Herc Has Seen The First Four Hours Of 24’s Eighth Season!!

Published at:  Dec 10, 2009 10:37:08 AM CST

SPOILER ALERT !!

I am – Hercules!!

As the folks who follow my twitters know, Fox forwarded the first four hours of “24’s” eighth season yesterday and, while it’s way too early to file a review of the episodes, I can offer some not-too-spoilery hints of what’s in store:

* 8.1 Opening titles: Kiefer Sutherland. Mary Lynn Rajskub. Anil Kapoor. Mykelti Williamson. Katee Sackhoff. Chris Diamantopoulos. John Boyd. With Freddie Prinze Jr. And Cherry Jones. Special Guest Star Elisha Cuthbert. Guest starring Bob Gunton. Nazeen Contractor. Doug Hutchison. Akbar Kurtha. Benito Martinez. Paul Wesley. Jennifer Westfeldt. Necar Zadegan. Jaime Gomez. Stefan Kapicic. Cliff M. Simon.

* Writers:
8.1 Howard Gordon & Evan Katz.
8.2 Manny Coto & Brannon Braga; story by Howard Gordon.
8.3 David Fury & Alex Gansa.
8.4 Chip Johannessen & Patrick Harbinson.

* Kapoor (the Regis Philbin of “Slumdog Millionaire”) plays Omar Hassan, the Arab Jed Bartlet, the greatest Middle East leader one could hope for.

* While Ethan Kanin (Gunton) is still around, he’s no longer President Taylor’s chief of staff.

* Jack Sack? Back!

* Jack Bauer, now in Manhattan (and just down the street from the big Hassan-Taylor disarmament negotiations), is not only not dead, his doctor “signed off” on him two weeks earlier.

* While Jack’s in perhaps better shape than we’ve ever seen, things have not gone well for Chloe O’Brien.

* After so many years of “Battlestar Galactica” it’s strange to see Sackhoff playing the Chloe role this season. She's not the girl with the gun anymore!

* CTU NY is not dissimilar to CTU LA. Still lots of glass and a prominent staircase leading to the director’s office. The biggest additions noticed in the first four hours are a jumbotron-like HD screen looming over everything and a sci-fi interrogation room.

* A piece of dialogue I loved: "Oh!! Oh!! What's the matter with you??"

* Doug Hutchison, who plays Horace Goodspeed on "Lost," stars on "24" this season. Did not recognize him without the hippie hair.

* Domenick Lombardozzi (Herc from “The Wire”) plays another Herc-like role as an NYPD patrolman.

* Very exciting opening credits for 8.4! Jurgen Prochnow and ... someone else!

Look for lots more just before the first four hours of “24’s” eighth season hits Fox Jan. 17 and 18.

Prediction: They are like the first 4 hours of every season

    by angrysnowmonkey

This show goes in circles. Each season is like the one before it. Let me guess: there is a traitor in the Whitehouse, Jack's family is in danger, and most of the characters featured in eps 1-4 will be killed for the ultimate reveal late on in the season.

    by the__natural74

Can't f'n wait for the return. I'll really miss Jon Voight this season, but hope Will Patton can come back to carry on. Voight ate up the screen every time, and his scenes with Rory Cochrane were awesome. Patton can't pull off the same Lincoln Hawk acting (over-the-top), but he's always been great at being menacing. Of course, I have no idea if he'll be back this season, I'm just assuming he'll return and we find out what Rack Bauer did to him in that interrogation room.
    Ahhhh, Rack Bauer.

    by asimov_lives

THIS MAY START OFF GOOD LIKE ALMOST EVERY YEAR, BUT THEN IT IS GOING TO TURN TO SUCKING HARD AND YOU KNOW IT. WHERE TO BEGIN ABOUT LAST YEAR: Secret underground tunnel to the Whit House; Evil Tony; an inexplicable deal for Voight's character which ultimately led to just another red herring lead, the President constantly willing to allow Americans to die for a pointless war in Africa, the President selling out her own daughter for doing the only heroic thing in the whole season. I could go on and on.

One of the better things about the post-Gou'ald episodes of Stargate. Granted, he was a Gou'ald, which might have been the reason he was interesting. But he always played a decent bastard on Stargate, so he's probably the opening villain for 24 this year. The Peter Wingfield-ish bad guy who gets killed after the first 5-10 episodes.

    by crow3711

That British baddie was badassed, Jack threatening to kill his daughter was awesome, Jack being forced to execute Ryan Chapelle was the ballsiest thing i'd ever seen at the time, and the weapon was something other than a nuke that was also credibly terrifying. I never understood why people think season 3 is weak.

    by richard_gere_raped_my_gerbil

It started out slowly but once Saunders was introduced it ramped up. The Chapelle killing was an awesome moment and wasn't that also the season where Tony was forced to turn traitor by the bad guys?Last season was also pretty good, even if it was even more unbelievable than before. Still, Tony VS Jack had some good moments and you can't beat John Voight overacting whilst chucking someone to their death.Bring on the last season!

4 hours, where everything just wheeled around that former ally of Jack. Very anti-climatic. Otherwise a strong season; hated though the final fate of Nina Myers! Remember When Tony Got Shot In The Throat?

    by crow3711

And then he was back in action barely 3 hours later. That was the truly ridiculous 24 of years past. people forget about stuff like that. It was barely buyable, yet utterly insane. Shot in the god damn throat I tell ya! And that was back when Tony wore shiny red shirts and had a goatee that made him look like Satan.

Oh, and Season 3 still had Nina, the best overall villain 24 has had. She was totally badass, you can't deny it. Except maybe Naked Mandy, whose return I DEMAND before 24 finishes its run. I want to know who the hell she is. I think she should emerge as the "big bad" one season. Fed up with being an assassin-for-hire, she takes things into her own hands and plots some shit. Naked.

    by crow3711

He blamed Jack for getting his entire squad killed if I remember, and then being forgotten about and thrown to the dogs. He wanted revenge, and he wanted money and his daughter. I thnk that was one of the least far-fetched scenarios 24 has had. Let's talk about shooting down air force one and recovering a nuclear-launch capable briefcase from the fiery wreckage. AND the President survived getting shot down. What in the fuck.

    Why season 3 is bad

    by redegiraahgnal

Mostly because Season 2 was so good that the show wll never be able to top it, but also because it resolved S2's cliffhanger by mentioning it in a sideline ("Everybody got caught."), the introduction of Chloe (a.k.a. the fucking worst character that the show ever had), the "reset button" that they pushed after a few episodes("Oh, hi, it's me, Jack. I'm undercover. Ignore what happened during the last few hours. It has nothing to do with what I'm doing now.") which led to the biggest plotholes the show had ever to face (Who were the people who chased the kid and shot Tony?), Jack got over his drug addiction by swallowing one single pill...
You see, the list is long. It had its moments of greatness, but every season had them so far. That's why we keep watching the show. Because when it's good, it's FUCKING good!

    Saunders' storyline far fetched

    by wtriker1701

Crow3711 - Sorry, if I've been misunderstood. His reasoning was sound an clear as a blue sky. But he came out of left field (like later storylines in later seasons). The story with the english guy and Nina Myers should have been the one to end that season. With another Big Bang Stadion-like finale. Then he could have gotten rid of HER as the Big Baddie (and Cutie!).

There was a great 6 hour show in Season 7 of 24. Just start watching when all the African dictators are dead.

With all the time between most seasons (7 took place four years after 6.. not sure about the rest) shouldn't Jack be about retirement age?

And I hope Cherry Jones gets killed this season. Don't know how the hell she won an Emmy. Also hope that Jonas Hodges is raised from the dead, Voight was the best thing to happen to 24 in a long time.

Didn't they say a little while back that the premiere would only be 3 hours, 2 the first night and 1 the second?

    someone answer me!

    by titus05

why does 24 feel the need to wrap up the main story by Episode 18 or 19?...in the first 2 seasons or so the main story lasted all 24 episodes and the show was really good...ever since they started coming up with a new mini story for the final 6 episodes it has always sucked big time...why can't they go back to having the main plot go for the full 24 episodes??...and why the hell did they change it to begin with?

The problem with 24 lies in its concept

    by chimpjnr

24 episodes is simply too long a season. It's not unique to 24 either. Most US shows suffer from it. I don't think they should necessarily be the 6 you typically get in the UK, but a half-way house would be great. LOST certainly benefited from being shorted and therefore more intensified.

Saunders was a squandered villain BTW. A great character with a curious taste in high-neck sweaters which has to be a little unusual in Los Angeles, no?

Actually I think LOST suffered from shorter seasons

    by dvader

Everything was so BAM BAM BAM, information and twists out the wazoo. Which is good and fine. But I miss those moments from early in the series, those times when it more about character than it was plot progression, when we were given time to spend with a character and see how they're being affected by the episode's events. We never get that on LOST anymore.

DVader - I hear you, but I also think it's because of...

    by chimpjnr

ABC's awful tendency to drag the whole season from Sept-July, and therefore punctuate the season with repeats. Speaking for myself, I just found it impossible to watch during Season 2.

    Season 3 was Great!

    by bigtuna

You guys are on crack. The last 6 hours or so on season 3 is the greatest run of episodes ever on 24. It's action packed and full of suspense. Apparently, Tony waas originally suppose to die when getting shot in the neck. Sure that was over-the-top, but so is Jack saving the world after 2 years of torture in China only to be tortured again. (I still don't get how he could have that metal rod pushed through his back and was ok in Season 6)

Willing to give first 4 hours a Chance

    by tocksick

24 has never disappointed during its first 4 hours and half the time can be absolutely thrilling. I've seen every season except the last one and there is NO way the show can top the first TWO seasons. They were so well done in every aspect from casting, editing, writing etc... that every season, including the Emmy winning 5th, will always live in their shadow. Season 3 is definitely the weakest like RedEgir pointed out and I think dropping Kate Warner, Jack's love interest in season 2 was a HUGE blunder by the writers. She had, by far, the best chemistry with Jack out of any leading lady.

Play the videogame to see season 2.5

    by jackdeth

The game basically gives you about 12-15 episodes worth of story that neatly ties up the loose ends in season 2 while introducing characters for season 3. Good stuff. Gameplay not so good.

I knew who Rack Bauer was

    by hst666

I was being minimalist in my inquiry about her appearing. I saw no mention of her in Herc's post or the comments prior to my post. I actually weent to IMDB later, although I am not sure that is 100% accurate. She is apparently in a number of episodes this season. Personally, I am not sure whether I like Rack Bauer or Chesty McFreckles better.

    by the mcpoyle clan

If this is really the last season, they have to do the series justice. But it's usually hard to judge from the first few hours, which usually bear little resemblance to what happens later (remember the Mexico foray?) Jack Sack, Rack Bauer...Naked Mandy must make a reappearance as a nod to the diehards.

Yeah, 14-17 is typically where it loses me too. Honestly, I've always felt 24 would be a much stronger show if it was in a 13-15 episode format.

    Could possibly come back

    by i am_notreal

Season 6 was such an epic fail that I bailed completely on 7, never watched a minute and probably never will. I could see myself watching the first two nights of this, or at least recording them. Maybe. I was so disappointed when the writers completely passed on two consecutive opportunities to re-invent the show (ends of season 4 and 5) & realized they really have no balls.

Season 3 was good.. and here's why:

    by echobase

    - Virus released in the hotel half way through
    - Nina is back
    - Great twist at around ep8
    - Chase was cool
    - emotional ending with Jack crying
    - Great baddy (Sauders)
    - Very tense bits with Kim, acting as Sauders' daughter

yes... there were some really bad storylines completely unrelated with the main story (Chase's daughter, president's doctor to mention a few), but thank God they stopped doing those silly unrelated stories long time ago!!
