LORD OF THE RINGS Comes To Blu-ray In Less Than Four Months – But Only The Theatrical Versions!!

Published at:  Dec 15, 2009 11:23:11 AM CST

I am – Hercules!!

Warner Bros. Home Entertainment announced Monday that all three “Lord of the Rings” movies arrive on Blu-ray in a complete trilogy package April 6.

The good news is the price is reasonable for new Blu-ray: the suggested retail price is $99.98, which Amazon has already marked down to $69.99, or $23.33 per feature.

The bad news is the new set will contain only the theatrical versions. Those of us waiting for HD versions of the longer, extended edits, the ones long issued on DVD, will have to wait longer. And Warner has not specified how much longer.

Disappointing!

Ralph Bakshi's 1978 animated version of "Lord of the Rings" hits Blu-ray a week later, on April 13.

I hate the theatrical versions, even seeing the Fellowship in theaters it felt stunted and rushed, and that went for the Two Towers and King as well. All the extended editions have that lovely breathing room, and just let you soak in the world so much more.

    The Extended Editions annoyed me

    by monkey butler

Some of the stuff in all three films was brilliant and should never have been removed (Frodo and Sam seeing the elves leaving Middle Earth, the scene with the Mouth of Sauron at the end of ROTK) but a lot of it was just pointless or silly, and was cut for good reason. It'd be cool if they somehow could allow you to choose which additional scenes to include in the movies.

    Theatrical Versions Better

    by mal carne

I prefer them - there are some embarrassing scenes in Return of the King ("Game over"), and while there are some pretty elements in places the films generally benefit from a firm but understanding editor. It is very, very, VERY apparent in the extended cuts that Fran had a much larger hand in these films than she gets credit for.

Besides, WB is always going to milk this cash cow.Peter Jackson just stated yesterday that the extended versions are coming out closer to the Hobbit (2011).In other news the Alien Tetrology (they decided the made-up Quadrilogy was stupid) will be released sometime next year not only with everything from the Quadrilogy, but with a bevy of new extras too! The Quadrilogy was the biggest DVD boxset of all time, I guess they are aiming for the Tetrology to be the biggest BD boxset of all time too!

I have to figure that most people who would shell out the cash for a pricier hi-def version of these films would hold out for the extended version. I know I will. Sure the the theatrical cuts are still good, but those are not the versions I'd keep on hand if I want to revisit this trilogy.

Double, triple and quadruple dipping only exists if you buy each version as they're released like a crazed fanboy. Now, admittedly some of us are that. But in this case, you KNOW that there's going to be an extended version and/or ultimate version released in the future. So just wait and get that one. Problem solved. You can't blame the studios for releasing everything they can, though. It's their job to make money.

    by jayesstee

Taking your time isn't always a good thing. The Shire portion of the theatrical Fellowship was brilliantly edited to introduce the world to the audience, and when they went back and reinserted the cut footage, the meticulously crafted cadence was thrown off. Before, the musical cues and cuts literally carried you along through an admittedly very quick information dump. But that's what's needed when you're beginning a story, not a long dissertation exploring all the details.

you can start getting into the detail, and that's why I agree the Two Towers and RotK EE's are better. But Fellowship just feels off kilter. I'm not sure if you followed my link, so here's a quote:

"sources tell us that the extended cuts are being held back at director Peter Jackson's request so that he can prepare more elaborate Blu-ray releases of those for debut closer to the theatrical and home video release of the two Hobbit films (now due in 2011 and 2012)."

I know it sucks to lump Jackson in with Lucas, but they share the same attitude. He's even quoted in this month's Esquire as saying

"I'm very aware that every time we make a movie, we're risking someone else's money more than anything to do with us. The worst thing that can happen to us is that we get a bad review."

Reviews are more important than anything else. Well done, Pete.

We know the EEs are being held back at Jackson's request so he can do a real elaborate set for around the time of the Hobbit release. So these theatrical editions are a stop-gap. I.e., it's these now and then the EEs in 2011/2012, or NOTHING until 2011/2012. Considering this is ALL announced beforehand, why the hell are you upset? If you want the EEs, you are waiting the EXACT SAME amount of time for them. Anyone who wants the theatricals can get them now if they wish, and they'll know full well what they're getting into since all the information about the EE release timeframe has already been announced. Quit the bitching.

Can't get mad at W.B.. This was Peter Jackson's call. Don't expect the E.E's to be released until after the Hobbit comes out (either) in the theater or dvd. Me, i'm gonna' hold out until Peter Jackson works out a joint venture that both W.B. and Sony can live with, thus leading to a magnum, ultimate Director's cut box set of THE HOBBIT AND THE LORD OF THE RINGS IN GIANT BOX GIFT SET. My theatrical/EE hybrid cut > all other versions!

    by kungfuhobbit

Some scenes of the EE's are excellent, but between some rubbish new scenes and the 45mins+ added to films that are already a third longer than the average person's preferred movie concentration span of 2 hours, for me the negatives of the EE generally outweigh the positives compared to the Theatrical cut. Some naff scenes dilutes the very high quality and even on a viewing of the FOTR EE one's left feeling lethargic.

Like Monkey butler said, it would be awesome if we were given the option to skip some bits (Lothlorien, Final Tally, Game over, "This army", "Sam, hit me!") yet keep others that are of the same outstanding quality as the rest of the Theatrical cut.

In the end I decided to make a fan edit of each film with a selection of the best EE scenes with TMPGenc-which after many hours spent working on it, I am happy to say its the only way to watch it!

The EE's are certainly not ultimate editions-your average casual fan in the street especially will prefer the TC's - so it seems logical to me to release these first.

    Oh, that and...
...I heard the reason for the delayed EE release is so PJ can digitally replace Ian Holm with an aged Toby Maguire ;)

I will probably just borrow these from a friend until the extended editions are released. Oh and I watched each of them in the cinema too, would that quintuple or quintuple dipping if I bought both versions of the Blu Ray?
Also, does anyone else in the UK get really pissed off with the price of Blu Ray here? The price difference here is noticeably less than usual but its still $69.99 in the US and £49.99 ($82 ish) here. Its like a third world country where new media is an extreme luxury. It's not their fucking fault you whiners aren't interested enough to notice when they tell you like a year in advance (and then keep telling you) that they'll release both Theatrical and Extended so you can make your decision (and for these actually seamless branching compromises quality). Then suddenly you're all offended with most of you acting like it's been sprung on you. Double/triple/umpteenth dump my arse. They said both were coming and gave you the choice. Some people just aren't happy unless they're not happy...

Personally I like the extendeds of Fellowship and Return, but the theatrical of Towers. For reasons probably in opposition to most of you. But at least I know what I'm in for with the HD and will make my decision without bleating about being duped or whatever.

    by performingmonkey

I think both FOTR cuts are pretty good, definitely the best theatrical cut of the three, the most perfect film. Return of the King is a complete mess in both cuts IMO and needs a definitive recut. The Two Towers needs to find some middle ground with theatrical and extended. Saruman's demise should be recut for the end of TTT, including the cut revelation of Wormtongue poisoning Theoden's son, which they did shoot.

After DVD I'm done buying consumer video. I absolutely refuse to re-purchase my "outdated" 1200+ DVD library for another temporary format. Only folks getting Blu-Ray for free actually give a shit about the format. And yes, we are being pushed by the retailers to buy everything over again. Look at the retail space devoted now to DVD as compared to Blu-Ray. The studios want to phase out the cheaper format and FORCE the premium one. As I've said before and will say again - this is what they've done to the music industry, FORCING digital download on a public that didn't necessarily want it. They're doing it again with "next gen" video.

    by halloween68

Are either just lazy or have a short attention span. The extended cuts are superior in every way. More so for the TWO TOWERS and RETURN OF THE KING. There are entire scenes impoortant to the actual story missing from those two theatrical cuts. If you'd rather watch the cliff notes version of LORD OF THE RINGS, you probably should go rent WILLOW. I find myself scratching my head that the studios would even release RINGS, the theatrical cut as a standalone. I mean, I guess it'll make them some money. But I bet it'll piss more people off than not. And it's not cheap to produce blu ray. If it was me, I'd release the films on two to three discs at a time kind of like the new Harry Potter Ultimate sets. Let folks choose which version they want to see at a sitting. I think that's the proper way to handle it. Not continue to try and make fans double dip.

That's right, there is apparently MORE deleted material from these films. There were plans for an ultimate box set that would have them all housed on an extra disc. Much better when you look at them like an extremely well-produced miniseries instead of movies. If you don't believe me try sitting through the extended editions in a theater....torture. They're much better seen at home where you can pause or stop as needed and enjoy at your own pace. And yes, added scenes like the Mouth of Sauron make them for me as well. Going back to the original versions after that just make them seem like a bad TV edit.

So just the other day/ Week, i was watching the Theatrical of TTT and ROTK, thus thinking about the the EEs and i was thinking about the annoying comical scenes placed in there that could have been easily filled with real meaty scenes. I had this same Idea to make my own cut. I would love to see your cut, and actually make one of my own.

One weird beat in ROTK EE...

    by revenge_of_fett

Gandalf and Aragorn are standing on a "porch" before Aragorn gets the dead guys. It's a really pointless scene because Gandalf pretty much just sums up the entire plot up to that point. It's like "Yes....I KNOW!". And why is he telling Aragorn, the guy who has been LIVING it? Silly.

    by knowthyself

I swear there are moments where I think it can match up to an HD transfer when upscaled. They did such an incredible job on that DVD transfer. (King Kong as well. PJ has the touch it seems.)On Bluray these movies are going to prob also be the standard.

    Hobbit tie-in

    by smatt584

Pretty standard marketing tactic, probably releasing the EE's to coincide with the theatrical release of the Hobbit. Does anyone think that they'll replace the flashback scene of Holm in Gollum's cave once they have their new Bilbo cast? I would actually prefer that for visual continuity. Keep new audiences on the same page.

    by iamthethirdrevelation

The extenze versions of LoTR are wayyy too long and have too much of that Tolkien-tangent nonsense. If any of the extendos is even close in quality to the theatrical, it's 'Fellowship', but the TTT and RotK are silly, silly nonsense in 4+ hour form.

They played the EE's in cinema here in NZ.

    by ganda1f

Here in NZ I'm sure they played the first two EE's in cinemas just before ROTK was released. This would imply they were produced to the same standard as the theatrical releases, and thus could be happily transferred to 1080p Blu-Ray.That said, it's always possible that they played them despite the extra segments being low-def. It isn't unheard of for cinemas to let that slide in NZ, hoping the audience won't notice.

    by turd_has_risen_from_the_grave

Where Peter Jackson puts back in scenes like the fates of Legolas and Gimli at the end of ROTK, and the orcs chasing the fellowship into Lothlorien. In fact, he'll probably go back and shoot additional scenes to be inserted, during the production of The Hobbit, concerning the battles at The Lonely Mountain and Mirkwood, which are going on at the same time as The Pelennor dust-up. I think he jokes about this during the commentaries - but IThe EE are far better than the theatricals too; especially in the case of TTT and ROTK. Most plump for Fellowship as the best Rings film of the trio, but as far as I'm concerned the EE ROTK is the crowning glory of the trilogy.

Meant to say - "I think he jokes about this during the commentaries - but I don't think he was being entirely tongue-in-cheek. He sounded quite enthusiastic about the idea, like a kid in a candy shop, much to the horror of his two female collaborators (who had presumably been driven to exhaustion already by the exhaustive shooting schedules of the existing films). The man's got passion, that's for sure."

mattforce7, the skills needed to alter dvds arent all that tough

    by kungfuhobbit

    ...just tiresome!
as the EE's are not simply inserted scenes, but changed scoring and scenes shuffled around which complicates splicing the two together quite alot!
Ive been through several iterations of including new scenes Ive liked, the tradeoff is the viewing time. (Ive got so many friends who loved the films so bought the TC versions on dvd yet they never watch them cos "they're too long"!)
I edited Return of the Jedi and Starwars as well so that Han shoots first and Anakin's ghost is restored, free of silly prequel tampering, just like I remember it as a kid!

Never been a fan of these fan edits.

    by turd_has_risen_from_the_grave

Problem is, they don't have access to all the material - ie. additional scenes, alternate takes, sound and score, ability to alter or fix effects up to cinema standard, make good flowing cuts, etc. So you get edits of, say The Phantom Menace, that cut out junk, but end up being about 90 minutes long and devoid of meat. Not to mention, some of them seem to have no sense of pacing or storytelling. Removing, say, Jar Jar antics and Anakin's 'yipees' from Episode 1 just because you dislike them, does not a better movie make. You would really have to go back to the source to do that. I prefer the filmmaker's original vision over any fan edit, however flawed that may be.There's only one EE scene in LOTR that I really dislike, and that's the stupid corsairs scene with the pirate getting hit with the arrow - which resembles something out of Monty Python, pure farce and an example of PJ at his very worst, comparable to what some of the Gimli clowning verged on.

    by ganda1f

I do remember watching one of the films with the commentary on, and PJ talking about some additional scenes from the book they had filmed and then cut. He mentions something along the lines of 'Yes, we're adding them back in for the super-extra-extended edition, so New Line can make even *more* money!'
He did seem to genuinely regret that even some scenes had to be omitted from the extended editions. I wouldn't be surprised if the Extended Edition Blu-Rays feature a whole swag of extra options.

    by lv_426

Sure, I prefer the EE of each film, but like Turd mentioned above, there are scenes like the one from the EE of ROTK, the PJ cameo with the pirate ship and the arrow. Silly and funny but also kinda stupid and not really "good" either.I think the theatrical cuts work fine as well, and I will probably get the blu-ray set since I only own the EE DVD's.I'm more worried about how The Hobbit will turn out, and whether or not they'll redo (Lucasize) some stuff from LOTR to fit with Hobbit. Although I don't think PJ will be a dickhead and only allow the "altered" versions plus low res originals to be released on blu like Lucas did with the original Star Wars trilogy on DVD.

I only want Alien and Aliens, with both cuts of each film. Maybe I'll get Alien 3 later on, as I do still like it and the atmosphere is effective, but it just doesn't come close to the first two. As for Resurrection, I can't even watch that one anymore. And let's not speak of AvP.

I agree. I think I was upset most about Aragorn's ultimate behavior, so unlike (to me) how he was portrayed in the books.

I am of a couple minds on barrow wights. One is that I would've liked to have seen fog on the barrow downs, but also I'm afraid the barrow scene would not have been done in a way that captured the feeling from the book. I'm basing this speculation on the Dead Marshes scene from the movie.
