Oui, we have Nolan's new INCEPTION trailer... but in French, of course!!!

Published at:  Dec 23, 2009 1:39:46 AM CST

Hey folks, Harry here and our source, Barrett's eagle eyes spotted Christopher Nolan's INCEPTION - which is intoxicatingly fascinating, while also being impossible to really dissect. What is the film about? Who cares? All I know is that I really really truly want to see it as soon as humanly possible. There's some amazing effects stuff going on, but to what ends? Now - without further blathering on... thanks to the French, here's a dubbed trailer for INCEPTION!

Even in French, Nolan never fails to impress. I'm hoping for a return to his Memento-like days, but, until then, big, summer blockbusters that aren't condescending are very welcome in my mind.

AICN never fails in regards to someone offering retarded comments.
Not that Nolan would ever visit this site, but I would say to him take any comments like "overrated" or "sucks" as compliments, it means that you have achieved critical success and mainstream success, its only when you are yet to make it big or remain obscure will you ever get close to universal praise on this site.

While I think TDK is a tad overrated(third act problems), Nolan is still a terrific director by virtue of Memento, The Prestige and Batman Begins. Inception looks like a melding of all his previous films into one.

At this point, I'm only looking forward to this, Iron Man 2 and Toy Story 3 next summer. It really doesn't seem to be much of an improvement over this previous piss-ass summer.

    by roberts

Is this a proper trailer or has it been filmed from the back of a cinema? Apart from a couple of moving buildings and a train driving up a road (which does look great) I cant really make make out a lot of the images. Not in an arty way either just a poor quality image way. Surely this is not a finalised trailer. Dont get me wrong, I'm not slamming the trailer content, just the quality of the reproduction.

You guys only translated the v-o beginning...

    by audaabutayi

    ..then it goes on:
    LEO to someone (probably WOMAN)
“Don't ever use your memory, create entirely new things.”

    LEO V-O
He's hiding something and he needs to find out.

    OTHER DUDE:
We have to get out of here: it's over!

    LEO
“This isn't the way it should have happened.”

    WOMAN
    “Help me!” X2

    Side note:
The Dark City homage with the city folding up. That city is Paris, so is the cafe where Leo's sitting.

Incursion is akin to an invasion, not an inception. Inception is the birth of something, “incursion” means an invasion. This trailer is Canadian for sure, they're very strict about translating everything literally. So it's weird the title isn't "création" or "naissance".

    Man in High Castle?

    by audaabutayi

As much as I love that novel, I don't feel it would have such an impact today. Ubik, on the other hand, would be right up Nolan's alley. My favorite Nolan remains Memento, probably the best noir of the naughties with Mulholland Dr. Which is why I say: Ubik, by the Nolan bros, starring Joseph G-L and Michael Caine or Nick Nolte as Runciter (a tall actor with chops, used unexpectedly). Either that or Palmer Eldritch. But Nolan seems to love writing his own stories (Insomnia aside), so maybe it's up to Fincher to adapt PDK.

That Socrates quote got me thinking: Maybe the plot of Inception is that the guy's mind is trapping/toying with Leo and crew inside his head to keep them from stealing his idea for some marvelous thing. Essentially a metaphysical/SF/puzzle heist flick, Melville meets PDK.

That's because the dubbing is done by Quebec French people, not actual French guys.

Not that the actual French dubbing would be better.

By the way, the rest of the trailer, from 0:35 on, translates roughly to this:

-DiCaprio to Page: "Never look into your memory, create completely new locations!"
-DiCaprio: "He (or they) is (are) hiding something, and we must find what it is."
-Gordon-Levitt: "We need to get out of here. It's over."
And the final quote from DiCaprio: "It's not the way it was supposed to happen."

Then a women crying for help.

You're welcome. (Though I'm not sure about the first quote, but the trailer is kind of murky.)

I mean, it's possible the US one won't be edited together as well, but I think maybe (maybe?!) we'll get a better understanding of what might be going on? Or maybe we'll be more confused? I was thinking more along the lines of Leo having to relive the memory of some event in order to get to what he's looking for (hence the tagline: "votre esprit et la scene du crime", i.e. your soul/mind is the scene of the crime). What I imagine is that Leo's mind starts to turn on him, and he becomes confronted with more than he expected. The mystery will probably be finding out how much of it is of his own making, and how much from what he's looking for.

I got thinking about Plato because of the whorl that he's spinning at the beginning, just before the VO goes on about the creative/destructive capacities of an idea. So it does seem to be that it will be a SF movie dealing with metaphysical problems, much like Memento, but it also seems that he will be addressing himself directly through the medium to the audience to say something about the medium itself and whatever he's trying to convey (like the Prestige).

Yes ... that sounds plausible, too. Either way, I'm hooked. Nolan is def. taking this to a meta-meta level. Leo even looks like Nolan in the movie and in that poster where's looking down the city street at the water. I love the way he keeps elaborating on these themes of self, identity, memory and place.

Nolan is, and his Batman movies suck

    by ganymede3001

The Batman movies were way to inconsistent, slow and boring. The current itineration of his character doesn't work well in modern times. All he does is fly up and down on his utility belt wires, with Michael Bay style camera work during the fight scenes, where you can hardly see anything. He should of made a Batman Beyond motion picture, that character works so much better in these modern times. They've been telling the same story with this Batman for the last 20 years. Plus, Nolan is to much of a pussy and not talented enough to cast Robin. I know you DC fanboys don't like Robin, but guess what, us non DC fans do. I've always known the franchise as Batman and Robin, not Batman. That's why his Batman movies seem so empty, incomplete and hollow. That why he's fucking overrated.

we haven't included Robin in our films because..

    by jettl93

frankly robin is hard to convey in the relaistic world of batman, if you go straight up faithful adaption, it send the movies into a make belive world where a kid in green underwear and no head protection can fight mobsters, if you make robin fit into the world we've created then you would have to remove him so far from the comic roots that fans would cry and at that point why not just create a new sidekick alltogether. I'm not saying we'll never see robin again, infact Nolan has mentioned in many of our musing meetings that one way robin would work would be to go for sort of an oracle role, meaning robin never sees conbat but he stays back in the batcave being batman's communication. a role we've seen alfred and lucious fox take in the nolanverse

    About Chris Nolan. . .

    by darth_kaos

Ok, the guy has skills, but since the Dark Knight, all you geeks think he's god. Listen, I'll admit, TDK is a damn good movie, not a perfect movie (tons of flaws folks), but I have a feeling this movie is going try to please the TDK fans too much. Just look at some of the shots in that trailer, almost for a tee, the same shots in TDK. Also have you seen the poster art for this film? Again, like the TDK.
The Prestige (his best in my opinion) showed he can do more than Batman movies, I just hope you guys don't force him into a one note filmmaker that shoots the same movie over and over again.

but then never go on to list those flaws. So seriously if TDK has "tons of flaws" then please do us all a favor and list them. People just like to rag on the dark knight, because in many ways its the perfect film, and while it's never a custom in hollywood to pat your own back, WE made one HELL of a good film, and i say "we" because desptie the laging you toss at me I am not hollywooods second coming, I'm simply just an impoprtant link in this chain we call show

He wants to remake your world, Mr. Murdoch..." The Strangers know their shit... and it's only fitting that I comment on this topic with the spirit of my namesake and inspiration... I do indeed see quite a few Proyas/Dark City references here... On the other side, the Nolan fanboys crack me up. I just can't get into his movies -- they're cold to me; they don't seem to have a heart... and if anything, I like "Batman Begins" more than "TDK."

    The Dogs Weren't A Flaw

    by crow3711

A trained, vicious dog is nothing to fuck with. You guys are kidding yourselves acting like taking out a dog is no big deal. They are much faster and leaner than humans, and they are going to come in and get at least one good bite before you are able to throw them or punch them off, at which point realistically they would just come back for more. The people saying different just don't know. They are thinking of their house pets. Dogs are vicious animals when trained. Even Batman would get bitten multiple times, especially at the beginning when he couldn't turn his head. You're just being stupid, sorry to say. That isn't a flaw, in any way. I don't really understand this JettL guy, but he is right, the dark knight is basically a perfect film, and thats why people want to hate it. Batmans "voice", while I understand it annoys some and makes some laugh, is entirely realistic, necessary, and imo completely badass. It would fucking work in real life. You'd shit yourself, you wouldn't laugh. And it at leasts makes the effort of hiding his identity more, which no other Batman has ever tried because they were entirely unrealistic and lame for the most part. The only "flaw" I've seen, and I've watched it at least 20 times now, and it still really isn't a flaw, is that the jokers "plan that isn't a plan" always works out a little too well. I'll give the movie this personally because movies need to have certain levels of coincedence to work, any film ever made relies on it, but there are times where hes a little too prescient in his plans. But that's chaos, and terrorism, at its core, so in a way it works with the themes of the film.

Having said all that, my one biggest complaint when watching the film is that right before the chase that leads to the capture of the Joker, when Harvey is in custody, there is that flaming firetruck blocking the road. The camera blatantly shows the other side of the street has no cars on it, and its just one flaming firetruck. Yea, its scary and stuff, but this is a bunch of SWAT trucks. So the guy diverts down onto the dangerous and confined "Lower Fifth" even though he knows its insane and probaly exactly what the Joker wants? There should have at least been another Firetruck blocking the other side of the street forcing them down there. It just seems ridiculous they wouldn't just go in oncoming traffic lane, which is shown to be empty, instead. So explain that one JettL. Because even though its intensely minor, its the one thing in the whole movie I believe wasn't executed properly.

    Flaws of TDK:

    by redegiraahgnal

An uneven script that starts every 15 minutes a new subplot which leads to nowhere (Capture Scarecrow, the masked vigilantes, Batman travels around the world to catch a Mafia guy, someone finds out that Batman is Bruce Wayne, Gordon "dies", The Joker sets up a bomb, the Joker sets up another bomb, then the Joker sets up another Bomb, Two-Face appears, the Joker sets up a bomb to blow up two ferries full of extras who we have never seen before...), Bale's cheesy overacting ("Boo, my voice is scary!"), the lack of any sympathetic characters (Even Harvey Dent comes across as an arrogant prick. Why is he so popular?), Ledger's annoying overacting ("Boo, my voice is scary and I wave my hand and lick my lips. Look, I'm a psychopath, ha ha."), the scene where the Joker blows up the hospital while he's dressed up as a nurse (Way to ruin a supposedly dramatic scene), a cheesy message after the ferry-scene (who else expected the people on the ferries to hold hands and sing christmas songs so loud that The Joker hears them?), how the seriously good decision to not give the Joker an origin story was ruined, by rubbing it into the audience's faces and turning it into a running gag...

Concerning the diversion to the lower fifth

    by jettl93

Gordon, Dent and the Batman all knew the joker would try to fuck shit up during the prisoner convoy, so the swat trucks took the lower fifth in an atempt to trap the joker if he attacked. (this of course didn't work because they underestimated the coordinating skills of the joker) Besides the convoy was already in momentum, diverting all the way around the firetruck would have just cause chaos and opened up the defense line too much, therefore taking a slight left and hitting the lower fifth worked on both levels

  • you know where something happens at the beggining and then no new storythreads are introduced at all so the audience doesn't get confused?Thing in TDK like the vigilantes, Mr reese figuring out batman's identity or the joker planting a bomb aren't flaws..they are called "subplots" and they are intrigal in crafting a competent script and movie. and in case you weren't actualy watching the film, all of those subplots intertwine by the films end, making them important to the overal story

    by redegiraahgnal

And not a script that starts every 15 minutes a new subplot, ends it with a big explosion and then moves on to the next one. Because that's what happened in TDK. They didn't come together in the end, they ended with each one big explosion and nobody ever talked about them again.
And I would like to know what's all of a sudden wrong with movies that have one straight story? I mean, are you telling me that a straight, but well crafted script is inferior to a badly written, subplot loaded script that doesn't make any sense in the end? Sorry, but I prefer my scripts to be good. Doesn't matter how many subplots they have.

    About some of the “flaws”

    by adelai niska

Batman going to Hong Kong is not a subplot it is the catalyst for the mob bringing in the Joker. Capturing scarecrow was to show that this is the DC world now- Supervillains are popping up in Gotham. Joker sets up bombs- one was to free himelf, two were to attack Batman’s friends. The ferries was Joker’s ultimate test- proving that in primal live-or-die situations, people will abandon the law and kill each other. Harvey dent was not a prick, he was a schizo who alternated between doing good works and tormenting people. He was, ahem, two-faced. Anyone who insults Ledger’s performance is a tool. Dressing like a nurse- let me spell this one out for you: He. Is. The Joker. That’s the sort of shit Joker thinks is funny but nobody else quite understands. And the Joker’s vague origin was not “rubbed in people’s faces.” He tells TWO “how I got these scars” stories and on the third try he gets interrupted. That’s a basic rule of three, structure-wise. The only flaw for me was Bale’s batvoice.

how the fuck did the plots go nowhere?

    by jettl93

Vigalante's are introduced...later int he movie joker kidnaps one, kills him on live TV and hangs the body for all to see, sending the message to gotham that even batman can't save you.Reese discovers Batman's identity, later in the movie he goes on tv to let out the secret, joker knows this will ruin his fun so he threatens gotham unless reese is killed. The people on the ferry are of course not indroduced before hand but that their purpose, they are there simply to show people are in danger and what gotham is capable of if they trust the good in themselves. also i think most will agree that the characters on the ferry made you either like or hate them in a short period of time, you alll love seeing that dick wimp out and you love seeing the fat bearded captain pause and state that they are still there because the other sip hadn't turned their key eitheranyone who things plot points where inroduced and never followed up on or didn't mesh with themain plot is a fucking idiot and should die

    by bendersshinyass

Jettl93... the thing i find most offensive abouty you is when you start to proclaim how robin can't exist in the nolanverse because it would be 'silly'.... i call bullshit on that, just sounds like writers block to me. i could name a dozen... well, maybe 3, story lines that could feature Robin. here's one off the top of my head. he's a 14 year old kid, but dont think of him like any 14 year old kid. think of him like the 14 year old bruce wayne who would become batman. So here we have bruce wayne seeing himself in this kid, while at the same time trying to do away with him. but how can he? batman can't harm a kid. so this kid persists. and in the end, for some amazing reason yet to be seen, batman allows him to join him for one battle out on the streets against a bad guy. and guess what... robin gets killed. just like he did in the comics. sounds pretty fucking kick arse and nolan verse to me YOU FUCKING HACK

it's that Batman is such a rich character on his own, why throw away several movies worth of good solo batman stories just to add a chacter that is highly debatable as robin is. IMO the addition of robin into the Burton/shumacer series was very misplaced, batman forever should have never used robin, it should have been a straight up solo batman tale

There are plenty of flaws in The Dark Knight

    by chewtoy

And plenty of scenes that go nowhere. I've seen it twice, and I'm not going to go back and watch it again just to get the details right, but one that stood out when I was watching it was the police raid that was about to happen just before the Joker went on TV... the one set up by the mob guy who Batman dropped off the roof and later shows up in the hospital to talk to the cops saying the Joker was taking things too far. Gorden's in position to move in and then... other shit happens instead.
Beyond that, there's the impossible sequence of events necessary for parts of the Joker's plans (I love the scene in the apartment overlooking the parade with the timer on the blinds. There are so many questions about that one that it'd take a separate post to detail them all, but I'd love to hear the logic behind setting that up.)
Beyond any of that is the problem of trying to make Batman *too* real, which then invites us to question the total fantasy nature of the rest. (The fact that Batman wasn't supposed to have been able to turn his head before this movie alone is retarded enough. I understand that the *actor* in the costume couldn't, but I also know the actor in the costume couldn't do half of the shit that Batman does. May as well tell me that Batman has the power to turn into a CGI character to leap off of buildings while you're at it.) Then there's the idea that a city on the lookout for terrorist attacks isn't going to notice the *multiple* times that the Joker must have had a bazillion barrels of gasoline installed at different places around the city. "Hey Mac, I got yer 250 drums of wired explosives... where's the best place to stow 'em on your ferry?"
Finally, the morality of the movie is pretty insulting, from the "torture is fine, but make sure the public doesn't catch you doing it" message, to the "This time, the threat is big enough to justify spying on every citizen, innocent or guilty, but just this once and we'll never do it again. Honest" cel phone thing to the end declaration that "the most noble thing we can do is to cover up the truth and make sure the public never finds out... for their own good." Of course, all of that may just be my personal biases.
Oh, and the love story subplot was a complete whiff. There was zero emotional investment in Rachel's death for the audience. It wasn't tragic... it was another checkmark on the script's plot points.
All that said, it wasn't a bad movie by any stretch of the imagination.... just not "flawless".

    by darth_kaos

I know some have already pointed out some of them, but my main issue was the whole going to china thing. That whole subplot could have been cut and not miss a beat. I'll explain.
    1. Never introduce the Chinese guy, period.
It would have changed nothing what the Joker did, or the impact of the cellphone tech. They could have just had the Joker steal the money (like he did at the Bank) and Batman could have came up with the sonar stuff. Simple has that. It would have altered nothing. The joker would have done the same stuff, and it would have cut about 20 mins from the Movie.
Like I tell my friends, TDK was 20mins over from greatness.

The dark knigh though a technically superb film..

    by emeraldboy

was utterly dead and soul less. and by technically I mean that. technically, It was clear amd sharp. and for that nolan should be applauded. for that reason it was one of the best comic book films ever made. two things I had issues with the dark knigh. was rachel dawes. why bring her back just to kill her off. they botched her storyline very badly. two no one has mentioned Lucious fox. He was the man who gave batman his weaponery and then they go and screw that character up as well by making the audience uttterly confused about what his motives really are. and they are never explained. after killing off dawes. they then saw well this is the person she really wanted to marry. oh and balle carried that scene off terribly. He just cant do emotion. oh and the movie sags in the middle. and rushes to fast to get to the end. I not sure Nolan will do another batman movie. no one has heard a peep out of bale since the terminator debacle. public enemies didnt exactly set the world on fire.

I was going to explain in my previous post (before it got cut off) that by cutting the whole Chinese connection. It would have changed nothing what the Joker did. Just have him steal the Money (like he did at the opening). As for the Sonar tech stuff. Just have batman come up with that. It wouldn't have change nothing in the plotline or response to the outcome, expect to cut the movie down a bit.

Bale is a horrible Batman and a horrible actor. Out of alot of positives the TDK did have, mine was that Bale wasn't in every scene. I know it's too much to ask, but it would be nice if they re-casted Batman.
Now, one would say, if Nolan doesn't come back, Bale won't come back. If that was only true (Bale is contracted to do one more). But the bad part would be that Nolan won't finish out his Batman trilogy, and we all know he's doing a third.
Before any of you geeks start defending Bale, I'll mention two words: Terminator: Salvation.

I really disagree about the morality of the movie. All of the things you complain about definately ARE beyond questionable and cross a line that Batman shouldn't cross. But in the end, Batman loses. His friends die, he kills someone, in pretty every way in the Batman Vs Joker battle of wills, Joker wins. And this happens BECAUSE Batman betrays good, honest principles. Joker only loses in the end because the regualar citizens refuse to play his game. They have more courage and strength than Batman does because they refuse to let the Joker dictate how far they go. (they also have more strength than Batman gives them credit for when he decides to hide the truth). In my mind this all Bush Admin allegory, with Joker representing the threat of terror and Batman representing exactly how NOT to defend against it. The ferry represents the people who are, on the whole, better than those who claim to defend them.

If you really work with Nolan, then send along this idea for where to take the next Batman movie. I won't charge you guys, I'll just be happy to know that you guys made the right choice when I walk out of the theater on opening night.

The "villain" of the 3rd film is......Batman himself. You've already set it up for him to be hunted down by the police and the citizens of Gotham. So let's say it comes out somehow (I don't know, maybe by the guy who was gonna reveal Batman in the 2nd one) that Bruce Wayne is Batman. That's the setup. Bruce becomes a wanted man, loses his house and his company, and has to live by his wits. Maybe he even contemplates petty crime to stay afloat in an echo of his petty thief days in the first film. The police put a team together to hunt him down and the leader of the team is a highly trained hard ass who goes by the name of Robin. He's not a pansy in green tights, he's every bit Batman's equal, and he'll stop at nothing to find Bruce and lock him up. I won't say where to take it from there, but I'd imagine you'd have to incorporate another criminal element into the mix that would give Bruce a way to redeem himself in the eyes of the people, and possibly even give the opportunity for him and Robin to ultimately team up and fight on the same side. Anyways this is just my two cents and I strongly feel like your first two movies have set up the story to go in this direction. I also DO NOT CARE at all if some pricks on this talkback find it offensive that I would suggest Robin could be a badass, special ops type of guy. Frankly, the character could use a little badass. And he should be played by someone awesome, like Michael Biehn.

    BIGGEST flaw in TDK-

    by sonnyfern

GODDAMN Two-Face. No movie has even come CLOSE to capturing the badassness of Two-Face. The animated series was the only thing that nailed him PERFECTLY. He's my favorive villain and it just pisses me off no filmmaker seems to really get the character. Now don't get me wrong Eckhart did a fine job, and the f/x were cool, but it's still nothing compared to what he's SUPPOSE to be. And to say TDK didn't have flaws or too many subplots is ridiculous...because it DID. There's the Chinese subplot, the mafia subplot, the guy finding out Batmans identity subplot (which could have have been removed entirely) the Gordon dying subplot (which was complete BS because we SEE the motherfucker get shot in the back...blood even flies out) the goddamn whole "he WANTED to be caught" was bullshit, I can see him having a back-up plan but c'mon he WANTED to be caught, and yeah, they have The Joker at the boat, they have him SURROUNDED, but then they just give up and leave because hospitals are threatened? I understand they have to get out of there...but they just ALL leave? WTF? But look, I ADORE the movie, it's an amazing flick, I have no problem forgiving the flaws at all, it doesn't diminish the movie at all, but they are there.

    Trailer interpretation

    by octaveaeon

Let’s begin with what we know and may serve as clues: the movie has been described (by Nolan?) as “a contemporary sci-fi actioner set within the architecture of the mind.”
A crime of some sort is committed.
Leo becomes involved. How, we don’t know, but from the trailer we see him confident with the use of weapons, so he’s likely a detective or cop brought in to solve the crime.
Ellen Page plays a character called Ariadne; though we’re not sure of the nature of her relation to Leo, she seems to know something about using “your memory to build entirely new places.” This capacity is related to the crime.

I think Leo is a detective/cop hired to solve a crime related to a new technology capable of extracting specific information from the mind. I think that the person responsible for the development of this technology is the victim of this crime, and that Leo has to relive the victim’s memories in order to find out what happened (hence the tagline: "your mind (read: soul) is the scene of the crime”). But throughout the investigation Leo finds out more about the crime and the technology than he expected: the victim, probably anticipating the possibility that other people would use the very technology he created to pry open its secrets from his mind, created a labyrinth in his mind to protect it. Leo is then confronted with unexpected obstacles that he must see through if he is to solve the mystery, and find his way out. Ariadne will be crucial in this.

Let’s speculate on the clues. Ariadne and the labyrinth motifs point to the myth of Theseus and the Minotaur. Theseus, an Athenian hero, is sent to Crete along with other Athenian youths as sacrificial victims meant as a pay of tribute to King Minos who had defeated the Athenians in a previous war. Instead, Theseus kills the Minotaur and escapes the labyrinth with the help of Ariadne (who gave him the sword and a ball of thread to find his way out), and effectively liberates Athens from foreign rule. Theseus is therefore a ‘founder-hero’, helping to create the political foundation of Athens. At least that is what the myth serves to suggest (the myth justifies the political reality and identity of Athenians). Or, in other words, the myth of Theseus is an example of how a “a single idea from the human mind can build cities.”

Now that spinning top at the beginning of the trailer and that also seems to be an important motif in the marketing of the movie (look at the official website). The fact that it appears just before the VO goes on about the creative/destructive capacities of an idea, along with the ‘architecture of the mind’ tagline and the corresponding visual depiction of the city as a labyrinth, I was also reminded of Plato’s myth of Er (which can be seen as a commentary on the myth of Theseus and other related, political, myths).

The spinning top (ie. whorl and spindle) is used in the myth to demonstrate figuratively the importance of art in illustrating – i.e. ‘showing’ in the visual sense – that which cannot be seen (in this case the role of death in understanding the importance of virtue and justice). But in the context of the dialogue, the myth itself is meant to illustrate the tension between the artistic method and the philosopher’s (Socratic) method of teaching or guiding ‘souls’ (individuals but also the community in general) towards the light of truth and goodness (what we may refer to as true ‘knowledge’). To make a long story short, Plato was critical of the artist and their methodology (e.g. their use of myths), but realized that the proper use of art in helping illustrate certain ‘ideas’ was nevertheless necessary for the proper education of an individual, and even more so for a community in order to keep other (most) individuals in line with the norms of their community. Hence the creation and use of this myth at the end of the ‘Republic’: it serves as a propaedeutic for those students most capable and willing of understanding what he has to teach; and as ‘propaganda,’ so to speak (the word is anachronistic and polemical, but I use intentionally nonetheless), for those who might miss the underlying message (the way to the idea of the Good) but still be susceptible to the explicit argument presented throughout the entire dialogue (tyranny is not more beneficial than justice).

Though Plato wanted his audience to imbibe the medicine of moderation, so as to harmonize the community as a whole, he knew that his rhetoric would never be able to supplant those of the artists, sophists, and politicians in general, who only had to say what their audience wanted to hear, or resort to exhilarating and entertaining stories for the sake of approval (but not necessarily for the cultivation of intellect and morality), in order to drown out the arguments of the (Socratic) philosopher. So Plato decided to write down the ‘divine pattern’ of his teaching, embodied in the character of Socrates, and interspersed throughout the dialogues themselves.

So the myth of Er is meant to illustrate the primacy of the philosopher’s vision (the ‘socratic way’) to that of the artist in helping us make the right decisions. Er is a warrior (cf. Theseus) who is given a glimpse of the eternal realm where the fate of our souls are regulated (it turns out that we choose our own fates; this means that instead of blaming others for our misfortunes it is probably best to live life according to the best of our abilities and to try to learn and become stronger from our experiences, the underlying message being that if we want to avoid making the same mistake of unwisely ‘choosing our fate’, we had better use the opportunities granted to us in life to grow in the full sense of the term: to fight like a warrior when necessary and to accept and understand one’s limitations like a [Socratic] philosopher).

The ‘spindle of Necessity’ is meant to illustrate this ‘harmonizing’ principle which unites individual souls with the ‘movement of the kosmos,’ or what we would refer to now as the ‘essence or framework of the universe.’ The idea being that just as the universe ‘revolves’ or ‘works’ around a ‘mean’ or fundamental principle, so too do we. And this ‘mean’ is precisely that same harmonic principle (Plato is here building upon elements of the Pythagorean teaching) that makes us search and recognize – despite the constant disputes that suggest otherwise – for what is just, good, and beautiful.

One of the lessons that Plato is trying to teach his audience is that, just as this search (for truth, justice, knowledge, etc.), and its corresponding vision (like Er’s), can guide one to philosophical ascent (culminating in the philosopher-king archetype; i.e. someone wise and politically powerful enough to persuade people along the proper path), it can also cause one to ‘descend’ down the tyrannical path; i.e. the path measurably removed from the philosopher-king (Socrates gives us the number 729, which is Plato’s way of responding to those who insist on quantifying the unquantifiable, though still pointing towards the crux of what he is trying to illustrate; in this case, 729 is partly used to represent the numerical value of a human life in a year: approx. 364 days and 364 nights. Likewise, our lived life is located in the ‘mean’ between these two, even if we are only aware of our ‘waking’ life. In other words, we are a product of both our ‘waking’ and ‘sleeping’ state, what we see and what we don’t see, or as we would now say, our ‘conscious’ and ‘sub-conscious’.)

I know its premature to present conjectures at this stage, but what I saw in the trailer made me think of “the eternal struggle of the duality of man” motif, which goes back to Plato, but that is also present in most (if not all) of Nolan’s movies thus far. And since Nolan is an ‘artist’ using an ‘artistic’ medium, I felt like addressing this possible interpretation of the motivation of his latest work.

I would like to point out that Bats placed the kill switch in the hands of someone who very much disapproved of the what was going on and had the power to terminate the eaves-dropping after the Joker was apprehended. I know of no such system of (meaningful) checks and balances that was employed by the Bush Administration that was not simply acting as a "rubber stamp". As for the tactics of the Bush Administration, regardless of what they were, I would have preferred that they would have been open about what they were doing (no "secret prisons" etc), so that I at least have the opportunity to make up my own damn mind them.

Is the only thing i don't like in the movie. THE ONLY THING. Though he says one thing that made me chuckle, when he sees The Joker pull out a RPG and he asks "Is that a Bazooka?"Now, i might be very wrong about this, but i suspect that the fact the character calls that RPG a bazooka is a proof that the people who wrote the movie are english. It's quite commonfor people outside USA, including UK, to still call bazookas to any rocket lauchter type weaponry, while RPG seems to be the prefered designation. I might be wrong about this, but still, made me smile a bit.

    by thot

Too many obvious flaws. The Joker was awfully well prepared and planned ahead meticulously and then claimed to be winging it? Hmmm. Don't get it. The hospital thing was a bit daft as well. How the hell could he have pulled off wiring the whole place with explosives without tipping someone off? The Two Face debacle was one of the worst things. Tacked on at the end and way over-the-top. Gotham's 'White Knight' turning to the 'dark side' so quickly and easily? I enjoyed TDK but liked Batman Begins even more. Ledger's Joker was brilliant and steals the show. Poor Bats was once again relegated to second banana.

Asi will vouch that I am not a big TDK fan

    by continentalop

But I think the Joker being awfully well prepared and planned ahead wasn't a flaw, Thot. First off, he is an arch-criminal, a super-villain who possesses no powers; so what makes him such a dangerous foe? The fact that he thinks outside the box and can pull stuff off no one expects (something you see in his first appearance in the comics when he kills his victims despite the best efforts of the police).
Secondly, I don't think he plans everything perfectly - I think he has more than one plan and just doesn't care about the results. Either he kills Dent in the car chase or he gets arrested, either way he wins because he has got a backup plan. He had probably already planned to have Gordon or Batman rescue Dent - if they do great, if not so what? And if he survives and gets hurt, he probably figured what were the most likely hospitals and already wire them.
The guy is a nut who is dedicated to an insane ideology, so who knows how far he'll go or what he has planned? The guy plans for everything because he has no overall goals other than pushing Batman to the edge and proving that their is no point to the universe. The guy is the Zen master of insane killers.

    About the Joker in TDK...

    by shadow warrior

Did you guys not get it that he just had a lot of backup plans? If he failed in one plan, move on to the next. If he dies, so what? Also, he had help from the mobsters. He obviously didn't rig all those bombs himself. Of course he said he didn't have a plan and was just winging it, but don't you think, just maybe, the Joker lies too? He kills people for Christ's sake, you think he gets guilty about lying? He even had different stories about his facial scars. About Dent's 'sudden' turn to evil, Nolan showed it wasn't that sudden by showing his violent side while he interrogated the escaped Arkham inmate. It's always been in him, and the tragic events plus Joker's mind-fucking drove him over the edge.

    Continentalop said it

    by asimovlives

And let's be frank, in the end, The Joker plans fails. All his plan was to climax at the two thug boats incident, where The Joker would prove, once and for all, how worthles human beings are. and the human beings disproved him. In the end, what Lincoln called the angels of our better nature win out. The Joker's plan failed. But he took it like he takes everything, as a joke. With a person like him, he never loses, because everything is funny and everything is a joke. Well, except if you call him crazy. He doesn't like that.Continentalop said it when not all of the Joker's plans work out. but the man is full of Plan Bs, and he's a master of improvisation.OK, consider this scene: remember when Joker visits Dent at teh hospital,a nd where he converts Dent to the notion of chaos being the only justice firce in the universe? What does Dent does? He pulls his coin and tosses it, let chance say if the Joker goes free or as a corpse. And the Joker complies. Had the coin fall heads, the Joker would had got his brains blown out. The end to all his schemes. And he would still see it as a joke in his final second of life, i bet. But the point is, the joker's schemes are not perfect, they depend too much on unforceable chaotic events to happen. Which is the whole fucking point of the whole enterprise. An exercise in barely controlled chaos. And the movie designs and pulls this out brillantly.I guess this is one reason why some resent THE DARK KNIGHT. They might feel that the heroes are always two steps behind the villain, and that despiste their best efforts, the villain always gets what he wants, and at best the heros only mannage to do some minor dammage control, if any. I guess for some, the movie makes the heros look over their depth. They dislike this idea of the heros not being in control all or most of the time. Well, frankly, that's for me the best part of the movie. Because it makes the final victory so much more important, so much more well earned. And then, the movie pulls the rug out of our feet, and presents us with a phyrric victory, which for some is a complete no-no for their "entertaiment".I thank Christopher Nolan, his btotehr and all their collaborators for giving THE DARK KNIGHT as it is. Cinemawise it's one of the greatest cinematic gifts in the shape of a mass entertaiment film a movie lover could get. I thank all the lucky stars that this movie exist. It reminds me why i fell inlove with cinema in the first place.

Trailers are not exactly cheap to make, and they just put them out for a few hours? How in the fuck that even justifies the investment? Who are the assclowns who come up with this shit?

    Yes, the Dent hospital scene...

    by shadow warrior

is a good example of how Joker has different plans going on at once. The coin spared his life, but he managed to push Dent to insanity and let him loose on the city, making Gotham lose it's White Knight. The Joker had a 50% chance of getting his head blown off, and if that happened, Dent is a killer, probably still goes insane, and Gotham still loses its White Knight. Joker still wins even in death.

AsimovLives, I can find flaws in TDK

    by continentalop

I don't think it is a bad movie, but a very good movie. I just don't think it is a great movie, in the same sense that THE GODFATHER or CHINATOWN or SEVEN SAMURAI is.
What drives me nuts is that it is only a couple of things (most minor, a couple major) that just prevent me from ranking it higher. So I probably rag on TDK more than other movies because it is so infuriatingly close to being great but makes some huge missteps IMO (much like UNBREAKABLE - had the potential for greatness but missed it).
I'm just hoping Nolan does in the next movie what he has done so far - make the Batman series closer to what it can be each movie (TDK was a huge improvement in my opinion over BB).

If one of your complains is about the armured van guard that rides shotgun and keeps on moaning and comenting on the stuff happening, then i'll have to agree with you on that. another friend of mine who loves the movie as much as i do has the same complain. And that's it. That's my only complain about the movie, really. Other then that it's too short. But then again, i always complain that good movies are always too short. So, there you have it. And as such, yeah, i call TDK a great movie, without any irony. Hell, if some people, even with the knowledge of the inumerable flaws that such movies as Jar Jar Abram's SHIT TREK have and can still call it a good movie with a straight face, you bet i have absolutly no problems whatsoever in calling TDK a great movie with full conviction. Great it is.

and Batman Begins was pretty damn very good

    by asimovlives

It's not the best comic movie ever made because The Dark Knight exists.

Batman Begins was passable at best IMO

    by continentalop

Some good stuff, but lots of bad stuff (Ra's al Ghul's plot with the microwave gun, the train climax, Cillian Murphy as the Scarecrow, Katie Holmes as Rachel, etc). But I honestly believe that 80-90% of the bad stuff in BB was from Goyer.
In fact, 80-90% of the stuff I didn't like in TDK was usually stuff left over or established in BB, so once again I think Goyer might be the culprit. The further Nolan seems to move away from Goyer's influence, the better the franchise seems to get. I have hopes the third one will be the movie I am waiting for.

    As for TDK

    by continentalop

It wasn't the guy riding shotgun. Actually I thought he was ok - just a little harmless comic relief to help a very tense situation. The entire van-truck chase was my favorite part of the movie. In hindsight, I can only say that I wish Nolan went even further in making it a more obvious metaphor for what the US soldier's face in Iraq in their convoys.
My ONE complaint about the chase scene was Batman using those machine guns on his Batpod. What was Batman's backstop when he fired those? Bullets don't stop at glass, they keep traveling and he was shooting glass that led to halls in malls and where pedestrians where. Some people might say I am just nitpicking, but since I understand how guns work and how easy it is for a wild shot to kill someone I couldn't believe that Batman would be so callous to just use machine gun bullets to shatter glass.

Saw the Inception trailer in front of Sherlock.

Still one of the best trailers I've ever seen.
Really beautiful, bizarre, eerie, strange and exciting.

    AsimovLives

    by continentalop

First off, I haven't seen STINO so that is why I don't comment on it (Not really interested in seeing it, will check it out on cable). So I am not justifying STINO, I am not justifying people's right to like it. It might be a crappy made movie, but people had an emotional reactions to it, and that is what effected them. I can't get upset set at people for reacting to something I don't like, we all react differently.
If you've ever seen "A Personal Journey With Martin Scorsese Through American Movies" you'll know what I am talking about. Scorsese himself talks about how some of the films that have affected and influenced him the most have not always been "great" movies. Things like B-Westerns like SILVERLODE, Abbott and Costello comedies, melodramas by Douglas Sirk, and low-budget noirs and gangster films. So if Martin Scorsese is subseptible to being influenced by his emotions, who am I to criticize other people?
Plus i think many people "nit-pick" about TDK and BB begins is because they really care about that character and those films. A Michael Bay movie is just a mess, I could care less about them and they would need to be completely scrapped and reshoot to even became passible to me so why waste the effort criticizing them? But TDK got close but falls short IMO, so that makes it something I want to talk about and point out why it didn't work as well for me as others.

    BATMAN 3

    by nightmute

Actually, the thing that makes TDK so impressive is the fact that it reaches way beyond what a commercial studio movie needs to do. Dumbed down, but with some slick action directed by any journeyman, like Ratner, Bay or Nispel, it would still have made money. Nolan took a huge risk by making it thought-provoking, essentially making it a superhero Heat. Watch those movies back to back, and they look and feel exactly the same. It's as if Nolan was constantly using Heat for inspiration. Even the atmospheric use of music, with the haunting strings...very Mann. But it works brilliantly. I was a little confused when I first watched it, simply because I didn't expect it to be so intelligent! You have to keep thinking when watching it. As for Batman 3, presumably Wayne will put Batman on ice, and possibly hit the bottle. He should go down a dark route. I suspect that Reese will continue to be under police protection, but will be too afraid to reveal Batman's identity, now that Batman seems to have gone rogue. You just can't let the world know that Wayne is Batman, otherwise you kill the whole story. But maybe Gordon learns the truth. He's the one guy who would never reveal it, but who, along with Fox and Alfred, deserves to know. Reese will possibly be targeted by the criminal underworld, who want his info, which allows Nolan to bring a new villain in. Maybe Batman captures Reese, to protect him. I'd love to see Catwoman in this. A Nolan Catwoman would be badass. There's a lot of plot potential here. There has to be resolution, however, with Batman clearing his name and becoming a hero again. It would be cool to introduce the idea of Robin at the end, if only as a tease for the fourth film. And in Batman 4, kill Robin halfway through, to give Batman a revenge motive. It makes sense. People expect to see Robin, and Nolan dislikes the character. It would be seen as daring to kill the little bastard. Oh, and they should call the third film Gotham City.
