REPO MEN, not a remake, trailer - is restricted, has boobies, blood and Jude Law!

Published at:  Dec 23, 2009 6:40:46 PM CST

SPOILER ALERT !!

Hey folks, Harry here... and I'm pretty happy about this. I haven't been following REPO MEN thus far. Just the title made me think about glowing trunks - but was very happy to see that while the film is about Repo Men, it is a science fiction film about bionic body parts that get repossessed when you miss your payments. That's all manners of fucked up, and I wonder if the new Health Bill has a proviso for bionic body part repossession.... because frankly... we should be protected from this future. You have to fill out one of those PROOF OF AGE things to see the trailer, but it's pretty much totally worth the effort.

Here ya go!!!

And I like them, a lot! Even if the movie ends up sucking, you've got to give them kudos for the concept. And with Jude Law and Forest Whitaker in there you'd have to have a pretty bad script not to get something reasonably entertaining out of it.

    Corwin--I'm A Sad Opera Troll....

    by tensticks

Corwin--I'm friends with the folks who made the Genetic Opera. Trust me, it CAN be this blatant and shameless. I'm not at liberty to divulge all of what I've been told, but take my word for it--this piece of shite would not exist if not for the Opera. You have NO idea how closely and consciously this project shadowed the Opera, backroom dealings and all. If it ever goes to a major court battle (and I hope it does) no judge in his/her right mind could see otherwise. (Hint: the original title was "Repossession Mambo", and a novelization exists under that name!) The only solace any of us Opera fans have is how bad this movie probably is--it's been in the can for almost 3 years--and it's likely to thoroughly tank. The cynical among you will probably disbelieve or not care, but everyone else, I beg of you--don't give your money to this thing, at least until you can see it for free.

That's exactly it. They were waiting, first, for the Opera to come out and the "fuss" to die down from its fans (it won't), and then they were waiting for a high profile project from one of the stars that they could piggyback it on. I do hope my friends can nail them in court, because I am pretty certain they can demonstrably upend all the writers' claims that he was working on this in the 90s. I don't expect this thing to turn much of a profit--after being shelved for 3 years AND retitled, with the novelization (clearly marked as such!) released under the old title a full year before--but it would be nice if any profits it DOES make could be assigned to the OPERA folks, since they fucking deserve it for creating the whole concept and storyline. It really is, seriously, almost a clone--sans the music.

Repo the genetic opera is available on DVD. You can get it pretty much anywhere that sells DVDs (yes even Wal Mart) or order it online. But it IS an opera, a rock (and specifically goth) opera specifically--there's more singing than dialogue--and while you may dig the concept, it still may not be your cup of tea--I personally love it, but I'm a fan of this sort of thing. But give it a try, I'd love to know what you think. morphiaflow@yahoo.com

Thanks! Nice to get the benefit of the doubt!

I didn't say Repo was bad- there were some good bits in it and some nice performances and song very catchy songs. As someone else said here, wasn;t quite my cup of tea. I apologise- I was trying to be funny at the expense of others and that's too easy to do sometimes. Forgive me.

I read the script for Repossession Mambo over a year before filming started and a long time before Repo was greenlit. I don't know the history. I don't think they should have changed the name to be honest. Doesn't do it any favors. Since you seem to know a lot about it, what came first, the book or the stage show. Still, it's ironic that both films were made about 2 steets away from each other at exactly the same time.

I'll see this one though like I did the singalong one and make my own mind up and take each on it's own merits. I sense a bit of Repo fanaticism surrounding this one so will take note for the future.

You're actually right. In my case, I suppose I'm "fanatical" (well, personally I'd say "passionate") about this particular facet of REPO because I know, inside and firsthand, a lot about this subject and its history, and I have a strong sense of righteous justice. For lack of a better term. But there are far, far, FAR bigger REPO fanatics than I am...

    Bellam--Radicals vs. Progressives

    by tensticks

Well, there is a heated debate among young-earth proponents, and some of them are actually quite radical in believing the earth might actually be as much as 12,000 years old. I think 6.5 thousand is as far as most of them go, however. I quote the Very Rev. William Hicks: "'You know, the world's twelve-thousand years old, and dinosaurs existed in that time, you'd think it would've been mentioned in the fucking bible at some point. "And o, Jesus and the disciples walked to Nazareth, but the trail was blocked by a giant brontosaurus with a splinter in his paw. And o, the disciples did run a-shrieking 'What a big fucking lizard, Lord.' But Jesus was unafraid, and he took the splinter from the brontosaurus' paw, and the big lizard became his friend. And Jesus sent him to Scotland where he lived in a Loch for oh so many years, inviting thousands of American tourists to bring their fat fucking families and their fat dollar bills. And O Scotland did praise the Lord. Thank you, Lord'."

Glad I'm not the only one. They should *ALL* be 'teasers' - whether 1 minute or 2.5. I thought Knight and Day trailer was that much better/anticipation-baiting just for resisting the urge so powerfully (comparatively obviously) to the modern trend.

Though I guess if I'm playing devil's advocate (and to myself), we also risk getting 'tricked' into seeing crap...definitely happened a couple times in mid-90s...but interwebs would seem to counter that for the semi-informed...

It doesn't matter if you care about Repo the Genetic Opera or not. This is IP theft straight up. If I made a movie about a Privateer named Jon Blackbird, who liked to drink brandy and had a magic compass that pointed at hidden treasure it would be the same thing. I could say well Privateers work under consent of the crown, he drinks a different drink and his compass only points at treasure not specifically the thing you want most. Its different enough. I don't say to go after Forest Whitaker, Jude Law, or Liev Schrieber all actors with whom I hold a deep respect. The likelihood they knew what was going on here is minimal, but at the end of the day you don't have to like Repo Opera to have a problem with this. Repo the Genetic Opera was a stage play over a decade ago, and the creators of Repo Men (which was titled Repossession Mambo until recently) had seen the musical and attempted to move the property on their behalf but when the Opera creators refused to give up creative control they sold the idea to Universal. They stole it you can say it looks badass or you're happy they stole it... but they did. It will be a bigger financial success than Genetic Opera by virtue of having the stars it has and it will definitely have a bigger release than one theatre at a time and 12 max at its peak.

    Legal claims for Repo?

    by pop_aristocrat

As much as I loved Repo: TGO, and hope those guys' creation continues to grow and gain a cult pastiche over the years, you can't expect them to be able to sue or gain any monetary profit off of this.
Reason why? You can't copyright a plot or synopsis. If the entire body of the work resembled the finished product closely enough, you could strike out with a plagiarism suit, but since this one isn't a musical, that probably won't happen.
you can't sue someone for having a similar synopsis, which is how Hollywood is able to keep releasing similar, redundant crap all the time without issue. Armageddon couldn't sue Deep Impact, Romero can't sue every zombie movie to come out since his, Dances with Wolves can't sue Avatar, Jurassic Park can't sue Carnosaur.
I remember ages ago, Phillip K. Dick was talking in interviews about suing Cameron over Terminator for stealing his notion of Replicants. This idea was summarily dismissed by courts and legal council. You can't fight 'similar' only 'exact'.

If 'Repo Men' is a rip-off of 'Repo!', then 'Repo!' must therefore be a rip-off of much-earlier 'Judge Dredd' comic strips and cyberpunk novels that featured organ-repossession in a dystopian future setting. The 'Repo!' writers didn't invent the concept, not by a long way, they were beaten to it by decades.

Second off,Repo the Gentic Opera was not that great. You have to admit, the people that liked that movie liked it before they ever laid eyes on it because it was goth and had singing and it was a fucking group thing. I don't begrudge anyone there opion of what is cool, but just because you and your friends like it doesn't mean it's a classic.Anybody remember how many shitty Pulp Fiction or Matrix rip offs that came right after the success of those movies? Except it was a horrifically bad rock-opera. Yes, Repo Men is a shameless conceptual ripoff, but frankly, "Repo: The Genetic Opera" was fucking TERRIBLE - a disjointed, nonsensical, amateur, shallow piece of shit. This, on the other hand, looks fun in a "Crank" sort of way. I'll see it.

You can search for my AICN review of the test screening, it was called The Repossession Mambo and NO it is NOT a Repo Genetic Opera rip off. They were developed at the same time, Opera just happened to come out much earlier. About 1/3 of this movie is awesome. The 2nd act is horribly boring with a forced romance and complete shift in tone. The 1st act is great and one of the finales is amazing - the hallway scene which you see a bit of in the trailer is like a bloody American version of the Oldboy hallyway fight. I agree this trailer gives way too much away. The big problem was I hated the final ending. It's a huge cliched plot device and if they had just ended it 10 minutes earlier it would have gone down as fucking daring and great. I hope they've changed it but I doubt it.

C'mon, I can buy a lot of SciFi stuff but one that is 'slightly in the future' but where its okay to wholesale kill people who don't pay bills? Right, the US government would be like, totally, kill those taxpayers and leave a blody mess, they didn't pay so we don't care. Just to far fetched.

Philip K Dick wanted to sue Cameron over Terminator? That's pretty amazing, considering he died two years before Terminator came out. I mean, I know he was prescient, but wow... In all seriousness, though, Terminator more resembles Second Variety, which was made into the so-so Screamers.

    by sgt.steiner

Better than the lot. By the way, I think we should confiscate all copies of "Repo The Genetic Opera" and replace them with copies of "Phantom of the Paradise". A little social experiment. And to the above poster who was going on about Nascar as if it were the most "normal" thing in the world, someone should introduce that fucker to J.G. Ballard. Lastly, it is rather to funny to see "Repo Men' clearly rehashing "Logan's Run" character dynamics. Forest Whitaker as Richard Jordan + Jude Law as Michael York = wackiness!

Just Repo was cheap and cheerful and out in no time and this one took a bit longer. I still think this one will be good- the script was- and like I said, that was WAY before the Repo movie was announced. Noone ever told me- which came first the Repossession Mambo book or the stage show of Repo? Let's face it, it's not like a hugely hard thing to think the two might have come about at the same time independantly. Repo fans are mental for it though aren't they?

Sgt: Phantom of the Paradise is fucking awesome. Bile: Repo the stage play was developed circa 1999 and performed on stage in LA in 2001. The Repo-Mambo people were part of the regular audience and worked in the same building where Repo was edited. Trust me. Regardless of who may have previously come up with the concepts of organ repossession for a comic book or something back in the day, these two projects are intimately intertwined, but the Mambo would not have existed without the Opera. And yes, REPO fans are nuts. I say that as one of them.

Repo: The Genetic Opera is not everyone's cup of tea. Not everyone likes it or is going to like it. Some won't even give it a chance because of some of the castmembers. That's fine. I get that. But that's all still beside the point. Ripoff is the name of the game in Hollywood, I get that too--but in this case it's so blatant, and so demonstrable, that anyone with a conscience or a shred of integrity should stand up and say "Enough!" I mean, they didn't do it when Deep Space Nine ripped off Babylon 5, they didn't do it when Denis Leary stole Bill Hicks' entire act (except the actual humour)...but dammit, you can do it now! Do NOT give your money to this thing!

That's got to be a joke. I can't belive that some one would stand up during a two hour or so film and mime out the fucking thing. I'm sorry but that's an image I just can't shake. On a final note, In a world where Armageddon and Deep Impact,Tombstone and Wyatt Earp all exist together, why the fuck would some one be bothered about this movie? Does this movie's existence negate The Genetic Opera's?

Repo was a stage show before it was a movie

    by connor225

An obscure one, but it existed. And that puts to rest any question as to which is a rip off of which.

And one is clearly a rip off of the other. The fact that they were "developed at the exact same time" just makes it more likely.

Also, Asteroids hitting Earth is an old stock sci fi plot, Wyatt Earp was a real person, but "in the future artificial organs are bought on credit and repossessed" is too insanely specific for it to be more than shallow theft.

REPO: Genetic Opera SUCKED ELEPHANT DICK

    by kaiser soze

Without going into the intelligent and witty (and popular, on this TB) attack of "durr, you're a fag if you like that movie," I still say R:TGO sucked ass. First off, it was a poorly executed "hip" musical with a dismal cast. Second, it was created by the hack douchebags who are responsible for the Saw franchise and, in turn, the death of horror movies that try to scare you. Third, and most importantly, it starred Paris Hilton. PARIS MOTHERFUCKING HILTON. And anyone who actually spends money to support anything she does, be it shitty movies or shitty perfume, should be knighted as a Sir Douchebag of the Dildotic Empire, as you have helped to keep that no-talent syphillized skank relevant for just a little longer. I could honestly care less if Repo Men does business or not, but who gives a shit if it lifted its story from a movie that the public at large never saw and couldn't give two shits about. Avatar lifted its story from Dances With Costner, which a lot of people saw, and it's still raking in money hand over fist and was a damn fine experience. Sometimes I honestly believe this site is infested with trolls who are just itching to complain about something, no matter how mundane.

    by joshualukebauer

Repo wasn't bad, there were at least two or three serviceable songs and the look of it was phenomenal, as was the concept (it was also the only Paris Hilton film I've ever seen and to her credit, I kept forgetting it was her in the role) and though this one looks awesome, it loses points for lack of originality...It just looks like they took the Genetic Opera idea, hammered out the bad parts, threw some money in the right places, and made a better movie...Great, but not exactly a groundbreaking new idea

I HAVE seen the movie and it sucked. Hard. As for the one guy from Saw, that's all it takes. That franchise has, along with the Hostel films and Bay's Platinum Dunes, ruined the genre of horror, taking all the scare from it. The same guy also did Dead Silence, which was embarrassingly lame. As for Paris Hilton, whether she's in a film for one minute or one hour, supporting the film gives her a residual paycheck and strengthens her acting confidence, and that is just plain wrong. But yes, I have seen R:TGO, was drug to it by the girl I was dating at the time, and was bored out of my mind. Sorry you liked it, but there's no stick up my ass or any other orafice, it just fucking sucked big floppy donkey dong. Deal with it.
