Solo4357 Has A Gander At The Looming FAMILY GUY Parody Of THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK!!

Published at:  Dec 13, 2009 7:34:57 PM CST

SPOILER ALERT !!

I am – Hercules!!

Last year’s “Blue Harvest,” which parodied “Episode IV: A New Hope,” remains easily the funniest episode of “Family Guy” I’ve seen, and now we’re upon an “Empire Strikes Back” parody from the same crew titled “Something Something Something Darkside.”

A publicist told me review copies would not be available until the DVD’s Dec. 22 release, but “Solo4357” somehow already has a review:

Basically, it’s what you’d expect, with Family Guy bringing the funny to the Empire Strikes back. There are several laugh out loud moments and being a DVD, F-Bombs do reign down, however with surgical strike precision rather than carpet bombing. Is it better than the first one?

I’d have to say yes with some caveats. The jokes are better overall with some real shockers. Meg is destroyed again. And even more thankfully is that Herbert makes few appearances and even less pedo-inspired jokes. They also wisely sidestepped the whole Leia kissing Luke scene as there’s probably no good way to make Chris tongue-kissing Lois funny. Mort shows up as Lando which is particularly inspired. The throwaway jokes work as do some jokes referencing the family guy mythos. Cleveland’s “no no no no no NO NO!” shows up, I’ll let you figure out where. And a Shut Up Meg also makes an appearance. Also enjoyable is the epilogue which once again the battle of Seth’s is on again thinly disguised between Chris and Peter on the merits of Robot Chicken. McFarlane FTW again as Green’s choices of movie roles are hit. Sorry Green, I love ya, but you deserve it if you keep taking crap like “Old Dogs.”

And that’s the problem, Robot Chicken. If you’ve seen their takes on Star Wars, you feel like they bogarted all the best gags. I know McFarlane plays the Emperor on RC and Mr. Pewterschmidt is a poor substitute. And there are far too “bruised knee” jokes. No I don’t mean the one from the trailer where the Walker actually bruises his knee. I mean those jokes that go on and on and on and on and on and on. Example is Peter trying to figure out what “cave” they are in by shooting the ground. Again and again and again and again…. til you wish horrible deaths on everyone involved. There are a few of these and they are not funny every time.

Still Stewie shines, Peter and Lois work well as Han and Leia and everyone has a chance to do something that should at least put a grin on your face. Overall, I’d say it’s worth picking up, if for no other reason, Tom Selleck’s live action cameo.

That entire long second paragraph is about nothing but them reusing old jokes that have long since stopped being funny. Pass.

The first Star Wars special, while a lovingly redrawn/musiced homage, completley failed on the funny, I don't forsee this being any different.

    by v'shael

when they obviously came from leaked pirate downloads?

Anyway, saw it a week ago like most everyone else. It's a pre-release version. The reason I say this, is because some things appear in the official trailer which weren't in the downloaded movie. So I expect some changes in the final store-buy version.

Review wise, it starts off slow and kinda weak. But it gets progressively better. A few really funny WTF laugh out loud moments. But if anything, it errs on the side of homage rather than piss-take.

    Seriously dissapointed

    by chesterfield slacks

with the first Star Wars parody. Seth and the crew are such huge fans of the SW franchise that it looks like they lost their nerve once they met Lucas. Watch the special features and it's obvious that they are all ga-ga about Star Wars, meeting their heroes, and it felt like they couldn't go all out parodying the films themselves. Instead, the gags are primarily based on what we know about the family's character quirks. It never really takes a wicked stab at the cultural impact of the Star Wars franchise...and Family Guy is so wickedly damn good at making us laugh out loud at our fixation with nonsense. I'm sure this new one will have no teeth, as it is made by SW fans, for SW fans.
    Too bad.

    by supercowbell5thecowbellhasspoken

whereas they used to make fun of aspects from the prequels or bad dialouge, now they just inserted family guy characters into star wars and made lame jokes. seriously at times its just the star wars movie animated, like during the battle scenes.

    let me guess...

    by mrgreentheplant

there will be at least 5 instances where the awkward/outdated moments of ESB's dialogue or plot inconsistencies will be "called out" with fourth-wall breaking, minute-long exchanges between the characters about said awkwardness/plot holes. blue harvest was littered with this bullshit and it detracted from the genuinely clever moments ("helen reddy, standing by"). tonight's episode was as predictable as the rest of the season has been, and, as an ex-huge fan, this show needs some kind of shake-up if it wants to end up like latter day south park, not latter day simpsons.

But having been a big South Park fan when the show started, what I have seen in the show the last few years...not funny. I know a lot of people still find it to be a riot, and while not everything I have seen has been bad, but I feel like the show is not nearly as funny as it used to be, IMO.That being said, Family Guy this season is hit and miss for me. The multiverse episode was great, but it's been an every other episode deal for me since, one good episode, one bad, one good, one bad. It seems like sometimes they concentrate more on doing something shocking rather than funny. I have not lost faith, but they need to step it up a bit, last season was, IMO funnier, at least so far. Still a fan, always will be, but they did kinda drop the ball this season.

Get in Oliva as Padme and there'd be a lot of comedy potential in there. But McFarlane said they wouldn't do a prequel trilogy, which I understand, but he has been dropping hints about maybe doing either Back to the Future, Wrath of Khan or Indiana Jones, which could also be good. Oh, and I hope McFarlane does his aggravated put-upon yet casually chatty Emperor like he does on Robot Chicken for the Family Guy parody. That's one of the best characters he does and it's not even on his own show. "No speak-o minimum wage-o"

isn't it obvious that FG has almost run it's course? Everything you mention screams "Move the Island" (the new term for Jumped the Shark). For me the downward turn began when Stewie outed himself and every episode includes jokes about his sexuality. As far as, Lois not kissing Chris: is this anymore offensive than an outwardly gay baby regularly having sexual relations with adult men? I think the person who said that they didn't want to piss off Lucas hit the nail on the head. Not as many dirty old man jokes?

    Lucas said no Luke-Leia jokes

That was part of the deal. Apparently he is quite sensitive about that little gaffe in the OT.

    Yeah, he's sensitive about it...

    by v'shael

Not because of the squicky incest factor, but because it's the most obvious way to put the lie to the oft-told bullshit that it was all planned out in the begining.

Well, if Macfarlane had planned out these parodies in advance...

    by royston lodge

...he might have held off on using some of the characters in the first one and saved them for much better roles later on.
For example, Joe would have made a really funny Yoda, and Adam West woulda made a really good Emperor. Mr Puterschmidt would have been a good choice to play Jabba in the next one.

isn't this trying to make gold out of turds

    by murdermostfowl

Or whatever the metaphor is... Family Guy isn't really all that funny, gang, so why did you expect this DVD to be funny. The OP nailed it on the head when he said Robot Chicken already covered this territory, and did so much much better.
Simpsons, Family Guy and All the other Fox Cartoons need to go to the retirement home.

The only thing I don't like is the nothing title.

    by zodnotgod

Already downloaded this. Funny stuff. How can anyone seriously review a Family Guy episode? You fucking snobby critics make me laugh.
