BNAT1138: The Fake List!!!
Hey folks, Harry here - back from the BNAT1138 pre-party where I met so many amazing people - that told me stories about their travels, their expectations and hopes... how AICN somehow helped them find a direction. That kinda blows my mind, because most of the time... the different people behind the site and myself... we're just out to have fun and share that fun with you. But when you meet people that aren't rich, aren't NAMES, but have that drive - and somehow something you wrote actually connected. That's amazing. So BNATTERS - you rule - and I know everyone that applied that didn't get in... well, you guys and gals rule too. There's just so many seats.
Speaking of - there will be Standby spots available - and possibly more than we've ever had before. We've had a quite a few people drop out due mainly to financial unforeseen tough times... a few cases of SWINE FLU (I shit you not) and just bad luck. For each of you that get in - that was somebody's dream that they've handed to you. And I know if you get down to the Drafthouse South at 10am, get a ticket and get chosen. That's your dream, and I hope dearly it comes true.
NOW - for the crazy tradition I started of creating alternate film schedules that perhaps somehow tie in to what is playing. SO. Here we go - I'll say there are 12 FEATURES in total. Some that are screening for the very first time. Some that have screened selectively. And then some that haven't screened in decades.
6 new... 6 old.... ...and I could be trying to trick you.
1. Brian DePalma's PHANTOM OF THE PARADISE
2. Levin & Maiuri's SE TUTTE LE DONNE DEL MONDO
3. Irving Pichel's QUICKSAND
4. Federico Fellini's 8 1/2
5. Franklin Schaffner's PAPILLON
6. Stanley Kubrick's THE SHINING
7. Steven Kastrissios' THE HORSEMAN
8. Alfred Hitchcock's LIFEBOAT
9. Jacopetti & Prosperi's ADDIO ZIO TOM
10. Peter Jackson's LOVELY BONES
11. Michael Winner's DEATH WISH
12. Henri-Georges Clouzot's LE SALAIRE DE LA PEUR
Now - remember... these ARE NOT the films playing. Sometimes, it is a fairly radical shift, but it makes sense in my mind. And as y'all are so fond of telling me.... I am insane. So, wherever you are this weekend. Call your friends, find a couple of these films and have a big movie orgy weekend. Mix in titles you know and would like to share with your friends - and if you do do that... write a talkback telling what you're watching, and how long you kept it up until you wimped out. And if you didn't wimp out, maybe you have what it takes to enjoy BUTT-NUMB-A-THON 12 - and if so - I hope to see your application next year.
Remember - BNAT1138 starts at 11am on the dot, NOT noon. There's no electronic devices allowed of any kind this side of a pacemaker... and even then... heh. This is done for a couple of reasons. There are films playing MONTHS & MONTHS & MONTHS ahead of time. There's even films that are not quite done, but are showing because the filmmakers & folks behind the film know they have got to get the word out there, but not the whole film quite yet. BUT for me. The real reason is this...
BNAT is an experience outside of our normal existence. The excitement you feel isn't to share instantly with the known world, but to share with your fellow BNATTERS. Want to tell someone how you felt - do it in person. No batteries required. It is exceptionally GREEN of you, me, all of us.
When BNAT is over... WRITE to your heart's delight. Tell the world just what the experience was like. I hope several of you attending share your thoughts with our readers at AICN, but also... the rest of the internet. It is an experience unlike anything other than a previous BNAT can give you - and this is a fucking great year. Let me tell you.
So without further hubbub, I'm hitting the sack. Dozing. And I will see you good folks at the Theater bright and early. Sweet Dreams!

For the standby list, don't you mean 10am? I hope... or I already missed it...
-
OH NO, SHE DONE IT AGAIN!
-
*blush* - um, yeah, 10am, that's what I wrote. Reload and check.
-
I didn't get a chance to say hi tonight at the Highball, Harry, so I'll catch you sometime tomorrow. Now my wife and I just have to figure out how to get some sleep!!! It's like Christmas Eve and I just can't wait to see what's under the tree in the morning!! Thanks again for the invite... see you in a few hours!
-
that "Farewell, Uncle Tom" (aka Addio Zio Tom) made the fake list. That truly was an experience I will NEVER forget. Ever. "BECAUSE YOU'RE WHITE!!!!!"
-
is lovely bones and lovely bones is avatar.I don't know why but thats my hunch.
-
giggle.
-
Clash of the Titans? Lovely Bones = Sherlock Holmes??? I haven't a clue..just throwing random movie titles out. Don't mind the blind man playing darts, just be sure to stand behind him.
-
i just hope one year I am going over it in anticipation of my attendance......
-
8 1/2=Nine, Addio Zio Tom=Invictus, Lovely Bones=Lovely Bones, Le Salaire De La Peur=Avatar, Lifeboat=Alvin & The Chipmunks: The Squeakuel.
-
yes, the one from the early 80's.
-
8½ = 9
Deathwish = Edge of Darkness
Le Salaire de la peur = Avatar
-
two rivaling trucks carrying nitro to take out a fire? my bet's on ironman vs warmachine.
-
Phantom of the Paradise = Legion?
-
Right?
-
Would you make it that obvious, Harry?
-
made a comment that the Shutter Island trailer reminded me of The Shining a few days ago
-
Guys, I am jealous as hell I am not there with you this year. Stuck in Europe for the holidays. The only guess I have is Toy Story 3. I am convinced the PIXAR guys will show up again to bring you the greatness of Woody & Buzz. We will be reliving some of the greatness of last year's BNAT with watching Benjamin Button, Valkyrie, and I Love You Man this weekend. Have a blast whatever you see and don't fall asleep!
-
LOL - I'll give you more of a hint on THE SHINING. Think... INSANE AUTHORS. giggle.
-
SE TUTTE LE DONNE DEL MONDO = Imaginarium of Dr. Parnassus?
PAPILLON = Alice in Wonderland? -
LOL waggy beat me to the (wrong) guess.
-
Must be The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus. No one is more insane than Terry.
-
... QUICKSAND = M?
Peter Lorre creeps me out even more than Vincent Price and Jean-Claude Van Damme combined. -
Didn't I hear about some newly restored version or something like that recently?
-
... if LIFEBOAT = The Trial (1962 version of course).
I have to stop speculating about this list because I am never even close to right... but now I can't sleep! -
now THAT is something I am looking forward to. I am sure Avatar is nice, but I take Scorsese over Cameron any day of the week
-
is Kick-Ass. Moriarty compared the mask of the pahntom to that of Nic Cage as Big Daddy in Kick Ass...my guess...
-
Prisoners on an island.
-
Has to be. That or Stop! Or My Mom Will Shoot.
-
F yeah!
-
There is a fine line between the two.

My guesses. Some are probably way off, because 11 of my guesses
by johnny smith
Phantom of the Paradise = Crazy Heart. Se Tuttle Le Donne Del Mondo = Nine. Quicksand = Kick-Ass. 8 1/2 really is 8 1/2. Papillion = Shutter Island. The Shining = The Crazies. The Horseman = Alice in Wonderland. Lifeboat = The Book of Eli. Addio Zio Tom = The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus. Lovely Bones = A Couple of Dicks. Death Wish = Iron Man 2. Le Salaire De La Peur = The Wolfman.
-
Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World
-
On second thought, Lifeboat could also be Hot Tub Time Machine.
-
Good call on Lovely Bones being A Couple of Dicks.
-
And thanks, lennon. :)
-
I'd be guessing the upcoming speirig bros movie will be in there somewhere, and yeah Papillon= Shutter Island (or not)
-
Harry Brown?
-
Death wish= Machete
-
I mean, jesus, I'm so excited just to hear about the post-bnat round up, hear all the cool stuff coming out and the cool old flicks. ARGH, so jealous! Damn economy!
-
Just a shot in the dark, as both take place on a single location (in the latter's case, a ski lift), and Frozen will be an amazing film to experience with an audience.

Man, I've looked at these for the last 9 or 10 years
by seppukudkurosawa
And never ONCE bbeen anywhere near getting any, but as a cocktease these fake lists are always perfect. Luckily I've actually got 10 of those movies on DVD or elsewhere, so I guess I could have an alternative BNAT alongside you guys. Although I reckon I'll be able to get more into the films without having to make a mental map of all the various bodily odours and their respective owners around me in the cinema.

THE SHINING = ASIMOVLIVES' WEBCAM GREETING
by richard_gere_raped_my_gerbil
-
Can someone please commission and finance a group of celluloid hitmen to track down & destroy every print of Kubrick's movies?(except "Full Metal Jacket", and then only the half with R.Lee Ermey chewing all the scenery one could ever hope for). Seriously... his movies are all antiseptic, misanthropic, and mostly lifeless due to his exacting God knows how many takes from his actors in every scene(that's not perfectionism,BTW... it's Stanny perpetually second-guessing himself).I was never so amused after his need to punch out one last grumpy following a 12-year hiatus("Eyes Wide Shut")caused him to drop dead, and then left a bevy of critics searching in vain for reasons to praise his inept swan song. Fuck him, and fuck Spielberg for trying to ride a dead horse two years later with "A.I.".

Rocco Curioso, man that is worth such a banning
by player_two_has_entered_the_game
even if a joke you should have your fucking knackers chopped off and feed into your face. I'll put it down to having no taste at all. cool.
-
Miscreants like you are the reason smart people like Kubrick became misanthropic in the first place.
You don't deserve good movies; I have pity for you. -
That's a shot in the dark right there, and I doubt it, but man would that be a fucking cool surprise. Lucky Bastards.
-
Good word, "miscreant". Can't argue against it, but I still think a WWS (World Without Stanny) would be greatly beneficial for the movie geeks of the future."Au contraire, homestyle" to your second point, however. I deserve good movies even more so, courtesy of my unique ability to detect farts in the wind (aka, Stanny's alleged magnum opuses) while everyone else mistakes them for the scent of roses.
-
That movie fucking rocks.
-
i think lol
-
Has Harry transmogrified into a Japanese School girl?
What's with all the *blush* *giggle* shit?
Anyway, enjoy the event all who attend - im sure it will be a cinematic banquet to savor. -
Harry has me completely stumped this year. The only one that seems obvious is "8 1/2" being "Nine", which is the usual spot for a musical. I think "The Horsemen" might just be a play on the title (--of the apocalypse) and be "Legion". "Death Wish" strikes me as "Kick Ass." The vintage stuff is impossible to guess. "Addio Zio Tom" is something really offensive. I'm completely blind this year. I can't imagine what most of those could be.
-
there were 7 nightmares and one where freddy shared the limelight so 1/2, this is number 8 1/2
-
Only made it to one BNAT but it was a very badass experience. Going to try my luck again next year as hopefully if all goes well I will be living in Austin. Have fun!
-
If picked, I would have been there. Just sayin'. Waaah.
-
Beneficial to movie geeks? Meaning that no one would ever again see Paths of Glory, 2001, or Full Metal Jacket? Beneficial? Ohhkayyy then. Best of luck to you, my friend.
-
What the fuck, Harry? You make it seem like there are tons of standby, with swine flu, money problems and bad luck, and then when we get there, we're told there are 4 definite seats available (which there were 8 last year), and then, when they do the actual drawings, there are only 2?! Sounds like some fucking nepotism.
-
Last night - "quite a few people" dropped out. At 10am we were told 4, with 14 packets not picked up. At 11am, only 2 seats were given to the standby group. Yeah, I'm a little bitter.
-
Oh yeah he doesn't have a movie coming out like last year.
-
Who's that? There are only like 5 people going to BNAT who are regular TB'ers.
-
Rian Johnson is at BNAT this year.
-
Hey guys its standby.
yes the fact there were only two open seats was a bit disappointing but everyone wait knew they would only get in if they were lucky.
Now all we can do is wait for the report and for better luck next year. -
THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA (in digital 3-D)
-
I hope they're wrong. I wouldn't want to think people are watching all these cool movies while I'm stuck with my dick in my hands playing Super Mario...
-
looking for updates.
-
Unlikely. Pretty much since BNAT5 there's been an electronics embargo at BNAT. The only thing I can think of is that people wandering out for fresh air or not fresh smoking would be overheard by other Lamar patrons talking about what they saw and THOSE patrons tweeting about it.
-
That sucks. Used to love hearing constant updates. I noticed one dude on my twitter list said he won't be updating until it's over. Sort of takes a bit of the fun out of it. At least AICN could update!!
-
in that giggling "We're in a secret club for the next 24 hours!" way. It's childish, sure, but not everything childish is bad, after all. :) It's fun to be there and be told the movies as they are about to start and knowing that it's just that room knowing what's happening. It's part of the culture of the event, really. I know it bugs some people, but for me having been to several and not being this year, I am finding that speculating about what might be playing is enormous fun.
-
is probably THE EXPENDABLES.
LIFEBOAT is TRON:LEGACY -
...from my all-day marathon of "Police Academy" movies to let you know Leonard Nimoy is NOT at my house.
-
I'd be surprised if a few didn't start coming out since a lot of people would have their cars there so they could have left their electronics in them and could update during the breaks.
-
Dec 12, 2009 3:41:50 PM CST
I am EXTREMELY jealous that I'll be missing THE EXPENDABLES

If you're showing that shitty Dennis Quaid Horsemen film...
by shaneo632
Instead of the meant to be pretty good The Horseman, I will LOL.
-
Come on, the best movie last year was "I Love You, Man". And now, you expect him to pull in four or five blockbusters that don't even come out until summer?
-

I REALLY HOPE YOU'RE PLAYING ADDIO ZIO TOM AKA GOODBYE UNCLE TOM
by tehcreepythinman
If I were you I'd get some nightvision videocamera's to tape the reaction of the audience. It would be a sea of wide eyes and gaping mouths at the mindblowing brutality of that movie. Let me be clear, it's an incredibly offensive film, but one with amazing Direction.
-
That was the only one I finally got up and left from. Yet another romantic comedy starring men friends as the wacky misunderstanders of each others feelings. Blergh. Unwatchable to me.
TehCreepyThinMan - He already did play it, at BNAT9. It was hard to watch. -
We're 5 hours in, have to be on the 3rd movie, where r the updates? Anyone know what's being shown?
-
get a life, if you arnt there you shouldnt care
-
that new denis quaid movie where hes stranded in space i dont remember the name

Maybe Black Dynamite??
-
#1 was Faust. #2 was The Lovely Bones. #3 was Girl Crazy. Also, from Adam Green's twitter, he's teasing that he's going to surprise an audience tonight w/ something. From that, you can deduce #8 is his new film Frozen.

What about a shitbag? I mean if you actually sat on your ass for the duration, never once going to the bathroom because you came fuckin' prepared with medical supplies, well shouldn't you win something?

The draft house has a LOTR marathon in december where you can watch the movies on the big screen and eat a 7 course hobbit feast inspired by the movie. I'll be there.
-
...kick ass!!!!!!!!!
-
'Cause they DID. At least, that's what someone said on twitter. Can't wait to hear reactions.
-
Cuz lord if that bowling scene in TWBB ain't Kubrickian in extremis
-
*heh* ANOTHER one?! That's great. Second show, December 20th! That is truly Xmas material.
-
"Faust" (which one? My guess is the Murnau 1926... that or the 1967 Richard Burton adaptation of Marlow's play), "The Lovely Bones", "Girl Crazy", "Kick-Ass", "Shutter Island", "Frozen"... six out of twelve. We'll know soon enough!
-
were the last 2 films.
Decent line up, I must say. -
if he'd kicked off BNAT with the Jan Svankmajer version of Faust, which is absolutely one of my favourite movies ever. I doubt he did though, somehow.
Also shown, by the way, was Jean-Pierre Jeunet's latest, Micmacs.
Here are the two twitters I found a'gwan (no idea how they managed to fit their iphones up their anal cavities, though): http://twitter.com/GermainLussier and http://twitter.com/jonniechang

after 18-20 hours in a room with people i'd be sick of the people around me...sick of watching movies...sick of everything...i need my sleepytime. don't know how they do it.
-
Wolfman?
-
Precious,State & Main,Jailbait,Ed Wood, South Park, Targets, Let The Right One In, Bad Lieutenant-Port Of New Orleans, World's Greatest Dad, The Hurt Locker.
Food breaks took us pretty close to 24 hours. Would rather have been at the Drafthouse. -
WAS FUCKING AWESOME
-
...something starring either Calista Flockhart or the Olsen twins. To IMDB!!!
-
A good time was had by all, and some cool stuff screened early, but "Kick Ass" knocked everyone on their ass by FAR SURPASSING anyone's expectations. People clapped, cheered, laughed and screamed throughout. Also screened were "The Lovely Bones", "Shutter Island", "Frozen" (a unexpected hit with the audience/ someone actually passed out and had to be carried out into the lobby) and "Avatar". I'm sure there will be plenty of news and reviews to follow.
-
...a Martin Short film festival. Starting with Inner Space, that Fantastic Voyage rip-off with Dennis Quaid and Short, then the Danny Glover pair up, Pure Luck....followed by Clifford, Mumford, Jiminy Glick in LaLaWood, Captain Ron, and The Three Fugitives. (The Three Amigos would not be shown)
