That's so fucking awesome :D Been looking forward to Avatar since I wrote about it in my dissertation back in 2006! Thanks Merrick!!
-
The last 'Art of' book that I got was the Episode One one, a few days before it was released. I was really looking forward to that too. I hope that doesn't prove to be ironic.
-
nerds and Rush?
-
Revolutionary ? Game-changing ? Change the way you read books forever? Epic masterpiece ?
-
AVATAR will fail to achieve an erection and eyeballs nationwide will roll over, say that it's okay, and go to sleep.
-
Anyone?
-
big time.
-
big time.
-
And you can suck cock. haha.
Glad the movie is finally coming out so I don't have to hear from the haters anymore. Getting my IMAX 3D tickets today.
-
I've followed this site for years, but never felt compelled to respond to anything until now...
It's odd that the same folks who criticize Hollywood for remakes, reimaginings, do-overs, etc. also criticize Cameron for doing original work. The guy has busted his ass providing you with top-notch entertainment since the early 80's. As a small token of appreciation for the hardest working director of all time who also happens to be a geek like the rest of us, why not give him the benefit of the doubt and take a wait-and-see approach? If Avatar comes up short, then it deserves criticism. At this point, however, if it succeeds, a lot of you will look foolish... -
...I'll put a note in the subject line.
-
Dammit.
-
he was shit in T4. Nevermind the movie itself. he was just plain shite. lack of dialogue in the AVATAR trailer has me concerned that he is shit again. now I've seen the TITANS trailer and that has fuck all dialogue too. to say nothing of the lack of mechanical owls and winged steeds.
-
It's ironic that elements the haters choose to make reference to have all been massive successes in their own right. Furthermore, over the last few months I've seen a number of people who grew from starting as indifferent to now looking forward to seeing Avatar. This movie has the potential to be a milestone in the history of film and that's exciting. If the movie isn't, c'est la vie. But why hate it? If the movie becomes a big success, (which it appears it will be)generations of film going audiences will benefit from it. It might be too much for some narow minded people to grasp, but Avatar is truly an event that doesn't come along every day and is genuinely something to be excited about.
-
Oh and hey winners, I hate you.
-
hating's fun.
-
Loving is more fun.
-
Can't we save all the hate for the next BAY and/or SHYAMALAN Talkback? Seriously, I'm a AVATAR skeptic but I also have my Midnight IMAX tickets for next week. I'll actually wait to judge the film until after I've seen it.
-
because he's being fair. It's his right to be a skeptic, and who wouldn't be when you consider the majority of the films you will ever see are going to always be less than your all time favorite. But there's no hate.
-
Is uniquely consistent. I can't imagine this isn't going to be great. However, it will be different, more similar to a Pixar movie than live action, which may (or may not) become an issue.
-
That said something like "PREPARE FOR THE GREATEST ADVENTURE OF ALL TIME"
'Of the Year' I can understand but who would have the goddamn ego to proclaim this movie is going to be the greatest adventure of 'all time'?
Eat shit Fox and Cameron -
Yea T1 and T2 are incredible but so were the original Star Wars.
-
from the Greatest Movie of All Time.
-
I'm a compulsive liar too! I can't believe it!
-
We've built something for $350M and for $15 bucks we'll let you look at it for 3hrs. (After that you'll have to go.)
-
I honestly don't think the movie's going to be all that good. IT'S IN 3D! Finally, for the first time since this latest 3D trend started (and I'm a huge fan of 3D, so I've seen probably 9/10ths of the movies that have come out) I don't have to go see some dauntless, cutesy cartoons rollicking around trying to stop some real estate developer hell bent on destroying the rec center! I get to see actual explosions and guns and spaceships and things. I'll put up with a lot of crap for that.
-
What does JJ Abrams have to do with Avatar?
-
But I thought the same thing initially.
-
All you haters check out hitfix.com. The early reviews have Avatar nominated for Golden Globes in best picture and director.

Finally figured out what this movie's claim to greatness is...
by burnhollywood
Ain't the science. Ain't the plot. Sure as hell ain't the dialogue or characters.
No, what makes this movie interesting, wryly amusing and unique is...Cameron found a way to pit the "space marine" meme he created with ALIENS against LORD OF THE RINGS. It's Corporate America versus Rivendell, Dick Cheney versus Legolas, Blackwater versus The Silmarillion (complete with a magic tree...no shit), William Gibson versus JRR Tolkien. Cynicism versus Romanticism. SF versus Fantasy.
Now, THAT'S actually clever and timely, especially in this era when old-fashioned "Hard SF" is in a sort of funk, partly due to the unpredictability of predicting what happens in the post-Singularity era...as a result of that conundrum, speculative fiction has veered sideways into steampunk, philosophical discourse (Neil Stephenson and DEATH NOTE), superheroes and supernatural fantasy (TWILIGHT and its ilk).
While I doubt Cameron was out to make such a bold statement, AVATAR is actually a darkly humorous, unintentional metaphor for the state of speculative fiction onscreen and off in this era, as well as the "Clash Of Civilizations" pessimism of the Bush era slamming into the "Hope and Change" idealism of the Obama era head-on.
If this message registers subconsciously with moviegoers in a positive way (and I still hold the majority of its take will be overseas), then it has the making of a major hit. Guess we'll see. -
Watch the French interview with Cameron. He explains clearly what it's about. It's different than what you say.
-
Yes, I KNOW it's fucking different. What I'm trying to express is, what's interesting enough about this movie to
-
(oops)
...warrant seeing it in the face of the predictable message he lays out is the larger context I've outlined above. Sometimes an artist plays a violin...sometimes the violin plays him. -

This film does seem to be up there in unique settings of films. "Avatar" looks like a great work of art by Peter Jackson. Is he directing it? He didn't fail us with the "Lord of the Rings" trilogy and if I get the chance to see this movie, I don't think I will be disappointing.
-
southafricaguy? Ominus? tehcreepythinman? Continentalop? AsimovLives? lockesbrokenleg? Turd? theKRELL?Hello?
-
I have the opportunity to see Avatar in either of these formats.
Which 3D format would you recommend, and why? -
There is nothing wrong with IMAX Digital, nothing at all. But, I noticed that on the IMAX screen, if you don't sit back far enough, the image was overwhelming, and difficult to absorb. The chase sequence with the panther-like beast (I went to "Avatar Day" and saw the 15 min presentation. Twice.) was well paced, but difficult to follow. Unfortunately I was sitting too close. If you do go to IMAX try to sit further back, because the screen is about 80' high. The polarizers used in Real D supposedly allow for greater head movement, although you'd probably have to A/B roll them back-to-back. But, if you want the grandest IMAGE possible on the largest screen then see it in IMAX. Just sit farther back.

Did you miss Beowulf in 3D?
-
...thanks for the RealD/IMAX 3D info, dude.
-
seriously. most blockbuster movies that dissapoint usually have trailers that wow you, they are made for the sole purpose of producing a trailer to pack theaters. I recall not caring for the trailers for Dark Knight but was surprised how good it was. So I'm going with the weak trailer=good movie theory. I mean cumon it's Cameron!
-
and it was very underwhelming. I hope AVATAR uses better technology (the +D trailer before the movie was very impressive) but my experience is that if you do not sit right in the middle of the row, you might as well better watch a 2d version, cause the wrong angle of perspective only ruins the movie.
-
i hope AICN will post the first reviews from the geeks who watched it over there.lucky bastards.

premiere tonight in London ... we'll see what the limeys think of it...

on a different subject I checked out G.I. Joe from the library
by mr dark
I only borrowed it because of the one word review from Harry Knowles of A.I.C.N. and that one word was "awesome" ....Well I gotta tell yeah I borrowed this movie for free and I still felt cheated.. I don't know what psychoactive substances were ingested during your showing Harry but I saw this in a semi-concious state of mind and I can't believe you enjoyed this film..I'm sure I'm late to the
fuck G.I. Joe party but I was surprised that you put your name on this as "awesome".. -
The Guardian doesn't want to break their contract, but makes some coy comments about the film stating that, everyone in the audience was positive about the film, and that the film does not suck:
tinyurl.com/y8m72k6
And the SUN gives a short but glowing review saying it's theg reatest thing ever, and while the story is approached in a black/white way it's excellent and the 3D is great and the effects are great and teh action is great and it's an awesome time!
tinyurl.com/yd4ylfb -
It doesn't say much except it wasn't a train wreck. It does say it was better than expected..The fan reviews will be the most interesting I hope without to much spoilers..
-
Honestly, man...I'm getting real fucking sick of your high and mighty "self-appointed defender of AVATAR bullshit".
You're not smart, you're not witty, you're just a suck-up with a keyboard. The internet's crawling with you wretches. I honestly hope you're a studio shill so we don't see your ass again after Dec. 18.
So go fuck yourself...or since you live in Greece, go outside and hire a guy to roger you. You probably won't have to walk more than a half a block. Either way. -
I hope you choke to death on the good reviews you fucking troll.
-
(Oooh...scary name. Must impress your 300 lb. goth girlfriend over at the Starbucks...)
If you had two fucking brain cells that could work together long enough to finish the three-legged-race of a thought, you'd see I was actually COMPLIMENTING the movie above, dipshit.
Try reading somebody's posts for a change, rather than getting your information from a Turkish bum-baby. -
You are the kind of schizo scum that has nothing better to do than troll the boards..I've read your fuckin posts and you are nothing but a small little minded person of no worth or importance.
This is what must trigger your diatribes against something you haven't experienced or seen..Your just another troll who isn't even worth to be pitied..Your post to ominus with it's homosexual overtones are fitting for a person of your ilk. I hope you and your mom aren't going to get too cold out in line when you are standing outside to see this film. If you do you do get too cold just have your mommy warm you up like she does when it gets cold down there.. -
Rotten tomatoes has an artical that states - Could "Avatar" score Golden Globe nominations for Best Picture - Drama and Best Director? That's the buzz after an extremely well-received Hollywood screening.
I can't wait for this movie. I've shown the trailer and Thanatar chase to all 200 of my students and I'd say most are going to see this over Xmas break. -
as Cameron fucks you all in the ass. Enjoy!!!!!!
-
If you're feeling a headache right now, it's because you nearly gave yourself a fucking aneurysm trying to arrive at an approximation of "wit" with your limited intellect and education. Go grab another box of Twinkies and rest for a while, loser.
And stop Freudian Projecting your current relationship with that obese sow that dropped your encephalitic ass out onto others. It's unseemly, and doesn't cover for the fact that you turned up nine months after a US Navy laundry ship steamed out of port with a hold full of drunken sailors who couldn't remember where their dicks had been ten hours earlier... -
You're trying way to hard...I hope you enjoy the film
-
...I made the prediction some time ago that this movie, with its anti-imperialist message, would get a more positive reception overseas.
This morning, we have a positive review from The Guardian. And where's The Guardian? Why, in the UK. And where's the UK? Why, it's OVERSEAS.
Stay awake and you might learn something, people. -
I will see you in line..
-
The line to screw your mama..
-
Not anywhere near as long as the line for a cut-rate knob-polishing that snakes around the corner of a nearby alley and ends in your mouth.
-
Might give AVATAR a run for its money, revenue-wise.
-
Imagine if you put all that energy into improving your life instead of insulting strangers who are looking froward to seeing a movie that hasn't been released yet? Imagine the possibilities.
-
I mean, we lost Lucas, we lost Speilberg. They've obviously lost there muse (okay, maybe not the Berg. There's still a chance). It's just nice to know, our "last hope" didn't drop the ball. Half the haters (the fanatical ones, praying for its' failure) i don't get but the other half? They were just scared that we were going to get another TPM or Krystal Skull. I get that. I really do. We've all been burned alot this decade, haven't we? So thanks Big Jim (if the early reviews are any indication) for not filing down your rough edges.
-
I've been insulted by a moron...

What, I might not be collecting a paycheck from your present employers at Taco Bell? DONE!

Which moron? Did your mom finally wake up from her ongoing hangover long enough to diss you again?

And for the record, I'm fully on board the AVATAR train...
by burnhollywood
Reason being, Oscar's expanding its Best Picture roster from five movies to ten, and after all the groaning over last year's genre snub of THE DARK KNIGHT, the inclusion of a fantasy/SF flick is nearly certain.
Ugly rumors are circulating that the Academy might feel obligated to shoehorn in that FPOS STAR TREK (DISTRICT 9 and MOON are actually considered dark horses, because the Academy doesn't give a shit about shoestring productions), in lieu of any other choices, so-o-o-o...
FOR THE LOVE OF GOD, SEE AVATAR! Better Cameron on the Oscar stage any day of the week than those ghouls Orci and Kurtzman! MAKE HIM "KING OF THE WORLD" AGAIN! -
Well now everyone can see you for what you are and thats a troll..I'm sure you will be one among the many who will even upon seeing this film and probably enjoying it, still call it a disaster..You should seek help..

Back in August, I attended the Avatar 3-D IMAX 15 minutes of footage simply as something to kill the time before seeing INGLOURIOUS BASTERDS that night. Low and behold, AVATAR: 3-D IMAX was fucking AMAZING for all 15 minutes and I simply cannot wait for this next week! Fuck the Haters! I've never seen anything like it before. See you at the movies next week!!
-
with just a week to go.
-
Tsk. Tsk. That attitude will never get you out of your moms' basement.
-
You are one sad, neurotic little jerk-off, you know that? A fucking adult turns up on a Talkback and says that while he has some reservations about plot elements, he thinks the movie occupies a worthy niche in movie history...and actually explains that compliment.
But that's not good enough. No, you've got to be some wild-eyed fucking Cameron fanatic, who thinks it's going to be "the bestest movie ever, ever, ever!!!" or some mouthy little worm like you or ominus is going to start wailing "troll!" or "hater!"
So fuck you both. I hope it is good...in fact, I hope it's so fucking great, your fat ass chokes on the tenth hot dog you're forcing down your throat, and the last thing you see is a big blue Na'vi face beaming down on you like Lincoln's head on Mt. Rushmore as your fat carcass collapses.
It's probably the way you wanted to go, anyway. -
My "attitude" got my balls on your sister's chin, so don't knock it...
-
Review just gone up. Embargo must have been lifted.
-
Where is this adult you talk so highly of..You sir are a troll plain and simple..Your bandwagon jumping now that good word of mouth is coming out is typical..It will be the same action as many who wished this movie to be a failure .. I don't know what kind of people wish failure upon something that declares itself to be something new and game changing.I would think it is the most backwards ass kind of person that there could possibly be..If you don't like film what the fuck are you doing here?
-
BurnHollywood I hope your assholes on fire..Your mother got five stars in a T.J. whorehouse the last time your sister took me there..

Verdict
It’s been twelve years since Titanic, but the King of the World has returned with a flawed but fantastic tour de force that, taken on its merits as a film, especially in two dimensions, warrants four stars. However, if you can wrap a pair of 3D glasses round your peepers, this becomes a transcendent, full-on five-star experience that's the closest we'll ever come to setting foot on a strange new world. Just don’t leave it so long next time, eh, Jim?
Oh yeah ..Thats pretty much what I was wanting out of this.. -
No one believed us when we said the Avatar day footage was something to behold. Heck most people here have been doing nothing but claiming Avatar will be awful, a flop, or that it just doesn't interest them. I'll admit the last complaint could be valid, cause to each his own...but to doubt Jim Cameron would deliver a great movie? C'mon people!
I'm gonna love seeing douches like Trannyformers and Retard Nerd show themselves around here after their "guarantees" fall flat. Leave em with a nice quote...
"The movie is 161 minutes and flies by in a rush. Repeat business? You bet. "Titanic"-level business? That level may never be reached again, but Fox will see more than enough grosses worldwide to cover its bet on Cameron. " -
Nothing better to do in life..Nothing more to accomplish..
Lost the positive footing..I guess thats all they have left..Find something or someone to hate..pity the poor trolls..
I am looking forward to a great film and really even though I hate the word a "moviegoing event".I had faith in James Cameron to deliver this time around and it sounds like he did..
In spades.. -
Okay, let's try it this way...rather than buzzing around my dick like the irritating gnat you are, trying to keep up outside your weight class, show me where I was "trolling", cockbreath.
Go ahead...show me. I'm waiting. -
The only question is: How will Cameron ever top this?
-
you already forget all the shit you've slung..Fuck off and die..
-
"So I just got back from a movie. It was pretty great…if by pretty great I mean OMFGHOLYFUCKINGSHITOMGOMGOMG. Because that’s what it was."
-
"Avatar is a hugely rewarding experience: rich, soulful and exciting in the way that only comes from seeing a master artist at work."
-
Film is supposedly amazing.
-
"The last forty minutes, in which Cameron uncorks the action and shows all the young pretenders – the Bays and the Emmerichs and the Von Triers (?!) – how it’s done. The human attack on Pandora and the subsequent fightback, led by Avatar-Jake, is a largely sustained setpiece of quite staggering scale, imagination and emotion that manages to compress both the truly epic – a human attack on a Na’vi landmark that recalls 9/11 in its devastating imagery – and the thrillingly intimate, as Jake finally faces off against the excellent Stephen Lang’s Quaritch."
-
I would seriuosly buy you a ticket to a Imax sceening of Avatar..Just to hear what you thought of it..Since I can't hand you a ticket I really will look back into the message boards to look for your thoughts on this film after it opens...I hope you like it.. It was real nice chatting with you today..

Best Picture noms for Cameron. And more.

I can't stop grinning. Seriously. The reviews make it sound like he not only will quiet the doubters, but has shoved it in their teeth and made them look stupid.

awesome.

BWAHAHAHAHAHA! I knew it.
Buh-bye. -
All hail our lord and saviour JC!!!
-
FIVE OUT OF FIVE STARS!!!!!!!
-
My whole mood has changed. Hooray for Cameron. Our Savior. I'm already thinking of the silly dance number they'll do at the oscars for "I See You." Will the dancers all be painted blue? I truly hope it's Titanic all over again. Cameron makes movies fun and exciting again.
-
I'm so sorry for you Burn. The movie apparently rocks. I pity your pettiness and bile. I really do.
-
He's now King of the Universe.
-
If you have the review post it in here please
-
Aint-it-motherfucking-slow-news. We get "updates" for months on the most inane bullshit surrounding this movie and then on the night when the critics explode in praise and geeks crash websites... we've got nothing. This site is so frequently a joke. I want a damn dedicated thread to gloat about the fact that CAMERON OWNED EVERY FUCKING ONE OF THE WORTHLESS TROLLS YET AGAIN! That is all.
-
Big Jim didn't loose his mind like the other big boys (speilberg, Lucas). The biggest reason I want to see this, I think; is because this is really the first Cameron film that heavily incorporates the organic. All of his other films have taken place in highly technological environments (Deepcore in The Abyss, the colonists settlement in Aliens, Modern and Future LA in Terminator). That's a pretty big departure for that guy and it sounds like he nailed it.
-
Ha! Ha! See what I did there?
-
What a line "The only question is: How will Cameron ever top this?"
-
What "pettiness" and "bile", pray tell? When I said the movie was "clever and timely" above?
Oh, that's right...I got an advance copy LAST NIGHT and saw I was wrong, right?
Seeing as mr dark ducked out, maybe you'd care to answer where my "bile" was "petty". Knock yourself out, junior. -
Every single post you've put up. The personal attacks on everyone that doesn't agree with you, little man.
-
I pity you. Chin up, Burn. Chin up.
-
Though I should have got the advanced ticket
-
Bottom Line: A titanic entertainment -- movie magic is back!
A dozen years later, James Cameron has proven his point: He is king of the world.
As commander-in-chief of an army of visual-effects technicians, creature designers, motion-capture mavens, stunt performers, dancers, actors and music and sound magicians, he brings science-fiction movies into the 21st century with the jaw-dropping wonder that is "Avatar." And he did it almost from scratch.
There is no underlying novel or myth to generate his story. He certainly draws deeply on Westerns, going back to "The Vanishing American" and, in particular, "Dances With Wolves." And the American tragedy in Vietnam informs much of his story. But then all great stories build on the past ( "Avatar" premiered Thursday in London).
After writing this story many years ago, he discovered that the technology he needed to make it happen did not exist. So, he went out and created it in collaboration with the best effects minds in the business. This is motion capture brought to a new high where every detail of the actors' performances gets preserved in the final CG character as they appear on the screen. Yes, those eyes are no longer dead holes but big and expressive, almost dominating the wide and long alien faces.
The movie is 161 minutes and flies by in a rush. Repeat business? You bet. "Titanic"-level business? That level may never be reached again, but Fox will see more than enough grosses worldwide to cover its bet on Cameron.
But let's cut to the chase: A fully believable, flesh-and-blood (albeit not human flesh and blood) romance is the beating heart of "Avatar." Cameron has never made a movie just to show off visual pyrotechnics: Every bit of technology in "Avatar" serves the greater purpose of a deeply felt love story (watch the trailer here).
The story takes place in 2154, three decades after a multinational corporation has established a mining colony on Pandora, a planet light years from Earth. A toxic environment and hostile natives -- one corporate apparatchik calls the locals "blue monkeys" -- forces the conglom to engage with Pandora by proxy. Humans dwell in oxygen-drenched cocoons but move out into mines or to confront the planet's hostile creatures in hugely fortified armor and robotics or -- as avatars.
The protagonist, Jake Sully (Sam Worthington), is a crippled former Marine who takes his late twin brother's place in the avatar program, a sort of bone thrown to the scientific community by the corporation in hopes that the study of Pandora and its population might create a more peaceful planet.
Without any training, Jake suddenly must learn how to link his consciousness to an avatar, a remotely controlled biological body that mixes human DNA with that of the native population, the Na'vi. Since he is incautious and overly curious, he immediately rushes into the fresh air -- to a native -- to throw open Pandora's many boxes.
What a glory Cameron has created for Jake to romp in, all in a crisp 3D realism. It's every fairy tale about flying dragons, magic plants, weirdly hypnotic creepy-crawlies and feral dogs rolled up into a rain forest with a highly advanced spiritual design. It seems -- although the scientists led by Sigourney Weaver's top doc have barely scratched the surface -- a flow of energy ripples through the roots of trees and the spores of the plants, which the Na'vi know how to tap into.
The center of life is a holy tree where tribal memories and the wisdom of their ancestors is theirs for the asking. This is what the humans want to strip mine.
Jake manages to get taken in by one tribe where a powerful, Amazonian named Neytiri (Zoe Saldana) takes him under her wing to teach him how to live in the forest, speak the language and honor the traditions of nature. Yes, they fall in love but Cameron has never been a sentimentalist: He makes it tough on his love birds.
They must overcome obstacles and learn each other's heart. The Na'vi have a saying, "I see you," which goes beyond the visual. It means I see into you and know your heart.
In his months with the Na'vi, Jake experiences their life as the "true world" and that inside his crippled body locked in a coffin-like transponding device, where he can control his avatar, is as the "dream." The switch to the other side is gradual for his body remains with the human colony while his consciousness is sometimes elsewhere.
He provides solid intelligence about the Na'vi defensive capabilities to Col. Miles Quaritch (Stephen Lang), the ramrod head of security for the mining consortium and the movie's villain. But as Jake comes to see things through Neytiri's eyes, he hopes to establish enough trust between the humans and the natives to negotiate a peace. But the corporation wants the land the Na'vi occupy for its valuable raw material so the Colonel sees no purpose in this.
The battle for Pandora occupies much of the final third of the film. The planet's animal life -- the creatures of the ground and air -- give battle along with the Na'vi, but they come up against projectiles, bombs and armor that seemingly will be their ruin.
As with everything in "Avatar," Cameron has coolly thought things through. With every visual tool he can muster, he takes viewers through the battle like a master tactician, demonstrating how every turn in the fight, every valiant death or cowardly act, changes its course. The screen is alive with more action and the soundtrack pops with more robust music than any dozen sci-fi shoot-'em-ups you care to mention (watch the "Avatar" video game trailer here).
In years of development and four years of production no detail in the pic is unimportant. Cameron's collaborators excel beginning with the actors. Whether in human shape or as natives, they all bring terrific vitality to their roles.
Mauro Fiore's cinematography is dazzling as it melts all the visual elements into a science-fiction whole. You believe in Pandora. Rick Carter and Robert Stromberg's design brings Cameron's screenplay to life with disarming ease.
James Horner's score never intrudes but subtlety eggs the action on while the editing attributed to Cameron, Stephen Rivkin and John Refoua maintains a breathless pace that exhilarates rather than fatigues. Not a minute is wasted; there is no down time.
The only question is: How will Cameron ever top this?

I've skipped over all the Pixar stuff and the two Zemeckis films so I've saved this one for my first 3-D experience. Hell, I think the last 3-D movie I saw was Jaws 3-D. This just may be a little better.

They've been a day or two late on all the AVATAR post.
-
On the latest news, not the guys running this site.
-
Don't bother with college, schoolboy...it drives professors apeshit when you generalize and don't cite your evidence.
I posted a critique FAR above in which I said AVATAR's claim to greatness is its "SF versus fantasy" meme. ominus (who's been calling me a troll for weeks now because I don't think Cameron is Jesus and this movie will make CITIZEN KANE look like PLAN 9) doesn't address anything I said, just calls me a "troll", so I went medieval on his ass...which he deserves. mr dark sees fit to involve himself without reading what I wrote, so he gets the same treatment. Then you involve yourself with the same fucking brainless meddling.
You're just being pissy because you see I fight back, that's all. You're trying to play toady and getting your sour little face bloodied. Boo hoo. -
Everyone knows you for a troll. The "evidence" is in every single post you've put forth. There is not one single person here who doesn't think that about you. If you can't see that, then you're obviously in denial and having the last word with everyone doesn't mean "you win" but if you want to think that, go right ahead. Ask yourself this? Why does it bother you so much that other people are excited for this? What do you care?
-
I love you, man. :).
-
I'm still here you douchebag..I just wouldn't take the time to complie your self absorbed meanderings and countless attempts at putting down the people who actually want this film to succeed. so eat it hard
motherfucker..Buck up and read the reviews little man so you can see you are now in the minority.. -
Oh, by the way, did you hear? Avatar rocks! I don't know if you heard about that or not. Ha! Ha!

Tag team dude. Finish him. I'm leaving work now.

I will be in line opening night at the Magic Johnson Theaters in Compton, Ca. .. Just yell out for Mr. Dark and ask for your free ticket I'll be waiting to meet and greet you..

If Cinemas were Churches, Cameron delivers one helluva sermon.

Is because the audience just had their eyeballs FUCKED! So it's taking them awhile to adjust enough to see their laptops and type something coherant.

every commercial i see for this movie makes me cringe. the navi look stupid as hell. and the mechs look like they were borrowed from the matrix 3. 500 million... for this?

So sad for you.

abyss: cheesy and way to long. not enough action. bad story. worst. ending. ever.
T2: cheesy. made for kids. arnold is the good guy. the true death of the terminator franchise.

Jurassic Park 3; MIB 2; The Core; Hulk; Terminator 3; Timeline(!?!); Paycheck; Butterfly Effect; Transformers; Beowulf; The Golden Compass; At least he hated some really justifiable dreck: Eragon, AvP, AvP:R, Catwoman, I Robot; but I will look to others for opinions I trust about Avatar.... -
Troll harder.

Jeez, the Variety guy is worse than the Hollywood Reporter guy..
by madeyemongo
Check out what *he* liked: Surrogates, 9, Knowing (!!!), Mars Attacks, The Day After Tomorrow, The Core, Terminator 3, Bicentennial Man....I'll cut him some slack for slagging Daredevil, Star Wars Episode I, and Solaris(2002); but I don't trust his taste in Sci-Fi movies either....
-
Everyone's entitled to their opinion; I never said their reviews were invalid, I said based on what they've reviewed in the past I doubt I'll trust their opinion. All you avatards talking about how great the movie will be are no better than those that slag it. Get out of your mom's basement and be a more discerning consumer. You are the reason hollywood serves up mostly pap.
-
has ever criticized a movie. oh, no. all the talkbackers on this site only ever make positive comments. hhhmmm. i get it. if someone criticizes a movie that you dont like, then thats ok. if someone criticizes a movie you do like, then he's a troll.
oh, and since when do you have to have made a movie to criticize a movie? thats retarded logic. -

"Tag team"?! HAHAHAHAHAHA! Is that what they call domestic partnerships in California, now?
You're copping out like a total pussy. Same as mr dark (lowercase, 'cause I guess he's a lesbian in a fat boy's body).
Rather than bark like a couple of bitches harmonizing, cite my "trolling" passage, loudmouths. I'm still waiting. -
straw man? check. Wildly nonsensical argument? Check. I merely pointed out that the reviews and buzz so far are OVERWHELMINGLY positive. Based on that, the director, and what I've seen so far I would tend to believe that I will in fact like this movie. And to be fair, you didn't actually say anything, you just trolled and implied that the positive reviews didn't matter, thereby also implying that the movie, despite the overwhelming positive reception it has received will suck. I'm starting my analysis of this movie from a rational and informed position and you are being a cut rate troll. Are we done here?
-
who is this movie made for? what is the target audience? i cant figure it out. it just looks like one big toy commercial. so, i guess its a kids movie.
-
chinese democracy was shit
-
the "buzz" on this film is: meh. people are dis-interested. every normal person i know and work with has no interest in this movie at all. and on this site, i have seen the opinion become more and more negative as the movie gets closer. i don't know, maybe if this had come out in the summer, people would have looked at it as "big, dumb, summer fun". like transformers 2.
-
you stupid cum swigging goat fuckers. Cling to your hatred! Cliiiiiiinggggg!

Ash sad. Baby made pee pee in diapers. Oh poor little baby Ash, baby needs its bottle.
Waaa baby crying baby Ash always sad. Hahaha Ash you little negative whining bitch boy. "Avatar sucks, Chinese Democracy is shit, I am a pimple faced baby googoogagaga" - says Ash the puss. -

-
Chinese Demcracy IS NOT a masterpiece. Appetite is a masterpiece, The Wall, Abbey Road, Master Of Puppets, Pet Sounds, Synchronicity, Disintegration, The Joshua Tree are a few examples of masterpieces. Hell, gnr LIES was better than Chinese Democracy. ANd don't get me wrong, I like it, I may actually like it better than Use Your Illusion, maybe. But no one, trust me NO ONE will ever be screaming out to hear "This I Love" or TWAT twenty years from now. No One will be hoping they play IRS. Never Ever.
-
kinda have their heads up their asses. they cant see reality. or maybe its camerons cock in their eyes. avatar is the new Battlefield Earth.
-
projects his feelings onto others and informs himself based on his "coworkers." Meanwhile, in the real world "search volume for Avatar at this stage—one week before release—is about the same as the count for Wolverine, a movie that earned $87 million on its opening weekend." Which of course doesn't take into account the high 3D premium (about 40%) and the crazy amount of buzz that's about to drop based on this premiere and the reviews. I'm picturing some commercials with some of these quotes basically saying this is the hottest shit ever to happen (hyperbole of course) but nonetheless what the early reviews have said. No, this movie will do incredibly well in worldwide box office.
-
I'm glad you believe that you'll enjoy this movie. That itself makes it more likely that you will, so congrats, I'm sure you'll have a great experience. However. your pejorative use of "troll" in reference to my posts noting that reviews being cited on this TB as "evidence" that avatar is a masterpiece are from individuals with a checkered history in picking "good" sci-fi/fantasy films is misplaced. BTW, you have no "analysis" of the movie, since you haven't seen it yourself. You *think* you're analyzing a movie but you, like all other fans here have already made up your mind. It's called cognitive dissonance, look it up.

Brilliant marketing strategy premiering it in London, BTW...
by burnhollywood
As I predicted, its reception overseas was almost certain to be more positive than in the "corporate culture" US, where its anti-business message will probably generate more than a few mixed reviews...but not as mixed as they might be if the Brits weren't already on record as saying they loved it.
Clearly, the studio is hedging on major international business. Smart bet. -
A moment ago you were telling us to see all the negativity on geek sites... now that a supposedly geek site like RT is giving the film positive reviews, it's no longer valid? Which is it? Can't you at least be consistant in your idiocy?
-
don't lie to yourself. you know it to be true.
-
Ash, it's like you're standing on the tracks and you've heard that some guy built a $300M train headed right for you. But, you think the guy who built the train doesn't know what he's doing and you're betting it'll come off the tracks. Right. In about seven days you're going to look like Wile E. coyote.
-
straw man? check. Putting words in my mouth? check. Not knowing what cognitive dissonance means? check.
Here is what I said "Based on that, the director, and what I've seen so far I would tend to believe that I will in fact like this movie." Because I haven't seen the movie doesn't mean that I can't make rational and informed decisions on whether or not I probably will or probably will not like it. It is the same thing we all do when deciding to see the movie. For the record, cognitive dissonance occurs when one tries to reconcile two contradictory realities; one real and one imagined. The reviews would have to be negative for me to have cognitive dissonance. You on the other hand are discounting the positive reviews in order to hold on to your pre-conception that the movie must suck. That is textbook. Are we done here? -
I do go to GNR sites. Like I said I'm a fan and I like the album okay and I do not begrudge you your opinion. But do you really think it's as good as Appetite? This is important to me because Axl spent around 17 years making it. Radiohead have had their entire career in that timespan. I think Chinese Democracy appeals to a very, very, narrow group of super die hard axl fans which is fine by me, but I assure you that WAS NOT axl's intention. Also, I'll definitely be seeing guns if Axl works up the courage to tour the US. Go Cameron!!
-
your comment is incomprehensible and wrong. you should actually read my posts before you comment on them. back to school, lad...
-
Couldn't the same argument that you just made against Hatershate, be made by your premature negativity or cynicism.
Think its unlreastic for people not to have a view before seeing a movie, based on the director, the previes etc, experiences with other movies, its very natural.
Both sides though would seem to overreact to early reviews, people who are positive are listening to so far a relatively small population, where negative people/haters are trying to find problems with the reviewers that they come across as obsessive to their beliefs. I am guilty of this as most people are
But for me what I find worse is when you have a movie like Star Trek, or Dark Knight that has such a high critical consensus (see rottentomatoes , metacritic) and still you get haters coming out with rediculous comments about both, that really demonstrates nerd rage more than a critical mind. -
RT a geek site he says. Facts are bullshit he says. Stupid troll is stupid.
-
and its broken. im still here.
-
arrogant: check. douchebag: check. wrong: check
are we done here? (lame catch phrase: check) -
so the positive word of mouth could have an entire week to increase the hype to make for a record breaking opening weekend in North America.
-
This talkback is all you have isn't it? I'm so sorry for you, man. Oh, hey. Did you hear about Avatar? Apparently it fucking rocks! you heard though, right? Also, I lick your tears. Mmmmmm. Yummy.
-
"rotten tomatoes does not mean shit
" - if you truly don't under that site or something like metacritic, then sorry your comments really aren't of any critical value and you completely sound like a troll. -
I bet Big Jim is too.
-
bravo. Very well constructed. Trollometer says 2/10.
-
i make up my own mind. avatar looks stupid.
-
That's why you're regarded as a mornon. The actual production cost is much less. You don't include marketing numbers when you calculate how much it actually cost to build.
-
don't see it. I don't give a flying fuck. But for future reference, don't project your feelings onto the world and insist that, despite all evidence to the contrary, really this movie sucks and is going to tank. It really just makes you look like a veeeerrrry retarded troll.
-
avatar in your back yards? who wears the blue paint and taped on tail? who is the mech made out of cardboard?
-
You and your checklists are kinda funny. No straw man here, no words in your mouth either; I'm not even sure where that comes from. Your statement re: cognitive dissonance is very telling also; you ignore the case that, should the movie actually suck (or at any rate should a significant body of opinion/reviews suggest it), it seems likely that you're primed at this point to ignore it--which was my point about CD to begin with. So good one, ignoring the potential for CD in yourself but projecting it on me. Personally, I have no pre-conception that the movie must suck--but I am suspicious given what I've seen so far, like many people. But you seem to have made up your mind, so go have a ball at avatar, you're clearly going to have a good time. As to whether we're "done here"...I'll leave that to you and your checklist.
-
I can't wait to see how they justify, it's massive opening weekend.
-
It looks stupid *TO YOU*. That's the important part. And since you are clearly an idiot, based on countless other posts you've made, you opinion means less than nothing.
-
We are talking about critical opinion here, not public in the case of reviews, thats their job.
Let me guess you think the world is only 6,000 years old ? -
negative opinions are not allowed here? since when?
-
Even if you honestly despise this movie, why the fuck are you subjecting yourself to these accurate insults. Have some dignity and call it a day. Christ. Do you like getting your ass kicked or what?
-
then the following weekend is a very small fraction of opening weekend because of negative word of mouth. can you say Watchmen?
-
but the way you dismiss things like critical reviews, rottentomatoes etc doesn't paint a good picture of a critical open mind, paints a picture of stubbornness.
-
is an oxymoron. no such thing.
-
than anyone at this site. and I am telling you that this movie is crap.
-
really small town and an only child?
-
then it will all start making sense.
I really hope you are a couple of guys drinking beers and trolling. If you aren't trolling and are serious, I really hope you are sterile. -
You seem like a reasonable dude unlike Ash. To be fair though, I was anticipating this movie but also very anxious that it might simply not work. I love 3d technology and Cameron, but I was honestly only somewhat looking forward to this before tonight. Again, it just seemed like he might not be able to pull this off. But I've been reading what's been coming out, and now I'm trying to lower my expectations. Honestly, I've NEVER seen reviews like this. Over and over people are saying it is simply amazing and on a different level (seen in 3d) and that the story is actually pretty decent. I keep seeing words like "amazing" "game changing" "spectacle" "the future of cinema", comparing it to the original King Kong. I mean over the top effusive reviews. So yeah, at this point I'm now trying to lower my expectations, because that can't really be true right?
-
did it fail because of too much blue penis? will avatar fail for the same reason?
-
You're one of those guys who likes to pick fights online. Lame. People shouldn't waste their time with you because you'll never give this film a chance.
-
the movie. but, ultimately it was weak. i still try to watch it once and a while. and its still week. hhhmmm. big budget epic sized scifi movie that ultimately lets you down? sounds familiar...

No Ash_Williams, you learn to read, especially before you post!
by johnno
One minute you're pointing out all the supposed 'negativity' on talkback posts for the film (50% of the negativity being posts by youyou). Talkbacks being AICN, a geek website. Then you see RT giving out positive reviews. Then you label RT a geek website so as to discredit it. Which cotradicts your opinion earlier. You say if the geeks don't care then the film is doomed, then later you say you have no idea who Cameron is making this film for... You're all over the place. You don't even know what you're saying anymore. You're either that stupid or you're trolling because you have nothing better to do.
So maybe take some self help books on how to think ahead, so as to not contradict yourself! But clearly reading comprehension is not one of your strong points. And for that matter, neither is thinking... -
until i started seeing more and more of the trailors. then i felt let down from all the hype.
-
once again. learn to read. you misquoted me horribly and your argument makes no sense. sorry. try again.

Well, now it is confirmed: you are a loser. You're stoned, and you're wasting your pot by trolling an internet forum? Go do something...watch something...listen to something. Jesus, what a fucking waste. Hopefully it's just shit from some ghetto brick.
-
Actually, I'm quite sure that the reviews are correct re: the technological implications for movies going forward; I suspect this movie will be viewed as "game changing" in the same way that Jurassic Park was, by introducing a level of "realistic" cgi that people hadn't seen before. JP held the box office record for a fair while too. Of course...looking at JP in retrospect, it has its moments but (I think) as a movie and a story it doesn't hold up over time and/or repeated viewings. For me, I'm skeptical of avatar's seemingly tired plot line, but I have no doubt the technology it's introducing will have a major impact on how future movies (blockbusters at least) are made. I thought George Lucas said the biggest constraint for him in making the movies he wanted to make was having to deal with actors, and he wanted to get to the point where he could simply animate whatever he wanted. Well, he may be getting his wish.
-
at least partially. I don't think the reviews were to the same level even for jurassic park. And truly great CGI/3D in a blockbuster might move the ball forward in a way that CG alone does not. For example T2/Abyss had amazing CG even before JP. I don't doubt that Avatar probably will not hold up over time. Just like the orginal King Kong does not (I'm sorry it just doesn't.. technology matters.) But I think your comparison to JP might be apt. I remember sitting in the theater being amazed. I think with such an immersive 3D experience Avatar could be an even greater *experience*. As I said, I happen to be a fan of 3D for the right movies. In that sense, I'm thinking the movie might not be eternal or important in the way a Kubrick movie is, but I'm also thinking I just might have the best time I've had sitting in a big theater in long, long time. I hope so. The reviews have got me stoked, because they seem to be saying what I hoped for in my wildest dreams: story actually pretty engaging and draws you in and the technology immerses you in a very special movie going experience.
-
Looks like your vain hopes of Avatar bombing are going about as limp as your tiny dick in the presence of a woman. You know what? I think I was wrong about my predictions concernign Avatar's box office gross. I don't think Avatar will make $700 m domestic/$1.5 b worldwide anymore. I actually think it will now be the first movie to crack $1 billion domestic and $2 billion worldwide! Zing!! and Ker-ching!!
-
in that Avatar will be a technical marvel that will probably not hold up over time. JP wasn't even that satisfying when it came out - it had a few great set pieces, but it was clearly a rushed affair, with Spielberg hurrying the production so he could get cracking on Schindler's list. And it began the trend of Spielberg ending his films weakly, with that random ending where they just drive off. Also, very bland characters for the most part. Compare that to T2 a few years earlier, which was a satisfying and complete movie quite apart from the groundbreaking FX, with rock solid structure and characters. Ditto The Abyss, which holds up the best out of all the summer blockbusters of 89, even though it ws the least successful at the time. I think Avatar will be no different - typically Cameronian solid and timeless storytelling coupled with stunning effects. It will still work as an emotional tale and a killer action movie long after its tech lustre has faded, same as T2.
-
I can't picture a scenario where this cracks $1 billion domestic. That's crazy talk. BUT $1.5-2 billion worldwide total could happen. I mean shit, the new Ice Age banked nearly $700 million foreign based mostly on the strength of 3D. Avatar very well could do twice that business or more.
-
but both T2 and the Abyss are almost entirely not CG. Avatar is all CG. I fully expect that it will look silly in 5 or 10 or 20 years. That's just the nature of things. But based on these reviews I'm hoping for an incredible movie going experience. I dont particularly care if it holds up to a viewing at home 10 years later, to be honest.

In a world where Transformers 2 grossed over
by turd_has_risen_from_the_grave
$400m, I see no reason why a genuine event movie like Avatar should not vastly exceed it. If you take Titanic's gross and adjust for inflation, it would be around $900m+. Well, I expect Avatar to beat Titanic. And given the higher premiums of 3D and IMAX tickets (coupled with an unusually long IMAX run), I say it's do-able. There may very well be IMAX 3D re-releases annually for the next few years (until 3D becomes a home theater staple) as well.
-
I trust Cameron over that shit director any day.
-
after time they look out dated. It means things have improved.
-
However, how much better can CG get? I'm sure it will improve even further with ever more detailed mo-cap work and Cameron's plans to increase the frame rate to 48fps in his future movies (thus making animation even more fluid and natural). But if something is on the cusp of photo-realism or crosses the uncanny valley already, then it may just be a difference by degrees. Can you get more real than real? Is there a point where the eye simply can't perceive any more realism/detail and just plateaus out?
-
we are not even close to *truly* photo real yet IMO. Don't get me wrong, some of the tight shots in this with the right lighting look absolutely mind blowing. BUT those well lit wide shots are instantly, immediately processed to my brain as CG. This movie will get dated, but like I said... i don't really care.
-
You ask a great question in regards to "Can you get more real than real?" I think you can, when you look back to the evolution of comic book art. Remember when the characters/heroes in the late 70's were all drawn life like, with detailed muscles, etc and then it evolved into a newer style, especially with the Hulk, where his image seemed more like an extension of his personality, than an anatomically correct being. CG might allow for that sort of evolution with human/cg character growth.
-
The effects in many of the scenes cannot be properly judged on a computer monitor but must be seen on a large screen and preferably in 3D, which tricks the eye even further (though it should look good in 2D also). Bear in mind that I'm not just talking about the na'vi here, but also the jungle environments/water, all of which are absolutely photoreal. Not to mention the CGI humans lie many close up shots of Colonel Quaritch in his amp suit (yes, they are entirely CG). Many of the shots in the released featurettes and trailers have also been unfinished. The true litmus test will be the final film, though.
-
I could see that stylized evolution possibly coming into play with Battle Angel, should it ever get made, since it features a synthetic human girl who changes bodies across the span of the story that reflect her growth and personality.
-
but I just tend to think we're not at the end of history on anything. B/c our frame of reference is only very, very good CG, we can't know what we'll think when 100% photo real is around. The difference might objectively seem slight, but to some kid born 20 years from now, this movie will look like a cartoon. Moving forward, people will not be accustomed to anything looking less than 100% real. That's why this movie will get dated. But that's all in the future and my eyeballs will get fucked next week.
-
He is just trying to push buttons. You are probably helping him fill some kind of fucking parasitic ego where he thinks he needs to suck off other people. He is a loser. a Zero point Zero. He doesn't think Avatar sucks. He is just trying to fuck with everyone. There is no way is as Dee Dee Dee retarded as he seems.
-
"Moving forward, people will not be accustomed to anything looking less than 100% real. That's why this movie will get dated. But that's all in the future and my eyeballs will get fucked next week."
The Dinos in JP 1 still look damn good. Soul Calibur on the Dreamcast still looks damn good. My point. Its all in the execution. -

A new bar is set and someone else will have to jump it..It's a good thing when this kind of hype is met with someone who can back it up.
James Cameron should be proud for what seems to be a gamble that paid off with his vision..I saw the 16 mins. in 3-d at a liemax showing twice and I knew after seeing what I did that we were in for something special..I can't wait to see this next week in it's entirety..A shout out to all the people who kept the faith on this and Turd , Ominus, Hatershate, see you guys in line.. -
SPECTACULAR. The review claims that it's better than anything Cameron has ever done.

retarded. You should have seen his emotional outburst/rant in the other talkback where he is proud of liking T4 and Gijoe, thinks JJ Abrahms is the new Spielberg, Cameron is Hack (he still does nt understand what the word means), and that Sommers, Mcg etc...are all better than Cameron. It was a truly spectacular moment of showing what a complete mental patient he is....

Dude, your right. I am attatched to you. I find your moronic imaturity and blatant denial of facts absolutely fascinating. It's like the fat lady at the beach. It's a fucking frightening sight but you just can't turn away from the trainwreck. So yeah, my man. Stick around. We gonna be pals. Avatar opens real soon, Burney. We gonna have us some fun. :)

Well, one things for sure. It's going to be damn entertaining. So sit back and enjoy. It's like the preshow before the main event.
-
So, you're openly stating that you're going to stalk me? Is that it?
Bring it on, bitch. :-D -
Hey, man. Did you see those reviews? Pretty great, huh? I mean, you read them right?
-
You made a little smiley fice just like me. cool.

It has an open mouth. That's just how i want you Burney. On your knees of course, while I watch that KICK ASS AVATAR MOVIE.
