Traitorous Laurence Dominic Is Back For Friday’s Final Two DOLLHOUSEs Of The Decade!!

Published at:  Dec 18, 2009 1:07:19 AM CST

SPOILER ALERT !!

I am – Hercules!!

“Dollhouse” saw its last day of principal photography Wednesday. After tonight’s two-hour event, three new hours remain.

Will Victor rescue Sierra from those smarmy-looking fellows behind Dollhouse Dubai?

Tonight:

"Stop-Loss"/"The Attic"

As his contract with the Dollhouse expires, Victor is released back into the world, where his military past threatens his future with Sierra. Meanwhile, Echo is deemed too dangerous and is sent into her worst nightmare.

Guest Cast: Liza Lapira as Ivy; Michael Kin as Hagan; Reed Diamond as Laurence Dominic; Vincent Ventresca as Nolan Kinnard; Adam Godley as Clyde Randolph; Tzi Ma as Matsu; Keir Thirus as Myers.

Summer Glau returns as psychotic Dollhouse genius Bennett Halverson in the Jan. 8 and Jan. 15 episodes, titled “Getting Closer” and “The Hollow Men.”

On Jan. 22, "Dollhouse" airs its series finale, "Epitaph: Return," written by Maurissa Tancharoen, Jed Whedon and Andrew Chambliss, which revisits the apocalyptic scenario glimpsed in "Epitaph One." Those returning from earlier episodes include Alan Tudyk as Alpha, Felicia Day as Mag and Adair Tishler as Kid Caroline.

8 p.m. Friday. Fox.

    by hulk_beanpoll

Thanks Herc, for consistently ruining every episode of Dollhouse for every Dollhouse fan who frequents the main page of this site. I posted last week, asking for some consideration and I was ignored. It's either very careless or very rude to post casting spoilers where even people who choose NOT to click on the article will see them.

these decade idiots don't realize that the closest thing to the truth about the dumb argument has to do with second coming of Jesus and/or the end of the world, which is quite a stretch in its own right. From a pure calander standpoint, their argument makes no sense. what's funny is that they think they are so damn smart and 'in the know' (i've read someone say "most people don't realize that the decade blah blah blah") while the rest of us, armed only with common sense, laugh at their idiocy.

in the grand scheme of things. Then again, so is Boyd and Ballard. Okay...maybe not Ballard. But he tries. That is, before he was killed. Anyway, if Mr Dominic is back these episodes will rock. "It weaves through a lot of the history of the show in some sometimes exaggerated manners and gives us insight into characters we wouldn't normally be able to see. Playing throughout the episode is a subplot that turns out to be a game changer. By the end of the episode, the entire series will take a terrific turn."

    by v'shael

    Yeah, it's just a trend I don't like seeing

    by buffywrestling

If you have actors that get training & you have a stunt double that is the exact build, why not edit it so it looks somewhat plausible? Supernatural does that a lot with Sam & Dean and it irritates me every time. Just show me the boys fighting, okay? Yes, they're pretty but I don't need head shots all the friggin' time.

    Responses and Observations

    by jayemel

buffywrestling, that wasn't a Lady Gaga song. It was a clever sound-a-like.

shutupfanboy, this wasn't the season two finale. It was likely the season four finale. The last two episodes will be season five (E2 being a stand alone). Here's how I understand what we just saw:
    Perin plot = season two
Echo on the run learning to control herself = season three
Echo and company in the attic = season four

buffywrestling, Boyd's stuff at home is Whiskey. Good call.
I think the "fast forward" has hurt Adele's side the most. She's changed sides more than Lieberman on the healthcare vote. She was definitely meant to be the "gray" character of ther series.

    by jayemel

Her switches didn't have time to properly develop!

Also, the black suit guy was definitely meant to be the "big bad" for the first half of season four like The Beast was the "big bad" in the first half of season four of Angel.

It pisses me off that whedon had to get the pink slip to let the good shit out, and the cheeseman was GOLD. Three episodes left, OH and did you notice the play Adele made was taken exactly from Angel? Adelle. It may have started out that way but once she got him reconstructive surgery - the one that Whiskey refused & they listend to het, for some reason - you knew that it wasn't just a May/December romance on her part. This is what makes Adelle faninating. She bought into her own fantasy, willingly & knowingly - so much more than a customer just hiring a Doll.

No, Adele wasn't switching sides out of...

    by jayemel

...self preservation. Then I could believe her constant flipping. Rather, she was having an actual moral crisis. Her drunken stupor was the condensing of a long anguished arc of moral self torture on her part. Thus, to give her a fair treatment as a character, they needed more time.

In contrast, where this show suffered was trying to develop the dolls from apparent blank slate to Echo and the cognate of the Anthony/Priya relationship. The blank slates were incredibly difficult to identify with, but, since they rushed Echo's development, they could likewise rush the Anthony/Priya relationship. I'm beginning to think though that the series premiere should have been the "composite event" in Echo's mind.

I don't think she is switching sides out

    by buffywrestling

out of self-preservation per se but she is playing a game to give her more of an advantage. Her spot on top means a lot to her; it's almost everything. *Almost* I completely agree with you that the Drunk!Adelle is shorthand for moral dilemma but that shorthand has been there from the beginning.

I think in hindsight, we can say they should have fastforwarded this part, slowed down and developed that part but after episode 6 season 1, they were building blocks. It was just that they were all sub-text and not all that text-y. There were single lines - a passing quip! - that set up the scenario that we are seeing now.

I Suppose the Good & The Bad

    by dave i

The bad? Only three episodes left. The good news? The show seems to have found its voice and might have a strong conclusion that would otherwise perhaps not have happened if it had gone on too long. Also, I'm still wondering if perhaps some other network might buy this. Probably not. But given the right network and promotion I think it could grow into a cult classic type of show. Regardless, it also gives me one less reason to watch Fox. I watch House, otherwise I intentionally avoid shows they produce and movies they put out for sheer spite of the Fox network. At worst, I can think of this as a pretty good mini-series sort of thing that seems to have peaked at the end for a hopefully epic conclusion. The past couple of two-hour episodes have been very inspired.

The First Hour Of Dollhouse Was Embarrassing

    by media messiah

Last night's Dollhouse was poorly written, plotted, and paced. There is no excuse for it to have been that bad. I only saw the first hour of last night's showing, so I cannot judge the second episode, but clearly, no one involved with the show has a grasp of what the show is, or what it is supposed to be, from episode to episode, and from week to week--they are simply just throwing up darts in the dark, and hoping they hit something, anything?

I think a lot of people are getting on her acting and deservedly so. But with the Echo wiped doll character she really didn't have much to work with. When she was imprinted she was sometimes real good and sometimes real bad. I don't think she is the reason the show failed. Its sci fi on Friday night on fox. NM: I Could Follow The First Episode, Last Night

    by media messiah

However, it was loose, and a very messy episode. But what is most important about last night's episode's failure...dramatically, plot wise, or in the manner of character development, is this, why did we need to see any of it? Victor is released from the dollhouse and is kidnapped by his old military chums who could have kidnapped him by simply hiring him as a doll under some false guise as cliental...and then taken him, or by raiding the dollhouse itself, or the leader of the corporation that owns and runs the dollhuse could have simply ordered him turned over--instead they waited for him to be released from the dollhouse, and then kidnapped him? Again, this show alleges that these people signed-up to be dolls willingly, and then they, at the same time, act like they are prisoners or slaves? It is either one, or the other, and the show, especially last night's first episode, keeps negating and contradicting its own premise, often from scene to scene, and episode to episode? That, and--we keep seeing some of the dolls escape the dollhouse, only to be recaptured--it is like Groundhog Day? Every time you think this show is going somewhere and that Echo has escaped, bam, we go back to the starting gate again? Even worse, now the villains that are running the dollhouse know that Echo is a threat to their operation...and yet, they don't kill her, or try to? To add to that, the "super soldiers--with the group mind" concept was not executed in a manner that one could say was intriguing in any way--it just fell flat and played silly, and clumsy. This was just another filler episode. There was a lot of fat in the story. They should have still had Echo out on the street and on the run with the bad guys out to get her. Echo should have been on the outside working to take down the dollhouses...and the result of that adventure should have led her into the Attic episode. Last night's first episode, was sloppy thrown together...pedestrian writing, that which, at its heart, failed to advance the story--the very reason why I called it a filler episode. Even the use of Lady GaGa's music was wasted as it wasn't used to advance any portion of the plot. It just popped-up in the club scene, a scene that we didn't need to see in the first place, and was quickly cut off? You could remove the whole episode from the entire series run of Dollhouse...or the DVD set of the second season, which yet to come, and no one would even miss it. If the episode completely disappeared, it would not interrupt the story arc of the show whatsoever, and that is a real problem in regard to good vs. bad, writing!!!

    by nrn

Victor was signed up to the dollhouse and released from the dollhouse on his own recognizance. THEN another branch of the dollhouse with military contracts basically came and kidnapped him. At that point it turned from him being a free will doll to being a slavemind. And Pyera or whatever her real name is was his only link to his past life, he remembered her and he loved her. Thus he was able to break the connection. The episodes were rather obvious that Adele was pulling a coup. From the moment echo told her if she was going to stand with echo or stand with Rolsom. I knew she had decided Echo, otherwise when Echo had came to her with that ultimatum they would have immediately put her in the Attic. Adele loves her dolls and treats them with respect, unlike the other branches.

    by smackfu

was that why would Rossum go to the trouble of sending a commando squad into a civilian area and extract a man from his apartment hours after being released from the Dollhouse, when they could have just had him transferred last month, or 'hired' him and then just kept him. The counterpoint, is that Rossum probably doesn't want DeWitt's already meddlesome Dollhouse to know anything about their other projects, so they waited until he was free and abducted him. Also there seems to be a free will element, as the soldiers can resist the link, so they needed to make sure Victor was a willing participant. Which he certainly would not be if he knew Rossum was using him from the get go.

    by wtriker1701

That's waht I call clever storytelling AND ending eps on a dramatic high note. That's where peolpe wait for "to be continued". Granted, that should have been much earlier "on air" so there would probably not have been any cancelling. But - we have the opportunity to watch some great show (finally) - and we're given the chance to see its potential, that's only been touched by last season's Epitaph One. The Attic reminds well of Buffy's Restless, Angel's Final episode and Alias' last three episodes in season four. Very doomsday_ish... Great!

but I gave it a weekly chance. In my opinion it couldn't have lasted for more than one (full 22-24 eps). There would have been more of that filler episodes that don't lead anywhere or tease us to see some developing plot or arc. And that's where Dollhouse sometimes really bored. When I own my two DVD-Sets I'll certainly watch my favourite 6-8 episodes and the others will remain unrepeated experiences on that shiny little silver disks.

Christ I can't believe I'm writing this, Donald Bellisario - men who know how to build great TV casts. A great cast makes up like 70% of a show's success - this is why Journeyman, Trauma and Flash Forward are/were such dogs.

Sierra and Victor are miscast. Also, I really don't care for the actor who plays Ballard, even though he is a technically accurate and professional actor, he is just bland. Topher is annoying, but I am getting use to the actor playing him, still, I would have gone with somebody else. Eliza has just been horrible, and I have been a fan of her's for years, but she has been off from the moment I first saw early press clips of this show. The actress who plays Adele has been great, and the actress who played Ballard's girlfriend/doll...is also a stand-out and should have been central to the show, she would have made a great Sierra, and has great potential as an actor, she can really act!!! Amy has been awesome, as usual, and Summer also, they tower over most of the regular cast, but both deserved better roles, though each turned their parts into something special, or better than they should have been.Lastly, many of the guest stars on Dollhouse have been weak, from the guy who use to play Apollo on Galactica, to Alyson Hannigan's husband--they have lessened the show, not strengthened it.

Wtriker1701: The Scripts Haven't Helped The Actors Any

    by media messiah

Sometimes the actors are made to look really clumsy on the show. The scripts, more often than not, have been either just plain bad, or deeply uneven. They still haven't figured-out what this show is supposed to be, how it is supposed to feel, and what it is supposed to be about, and successfully conveyed that to themselves, as the creators of the show, and to the public who they are writing it for?Whedon and company are bogged down...and overwhelmed with the overall concept of the show. They forgot to write good drama, and good scenarios to place the characters in, and why. There is just a lot of techno-babble going on in the dialogue, and wild leaps of assumptions made in response to that techno-babble, story wise, and to hear Eliza recite it--that clumsy dialogue, is just awful. She sounds, and looks, like she doesn't believe it, so why should we?

Going back to the first episode

    by jocutus

The opening scene was Caroline being forced to sign up for a five year Dollhouse contract. The scene always seemed like it was written with vague allusions, like they were talking around a certain subject. I always figured they left it open because they hadn't really figured out her back story yet. Was Adele really trying to strike a deal with her to bring down Rossum from the start? I have to go back and watch that scene again. They always stressed the "Nothing is what it seems" line over and over.

    Media Messiah...and Dollhouse

    by thegoldbergv

You are so misguided and off-the-mark with your assessment of the show, its casting, actually EVERTHING you've said thus far on this TB has been the exact opposite of what I've thought, and it seems the opposite of most other people as well. For someone who aspires to become a writer, your opinion of what is 'good' in terms of TV seems to run contrary to almost every other person here. That may be a problem when you come to pitch your work. Could it be...perhaps...that we are right and it is you...pre-tell...who is mistaken????

As for Dollhouse itself, it was AWESOME again. Action packed, weird, some proper depth of character and of theme, its very Whedon and very good. I liked the obviously ADRed "who knows how long we've been off the air" line. Mr Dominic's return was cool, as was seeing real Victor and real Sierra. I have absolute faith that this show will have a satisfying conclusion. The problem for me with how Angel ended was they found out about the cancellation last-minute, and the finale has the feel of being thrown together using the bits of sub-plot they had lying around. I mean did anyone really think the red demon guy Angel plays racketball with would turn out to be a big villian? Not me anyway. But with Dollhouse they've just gone all out in this final season, they must have known way ahead of time that season 3 was never going to happen and as such they've really pushed it creatively. These last 3 weeks have been great TV. And was it the cheese man? Really?

About Victor: I Didn't Call Him A Bad Actor

    by media messiah

Clearly he is a classically trained actor, however, I called him boring. There is a difference between someone who you look at and say, "Now, that...is a super star waiting to happen!" and some one you say "He would be great playing terrorist number 2?" Well, he is terrorist number 2...kind of good, but nothing says star about him, and for someone to be featured that much on a show, you want them to show star like charisma. That is not to say he won't be known as a great character actor 10 years from now, in fact, I am sure he will be, but he just doesn't scream the word "star" when you watch him.

    Already bonded and actualized?

    by jayemel

They were not actual characters. They were Lockeian blank slate dolls. The episode actualized Anthony and Priya, and brought them to know and understand Echo. It was about teaching the characters something, giving them an arc where they grew, which is what really progresses plot.

The club scene established Anthony's connection to Priya even though he was no longer Victor. It was meant to show what was true about his personhood. It also served to establish what would pull him out of the military hive mind later in the episode. In other words, the scene was written to prevent the reason Anthony was removed from the military hive mind a dues ex machina. And that, MM, is an important and nuanced writing technique.

Are you going to shut up now, or do you want me to keep owning you over and over again on how to write well?

PS: As Far As My Taste In TV

    by media messiah

I love the original Twilight Zone, Two and Half Men, Buffy, Firefly, Alias, Legend of The Seeker, Star Blazers, King of Queens, the original Mission Impossible, The Big Band Theory, Old Christine, etc. Now, I'll say it again, as I have said for months, even Joss Whedon has stated that the writing has been off on Dollhouse, so I would say that my criticisms of the show have been mostly parallel to his. The only difference is that I think that some of the actors have been miscast. That doesn't mean they are bad actors, necessarily, it just means that they aren't sparking the fire that they should in their roll. I often say that Robert De Niro, although a great actor, wouldn't make a great Superman, and Meryl Streep would not make a good Xena: Warrior Princess or Buffy. My point? Not every actor, no matter how great, is meant for every role. As for the girl who plays Sierra, however, she strikes me as the type of actress that appears in some drugged-out haze wearing lingerie at the beginning of a Lethal Weapon film (in a non-speaking role) who is then pushed-off a hotel balcony from 20 floors up. She hits the roof of a car, end of scene...and no more acting roles.

    by nrn

If you don't remember in the last episode when they were "coupling"; Lundy (yeah I call him lundy lol) made a comment that they were going to move them to separate houses. What if the house Victor was intended to move to all along was the military course; maybe he was never really free and that was his moving.Either way, they couldn't have simply let victor walk away, just look at what happened when November tried to take everything public. Rolsom is not just into Dolls, their houses are into Military exploits, Assassinations, and generally having a control in the government. If you have ever played the game Assassins Creed II the parallels are very much the same; there is Rolsom, a corporation bent on shaping reality to they way they want it; then there is Echo and the Doll army, soon to be bent on stopping it.

    by wtriker1701

In fact they're perfect for their roles. Victor has been used as so many different characters and nailed them - comically and dramatically. The perfect doll. I mustassume, MM, that you didn't like Alyson Hannigan as well in the beginning. Her role seemed to be so geeky and hollow - just for the comic relief. And see wtaht happened after Buffy shifted gears? Yeah - totally awesome character, totally perfectly cast fpor the role. And I'm 100% with Eliza! She's hot AND has a lot of facets. And indeed I liked the Mellie actress Miracle Laurie, but she seemed to have the least acting abilities. But that's not a bad sign amongst such a powerful cast. Amy Acker and Alan Tudyk simply RULE! Also Reed Diamond showed his real capacities during "The Attic". Underused before... but I think, Dollhouse in its last week has become a rollercoaster for everything. Not exactly on par with Buffy, Angel and Firefly - but... there would have been real potential!

Miracle Laurie: She Is My Favorite

    by media messiah

She knows how to emote, unlike many on the show. If she shows grief, anger, love, joy--you name it, you feel that she is actually experiencing those feelings, and you gravitate to her. I don't get that from the guy who plays Victor or the girl that plays Sierra, the latter of which feels like a line reader, all technique, and no real acting. She just looks posed. The actor who plays Victor, on the other hand, technically, is very talented, but he does not convey emotion in terms of deep feeling...very well--it just comes off like, well...phony, or sacchrin. Give him a script, and I am sure he can memorize 5 pages of it and repeat it back, he is that good, but you feel no empathy for him, as he doesn't express emotion that you can feel and attach to??? I like actors who occupy their characters and embed themselves in those characters, seamlessly, where you can't detect acting--and they become the characters.About Miracle Laurie; any relation to Hugh Laurie?

Two and a Half Men? Legend of the Seeker? Alias? If you want to educate yourself on good TV do some The Wire, Deadwood, Mad Men, Battlestar Galactica, Lost, Rome, The Sopranos, Veronica Mars, hell even Fringe has its moments. All those I mention above excell in the type of nuanced, multi-layered writing that Dollhouse occasionally (and recently) employs so effectively. If you want standard good vs. evil and generic sitcoms then keep on the track you're on, but don't pretend that the lack of depth therein somehow indicates a greater quality of programming.

I just dont see why you like Miracle Laurie. I understand completely what your trying to say about the differences between acting technique and emoting, but...you can be techincally great AND emote. And, man, in my opinion, Miracle Laurie can't act OR emote. I thought she was the weakest thing on the show by far. The guy who plays Victor can act brilliantly, and more importantly, makes me feel for his character without over-emoting i.e. he doesn't need to cry or even look like he's on the verge of tears to show us he's sad etc. Subtle emotion, not over-emotion, is what is truly difficult to pull off, and separates the men from the boys.

I think they would need at least 5 episodes for the arc I have in my mind, but without a huge jump or small jumps in time, its going to take a hell of alot longer then 3 episodes for the world to end and shit to hit the fan. I mean Topher can't go from I'm a genius Topher to I'm CRAZY Topher over night.

Since FOX dropped the show, did the team change the plotline so that it finishes in a neat fashion? Or is the show just going to stop in Jan?

They were in production for ep 11 when the official word came through about cancellation, but from the look of the last few that have aired, the writing must have been on the wall from very early on. I can't imagine the story we're getting now is the same as they intended when season 3 was a possibility. Its for this reason that I reckon we'll get a proper resolution.

In this industry you never know who is who, and who is related to who--why and how. Dustin Hoffman has a family that is all one color, that being white, save for one son that is rarely seen, who is black. So, just because Hugh Laurie is from England doesn't mean he doesn't have a daughter or extended relatives who live, and were born in, America.

You're right on the 'who is related to who, why and how.' Of course, simply looking up something like that easily answers a question like that. From SyFy Wire: All The Things That I Told You That Were Wrong..

    by media messiah

...with Dollhouse, and that could have saved the show, if addressed, are the very same things that the staff at Syfy Wire appear to be in agreement with. You'll recall I was roundly attacked for my views of the show, and how it could be fixed, thngs that I pointed-out from the very beginning, even well before the show first aired. Now, for the Syfy interview. (see below):Syfy Wire7 ways Dollhouse could have been great

Summer Glau (left), with Fran Kranz and Eliza Dushku (on table)
The small audience that's continued watching Fox's Dollhouse since it got canceled this fall undoubtedly has noticed something: Now that it's canceled, it's gotten good!

Not perfect, mind you, but good. All the potential that was there in the beginning is being realized, and we have three episodes left with characters we're starting to care about headed to war with Rossum. AND a final episode that's called "Epitaph Two: Return."

Some familiar faces will be popping up before series' end, including Amy Acker as Dr. Saunders/Whiskey, Alan Tudyk as Alpha, Summer Glau as Bennett Halverson and "Epitaph One's" Felicia Day—and even Dushku's real-life boyfriend, Rick Fox, will play an Active on the Jan. 8 episode.

Taking the show in fascinating directions NOW is what makes Dollhouse so eminently disappointing, and it MAKES US CRAZY! If it was just a terrible show about a mindless Doll named Echo (Eliza Dushku) and her brainless imprints for various missions, we could have come to terms with that. And if it was just about a bunch of morally bankrupt characters working for a morally bankrupt corporation, OK. We'd tell creator Joss Whedon, "Let's put it behind us and move on. Go do something that's worthy of your genius."

But that's not what's happening, and we're kind of pissed. Others have noted this as well, and we've compiled their reactions with ours to come up with seven things that could have made Dollhouse great, along with one extra bonus thing. (And, Joss, we're disappointed you didn't figure these out before we did):

    1. After the pilot, Dollhouse should have skipped to "Bella Chose," the third episode of the second season, when Echo really gets her ability to access her personalities.

Yes, there were some great bits along the way, but the first season was slow, and Whedon did nothing but toy with what he promised us he was going to do ... which was make Echo aware.

Dan from Dan's Media Digest added, "It's interesting to me that Dollhouse has started becoming the show I imagined we'd be getting from the very start. When I first heard about Joss Whedon's idea, I imagined a scenario that would splice Joe 90 with The Pretender, but they instead went down the path of keeping Echo (Eliza Dushku) stuck in the Dollhouse being mind-wiped after every adventure. Thankfully, they've managed to spread their wings."

    2. Whedon is a brilliant writer and creator of TV shows, and he needs to stop compromising his vision.

"Shooting a new pilot was my idea," Whedon told Brian Ford Sullivan of The Futon Critic. "Because the network, they were looking for something specific. I thought I delivered it because they were very excited about the script. They weren't as excited about the show so we talked about why and why and why, and I figured out what they wanted. We talked about those things, and it was obvious they wanted more of an action feel than a noir feel. What I had done was very sort of dark and moody. And they wanted a show, a first episode, that absolutely laid out the structure of the show, which is—Echo is at the Dollhouse, she is imprinted for an engagement, she goes on the engagement, she comes back from the engagement into the Dollhouse. This is how it works."

    3. Trust the premise.

Blast Magazine's Kellen Rice commented: "The premise of Dollhouse is saturated with potential. This show has the scaffolding in place to explore issues just as deeply (and perhaps even more thoroughly) as Battlestar Galactica. The concepts of self, self vs. body, informed consent, identity, death, perception, ... all of these are fascinating topics that Dollhouse season one touched on and upon which season two will hopefully expand."

    4. Echo, with her ability to access different personalities, is a character that should have evolved early in the series and not at the end of it. Let's face it,

Eliza Dushku doesn't do dumb Doll well. Most any actress would have had trouble with this role, considering that her character was too often either childlike boring or schizophrenic, especially in season one.

IGN's Eric Goldman reviewed a recent episode where "Echo was in the mode that she (and Eliza Dushku) are served best by on this series—tough and ready to fight. We continue to get more insight into her fun ability to access all of her former imprints and their skill sets and how she can simply absorb a new one, Matrix style, and still be 'Echo.' This default Echo is not particularly nuanced. She can access the different personas, but she doesn't seem to act differently—just be able to do different cool things. But considering Echo has always been a crucial weak part of Dollhouse, I'm happy to accept Dushku back in her plausible tough-girl persona, with so little time left."

    5. We love Alan Tudyk. We're even still bitter that Whedon killed off Wash in Serenity. But Alpha should have been someone who scared us.

TheTVCritic.org had problems with Alpha, as well. "I think the biggest letdown was Alpha. Like so many television shows, we were given hints of something unique and gripping but what we got was generic. The idea of 40 personalities being awake inside a man's head leads to so many possibilities. The combination of knowledge, skills and awareness looked like it would create a superhuman in every sense. Someone who couldn't be beaten in a fight or an argument because they had too much knowledge to call upon. And of course what conclusion would such a creature draw about the human race, morality and their sense of self. In the end though Alpha was much more like all TV bad guys. He liked the sound of his own voice, he was obsessed with achieving unattainable goals and was undone by his own plan. In the end he put a gun to 'someone's' head, just like every desperate bad guy, it felt like a real let down."

    6. While we understand storywise why Paul Ballard ended up in the Dollhouse in season two, Paul should have been inside the Dollhouse to start with.

Having him join the Dollhouse later did not serve Tahmoh Penikett's character or the show.

Fandomania's Paige MacGregor commented, "I'm a little miffed with Mr. Paul Ballard. He is so passionate about shutting down the Dollhouse and saving the men and women 'trapped' there; however, he continues to allow Echo to experience a number of very disturbing side effects involving her memory wipes and engagements. Of all people, Ballard has a first-hand view of what the Dollhouse is capable of and the new advancements that Topher is making with 'programming' the brain (and now the body as well), yet he hides the fact that Echo remembers parts of her engagements from the only people who might be able to determine if these 'glitches' are the result of or are causing any long-term damage to Echo's brain."

P.S. Not to mention letting Echo be prostituted out on a continual basis.

    7. Fox should have aired Epitaph One at the end of last season.

It would have been a game-changer, but we know Whedon would have made it work.

And 7 1/2 Go back to The CW, Joss, or move on to cable. We mean it. At least they'd appreciate you. Don't ever make another series for Fox again.

Paste Magazine's Tim Regan-Porter wrote, "The DVDs were a revelation. The unaired 13th episode, 'Epitaph One' with Felicia Day and set 10 years in the future, was sci-fi magic. And the unaired pilot showed what could have been. Even without the behind-the-scenes featurettes and commentary that explicitly call out Fox's interference, it's obvious just from watching those episodes and the show's evolution that ham-fisted executives screwed the pooch. They wanted sexed-up action-adventure confined to single-episode stories, killing what was most intriguing about this and all of Whedon's shows: the through-line, the meta. Whedon says he was six episodes in by the time he got one that he was happy with."

    8. And then there's "Acceptance."

We admit we've been going through the five stages of grief since our journey with Dollhouse began. Denial: that the series wasn't better to begin with and now it's ending when it's just starting to find its way. Anger at Fox ... who else? Bargaining: that maybe somebody will pay attention to our letters and maybe someone else will pick up Dollhouse and give it a chance! Depression: well, let's face it. Rooting for a Joss Whedon show is like rooting for the Chicago Cubs. It's the agony and the ecstasy of the journey, and in the end, you're just not going to win.

And finally Acceptance. Beyond all things Fox and missed story opportunities and poor ratings and angst, we can now sit back and enjoy the last three hours of Dollhouse. How cool is that?

Are you ready for the end of Dollhouse?

the word 'Alias' is not mentioned AT ALL in that article so therefore your recommendations have not been vindicated. Nice try tho :(

Honestly, I really don't see what all the fuss is about with how Dollhouse is apparently 'flawed'. For me, there is only ONE episode in the whole run that has been an out-and-out stinker, and that was the backing singer one. The blind girl cult one was a bit naff as well I admit. Other than those though I think the series holds up pretty well. Of all the problems with Dollhouse, the 2 that for me caused its eventual cancellation were a.)the time slot and retarded US ratings system, and b.)the fact they had to re-shoot the pilot. If Dollhouse had been on Tuesdays, and its original pilot had aired, I reckon we'd all be looking forward to season 3 right about now.

    Goldberg: You Are Being Disingenuous

    by media messiah

As I stated over many months, almost a year now...through this very date, (something you are well aware of), Dollhouse was lacking a strong lead in Echo, as she was diminished by having no consistent persona for audiences to route for or relate to, as someone who is charting her own destiny. Echo was merely an adult with a mental aptitude of 5 years of age, with no real identity--every episode...for the first season, save for Epitaph One? In my argument, I stressed that for audiences to better bond with the character, that she must have a largely stationary base personality that audiences could get to know, and watch evolve, as a mature adult, from mission to mission...as well as in-between missions, from episode to episode...as audiences can't invest emotionally in a walking/talking human vegetable will no will or freedom of thought, or intent, at least, not fully. Echo had to be made heroic, and consistent in persona, and without that, I argued, the show would surely faulter. To that end, I constantly urged fast change be made in that direction...for Echo, and for the other dolls, who are series regulars. I urged Whedon to add a romance for Echo and Ballard, something central to the human experience that draws in audiences, emotionally, i.e. Buffy and Angel, or you might recognize the great importance of such plot points in the form of the relationship between Jake and Neytiri...from Avatar, it helped invest the audience in two characters whom they just met, and to care about them, and their greater cause.Further, in respect to Dollhouse, I also urged the creators of the show to create a standard...protagonist and antagonist conflict in order to enrich the drama within the show, and to strengthen the plotting in order to give our female hero an objective, a course to travel and a challenge to triumph over (The Hero's Journey), and a foe to rail against, one which she and her heroics could be measured by, and against. That is classic drama writing, something that I rallied for in respect to this show, and something I was roundly criticized for stating by fellow posters, here. However, now that such drama points have been instituted in the show, the very same things that the SYFY Wire article has specifically noted, as you can see by measure of popular responses, this change has fans and critics alike, cheering--changes that came about 19 episodes too late. Again, these are changes that I suggested almost a year ago--but was shouted down and assailed by other posters for daring to offer advice to Mr. Whedon and his writing staff. Well, the SYFY article, is parallel to my views, as I said, and thus, it helps to prove my case, that I was right, all along!

    PS: In Regard To Alias

    by media messiah

As you, and others here have said, and even I promoted, the story outline that I wrote and pitched as a would-be reboot for Dollhouse, one that was unsolicited...BTW, it was somewhat reminiscent of Alias, and to that, I say, yes--as much as Dollhouse is reminiscent of Joe-90, and for me, that is a compliment. The point of my pitch was to show, by example, that the series, Dollhouse, would be best served as a procedural series. The procedural format, would help advance the series characters and provide them, the show's writers, with a stable platform to launch each story from, while allowing the characters to evolve. With that is mind, I advocated the view that the series creators could easily adopt a format similar to Alias or Charlie's Angels (the original TV series)...or a format much in the style of Bones, Criminal Minds, or CSI...where we would find Echo/Caroline...and several other Dolls willingly working for a government agency, helping them to solve crimes--when, and where, they, the agency, can't get the job done by normal means. Echo and her fellow Dolls would retain their conscious minds (identities) from mission to mission, but could still be imprinted with special skills, i.e., the mastery of a languages, an accent, mathematics, computer science, or computer skills, etc., whatever unique skill is needed, per engagement. Why am I bringing this up? To answer your question about my outline which was similar to Alias. As I'll point-out to you, (see my post above), I made numerous criticisms--point for point, on how Dollhouse could be fixed and improved in the form of proper character development, and by following certain rules of dramatic writing, like having a classic protagonist/antagonist driven conflict, romance between the leads, and my view that the character of Echo, and the other Dolls, should have continued... stationary personas, that are mature and adult, which the viewers can get to know each week, and watch them grow and change within the frame of the story. Although Whedon and company did not adopt the procedural format that I suggested they should, they did, however, make the other changes that I suggested, either by way of coincidence, or the logical point of story accension (that being the end game, or climax of a story), or, perhaps someone at Mutant Enemy finally wised-up and listened to what I was advocating. Which of these 3 possibilities it is, I don't care, or know, however, my point is that they are now doing it, in-line with my views, and I called it right...well in advance of them doing so, by almost a year, and it is these points of change that the fans and critics of the show are now raving about--all points, that when I suggested them, I was constantly attacked for doing so--the rich irony...of all of this?

    Reply to Talkback

  • Dec 25, 2009 3:46:45 AM CST

    PS 2:

    by media messiah

Lastly, I came-up with my outline to largely solve the show's problem with its own identity, one that even the network was/is having trouble trying to describe...as far as what the show is about--the same with its actors, its creator, and the fans and critics of the show--the latter, being of the pro and con. That only hurt ratings, chased away audiences, and failed to attract new viewers. My efforts were designed to streamline the concept, and to get the characters out there...moving, and evolving, while simplifying matters by cutting-out the fat in the show--meaning, all the rich white men looking to hre high class prostitutes...almost every episode, all the techno-babble, and the numerous explanations of why the Dollhouse is, and why it isn't, and all the endless questions about the real point of it all, if any. The show's ultimate failing is found in the fact that it seemed to have no real aim, point-of-view, or direction, nor did its lead character, that being Echo, who had no set personality to either rage about, and fight her circumstances, or to express a confirmed approval of them--and that left audiences cold. Without a definable hero to fuel the show...for fans to root for, and a nemesis, for that hero to be tested by, and for fans to root against, it, the show, just drifted like a starship in the vacuum of space, running on empty. These are the points that I had hoped would be addressed, if the show was to be saved--but they were addressed...almost a year too late? The curiousity of it all, when the flaws were so obvious, and could have been easily solved.
