Boris Kodjoe (“Surrogates,” Showtime’s “Soul Food”) will play male lead Steven Bloom. Gerald McRaney (“Jericho,” “Red Tails”) will play his boss.

    ANOTHER JJ Abrams show?

    by dvader

This guy is pissing me the fuck off the way he "creates" a show and leaves it for something else. Though perhaps that's a good thing, bc I prefer Damon and Carlton on LOST over him .

    Why no white chick?

    by dukeroberts

I would like to see a major network make a ballsy move like that. I cannot think of any lead characters on any show that was a mixed race (black/white) couple. What's the hold up? Personally, I'd like to see a lead white male character with a hot, black lead female character. It's much rarer and (from personal experience) fun.

    by v'shael

That's one too many blatant rip-offs / trips back to the well for me. That well is fucking dry man.

Get a new idea. One that doesn't involve a Sydney Bristow CIA clone. If you've still got a hard on for that type of character, make her chief of security on the next Trek movie or something.

    by spyguy

Gjokaj is one of the few people on DOLLHOUSE capable of actually acting. And not just in one role, because the guy seems to be able to take on any character type he's given. Just imagine how this show could've been different if Victor was the lead character instead.

    by jaym3

Dollhouse doesn't need lead characters, though. It needed an ensemble to survive and its at its best when it does that. Echo isn't as special as Buffy, Angel or Mal. They were one-offs, in the whole world. Echo is just glitchy. Glitchy isn't special

    by jaym3

I kinda like JJ, but the guy is so flippant with what he does and Chuck is all the spy-comedy I need. I don't really like the spy-genre and I hate it when JJ messes with it. It's the reason Star Trek was above-average and MI3 was below. I'd rather see him working on Felicity again for fucks sake. It was a pretty terrible show, but I'm bored of spies.

    by bob cryptonight

The X-Files was NEVER as well thought out or imaginative as Fringe. I loved The X-Files, but it was often very convoluted, and Scully's character often functioned as a mere plot device. She went from being a strong female character to being an idiot within the span of one season.

    Reply to Talkback

  • She was supposed to be the voice of reason and scientific method, to offset Mulder's "I want to believe" mentality.Initially that worked, and her rationality fit--but over the seasons, with all that she had seen, her dismissive attitude and denial just wasn't plausible. The history of science is clear on the point that things DID exist which could not be measured by the instruments of the time, or explained by the knowledge of the time.Seeing things again and again that cannot be explained should have led her to admit that her science was insufficient to the task, and she could have sought to improve the science.Instead, her character was largely wasted near the end with cardboard cutout arguing against everything as a matter of doctrine. Lame tension, there.I liked the xfiles a lot, a fan, but she could have been better written as time passed.

But by the middle of the first season was very good, and great by the end. Makes me sad thinking what a wasted opportunity most of the X-files was. That should was mostly good, and could have been great.

i have a feeling the wife will be asian. depending on what network picks the show up it'll either be a black woman or asian woman. it's the "typical" television pairing of a black lead. it's sad, but networks seem to be really afraid of casting mixed race couples especially major networks. unless it's a white guy with various women of diff races, and that's usually for an episode or two anyway...

    Racial Casting

    by hipshot

Hispanic would be safest for the wife. And anyone who still thinks it's "Hollywood" or "The Network" isn't paying attention. It's America, or more specifically, it's human nature: males of one tribe twitch when they watch males of another tribe boff their females. Blaming "Hollywood" is just another way of remaining asleep to the real issues.

    Interesting comments

1)Kenny38606, something tells me if JJ’s first casting decision was a black female lead and the husband had yet to be chosen, you wouldn’t be putting out any suggestions to limit casting choices to non-white males only.

2)DarthMrBelvedere, I have questions about Kudjo’s acting chops as well. But since I don’t think Hollywood is at a point I which it would give a lead role to a TV series to an actor who was both black and a bad performer, I’m going to assume (hope) he has improved his craft and knocked it out of the park during the audition. That being said your suggestion that Michael Vartan is some great thespian is laughable at best.

3)Hipshot, your point about males of different tribes being uncomfortable seeing their women sleep with men of other tribes is probably accurate to some extent. And yes one can’t just blame Hollywood for that. But Hollywood seems to only like showing white guys getting all the action. Love scenes, when it comes to men, is almost exclusively a white man’s gig when it comes to Hollywood films. Yes, the majority of the women on screen they make love to are white as well but they will get their share of non-white conquests to. But the biggest white female stars are rarely going to be paired with a non-white guy in a romantic comedy, a drama or a big budget action flick. Asian women are always paired with white men in Hollywood. And the biggest black female starts will typically have careers in which they have more white onscreen love interests than black love interests. Something tells me however if the biggest white female stars were constantly being paired with non-white males studios would be getting endless death threats. So essentially all non-white males have become very use to seeing their women hookup with white male stars on the big screen and have dealt with it with maturity for the most part. Its only the white male that has constantly had his ego stroked by being the exclusive conquer of all women of different nationalities on screen. How fragile of an ego must that be if this one-sided representation of interracial pairing must be reinforced by Hollywood?

4)CrashPanda, good job of getting it right.

My point is that Hollywood is just following the money. They are actually, on average, a little less bigoted than the average American (Southern California being outrageously diverse), but still human. Black male sex in movies cuts the box office. As I've said before, to this day there still is only one 100-million plus film where a non-white male has ever had a love scene: "Crouching Tiger." That's it. The change will come when America gets browner, and more of the older generation die off. Not before.
