epic. The second half of the story turns into a story of romantic drama and betrayal. Supposedly based on real events, though heavily stylized and fictionalized. On a trivia note, the mvoei is set during a particullary brutal civil war, the Taiping Rebellion, which some think caused more deaths then the whole of the WWII. Might very well be an exageration, but the lower estimates put the death toll in around the 20 millions.

the chinese know how to compensate like nobody else

    by supermarch

But you still have the tiniest dicks of any race and no amount of epic posturing or economic attack will change that.

Plus...the second your movies get a trailer they get released for downloading or streaming. Your economy is its own worst enemy but I guess some day maybe you'll be able to tell an epic story about that and how it all goes to shit?

I saw this last year. Temper the expectations

    by ogieoglethorpe

I bought this on blu last year.. (hkflix or dddhouse.com probably). It's good, but not stunning like I expected. Wasn't a keeper, I sold it on ebay. Keep your expectations in check and you'll enjoy it.

    Not a martial arts movie

    by hipshot

Rather, this is a war movie, with some (a lot) of non-explosive weapon combat. Li has done a ton of movies that center around the Shaolin Temple or dedicated martial artists. I'd bet he no longer wants to train as hard as he did for some of those. Doesn't mean he won't USE martial arts in a film. Probably just that it's no longer fun half-killing himself to look perfect.

Probably no Hebrew School for my kids

    by yackbacker

I don't have kids yet, but I'm not particularly religious. I do want them to know the history of our people- that's important to me. But the dogma of a faith doesn't appeal to me personally. If my kids reach an age and say "I am religious" I won't discourage them either. I will observe holidays with them, to teach them the historical context, but I wouldn't limit that to just Judaism either. I would want my kids to be as religiously and culturally educated as possible.

Not your standard Jet Li flick....

    by gearfree

But it was still a decent tale of brotherly betrayal. All about where the loyalties lie. Its somewhat ironic about all the bad blood keeping it excessively staggered in its release.
