PRINCESS AND THE FROG this Saturday at 1pm at Alamo South??? TOO LATE!
Hey folks, Harry here... I gave the majority of the tickets to this event to my Saturday Morning Kids Club that I founded with the Drafthouse for Kids. But I decided to hold back 40 tickets. 40 tickets for your Disney Princess loving asses! That's right. You know who you are. You're a redblooded Austonian Geek that has a soft spot for Disney 2D animated Princess stories! You can still stand as a Man or a Woman and shrink down to 7 years old. You'll begin going a little swoony when you see the Disneyland Castle and Walt's signature. And however they open and frame the story, you'll find a smile creaking across your face. And you're hoping that in 3 months time, that you'll want to have at least one longingly loving song stuck in your head that makes you think of the sweetness of those times when you had no clue whatsoever... that "Happily Ever After" really meant. The subsequent days, weeks, months and years that were about to sweep over these love struck slightly anorexic and self-involved "princesses" would be like as soon as... Well, we don't think about that. They're doodles and we don't think about dinking around with doodles. Turpentine burns during the clean up, btw.
But... You folks know who you are. And even though, you're a grown up... surrounded by a bitter world of so many dissatisfied unhappily ever after moments you have... you still hold on to the dream... that one day your prince will come... or someday you'll get to boink your own Earthly form of Ariel or Snow White or Princess Aurora. You've seen the flashes of a VooDoo musical number and your mind is dying to see what that is all about.
Or maybe, you've stayed away from trailers, and after years of being aggravated by Disney Corps. ridiculous abandonment of 2D traditional hand drawn animation... you hope. You hope PRINCESS AND THE FROG rocks and succeeds and the greatest tradition ... to the core of what Walt Disney was about would continue and thrive for countless future generations. Because in your mind, this is what Disney should do absolutely best!
But you also remember a lot of really lame 2D animated films from this company among others. You want to come out singing, not ranting. And this is your first step to finding out which you'll do.
SO... this is a first come, first served... Race to send an email to me, with the subject line:
This Is The Frog I'd Like To Leap!!!
In the body of the email, tell me which Disney animated Prince or Princess or Villain you would most wish to have a significant long term or one night stand with. What is your name & the name of your singular guest? So just +1s on this contest, ok?
Well stop reading, you've wasted precious time reading all this. There's only 40 tickets, which means only 20 winners, unless there's a few lonely hearts. Otherwise... Why are you still reading this? There really is no point.
The details are in the headline. This Saturday, Alamo South, 2pm... Oh - and as soon as I have the winners, I'll email the winners back. Ok? See you this Saturday Afternoon... unless we're all Ice Planet Hoth. In which case you South Austin neighbors of the Drafthouse South might want to show up on a chance of replacing stranded North Austinites too scared to cross any of the bridges due to perilous icy frozen death.

Especially with a bunch of kids, which is how Disney films are supposed to be seen. I actually really liked The Emperors New Groove, and Mulan and Lilo & Stitch some (just not as much as TENG), so I'm pretty stoked that they're doing line drawn animation again. Even if it is clearly computer touched.

I thought the screening was at 1pm. That's what the Facebook group says, at least...

Trailer makes it look like everything that was wrong with Disney
by critch
Talking animals and fart jokes. Boy I'm glad Lassiter is doing things differently!
-
Shitting on its own past glory, one bad decision at a time!!! This looks horridly vapid.

The 1st African American themed Disney movie in 63 years!
by drunkenbusboy
It's about time Disney!! 63 years!? And Song of the South is not exactly something to brag about in it's portrayal of African Americans!
-
Only Disney film I've wanted to see in years, lmao
-
...but what are you talking about. It looks like a line drawn Disney film. And there's been very little of it released, so how can you judge it from a commercial and a trailer. Sound like random hate to me.
-
Texas is a bit of a drive from L.A. The trailers look great though, I hope the kids have fun.
-
10 out of 12 "top critic" reviews are singing it's praises, so those wanting to call it some kind of travesty compared to the studio's past glories are maybe speaking too soon.

@critch: Talking animals part of 'what was wrong with Disney'?
by biffs_pleasure_paradise
Talking animals built that company from day one you dumb fuck.
-
Read my post and I will berate you for reading it. TOO LATE!!! Jeebuz.
-
Cutesy talking animals were part of Disney's heritage, to be sure, but their problem is they shoehorned them into every damn movie they did towards the end at the expense of the story, as opposed to the old days when it would serve the story.
In this movie I can buy the talking frogs, they fit the story. It's about them. The problem is there's a talking fly "Don't make me light my butt" *fart noise* *sheepish look*, and a talking alligator.
It's also a movie with princess in the title with trailers that are focused on selling to girls. I would be worried if I was remotely interested in this.
Please, continue with the insults, it means so much coming from a nameless bunch of text.
I really think time has passed by the line-drawn 2D stuff. It just looks old and been there done that.
But we'll see. -
With the merchandising. Yeah, selling t-shirts and stuffed critters had always been a SMALL part of animation, but when the movie-making takes a back seat to the marketing and retailing department, quality suffers.
Just think "Fantasia" vs. "Beauty and the Beast", for example. How many Fantasia t-shirts and other crap of that nature were sold? One is a true masterpiece, and one is a decent movie, with the t-shirt sales to prove it existed. -
...to a piece of shit? Hahahahaha!
-
Any time I see any footage from it, I cant help but think of that "Happily Ever After" show on HBO Family with classic fairytales retold with African American or Hispanic flavor. Not to mention the princesses with their ghetto-bootays.

There were 3 fart gags in the 30 second TV trailer
by the reluctant austinite
The firefly tries to light up, but farts and says "excuse me". Some guy has a frog in the back of his pants (technically this is a poop joke). An alligator makes embarrasing bubbles in the water. Now, the animation looks great----I hope this trailer isn't reflective of the movie as whole.
-
And remember that there wasn't a single animated image of a black human being in all of Disney's 20th Century output. Not until Fantasia 2000. So this film is a gigantic step toward acknowledging America as it is, and I'm hoping for the best...and prepared to cut them some slack.

... spends most of her screen time as a frog.
Way to push the color barrier Disney. Racist crap from the "House of Mouse." -

International box office for a Disney movie with black princess.
by gibsonusa returns
I am curious to see the results. Especially by region.
-
Thought it was good. As far as the race theme in the movie goes, I think it was handled well. She does spend a lot of her screen time as a frog but it doesn't erase the fact that the character was a hard working, decent, independent, capable young black woman. I think at of all the Disney princesses so far she is one of the most real and endearing.
-
I genuinely love Disney. The problem isn't theirs--it's human nature to believe that whatever "we" are is better. It's the American public, and America is about as good as it gets, so I don't really have resentments there either, except toward assholes who think the playing field is level. "Princess and the Frog" is a natural progression, and I seriously hope it succeeds.

I'm guessing the next Disney princess will be multi racial
by requisitemonkey
bisexual, hemaphrodite, cross-dressing, racist, homophobic, piously religious and athiest. Maximum profit

whose sole existence to wring as many dollars out of every living thing. Disney isn't racist and will never be, it's just greedy, and greed is colorblind. If it was profitable and socially acceptable to commit genocide against all Norwegians Disney would do that. That's just their nature.
-
Is probably just a bare hair more racist than the average American...and that has been true for all its existence. As the culture changes, so does the company. Any corporation exists to eat money, but Disney attracts dreamers, who tend to be more open to differences, I think. I hope. Anyway, I'm willing to cut them slack. I doubt seriously that they are more racist than the average Talkbacker. Or member of Congress. Or human being.

Harry was only lukewarm on "Princess and the Frog"
by the reluctant austinite
This from his Twitter post: PRINCESS AND THE FROG felt about as uneven as HUNCHBACK- didn't blow me away, but kids and families loved it. Dangit. Really wanted to love!

...hadn't seen it since I was a kid...it's amazing how well that mutha holds up. It's all about the CHARACTERS, bitches! Those 7 Dwarfs are just as funny and endearing and original today as they were like 70 years ago. The music is gorgeous still. The Wicked Queen just as badass. And Disney hasn't created a film that approaches such greatness since The Lion King. Now Disney's a fucking corporation that BUYS characters instead of creating them, like those fucking muppets (whose Xmas special bombed in the ratings last night, by the way) and who adds fart jokes to ads promoting their classic films (wow, that horse cut one in the 101 Dalmations ad! I must have that DVD!!!!) Jesus. I don't know, Harry, the trailers for the Frog thing make the film look slick and colorful and empty. Where's the soul? If Tiana stayed human for more than 10% of the film, I might be interested. But instead she's a frog most of the time, a frog which has a character design that's blander than Kermit. And the gator and the firefly do nothing for me. I wish this film well, so that Disney might someday return to true 2D animated greatness, but I really have no interest in seeing this. To me, Astro Boy was a Disney film in spirit - it made you laugh and broke your heart and was a delight to the eye. Disney ought to be making films like that. Hell, after the below-par Wall*E and Up, PIXAR ought to be making films like that.
-
Jesus christ, you could call every fucking movie studio in existence racist - MGM, "Gone With The Wind", anyone? What the hell do you all believe everything that overrated moron Seth McFarlane says? Damn. Bet you get all your news from Jon Stewart too.
-
Disney makes decisions based on what can make the $$$$. This, like every other major movie, is not made to be "nice" or to be "mean" or "moral/immoral" or "racist" or "fair" or whatever. It's made and positioned to make money...they felt having a main character in that setting with that storyline can make money. Period.

Nah, their next few animated movies will have caucasian leads.
by gibsonusa returns
Either that or talking animals like Lion King. Not that it matters to me the race of an animated character, but thats just my guess.
I can't see the business case for having their next animated movie other way following this one. -
A talkback with massive potential for racist fucks (the backbone of AICN's Talkbackers) lies mostly empty. Not a good sign for this one, Mickey. A pity, but you scared me off from wanting to see it with NUTTY PROFESSOR giant suddenly-expanding butt "Now THAT ... is VERY NASTEE!" jokes and three (yeah, three) fart gags in one trailer. Three farts and a giant "ghetto" ass ? No thanks.

Initially, Arab-Americans took offense to 'Aladdin', Native Americans to 'Pocohontas', don't remember too much objection to 'Mulan', but give it a rest...'Princess & the Frog' is par for the course Disney...which is a good thing considering they had shut down the 2D animation dept. This will do good business.
