THE CREATURE FROM THE BLACK LAGOON Remake Has A New Director Now!!
Merrick here...
The revolving door of directors attached to Universal's CREATURE FROM THE BLACK LAGOON remake has come to a stop, for the moment at least.
For a while SAHARA's Breck Esiner was attached to this, but he moved on to the forthcoming remake of George Romero's THE CRAZIES. So who's looking to resurrect that iguanic son-of-a-bitch now? Carl Rinsch.
As for "Black Lagoon," it wouldn't be the first time the sea-monster movie was brought back to life. Universal has tried several times over the past three decades, with everyone from John Landis to Peter Jackson contemplating a stab. (Jackson chose "King Kong" instead. Hey, you can't be right all the time.)
...says The L.A. Times HERE.
We recently learned that Rinsch will also direct 47 RONIN, a Keanu Reeves Samurai tale (details HERE). Carl was, at one point, announced as director of the next ALIEN film - but his involvement with that project seems to have dissipated of late (word is Ridley Scott may take that one, although there've been indications to the contrary as well).
You can find samples of Rinsch's most excellent commercial work HERE.

Me thinks so!
-
...samurai movie I've ever watched. So naturally, it ought to be remade with Keneau Reeves!
-
This movie has been in development about as long as this site has been online!
-
...that came up with this one?
-
Black Lagoon has some potential. But ultimately, it's man-sized fish Kong. Even if they add dinosaurs to match the prehistoric living fossil thing, it's still only coming up to Kong. If they added a whole surviving race of Gill-men, _then_ it might start approaching even PJ's remake of Kong. (Especially with Gill-women. {g}) But then the long-rumored Kong prequel will come out, and so much for that distinction.
-
Guillermo Del Toro, John Carpenter, Chris Columbus, and my favorite James Cameron!
-
It was too long and overblown and would have benefited from 45 min. - 1 hour of cuts. Longer does not always equal better. PJ needs to learn that.
-
..and everything else nowadays is...Actually underwater footage in 3D is pretty cool.
-

They should have let John Carpenter go ahead with his version
by jettl93
his script was in a word...AMAZING. Much darker and more of a horror film then i'm assuming this one will be. Early word isthat this will be an action adventure more akin to a the mummy reboots instead of a horror alien type film
-
From the original universal monsters, he was my favorite. I don't know why. I love them all, but for some reason I became especially attached to Gill Man. I also feel its the one film from the bunch that could use a great remake the most. I hope they show some restraint on this and don't go for non stop explosions and kung fu action, and they go practical wherever possible in lieu of cgi. Wishful thinking, Im sure.
-
he just does what Fran & Philippa tell him. Nice doggy; arf, arf, arf!

Dear Lord, protect my childhood from the sins of Hollywood.
by 2for2true
Don't let'em "wolfman" this classic..
-
I'd pay to see that. A straight-up remake, not so much.
-
he admits he should have held off for perhaps an extra year before tackling it, he was still exhausted from the LOTR films, but it was offered to him and it had been a dream project so he took it. Now its not a bad film but it is an overbloated film that probabaly could have use a rewrite (we did write several drafts though, my original; first draft clocked the film at 3 hours and 48 minutes). Jackson is still proud of the film but he does admit his heart wasn't in it as much as he would have liked it to be
-
If they go for big action set pieces..Lagoon should be more of a suspense/horror film. Come to think of it, Anaconda was not far off in its execution.
-
since I care about that way more than a Black Lagoon movie, which is almost certainly gonna be ridiculous cgi and unnecessary gore.Hey I know, how about we get Platinum Dunes to produce it, then the circle of shittiness will be complete.
-
I can't decide if you're a comic genius or a sad, deprived attention whore.
-
"sad, deprived attention whores"
But I wouldn't say he's a comic genius. -
...I'm just saying that the remake of The Crazies that Merrick says he left to do instead is already done since it, you know, comes out in about 60 days and has a trailer and stuff. I think he could've squeezed both in to his schedule.
-
especially since he really tries to sell it to us. Sad.
-
...I couldn't agree with you more. The appeal of the creature is that it was (in the first two movies anyway, and most expecially in the first) a truly alien force. Not evil, it was simply other directed, and there was a purity to its motives compared to those of the humans with which it came in contact. And any comparison to Kong misses the point of...well really I think both movies. The original creature rests firmly in the horror realm of "there are some things man was not meant to know (conquer)". I also always wanted to see the Carpenter remake get done (even though he wanted to change the creature into a sort of mini-dinosaur and I'll always believe the creature should look more or less at it does, any unearthly mirror of humanity). Yeah, I could go on and on about the original. I hope the remake isn't entirely dreadful.
-
Thank you Disney for allowing this homo to have a career.
-
...no one seems to remember this.

-

Why the hell would anyone compare this with Kong???
by nomoredirtyjokespleaseweareyanks
The Creature is completely different.
-
this is a classic that really doesn't stand to be improved by a modern day remake. It worked in it's time and place -- but largely BECAUSE OF it's time and place. And you can't go home again.Of course, Hollywood will never, never understand that.
-
Don't remake the original, don't call it "Creature from the Black Lagoon." A badass aquatic horror movie should sell itself if done right.
-
and a hard 'R' rating. Though, I wouldn't want to do a special-effects monster movie after 'Avatar' unless the Creature learns to perform Shakespeare out on the open water.
-

I swear I just read something about this a couple of months ago.
by revenge_of_fett
With a different director and the creature had been severly redesigned and had a long, flat alligator tail. I remember thinking how retarded that was.How goddamn difficult is it to remake this movie? Yes the original is a classic, but I can imagine a version that is much scarier and creepier and believable. The original suit design is genious. The working gills are still amazing. I can see a slight updating, but not much is needed. Come on Universal, get this shit DONE!
-
No one will openly admit to being that old.
-
...GI Joe? cuz that movie sucked! worst movie I paid to see wit my favorite actor in it (JGL)...
-
...on a monkey, IF they use a man-in-a-suit. A little CG enhancement would be okay. But if they go all-digital on the Creature, it will suck donkey dick. Which means, likely, this will suck donkey dick... *sigh* Which is too bad because the last time I saw the original, I did think it was kind of hokey. (Purists can start the egg-throwing in 3... 2... 1...)

Right, Gramps? Hello?
ZZZzzzzZZzzzzzZzzzz... -
That's what it looks like. I mean, we are talking about, what, the biggest movie ever? Every godammed movie site already posted their reviews except for this one. You'd think that since Harry keeps "getting off the phone" with Jim and Avatar just hours away this site's crew would have their reviews up already.
-
Harry said he would
-
How much longer are you guys going to argue about that movie? We get it, it was too long for you, it tanked at the box office (according to your North American view point) and the bronto stampede looked like shit. "Gooood for yoooou!" - Christian Bale rant.
-
What the fuck is this shit? Last Samurai 2?
-
-The film still takes place in the amazon, but an american company has been dumping chemicles into the water, Gil man isnot a natural phenomenon but i mutated monster
-gillman is not the only mutant, there is a scene with a walking shark who also has arms and fish that can shoot sharpened gils
- The story is set in modern times, a significant plot point involves the team tracking gil man through GPS satelittes
- I can't find word on whether Gil man will be a costume or CGI, but the script mentions him being 7 feet tall so i can't see why a costumed stunt man can't play him.
-Universal is looking for both an established older actor as well as a new commer male and female lead. rumour has it that Danny glover is said to be close to signing for the "disgruntled old captain" role
-There is a slight refernce to the event of both the mummy films and the upcoming wolfman film, meaning universal is trying to tie together their current slate of monster movies into the same world
More info when i get it -
I don't know enough about this guy to pass judgment, so I won't. Fincher came out of commercials and he's distinguished himself since then tremendously. But notice how the era of the auteur has declined? We don't have a current stable of Coppolas, Scorseses or DePalmas. The industry (and the craft) has changed.
-
with leading lady.
-
I have been waiting for this remake since back when it was joked about in the very early 90's. My favorite Universal horror movie out there. If the remake sucks, I'll be smart enough to not watch it again and just stick with the original, ergo my "Childhood won't be raped".
-
With this guy from Uruguay getting a million dollar deal and Sam Raimi as a producer on the back of his short movie "Panic Attack!", which was essentially a VFX demo reel aping Michael Bay shots, it seems the era of finding directors who can tell a story is long gone. Now, it's about finding a "shooter", someone to get it into the can with as little irritance to the studio as possible.
-
Not Paul Suck Anderson? No? Who then?? What great, visionary Cameron-caliber director did they choose..? Oh. Oh. WHO?
-
One of the only Universal Movie Monsters that actually deserves to me remade.
-
it'll suck.
-
Otherwise Al Sharpton will picket.
-
Where are the Avatar reviews? I know there are dozens of reviews of the movie out there, but I want to know what the AICN crew thinks. It's not like there's so much other stuff going up on the site that they haven't had time to write them...
-
Cool name. That is by far my favorite episode of MST3K. I put Tim up front to absorb the hail of bullets". Classic.
-
a remake of the original Universal Monsters Mummy film?
-
Last i talked with Harry he told us not to post any until wednesday. They are coming but apparently legally we are not allowed to post them until wednesday
-
very little from the original 30's movies was used, the name Ardeth bay was actually the name of the mummy, in the remakes it is the name of the the majdah guard. Plus the 30's films were staright up horror movies where as steven summers' film are more action adventure films
-
I seriously want to know?
-
it's a very odd question to ask
-
I can understanding you not wanting to break an embargo. I'll be checking the site tonight at 12:01 a.m. :)
-
...will be how this decade is defined. I mean, did you READ the line in the story here-- "The BLACK LAGOON was going to be remade by Jackson, who instead decided to remake KING KONG, and so they got this guy Esiner who was going to remake LAGOON, but decided instead to remake THE CRAZIES...REMAKES, REMAKES, REMAAAAAAAKES! I think this site might be someday be renamed Ain't It Remake News, and through no fault of their own. That seems to be the only news that Hollywood is putting out. Check out the other stories on the site--ROBIN HOOD, THE BOX, CLASH OF THE TITANS, FANTASTIC VOYAGE, on and on and on and on...I used to think that people who said the days of originality in Hollywood are over were just cynical, but now I'm starting to wonder.
-
I here you man, but at least you got underrated non-mainstream films that are still very good coming out.
-
We friggin' get it already.
-
Because you claim to have worked with just about everyone in Hollywood, so I'm curious how old you are.
-
He's obviously talking way out of his ass but why? It's almost like he's been assigned to do this, maybe by another site, i think. I smell a hidden agenda behind the massive pile of bullshit.
-
still no Clash trailer thread
-
...admitted he doesnt work in Hollywood in some TB...his shtick was original at first, but then he admitted he was a fraud, now he back to his fradulent ways...make up your mind kid or sir or gal or whoever...btw, can I get a part in the next Batman? that guy Wendys got to be in it...
-
but he had to very politely turn them down. He likes writing and creating the stories behind the scenes (and getting teabagged by top tier directors).

I will never understand the King Kong hate
by danielplainviewonvacationinboston
As an enormous fan of the original, I can honestly say that I love Jackson's Kong. ESPECIALLY the first hour and a half or so. It only slows down a bit in New York, to me.
-
i don't mind coming hjere and droping spoilers and scoops but if i leave to many clues then top people will find out who i am. and i don't have an act or a shtick i'm just a real guy that got lucky, and sue me for wanting to give a little of that back. and no i haven't been sent here by another site or hired by this site to create talkback buzz..geez thats ridiculous for so many reasons
-
But just know that no one believes you, especially after your "inside scoop" on the new Star Wars movies the other day. That rumor was completely discounted, and only an idiot would believe that Lucas would want Fisher and Hamill back for more movies.
-
was it now?
-
...admittin that you dont work in Hollywood but yet post comments sayin you work in Hollywood is a shtick...just like my shtick is usin too many ellipsises...
-
with Morgan Freeman as the Principal.
-
Too right. Maybe we'll get lucky and the revolving door will keep going and they'll never really get it off the ground, finally deciding instead to do something else. Something ... dare I utter it? "Original."
-
...and remake Humanoids from the Deep instead.
-
my posts about not being in hollywood was sarcasm it was done in jest as a way of mocking those who think i'm not the real deal...apparently it didn't come across like i had intended. People who run this site know who i am, i was even offered a black box but i felt that was too much attention so i declined, i prefer to mingle among the masses and not draw attenmtion to my posts
-
Man, these L.A. critics are tough... $550 mil. worldwide in theaters, and generally strong reviews, and Jackson's KONG is now considered a relative "failure" by these guys (and perhaps the industry)?? OK, there's quite a bit of character jibber-jabbing in the middle of the film that is needless and perhaps perfunctory -- but the Kong stuff? Amazing. That confrontation on the rocks/cave by the water? The climax atop the skyscraper with Watts? The visual effects work, cinematography alone, and Watts' performance, are top-notch in this film -- some really beautiful stuff here. This is no Superdud Returns, here, people... Compared to things like Bayformers II, Jackson's KONG is rather genius, I'd argue. Hell, compared to many things, much of KONG is genius...
-
When I was 6 my dad bought all of the universal monsters series black & white vhs tapes, and although I loved them all I would watch creature from the black lagoon continuously. I have the dvd and still watch it on a good rotation. There is no way they will not fuck this up. And I will do what talk-backers do best: bitch like there is no tomorrow. I mean really, this is a horrible idea.
Also, I liked PJs Kong, but that was not a film I had as a child, and didn't see the original until my late teen years, so I had no expectations. -
I question your motivations... and your sanity.
-
You do realize that no one here believes you and that your "scoops" are falling on deaf ears, right? You must see this.

What the fuck are people thinking?

I can't argue with that. It is. I mean, him and the Avatar haters are better than any reality TV I've ever seen but Jesus, enough's enough. I had to say something. He's gone from entertaining to downright annoying.

and he passed on this so now we are fucked.

Never remake Black Lagoon. That's ALOT of peoples' favorite Universal monster. Jack Arnold made real science fiction movies in the 50's. He was way ahead of his time. Check out The Monolith Monsters sometime (he's credited with the story). Besides, I can't imagine a Black Lagoon film without the priceless Jack Arnold misogeny.
-
Creature from the Black Lagoon is interesting?
I'm looking forward to this like I'm looking forward to the next transformers movie or the next Terminator movie..
-
Yeah. It walked around a lot with it's mouth open. SCARY. The Murlock Kings from Fallout 3 were scarier.
-
...meh. Maybe. I'd like to see what they do with a reboot, how they could imagine Mr. Lobster Face.
-
I agree. There are a lot of set pieces that work beautifully. The opening alone picturing depression era New York, with the huge cityscapes, is visually impressive.
-
Why was Simon West replaced on "The Time Machine"?
-
You can put that on your first book's dustcover.

Are people really hating on CFTBL? You don't like movies.
by the green gargantua
this board is young.
-
I have a French CFTBL reprint poster signed by Ben Chapman. The Creech is iconic. It's just not very scary. Even the fish wouldn't be scared of him because he's too slow to catch them. The Creech in the remake would have to look like it could actually catch fish, to say nothing of menacing humans.
-
Peter Benchley's Creature. There's an example of a cool-looking creature design that was executed poorly. Most of the time the shark-man-dude just stood there looking stoned. Occasionally they'd jerk the camera around to make it look like the shark-dude was moving but it never looked like anything more than a nicely sculpted hunk of rubbery rubber. Crap movie.
-
Remake is a game-changer, then.
-
In the end it wasn't the masterpiece people expected, but it's not a terrible movie, a bit too longwinded, but not over all unwatchable. Hell, I even managed to feel for Kong in the end and that was surprising.
-
...that no directors want to touch. It doesn't bode well.
-
way way too long. each and every sequence could have been cut probably in half. if so it would have been much better. would have liked to see universals 1976 unfilmed version done perhaps. don't worry I'm sure some asshole will do it again before you can say short attention span.

THE LAST SCRIPT I SAW: HAD A TAIL and CHANGED ORIGIN
by the green gargantua
The Creech was a mutant from chemicals. Not unlike the beasty form the 1979 film, "Prophecy". A the new design has a tail. I hope, no I PRAY to fucking Dagon that with a new director that this bullshit is dropped. The reason to remake this movie is to make the Creature scary as hell.

Grab the girl in mid air and disappear. Kind of like great white sharks were revealed to do in that Shark special that blew everyones minds a few years ago. As for his re-imagining they should hire Wayne Barlow.
