The Director Of MODERN WARFARE 2 Eases On Down FROST ROAD!!

Published at:  Dec 02, 2009 11:54:16 AM CST

Merrick here...

Keith Arem, who "directed" the recently released CALL OF DUTY game MODERN WARFARE 2, will make his feature film debut with a multi-platform endeavor called FROST ROAD.

Project revolves around a young man who awakens from a car accident to discover he is one of few survivors in the aftermath of a mysterious outbreak that's struck a small coast town on the East Coast. Somehow immune to the contagion, he tries to save the remaining survivors as he struggles to prevent the deadly wave from spreading across the planet.

Arem penned the script for the pic, and is also developing the project as a graphic novel with co-creator Brandon Humphreys, with Christopher Shy illustrating.

...says THIS article in Variety.

Given that MODERN WARFARE 2 made something like 100 kazillion-gillion-babillion dollars (actually, Variety says it pulled down $550 million in five days - towards a total of $3 billion since its November 10 release ), Arem's gravitation towards other media isn't altogether surprising. It's a great game which I don't entirely suck at. I appreciate that empowerment, so a tip of the hat to Keith...

By the way, if you're thinking of picking up MW2 for Christmas or something, the night vision goggles that come with THE "PRESTIGE" VERSION AVAILABLE HERE actually work pretty well! Their range isn't particularly great, but they're really pretty nice in tighter environs.

Hmmm, FROST ROAD. If FURY ROAD actually happens, I wonder if people will confuse it with this?

Can I ask if Arem also wrote MW2? Because the story and script was terrible. However, the setpieces and action are outstanding in Call Of Duty, so I'll be interested to see how he doe's with his first non-interactive entertainment project

    Hey Merrick,
That 3 billion amount you reference is NOT for MW2 but rather the ENTIRE COD Catalog.
'As of November 27, 2009, total sales for the Call Of Duty series have surpassed 55 million units worldwide, taking $3 billion in retail sales in the process.' IGN, Wikipedia.
But. MW2 sold 4.7 Million copies in 24 hours making it the largest entertainment launch in history.

$3 BIL? Not so fast... $500mil IN TWENTY FOUR HOURS, though!

    by funnyhat

That $3 Billion is all of them, covering almost 6 years and as many as 10 games. Granted only the first two sold even near the amount that that the 3 released since 2007 has, but Modern Warfare(2007) and Modern Warfare 2 (last month) do account for nearly $1.4 Billion in sales. Modern Warfare 2, also earned $500,000,000 on ONE day, not 5. It made back half of it's production and marketing budget back in the first 5 hours of release.

Upon its release, Modern Warfare 2 sold nearly 5 million copies, generating 435 million dollars worldwide in 24 hours. That makes it the largest entertainment release of all time. It made more money in ONE day than 'the dark knight' made in NINE. That is the fastest grossing ANYTHING, EVER. PERIOD. Don't hate. Also, the figures account for 4 versions of the game. A $60 normal edition, of which most copies were. A collectors edition, which was bundled with special xbox 360's and sold at a premium as well as being sold as 'the hardened edition' alone for $80. And a $150 'prestige' version which came with functioning night vision goggles. Easily, 80% of their sales are attributed to the $60($50 for PC) versions. Don't hate.

Been Down With COD From The Start

    by autodidact

I'm a huge fan of the COD single player experience. I bought COD1 the first day it came out back in 2003 because I had heard the sound was exceptional. MW2's campaign is not quite as absorbing and fun as MW1. The individual chapters are also not as varied and well-paced. MW1 was intense but MW2 is just too much most of the time. It's a very fine line. The main thing that annoyed me more in MW2 was the way you seemed to always be surrounded by enemies.. it sometimes felt like the game was "cheating" and spawning enemies that I ought to have seen just a moment ago.

I've never played COD multiplayer for more than a couple minutes. I find the emphasis on perks and stuff way too gamey. I like my realistic shooters to be a bit more realistic and immersive. So I'm still a BF2 guy. Although I'm currently on one of my longest streaks of not playin BF2.. at least five solid weeks at this point since I've played it. Longest since a few months in a row back in 2007 when I didn't have it installed.

    MW2 multiplayer is great but

    by adelai niska

the actual story made no sense. Not a single plot point fed into what came later, almost every possible thread was left hanging, and there are huge gaps in logic such as not killing Makarov the moment he gives you a gun. If this guy "directed" that game, he seems to know jack shit about storytelling. Now I'm going back play Domination.

    Agree About Makarov

    by autodidact

I think the creators of the game could have really done something cool and attention-getting (not that they need another iota of attention on this game) by allowing the player to shoot Makarov and his thugs in the back during the airport scene. The penalty would have been you don't get to play the rest of the campaign. So naturally people would reload and play through without killing the gunmen in order to progress, but they would have the inner satisfaction of knowing they chose not to pretend to actually murder people.

MW2 was full of massive plot holes.

    by kevin_costners_recycled_piss

Like that fact that the whole invasion of the USA revolved around the fact that Russia believed that the airport massacre was orcastrated by the CIA yet had they taken the time to glance at one of the many security tapes they would have seen Makarov and his men.

    Campaign has some excellent missions

    by kevin_costners_recycled_piss

Great setpieces, loads of 'wow' moments and plenty of heartstopping sequences where you just feel overwhelmed by the enemies but the actual story is pretty weak.

It feels alot like they simply came up with a bunch of locations and setpieces and then tried to tie them all together with some kind of plot. Most of the missions are even blatently ripped off from movies anyway like the whole 'Gulag' mission is pretty much The Rock right down to the firefight in the old showers and then there's the whole US invasion which is basically Red Dawn.

Don't get me wrong, it's still exciting and fun to play, just not all that original.

    by cronenbergresearcher

whatever you want to call it, serves a purpose and that is to have fun by experiencing the simulation of war, without actually having to face the horrors and boredom/difficult work of actual war. That said, the modern warfare/call of duty whatever it wants to be called, brand is a extremely generic version of storytelling. The CALL OF DUTY people are brilliant at visual effects/technical/digital creations & marketing. However, I would not put them in charge of film direction or screen writing. Leave that to the experts. In the end, the movie execs, are just looking for another popular brand to whore, like monopoly, battleship, risk, other board/video games/toys, etc. They are business people, who don't actually enjoy movies.

We judge movies by gross, not by eyeballs glued to the screen, do we? Of course, the audience for gaming is much narrower than for movies or books or even music, but try selling a movie ticket for 60$ and then tell me how many eyeballs are glued to the screen.
In the end it is all about money and gaming is where the biggest bucks are. Why? Coz it gives bigger bang per buck than any other form of entertainment.
