BNAT1138: The Fake List!!!

Published at:  Dec 12, 2009 12:04:37 AM CST

Hey folks, Harry here - back from the BNAT1138 pre-party where I met so many amazing people - that told me stories about their travels, their expectations and hopes... how AICN somehow helped them find a direction. That kinda blows my mind, because most of the time... the different people behind the site and myself... we're just out to have fun and share that fun with you. But when you meet people that aren't rich, aren't NAMES, but have that drive - and somehow something you wrote actually connected. That's amazing. So BNATTERS - you rule - and I know everyone that applied that didn't get in... well, you guys and gals rule too. There's just so many seats.

Speaking of - there will be Standby spots available - and possibly more than we've ever had before. We've had a quite a few people drop out due mainly to financial unforeseen tough times... a few cases of SWINE FLU (I shit you not) and just bad luck. For each of you that get in - that was somebody's dream that they've handed to you. And I know if you get down to the Drafthouse South at 10am, get a ticket and get chosen. That's your dream, and I hope dearly it comes true.

NOW - for the crazy tradition I started of creating alternate film schedules that perhaps somehow tie in to what is playing. SO. Here we go - I'll say there are 12 FEATURES in total. Some that are screening for the very first time. Some that have screened selectively. And then some that haven't screened in decades.

6 new... 6 old.... ...and I could be trying to trick you.

1. Brian DePalma's PHANTOM OF THE PARADISE

2. Levin & Maiuri's SE TUTTE LE DONNE DEL MONDO

3. Irving Pichel's QUICKSAND

4. Federico Fellini's 8 1/2

5. Franklin Schaffner's PAPILLON

6. Stanley Kubrick's THE SHINING

7. Steven Kastrissios' THE HORSEMAN

8. Alfred Hitchcock's LIFEBOAT

9. Jacopetti & Prosperi's ADDIO ZIO TOM

10. Peter Jackson's LOVELY BONES

11. Michael Winner's DEATH WISH

12. Henri-Georges Clouzot's LE SALAIRE DE LA PEUR

Now - remember... these ARE NOT the films playing. Sometimes, it is a fairly radical shift, but it makes sense in my mind. And as y'all are so fond of telling me.... I am insane. So, wherever you are this weekend. Call your friends, find a couple of these films and have a big movie orgy weekend. Mix in titles you know and would like to share with your friends - and if you do do that... write a talkback telling what you're watching, and how long you kept it up until you wimped out. And if you didn't wimp out, maybe you have what it takes to enjoy BUTT-NUMB-A-THON 12 - and if so - I hope to see your application next year.

Remember - BNAT1138 starts at 11am on the dot, NOT noon. There's no electronic devices allowed of any kind this side of a pacemaker... and even then... heh. This is done for a couple of reasons. There are films playing MONTHS & MONTHS & MONTHS ahead of time. There's even films that are not quite done, but are showing because the filmmakers & folks behind the film know they have got to get the word out there, but not the whole film quite yet. BUT for me. The real reason is this...

BNAT is an experience outside of our normal existence. The excitement you feel isn't to share instantly with the known world, but to share with your fellow BNATTERS. Want to tell someone how you felt - do it in person. No batteries required. It is exceptionally GREEN of you, me, all of us.

When BNAT is over... WRITE to your heart's delight. Tell the world just what the experience was like. I hope several of you attending share your thoughts with our readers at AICN, but also... the rest of the internet. It is an experience unlike anything other than a previous BNAT can give you - and this is a fucking great year. Let me tell you.

So without further hubbub, I'm hitting the sack. Dozing. And I will see you good folks at the Theater bright and early. Sweet Dreams!

For the love of God, Stanny...STAY IN THE BOX!

    by rocco curioso

Can someone please commission and finance a group of celluloid hitmen to track down & destroy every print of Kubrick's movies?(except "Full Metal Jacket", and then only the half with R.Lee Ermey chewing all the scenery one could ever hope for). Seriously... his movies are all antiseptic, misanthropic, and mostly lifeless due to his exacting God knows how many takes from his actors in every scene(that's not perfectionism,BTW... it's Stanny perpetually second-guessing himself).I was never so amused after his need to punch out one last grumpy following a 12-year hiatus("Eyes Wide Shut")caused him to drop dead, and then left a bevy of critics searching in vain for reasons to praise his inept swan song. Fuck him, and fuck Spielberg for trying to ride a dead horse two years later with "A.I.".

Good word, "miscreant". Can't argue against it, but I still think a WWS (World Without Stanny) would be greatly beneficial for the movie geeks of the future."Au contraire, homestyle" to your second point, however. I deserve good movies even more so, courtesy of my unique ability to detect farts in the wind (aka, Stanny's alleged magnum opuses) while everyone else mistakes them for the scent of roses.

    by the reluctant austinite

Harry has me completely stumped this year. The only one that seems obvious is "8 1/2" being "Nine", which is the usual spot for a musical. I think "The Horsemen" might just be a play on the title (--of the apocalypse) and be "Legion". "Death Wish" strikes me as "Kick Ass." The vintage stuff is impossible to guess. "Addio Zio Tom" is something really offensive. I'm completely blind this year. I can't imagine what most of those could be.

It's childish, sure, but not everything childish is bad, after all. :) It's fun to be there and be told the movies as they are about to start and knowing that it's just that room knowing what's happening. It's part of the culture of the event, really. I know it bugs some people, but for me having been to several and not being this year, I am finding that speculating about what might be playing is enormous fun.

I'd be surprised if a few didn't start coming out since a lot of people would have their cars there so they could have left their electronics in them and could update during the breaks.

Come on, the best movie last year was "I Love You, Man". And now, you expect him to pull in four or five blockbusters that don't even come out until summer?

    by tehcreepythinman

If I were you I'd get some nightvision videocamera's to tape the reaction of the audience. It would be a sea of wide eyes and gaping mouths at the mindblowing brutality of that movie. Let me be clear, it's an incredibly offensive film, but one with amazing Direction.

That was the only one I finally got up and left from. Yet another romantic comedy starring men friends as the wacky misunderstanders of each others feelings. Blergh. Unwatchable to me.

TehCreepyThinMan - He already did play it, at BNAT9. It was hard to watch.

#1 was Faust. #2 was The Lovely Bones. #3 was Girl Crazy. Also, from Adam Green's twitter, he's teasing that he's going to surprise an audience tonight w/ something. From that, you can deduce #8 is his new film Frozen.

if he'd kicked off BNAT with the Jan Svankmajer version of Faust, which is absolutely one of my favourite movies ever. I doubt he did though, somehow.

Also shown, by the way, was Jean-Pierre Jeunet's latest, Micmacs.

Kick Ass was the hit of BNAT THX11

    by the reluctant austinite

A good time was had by all, and some cool stuff screened early, but "Kick Ass" knocked everyone on their ass by FAR SURPASSING anyone's expectations. People clapped, cheered, laughed and screamed throughout. Also screened were "The Lovely Bones", "Shutter Island", "Frozen" (a unexpected hit with the audience/ someone actually passed out and had to be carried out into the lobby) and "Avatar". I'm sure there will be plenty of news and reviews to follow.

...a Martin Short film festival. Starting with Inner Space, that Fantastic Voyage rip-off with Dennis Quaid and Short, then the Danny Glover pair up, Pure Luck....followed by Clifford, Mumford, Jiminy Glick in LaLaWood, Captain Ron, and The Three Fugitives. (The Three Amigos would not be shown)
