LORD OF THE RINGS Comes To Blu-ray In Less Than Four Months – But Only The Theatrical Versions!!

I am – Hercules!!
Warner Bros. Home Entertainment announced Monday that all three “Lord of the Rings” movies arrive on Blu-ray in a complete trilogy package April 6.
The good news is the price is reasonable for new Blu-ray: the suggested retail price is $99.98, which Amazon has already marked down to $69.99
, or $23.33 per feature.
The bad news is the new set will contain only the theatrical versions. Those of us waiting for HD versions of the longer, extended edits, the ones long issued on DVD, will have to wait longer. And Warner has not specified how much longer.
Disappointing!
Ralph Bakshi's 1978 animated version of "Lord of the Rings" hits Blu-ray a week later, on April 13.

December 2010 for the Extented Editions. Just in time for holiday giving.
-
I hate the theatrical versions, even seeing the Fellowship in theaters it felt stunted and rushed, and that went for the Two Towers and King as well. All the extended editions have that lovely breathing room, and just let you soak in the world so much more.
-
... is better in its theatrical version. The extended completely ruins the rhythm of the Shire portion of the film, and slows to a crawl in Lothlorien.
-
The only people buying this version are the non-fans or the "I have money to burn" completists.... I'll be waiting for the EE's thank you
-
Really? the EE is worth it for Galadriel's gifts alone....plus sooooo much more!
-
For the longer versions. I've already got the SD-DVD theatrical versions.
-
Didn't make a musical version. Chrissakes, get yer facts straight.
-
Maybe you were conflating Ralph Bakshi's version with the Rankin-Bass adaptation of RotK?
-
on any format, ever. once you see the Mouth of Sauron, there's no going back.
-
I understand why they did it, so I'm not pissed. I'll get the extended editions when they hit Blu-Ray, since I prefer those and I don't feel like I need both versions.
-
Some of the stuff in all three films was brilliant and should never have been removed (Frodo and Sam seeing the elves leaving Middle Earth, the scene with the Mouth of Sauron at the end of ROTK) but a lot of it was just pointless or silly, and was cut for good reason. It'd be cool if they somehow could allow you to choose which additional scenes to include in the movies.
-
I prefer them - there are some embarrassing scenes in Return of the King ("Game over"), and while there are some pretty elements in places the films generally benefit from a firm but understanding editor. It is very, very, VERY apparent in the extended cuts that Fran had a much larger hand in these films than she gets credit for.
-
Besides, WB is always going to milk this cash cow.Peter Jackson just stated yesterday that the extended versions are coming out closer to the Hobbit (2011).In other news the Alien Tetrology (they decided the made-up Quadrilogy was stupid) will be released sometime next year not only with everything from the Quadrilogy, but with a bevy of new extras too! The Quadrilogy was the biggest DVD boxset of all time, I guess they are aiming for the Tetrology to be the biggest BD boxset of all time too!
-
Seriously, fuck the dead skull of WB. Releasing the theatrical versions alone on BD is fucking bullshit. The cocksucker at WB who thought up this obvious QUADRUPLE DIP needs to be punched in the fucking cock.If WB respected LOTR fans ONE FUCKING BIT, they'd have released on big box for $80 or so with the theatrical AND extended editions. But no, they wanted to shove their massive fucking dildo (because they have no dicks) into the assholes of any retards dumb enough to fall for this shit.In closing, FUCK YOU WB!
-
Sorely missing from the theatrical versions. They just ignore him?! No thanks.
-
The theatrical version is soulless.
-
That's why Trick R Treat only has extras on the Blu-Ray, and why the only extras for Terminator: Salvation is the BLU-RAY, and why you won't find an Ultimate Set of Watchmen with all 3 cuts on it, and why they've released 7 different versions of Harry Potter on DVD at this point, and so on and so on...
-
Was waaaaaaay better than the theatrical one! It was so much more graceful and took its time introducing us to the Hobbits. Rhythm in the theatrical version opening? Felt rushed to me.
-
I have to figure that most people who would shell out the cash for a pricier hi-def version of these films would hold out for the extended version. I know I will. Sure the the theatrical cuts are still good, but those are not the versions I'd keep on hand if I want to revisit this trilogy.
-
by the time the EEs come out on the Blu-Ray, we'll all be converting over to streaming broadband anyway. Sorry studios, but the delayed/multiple release game ain't going to work again!

-
wasn't this shit long enough? I liked it but EXTENDED VERSION? gimme a fuckin break.
-
for the extended ones. I heard Jackson was saving some extensive special features for the ultimate set as well. Which should obviously release a year later at earliest. I'll give these a rent.
-
Double, triple and quadruple dipping only exists if you buy each version as they're released like a crazed fanboy. Now, admittedly some of us are that. But in this case, you KNOW that there's going to be an extended version and/or ultimate version released in the future. So just wait and get that one. Problem solved. You can't blame the studios for releasing everything they can, though. It's their job to make money.
-
Mouth of Sauron! Saruman's death! Gandalf vs. the Witch-King! Seeing Gothmog finally get his! Without these scenes the third film just feels incomplete.
-
Ummm so fucking old news.
-
Taking your time isn't always a good thing. The Shire portion of the theatrical Fellowship was brilliantly edited to introduce the world to the audience, and when they went back and reinserted the cut footage, the meticulously crafted cadence was thrown off. Before, the musical cues and cuts literally carried you along through an admittedly very quick information dump. But that's what's needed when you're beginning a story, not a long dissertation exploring all the details.
-
About fucking time Doctor Who got some love. Waters of Mars was... very good. The End of Time will be... f*****g excellent.
Oh, and nobody buys the theatrical LOTR... unless they are... dumb. -
Those theatrical cuts feel too short.
-
I will rent
-
Which contained new music/musical cues. I totally dig the extended beginning of Fellowship, but of the three EE versions I do think the middle to end of that one has the most "slow down". However, being a complete Tolkien geek I really didn't mind.
-
you can start getting into the detail, and that's why I agree the Two Towers and RotK EE's are better. But Fellowship just feels off kilter. And yes, you need to know about Galadriel's gifts for them to make sense later, but all I know is that if there's one part of the trilogy most likely to make me fall asleep, it's Lothlorien.
-
...some of us only read these kind of stories on AICN, so it's never old news to us. Just sayin'.
-
D9 comes out next week.
-
when they force another format change
You can buy them all again -
... in the gimped versions. Thanks anyway.
-
Nobody is forced to buy anything. And five years is a long time, so I don't mind buying em again on a better format.
-
No more physical discs.
-
...you really need to ummm start checking other websites.
-
Because I mostly read real news, music and sports websites. I just come to AICN because I've been doing so for years and I dig it. If I run into a story about movies someplace else, cool. Otherwise, I'm not obsessive about reading that kind of story and I get all I need right here.

Do the DVD Extended Versions not come with theatrical versions
by juansanchez
-
Peter Jackson is the one that wants to delay this. He has said that he wants to develop new material and that the EEs will be released closer to the Hobbit films.
http://www.thedigitalbits.com/#mytwocents -
This is WBs decision. Instead of waiting and putting out a complete box set (theatrical and extended) closer to Hobbit, they go and pull this bullshit. Clear attempt to assrape retards who don't know any better and will plunk down for this shit, when the EEs will be released in another year.FUCK YOU, Warner Bros

Did not buy the standard edition DVD's either, just waited till the real full versions came out and I will do the same thing here. Extended editions on Bluray will get my money... Pay Attention WB

-
You are retarded if you expected anything different. They know people are dumb enough to buy every edition just like Star Wars as long as they release them in the right order.
-
Seriously. You need to look out for retarded folk. Not fuck them.
-
...equals Me No Likey. As in, I'll pass.
But let's face it; the strategy behind releasing DVDs is built around milking as many dollars as possible...and releasing the theatrical first, followed by extended versions is simply a cynical Hollywood business model, pure and simple. -
I'm not sure if you followed my link, so here's a quote:
"sources tell us that the extended cuts are being held back at director Peter Jackson's request so that he can prepare more elaborate Blu-ray releases of those for debut closer to the theatrical and home video release of the two Hobbit films (now due in 2011 and 2012)."
I know it sucks to lump Jackson in with Lucas, but they share the same attitude. He's even quoted in this month's Esquire as saying
"I'm very aware that every time we make a movie, we're risking someone else's money more than anything to do with us. The worst thing that can happen to us is that we get a bad review."
Reviews are more important than anything else. Well done, Pete.
-
"Instead of waiting and putting out a complete box set (theatrical and extended) closer to Hobbit, they go and pull this bullshit."
-
This isn't on PJ for holding back the EEs, this is on WB for putting out a theatrical-only version.
-
I'm waiting and not taking the double dip. But, Jackson's no saint. Either way, whatever.
-
No fucking way and I'm double dipping on this shit again! I'll stick with the EE DVD set until then.
-
That's all I need. I can see that the characters have hands and eyes, and can tell Frodo from Gandalf. The DVDs are good enough. Don't give Warner your money at all, or they'll keep shitting on us with BluRay®.
-
when they fucking warn you about it!!!! you DON'T have to buy them! take some responsibility!
Truth is, other than people on the internet, the average consumer rather have the theatrical cuts. -
I'm a snob about the extended cut versions. My name (real name, not poser userID) is among those in the "fan" credits at the end and they only appear on the extended versions.
-
Ooooo lets release the regular first, a certain percentage will buy it because it's "BluRay" & will get them again when the full version is released.
Rat Bastards.
-
We need this film in all its HD glory with the alternate ending in color.
-
I mean... c'mon.
-
I don't care.
-
Even though I really want to see LOTR on blu-ray, I don't ever watch the theatrical versions. Once a year I watch the extended versions. So, I won't be double-dipped this time around. Greedy suits.
-
LOTR would work better as a miniseries.
-
I already have the extended versions on DVD, both of the sets only because I wanted all the interviews. However this is just killing me having to wait another year for the extended versions..
I must not bite.. Must not double dip... -
A cleaned up version of Superman and Superman II (the original cut) would be nice..
-
I will gladly replace them with a Blu-Ray trilogy which I'm SURE will be heavily discounted when it is released. MAN UP, crybabies! It's Lord of the Rings in HD.
-
Sony's already working on the 'next step' format, something like 1000gb disc.
-
Some of the special effects are look downright shoddy at this point. I wonder if Jackie will do a Lucas and redo the fx at some point
-
because it's yet more double dipping from the movie studios. Once you've seen the extended versions there is no point watching the theatrical cut.
-
some of the effects may be dated, but the trilogy is as good as ever still. And it doesn't need to be retouched just to make the effects look prettier. Leave it alone. Fucknuts Lucas' approach is stupid
-
Money grubbing whores, I've been waiting too long for this!
-
We know the EEs are being held back at Jackson's request so he can do a real elaborate set for around the time of the Hobbit release. So these theatrical editions are a stop-gap. I.e., it's these now and then the EEs in 2011/2012, or NOTHING until 2011/2012. Considering this is ALL announced beforehand, why the hell are you upset? If you want the EEs, you are waiting the EXACT SAME amount of time for them. Anyone who wants the theatricals can get them now if they wish, and they'll know full well what they're getting into since all the information about the EE release timeframe has already been announced. Quit the bitching.
-
Call it a blessing. 3 hour theatrical version isn't enough? Could have summed up the trilogy in a half hour, tops.
-
Because he's milking this almost as bad as Star Wars. If The Hobbit movies are terrible, and they create a shitty LOTR cartoon, then they would be like twins!

EE will come to blu ray when The Hobbit comes out
by lavatory love machine
2 years from now
-
Can't get mad at W.B.. This was Peter Jackson's call. Don't expect the E.E's to be released until after the Hobbit comes out (either) in the theater or dvd. Me, i'm gonna' hold out until Peter Jackson works out a joint venture that both W.B. and Sony can live with, thus leading to a magnum, ultimate Director's cut box set of THE HOBBIT AND THE LORD OF THE RINGS IN GIANT BOX GIFT SET. (It's probably a pipe dream, though)
-
but only if Gollum is digitally superimposed with Corky from "Life Goes On". Or Mister T; either one will do. Shalom aleichem, bitches.
-
...a long ass triolgy with no payoff... the main bad guy just looked at elves and dwarves? geddafuqouttahere... Two Towers was cool though, but besides that... blah!
-
Goot try. I'll wait.
-
it moves at a good clip. though i'm a devout star wars fanatic i have to say lotr is superior. empire is what tips the scales back over to star wars.
-
we all know it to be true.
-
Some scenes of the EE's are excellent, but between some rubbish new scenes and the 45mins+ added to films that are already a third longer than the average person's preferred movie concentration span of 2 hours, for me the negatives of the EE generally outweigh the positives compared to the Theatrical cut. Some naff scenes dilutes the very high quality and even on a viewing of the FOTR EE one's left feeling lethargic.
Like Monkey butler said, it would be awesome if we were given the option to skip some bits (Lothlorien, Final Tally, Game over, "This army", "Sam, hit me!") yet keep others that are of the same outstanding quality as the rest of the Theatrical cut.
In the end I decided to make a fan edit of each film with a selection of the best EE scenes with TMPGenc-which after many hours spent working on it, I am happy to say its the only way to watch it!
The EE's are certainly not ultimate editions-your average casual fan in the street especially will prefer the TC's - so it seems logical to me to release these first.
Oh, that and...
...I heard the reason for the delayed EE release is so PJ can digitally replace Ian Holm with an aged Toby Maguire ;) -
on the box? That was another hideous decision.Hold out for Holographic Versatile Disc. ;-)
-
the same guy who decided that 95% off all Blu-Rays would have it? It's blue, to let the consumer know that it's a Blu-Ray. You underestimate some people's ignorance of different formats. There really are idiots out there who need that reminder
-
I mean its not like it hasn't been done before..lol..
-
With all the space available in Blu Ray's selling only the theatrical version is a slap in the face to fans. The media has more than enough room to fit both theatrical AND extended.
-
but I'll wait for the EE.
-
if they don't have a realse plan. honestly who's going to buy this as well as the extendeds? just wait for the definitives.... i can
-
I bought theatrical version of the DVDs that were released before the extended editions were announced, maybe that was just The Fellowship of The Ring. Then I bought the extended editions. I will probably just borrow these from a friend until the extended editions are released. Oh and I watched each of them in the cinema too, would that quintuple or quintuple dipping if I bought both versions of the Blu Ray?
Also, does anyone else in the UK get really pissed off with the price of Blu Ray here? The price difference here is noticeably less than usual but its still $69.99 in the US and £49.99 ($82 ish) here. Its like a third world country where new media is an extreme luxury. Everything is a fucking rip off here. -
I proof read that piece of shit post as well!
-
Especially if you've got a high Def TV, anyone who's still buying DVD in this day and age but owns a HD TV is kidding themselves and better off getting their old TV back from the dump! That said, these releases are an inevitable one, a lot of regular joe's simply can't sit through movies above 2 or 2 and half hours without complaining its too long. This release is for them and they can shove it! Extended release or nothing for me and it better be a damn good transfer to Blu Ray!
-

Boo! I don't count the theatrical versions as the real movies.
by orionsangels
I recently tried watching the theatrical versions and they're an editing nightmare. A hack job of editing! I understand why PJ did it at the time, for running time. No one wants to sit through a 4hr movie and for what they were, he did an ok job, but after seeing the extended versions. They just don't hold up. I'll wait for the Extended versions on Bluray.
-
Dec 15, 2009 4:31:29 AM CST
Ralph Bakshi's animated muscial version of "Lord of the Rings"??
by orionsangels
It wasn't a musical, unless you're being sarcastic? Sure the Hobbits sang a few songs here and there, but there was way more singing in PJ's version.
-
remember the DVD ads you used to get before the movie/trailers when you rented a VHS movie about how much better the picture quality was, then it would show you a comparison split screen between how much better DVD was?
-
but putting the bar directly on a collection box that mucks up the color scheme is idiotic. That, and blu-ray boxes are shorter and thinner. Pretty easy to discern.
-
that PJ has like 300 hours of unreleased scenes
Expect Special Anniversary Platinum Directors Cut releases with 20 never seen before minutes for at least the next 30 years -
"Double dipping is evil" The obvious reply to this is that no one is 'forcing' you to buy this blu ray. In fact many average joe's out there (outside of the typical aicn reader) will prefer the theatrical cut and wouldn't want to pay extra to have a set that includes the EE.
"We want the EE now". Hold your horses everybody, if it means we get a better transfer, better extras, and perhaps even a few touched up effects (im looking at you Wargs) then it'll be worth the wait.

-
We should boycott them. Screw WB.
-
No thanks. Put the Easterlings back in Pelennor Fields, I say!
-
TBers I mean, not WB or whoever. It's not their fucking fault you whiners aren't interested enough to notice when they tell you like a year in advance (and then keep telling you) that they'll release both Theatrical and Extended so you can make your decision (and for these actually seamless branching compromises quality). Then suddenly you're all offended with most of you acting like it's been sprung on you. Double/triple/umpteenth dump my arse. They said both were coming and gave you the choice. Some people just aren't happy unless they're not happy...
Personally I like the extendeds of Fellowship and Return, but the theatrical of Towers. For reasons probably in opposition to most of you. But at least I know what I'm in for with the HD and will make my decision without bleating about being duped or whatever.
I guess most of you whiners are the same fools who blame Paranormal Activity the film for the hype that was generated by the marketing campaign (NOT the film). Morons. -
i can wait until the release the actual versions....

by white_vader
to boycott or whatever.
Except that That greedy fucker Shaye is long gone and New LIne only exists on paper these days, not as a company. Warners just keeps the name going for the paperwork. -
As with the others above, no way am I going to double-dip again for LoTR. The DVD's are perfectly fine, upscaled for my HDTV's, for now. I'll only buy the Blu-Ray when they EE's are provided. You can bet your Po-Ta-Toes that the EE's will have seamless branching, so you can watch the extended or theatrical versions, along with all of the new features that PJ creates. We just have to wait a couple years (estimates are 2012).
-
that isn't part of the cover. its just an insert type thing attached to the back showing the movie info and contents. it'll come right off once you remove the plastic wrapping. they always do this to blu box sets so people realize its not DVD. most of the time the box is smaller than the DVD version but guess they wanna play it safe.
-
after over 16 hours per movie and like 75 commentaries each, what the hell else is there to say or show? they should do like King Kong and release movie only versions, i'd probably get that if only to be able to watch without switching discs in the middle.
-

I'd like to say I won't buy this but....

Fuck it I'm gonna have to see Gollum, the battle of Pellenor Fields, Nazgul, Mines of Moria, Balrog, Fell Beasts, Cave Trolls, Isengard and Uruk-hai in high definition sweetness. Damn you Peter Jackson for creating such wonderful sights...
-
Getting really, really sick and tired of these studios expecting another bite at the apple. LOTR Theatrical on DVD, then EE, now Theatrical on Blu, then EE on Blu. Are you kidding? Are you George Lucas? Blood from a stone here, guys.
-
I think both FOTR cuts are pretty good, definitely the best theatrical cut of the three, the most perfect film. Return of the King is a complete mess in both cuts IMO and needs a definitive recut. The Two Towers needs to find some middle ground with theatrical and extended. Saruman's demise should be recut for the end of TTT, including the cut revelation of Wormtongue poisoning Theoden's son, which they did shoot.
-
Might as well get DVDs cheap and wait for the inevitable download revolution through your XBox and PS3. Return of the King's theatrical version sucked and was the most undeserving Best Picture of the decade. The extended edition was far superior.
-
After DVD I'm done buying consumer video. I absolutely refuse to re-purchase my "outdated" 1200+ DVD library for another temporary format. Only folks getting Blu-Ray for free actually give a shit about the format. And yes, we are being pushed by the retailers to buy everything over again. Look at the retail space devoted now to DVD as compared to Blu-Ray. The studios want to phase out the cheaper format and FORCE the premium one. As I've said before and will say again - this is what they've done to the music industry, FORCING digital download on a public that didn't necessarily want it. They're doing it again with "next gen" video.
-
Streaming digital means never again owning a copy of any recorded work. It means pricing models geared towards rental of every spin of every song, every film, every flip of every digital page of a book. It's coming, but no one seems to care.
-
Blu Ray would be nice, but the DVD EXTENDED editions are the best and look lovely, lovely upscaled on my HD tv. Goodnight.
-
Well said white_vader. Some people seem to think that companies that produce films aren't there to make money. If they didn't make money, they wouldn't make the films. Everybody knows that Extendeds will be coming, so if you want those, then wait. Personally, if I was bothered about seeing these in Blu-Ray (which at the moment, i'm not), i would wait for the extended versions.. Hey ho
-
Sideways mouth was way too Fruedian. Try looking at it and don't think vagina.
-
I just got one. Why the fuck does everything look all speed up?
-
Are either just lazy or have a short attention span. The extended cuts are superior in every way. More so for the TWO TOWERS and RETURN OF THE KING. There are entire scenes impoortant to the actual story missing from those two theatrical cuts. If you'd rather watch the cliff notes version of LORD OF THE RINGS, you probably should go rent WILLOW. I find myself scratching my head that the studios would even release RINGS, the theatrical cut as a standalone. I mean, I guess it'll make them some money. But I bet it'll piss more people off than not. And it's not cheap to produce blu ray. If it was me, I'd release the films on two to three discs at a time kind of like the new Harry Potter Ultimate sets. Let folks choose which version they want to see at a sitting. I think that's the proper way to handle it. Not continue to try and make fans double dip.
-

At one point we were getting a disc full of deleted scenes
by revenge_of_fett
That's right, there is apparently MORE deleted material from these films. There were plans for an ultimate box set that would have them all housed on an extra disc. I don't know what happened to those plans. It could be that PJ is planning yet another cut of all 3 films films that incorporates some of that material, but that's pure speculation.
-
I've been meaning to see the extended versions for years now, plus I haven't seen any of the LOTR movies since Return Of The King way back in 2003, so when the extended versions eventually come out on blu ray watching them with all the news scenes will be like a totally new experience, maybe I should read the books first though....
-
I love to read, but I have ADHD so it can sometimes be kinda hard for me, I find myself sometimes getting anxious and taking long breaks or procrastinating allot when it comes to finishing a book, it took me about a month to read the entire Dark Tower series and I consider that doing pretty well, but there's soooooo many books that I want to read (Stephen King or otherwise) that I'm not sure I could find the time to read the Lord Of Rings anytime soon, oh well...
-
Much better when you look at them like an extremely well-produced miniseries instead of movies. If you don't believe me try sitting through the extended editions in a theater....torture. They're much better seen at home where you can pause or stop as needed and enjoy at your own pace. And yes, added scenes like the Mouth of Sauron make them for me as well. Going back to the original versions after that just make them seem like a bad TV edit.
-
who thinks this is truly great news. Lord of the Rings in glorious HD! They worked a lot on this, hope it would be the best looking Blu-Ray since The Dark Knight.
And btw. these theatrical cuts made bazillions of dollars, so don't blame the cuts, you geeks!) -
FUCK YES.

TheMightyMonarch, yes you're right. Me and my good lady watched all three EE a couple of months ago, but we did so over a period of two weeks. An hour one night, an hour another...
I was worried they wouldn't hold up, or still induce that 'magic' I felt back when they were released. Couldn't have been more wrong. Really immersive, brilliant movies. -
Oh wait. Even with Itunes and MP3 downloads we still have physical music media being sold in stores. So much for the digital revolution.

So just the other day/ Week, i was watching the Theatrical of TTT and ROTK, thus thinking about the the EEs and i was thinking about the annoying comical scenes placed in there that could have been easily filled with real meaty scenes. I had this same Idea to make my own cut. I would love to see your cut, and actually make one of my own.

Gandalf and Aragorn are standing on a "porch" before Aragorn gets the dead guys. It's a really pointless scene because Gandalf pretty much just sums up the entire plot up to that point. It's like "Yes....I KNOW!". And why is he telling Aragorn, the guy who has been LIVING it? Silly.

Blue strip is more often than not just part of plastic packaging
by knowthyself
Of course the only ppl that complain are the ppl who have yet to purchase a bluray disc.
-
Just release the fucking special edition right away. Stop raping our wallets. They just want people to buy it twice because they have no patience (like I did with the regular DVD versions...God, was I stupid).
-
my LOTR EE's look pretty amazing played through the PS3. They're obviously not 1080, but they look better than most plain dvd's on my HDTV.
-
If I already own something and I need to see it that badly on Blu-Ray, I'll Netflix it.
-
"I want to see LOTR on Blu Ray because..." or in other words what's the most spectacular shot in the LOTR trilogy?
The dojo votes for the breaching of Helm's Deep wall. Any others? -
Anyone know where I can find a list of all the fan club names hat are on each EE DVD? I can't remember for the life of me if I made it on there or not. I think there may have been a different list for each DVD, anyone know?
-
And the Rankin n Bass "The Hobbit" kicks all kinds of ass.

and the nextgen consoles are a small taste of what is coming in our way...

you can now smell the farts and burps from Peter Jackson, all in 3d.
-
I swear there are moments where I think it can match up to an HD transfer when upscaled. They did such an incredible job on that DVD transfer. (King Kong as well. PJ has the touch it seems.)On Bluray these movies are going to prob also be the standard.
-
Pretty standard marketing tactic, probably releasing the EE's to coincide with the theatrical release of the Hobbit. Does anyone think that they'll replace the flashback scene of Holm in Gollum's cave once they have their new Bilbo cast? I would actually prefer that for visual continuity. Keep new audiences on the same page.
-
and their SFX were only ever done for SD/DVD resolutions while the theatrical versions were made to be printed on filmCould be a simple issue of them having to re-render or redo stuff to get the extra footage to 1080P

Good. Theatrical versions are better 60% of the time.
by iamthethirdrevelation
The extenze versions of LoTR are wayyy too long and have too much of that Tolkien-tangent nonsense. If any of the extendos is even close in quality to the theatrical, it's 'Fellowship', but the TTT and RotK are silly, silly nonsense in 4+ hour form.
-
The theatrical versions are cut down per the wishes of New Line. The EEs are the versions PJ really wanted. So it's stupid to release the theatrical versions now. The EEs are far better films.
-
Here in NZ I'm sure they played the first two EE's in cinemas just before ROTK was released. This would imply they were produced to the same standard as the theatrical releases, and thus could be happily transferred to 1080p Blu-Ray.That said, it's always possible that they played them despite the extra segments being low-def. It isn't unheard of for cinemas to let that slide in NZ, hoping the audience won't notice.
-
an insert that said LOTR was coming soon. And that was over a year ago. Now, how long till Alien, Back To The Future, Indy Jones, etc. come out on BluRay? I know Lucas will put Star Wars out on Blu just months before the new cranial holo-implants will become the norm.
-
Thank you.
-
Guys dick you around like there's no tomorrow on "this version, that version", and now they've factored Blu-Ray into the mix for even MORE "special/director's cut/extended/ultimate" version bullshit...
Shove your shitty little scratched up discs in the biologically appropriate slot, fuckers. -
It's money grubbing dumb shit like this that makes me not even bother with collecting DVD's of shit I like at all. I would like to think that in the age of bluray shit like this wouldn't happen, and if it did it wouldn't happen to the actual bluray version where you would think they would take advantage of its capabilities and offer ALL VERSIONS OF THE FILM POSSIBLE in one release. Hey big studios, moves like this do not make me want to stop pirating your shit AT ALL.
-
Jackson did. Snyder did. Did you miss the memo? I knew fully well to avoid theatricals on DVD bc Extendeds were on their way in the fall. As for the bluray release no body has a gun to your head to buy it again so quit your bitching.
-
I love having the disc, I'm a nerd I collect. So fuck downloading I don't care if I have spend twice as much for a disc I'm doing it. I'm not buying these those I'll just wait I don't get a hard on from LOTR like some of you obviously do. So I'll just wait till the right set comes out.

I'm waiting for the extended extended versions
by turd_has_risen_from_the_grave
Where Peter Jackson puts back in scenes like the fates of Legolas and Gimli at the end of ROTK, and the orcs chasing the fellowship into Lothlorien. In fact, he'll probably go back and shoot additional scenes to be inserted, during the production of The Hobbit, concerning the battles at The Lonely Mountain and Mirkwood, which are going on at the same time as The Pelennor dust-up. I think he jokes about this during the commentaries - but IThe EE are far better than the theatricals too; especially in the case of TTT and ROTK. Most plump for Fellowship as the best Rings film of the trio, but as far as I'm concerned the EE ROTK is the crowning glory of the trilogy.
-
Meant to say - "I think he jokes about this during the commentaries - but I don't think he was being entirely tongue-in-cheek. He sounded quite enthusiastic about the idea, like a kid in a candy shop, much to the horror of his two female collaborators (who had presumably been driven to exhaustion already by the exhaustive shooting schedules of the existing films). The man's got passion, that's for sure."

Run windows 7 as administrator and I can log into aicn again... motherfucker...

good shout Cobra--Kai, lets get this back on topic-that topic being...excitement!
For me highlights include
Balrog fight pt1 and 2,
Eomer's charge at Helm's Deep (remember almost creaming myself seeing this at the cinema)
and the Rohirrim's charge at the Siege of Gondor.
The films are so consistently beautiful throughout -

mattforce7, the skills needed to alter dvds arent all that tough
by kungfuhobbit
...just tiresome!
as the EE's are not simply inserted scenes, but changed scoring and scenes shuffled around which complicates splicing the two together quite alot!
Ive been through several iterations of including new scenes Ive liked, the tradeoff is the viewing time. (Ive got so many friends who loved the films so bought the TC versions on dvd yet they never watch them cos "they're too long"!)
I edited Return of the Jedi and Starwars as well so that Han shoots first and Anakin's ghost is restored, free of silly prequel tampering, just like I remember it as a kid! -
Problem is, they don't have access to all the material - ie. additional scenes, alternate takes, sound and score, ability to alter or fix effects up to cinema standard, make good flowing cuts, etc. So you get edits of, say The Phantom Menace, that cut out junk, but end up being about 90 minutes long and devoid of meat. Not to mention, some of them seem to have no sense of pacing or storytelling. Removing, say, Jar Jar antics and Anakin's 'yipees' from Episode 1 just because you dislike them, does not a better movie make. You would really have to go back to the source to do that. I prefer the filmmaker's original vision over any fan edit, however flawed that may be.There's only one EE scene in LOTR that I really dislike, and that's the stupid corsairs scene with the pirate getting hit with the arrow - which resembles something out of Monty Python, pure farce and an example of PJ at his very worst, comparable to what some of the Gimli clowning verged on.

'Download Revolution' has been promised for 5 years now...
by flandersbum
...and still not on the horizon for the average person. Maybe by 2050?
-
Because I don't have BluRay right now. Except that I have occasionally over the past five years watched the entire extended edition trilogy in 44 minute increments as a 16-part miniseries. It works.
-
I do remember watching one of the films with the commentary on, and PJ talking about some additional scenes from the book they had filmed and then cut. He mentions something along the lines of 'Yes, we're adding them back in for the super-extra-extended edition, so New Line can make even *more* money!'
He did seem to genuinely regret that even some scenes had to be omitted from the extended editions. I wouldn't be surprised if the Extended Edition Blu-Rays feature a whole swag of extra options. -
Don't buy if you don't want a different cut or options of the same film. But please stop bitching about it.
-
pretty much unwatchable after seeing the whole version. If they're too long, watch in two sittings...
-
Sure, I prefer the EE of each film, but like Turd mentioned above, there are scenes like the one from the EE of ROTK, the PJ cameo with the pirate ship and the arrow. Silly and funny but also kinda stupid and not really "good" either.I think the theatrical cuts work fine as well, and I will probably get the blu-ray set since I only own the EE DVD's.I'm more worried about how The Hobbit will turn out, and whether or not they'll redo (Lucasize) some stuff from LOTR to fit with Hobbit. Although I don't think PJ will be a dickhead and only allow the "altered" versions plus low res originals to be released on blu like Lucas did with the original Star Wars trilogy on DVD.
-
I only want Alien and Aliens, with both cuts of each film. Maybe I'll get Alien 3 later on, as I do still like it and the atmosphere is effective, but it just doesn't come close to the first two. As for Resurrection, I can't even watch that one anymore. And let's not speak of AvP.
-
but the extended Two Towers and Return of the King shit all over the theatrical ones for sure. So overall, I'm waiting on the extended. Plus this set is going to be bare-bones. All the awesome featurettes will be on the extended set.
-
well?
-
But you won't because all you miserable geeks say one thing and do another. (I'll never buy SW on DVD- but you did, I'll never buy **** on DVD, but u will so just cram it)
HAHA! I hate these fucking movies with a passion so this makes me smile.
And NO Jedi doesn't ruin Star Wars you fucking cunt! It completes it- hobbit-fucking twats! -
I say NO to this. Not interested in the least.
-
Awesome handle, man! All praise the Mighty Jamie.
-
No reason to double-dip on this one. Mouth of Sauron was rubbish though. Talk about ruining an excellent scene in the books.
-
I agree. I think I was upset most about Aragorn's ultimate behavior, so unlike (to me) how he was portrayed in the books.
I am of a couple minds on barrow wights. One is that I would've liked to have seen fog on the barrow downs, but also I'm afraid the barrow scene would not have been done in a way that captured the feeling from the book. I'm basing this speculation on the Dead Marshes scene from the movie. -
Seeing it on the big screen back in 2001 was one of the best movie experiences I've had. It still holds up even without any new scenes.
-
in the books, Aragorn feels much tougher and manly.
-
ill wait for the next gen disc format. LOL.Seriously, i would consider EE's, though, if I was to collect movies.
