THE HOBBIT (Slightly) Delayed!!!

Published at:  Dec 01, 2009 12:24:53 AM CST

Beaks here...

The wait for Peter Jackson's return to Middle Earth just got longer. By a full three months!!!

In a move that could affect casting choices (doubtful) and proposed release dates (probable), Peter Jackson has announced that production on his two-part adaptation of J.R.R. Tolkien's THE HOBBIT could be pushed to the middle of summer 2010. This is evidently due to a delay in the completion of the screenplay for the second installment, which Jackson is currently banging out with Fran Walsh, Phillipa Boyens and Guillermo del Toro.

Does this mean THE HOBBIT PART 1 will miss its tentatively-scheduled December 2011 release date? Possibly. What it most assuredly means is that del Toro won't be free of his Tolkien obligations as soon as we thought, so if you're holding out for, say, AT THE MOUNTAINS OF MADNESS... keep on holdin' out.

Del Toro At His Best When Doin' His Own Thing

    by freebeer

Hellboy and Blade 2 and Mimic cannot compare to Devil's Backbone, Kronos, Pan's Laberinth. His vision is going to be incumbered also because the aesthetic has to blend seemlessly with that of Jackson's Lord Of TheRings trilogy. Imagine if MGM had given him this budget not to make Te Hobbit, but to create something completely original, HOW AMAZING WOULD THAT HAVE BEEN!! Del Toro's imagination not limited by budget contraints or having to tell somebody elses story?

I won't deny Del Toro's greatness when it comes to his own works, but he is working with some talented people and source material. I have faith that his vision mixed with Jackson's and crew will be good enough to satisfy us.

Del Toro needs to stay on this project

    by ol' painless

He's made great movies, but THE HOBBIT is a chance to be part of something really huge, and totally compatable with his aesthetic. He's still a relatively young dude, plenty of films left in him, so if he walks from a dream project like this, I reckon he'll regret it for the rest of his career.

I think Guillermo Del Toro is kinda overrated. He massacred Hellboy. Took that shit right out of Mignola's hands and had them drinking beer and crooning Barry Manilow. The fuck. The Hellboys have great MOMENTS, but they can be really painful at times too.

Guillermo Del Toro is mad corny sometimes, is all. Great visual guy, definitely, he IS an artist. But some of his ideas aggravate me.

    by billboefett

"The Life and Times of Lockesbrokenleg", the documentary. Sadly, it only won accolades when it was pulled from theaters, after the opening night. The accolades were cheers from the audience who hated the fuck out of it. "Total misery. Nothing but depressive complaining, dourness, negativity. I would shoot myself in the nuts if I have his life" one moviegoer was quoted as saying.

    I think what's being missed

    by jaka

Is that The Hobbit is only one book, a short one at that, that they've said previously would only comprise the first film. At least that's what I last remember hearing. So hopefully what this means is that they're still pouring over the endless possibilities for stories involving characters already used and not yet seen in a way to better tie the first two films into the trilogy. That's what I hope it means anyway, with run-on sentences and everything. No offense to Guillermo, because I've dug what I've seen of his films thus far. But it's not like he's really a household name yet. Working on a film this huge, especially if it's successful (and we know it will be) could make it much easier for him to do whatever he wants for years to come.

The post you're vaguely remembering, and massively misquoting was a blurb about how Maggie Grace was FLYING to Hawaii, and how she commented "It would be cool to be back on LOST". And yet.. nothing has ever been filmed, and she's done a movie since she said that quote. She was never on set on LOST, ever in that timeframe. And you can't prove me wrong. The fact that you're not even trying shows what you really know to be true. They've only shot 9 episodes, so use my link I gave you and find the episode she's in, and what was shot. Stop fucking dinking around. I don't know whats more disturbing and pathetic, that you trust your memory THAT much, or that it really, really is so wrong?

    by billboefett

Ian Somerhalder has shot his scenes, sans Grace. He hasn't been in any scenes shot with Maggie Grace, period. The latest news update, as far as spoilersblog or EW or E:Online is that Maggie Grace is the sole holdout from the former losties to come back. She's been unavailable due to shooting 3 movies back to back, regardless if she was in Hawaii, or not. As of today, she has not said yes, or been in any scenes, period. And now I'm tired of talking about this. If she comes back, that would be great, but she hasn't yet. And... to throw you a bone (like the sticking out of your shin) IF, IF they shot any scenes with her, no one knows about it, anywhere. Period. There is no news that she's back on LOST.

They aren't perfect, but if you accept them as big budget pulpy monster films they're actually quite good. And Pearlman is about as close as any actor will ever get to BEING a comic book character brought to screen.

settled the lawsuit, and is reported to be in the first 3 of 6 episodes of s6, so far. This part worries me a little: in the official ABC press-junket release promoting s6 of LOST, Henry Ian Cusick isn't mentioned as starring, so he's no longer considered a "regular". Whereas Nestor Carbonell, who plays Richard Alpert, will be in all but 2 eps of s6, and has moved his family to Hawaii. Illana and Lapidus are now regular castmembers as well. But not Desmond :(

We see Jack, Kate, etc, all of them wake up and are all in a giant. They all get out of the room, and find themselves in a world that's been destroyed. The island was the center of the world, and because they destroyed that, the world was also destroyed. They're the only ones left. The end. I know, it's silly.

lol - I said all I have to say

    by jaka

Since The Hobbit is NOT a two film worthy book, I think them spending as much time as possible on the script is a good thing. I'm a hugest of the huge Tolkienite. I have every book he ever published and all of Christopher's on the shelf behind me. And I mean all of them! I have the Tolkien Song Book (with actual charts) and The Father Christmas Letters. The simple fact of the matter is that The Hobbit is ONE FILM! However, there is an abundance of cool stories in the appendices, The Silmarillion and Book of Lost Tales that could be used to make a cool movie bridging the gap between the time of The Hobbit and the moment when Gandy comes knockin' on Bilbo's door in The Fellowship. They could also just tell back stories. But whatever they do it's going to be something made-up, but hopefully made-up of from the actual source material. I know that Peter, Fran and Philipa have great respect for the books, including all the endless parts and pieces that Tolkien never got into the main stories. They used parts of the appendices in the trilogy and mention the fact that they read them many times. I know many "fans" who would honestly tell you they've never done that. So, yeah, babble babble. But I actually think spending more time on the script is a good thing.

    by jaka

First, going to bed failed - but chat would make it even more unlikely. Second, nearly all of Tolkien's songs are terrible, as is most of his poetry. Lastly, the songbook is actually charts. But I could probably find the song, or figure out which one you're talking about, with a little more description. Friendly Dumbledores isn't doing it for me.

I gather you're comparing Harry Potter and Tolkien. Which is good, because I was considering actually trying to find a song that mentioned Dumbledores and/or fireflies. Anyway, the book is called The Road Goes Ever On - A Song Cycle. And if there is a question that the online Encyclopedia of Arda can't answer for you, then your question is probably wrong. Part of me seriously wishes that we could have those days back. When the first time you found out about a movie, was when you saw the trailer. Anyone over 30 probably knows that feeling - 'oh my GOD!!! the new James Bond film is coming out soon!!!!!'. Of course, this is an idiotic thought on my part because I am here in the land of movie buzz etc. But I think that Guillermo should have said 'no' to all these interviews about THE HOBBIT (unless they are a ploy to get the studio to commit). Like, dude, at least wait until you've finished FILMING the thing. A drip-feed of Hobbit stuff for the next two years will be unbearable. No film would be able to live up to it. Imagine if Spielberg had done tight security on Indy IV. Trailers featuring minimal footage. No-one giving away that Marion was back. No-one giving interviews where they say: 'I'm not allowed to tell you anything'.

This is a GOOD sign. The delay is due to them working on the SCRIPT. Jackson is quoted as saying that the script for at least the last LOTR movie could have used a few more passes. They were planning monster designs for HALO before writing one word of script. District 9 had no script at all.

I had the impression that a decision had been made not to have a "first film is the Hobbit, second film is a bridge" approach. I read in an interview about the probable switching point in the book between movies. Looking around for confirmation, I find this from an article on Nov 5th from theonering.net:
the writing team of Jackson, del Toro and long-time Jackson collaborators Phillipa Boyens and Fran Walsh all worked on a script for the better part of a year and split The Hobbit into two films with information about Gandalf’s “off stage” efforts and the greater concerns of Middle-earth peppered through the narrative.

Will be, essentially, The Hobbit, with more Gandalf, more middle-earth, direct or indirect references to Saruman and Sauron, more of the backstory that leads to the War of the Ring. And, thusly, more cameos from familiar LOTR characters who don't actually appear in The Hobbit novel.

    100% incorrect.

The series does not end with the plane landing safely in LA. Lest you forget that would mean Kate is still in FBI custody, Charlie is still a heroin addict, Jack is a depressed alcoholic, Locke still can't walk, etc, etc. I repeat, this is NOT how the series will end.

HOWEVER, it IS how season 6 will begin.

slone13, LOST has often been structured with the classic 'circular' ark.
The classic symmetry of ending where it begins (which to bring this back on topic is why ROTK ends where it does).
I'd put money on LOST ending with the plane landing, or perhaps with the survivors failing to alter the timeline and thus the ending would be Jack on his back on the island - exactly where the first ep began. Thus creating one six season time loop.

    by bellam

Sure, it may be a good project for Del Toro, as far as paving the way for future projects - but is anyone honestly anticipating this? Especially considering how much they are going to bloat what is a fun little adventure novel into an artificially EPIC EXPERIENCE. I loved the novel - it's a great story. When I first saw each LotR film, I was blown away by it. When I second saw them, I was less so, and now I couldn't care less if I ever see them again. For me, they don't hold up - once the initial shock of the spectacle wears off, its all kind of tired and boring. There is no creative or artistic necessity - there is no difference in greenlighting Hobbit than there is the next Transformers film. I don't think they're going to phone it in, and it will probably be a capable set of films that ape and echo LotR well. But we don't need more LotR. The twenty eight hours we have is sufficient.

    Catching up on comments...

    by jaka

Hell yes I want Ian Holm back. And even if they need to "youngify" him with makeup and cgi, that can easily be accomplished these days. I agree about him not aging in the books, but he looks older in real life now. So they'd have to do something.DEFINITELY agree that Gandy must be McKellen. Well Billboe, you've stumped me - but I'll look for the song name if that's what you're asking.Only the comic relief Gimli and the leaving out of Tim Bombadil still gets on my nerves. I'm at peace with everything else. ... oh, and whoever thought Legolas should snowboard on a shield should be shot. But otherwise, cool. I don't have any problem with the elves look or "feel". It works for me.OK, so while I think stretching The Hobbit part of the story over two movies is unnecessary as it could easily be told in one 90 minute film. I still think, and it seems others agree, that it's a good thing the delay is relating to the script. The thing fans of the books will be most pissed off about is how much of the story is literally made up. There is really no need for any large portions of it to be done that way. I'm pretty sure the only reason The Hobbit didn't happen faster, and maybe part of why King Kong was so uneven, is because PJ and camp were pissed off about the money they were owed on the trilogy. It did end up as a lawsuit, after all. While it really sounds plausible, I'd still be pissed off if Lost ends in giant time loop. That would be the easiest way for them to just disregard all the interesting questions they created along the way.I would LOOOOVE a Cerebus movie, obviously. :) I think there's actually more of a chance now than there has been in quite a few years, believe it or not. In fact, somebody is making a low budget cgi movie all on their own. But Dave seemingly becoming at peace with both his and Cerebus' legacies (which is to say, brilliance gone wrong to the point that it pissed people off) and poking his head out into the world again is a big help. Have you checked out www.cerebustv.com Hearing Dave speak like, and like a normal human being, always trips me out.

I thought me, Mostholy and Fred were the only ones on here who love the Earth Pig Born!
Nice handle there Jaka. Has anyone killed a yak for you yet? have you seen anyone wearing a tall pointy hat?
I am a very, very, very long time reader. I picked up my first issue back in 1980 and stuck around through the comic brilliance of the Moonroach issues to the sublime Prime Minister and Pope issues, to the drug and or alcohol induced garbage that also produced Sims' nervous breakdown and misogynistic turn, to the almost non-existent pencils (even with the help off the estimable Gerhard). To the slow crawl back to relevance and the slow descent into mediocrity with only an occasional flash of the genius that fueled the early to mid 80's efforts, to the last dying gasp. yes, I saw it all from the fans perspective. From Deni and her big glasses to 'who the hell is Gerhard?'
At it's best, Cerebus was the finest and most literate piece of genius fueled work ever produced in the comic book medium. At its' worst, it was a soul wrenching account of a man's descent into madness played out for all the readers (or the few of us as it were who stayed loyal)to see and cringe at. Yes, part of me would love to see the Earth Pig Born on the big screen, but I truly fear that it could never be accurately made. A talking sword wielding, vest wearing third person speaking Aardvark who becomes Pope and then throws babies off of balconies and tells the parents they should be grateful he did that because '...one less mouth to feed is one less mouth to feed' well that could be a hard sell. But part of me really wants to see that!

    toadkillerdog, oh, we're out there!

    by jaka

And seemingly we're slowly leaking out of the cracks that Dave forced us into over the years. I've heard much more Cerebus talk in the last 2-3 years than I did in the last ten years of the series run. And hey! 1980 was when I jumped on as well (same year I first read Elfquest and the magazine sized Conans as well). Other than a very few months where I missed an issue and didn't bother to pick it up after the fact I was a monthly IN STORE purchaser until the series ended. I openly, often to the point of annoyance, LOVE/D that book. Many of my friends actually call me Cerebus, STILL! But that name was taken when I joined AICN way back when, so I went with Jaka. Anyway...
Yes, High Society is the only place to start until Dave (and hopefully Ger) get around to redrawing the first 25 issues. If a movie was made that entire run could be done in a 3 minute intro piece because most of it doesn't relate to the rest of the story, which actually starts with High Society.
Call me a die-hard, or a loyalist, or just delusional - but I love the entire Cerebus run. All of it! And I prefer the actual monthly issues because of the Letters From the President, the actual Letters column and Dave's Tangents. There were entire YEARS where I actually enjoyed that part of the book more than the 20 monthly pages as I think it actually improved the overall reading experience. Some of that is lost in the phone books, which makes it more difficult for some people to tackle reading them. Now, the movie, I just don't think it could be a literal translation of the comic - and it probably shouldn't be. But there is definitely a movie in there. Three of four really. High Society and Church & State could definitely be made into one story. All of the material with Jaka - maybe including Rick's Story - would make a great movie for fans, but I'm not sure how it would translate for noobs. The only stuff that I think pointless for film would be Guys - which could be told in a montage in about 5 minutes - and Latter Days/The Last Day. Latter Days because it's just so much "wtf Dave?!", and The Last Day because it's so out of line with the rest of the story. Siiigh. Like old times, this is. lol Yeah, I'd love a movie, of any kind. Obviously still hoping that happens.

    Re gibbering madness

    by jaka

It's not that so much as it was just Dave doing whatever the hell he wanted because it was truly and completely his book. It was 100% self published and idiosyncratic to the extreme. And when he did something that alienated fans - as was often the case - instead of back-peddling and trying to bring them back he would push his agenda even farther. He is OPENLY anti-feminist - whether that makes him a misogynist or not is still debatable - and let it take over a huge portion of the storyline in the book. His religious beliefs changed often throughout the series run and were always an integral part of the story. Unfortunately, near the end of the run, this happened (from his Wiki page): Following his reading of the Bible and the Qur'an beginning in December 1996, Sim underwent a religious conversion from atheist secular humanism to his own mixture of the Abrahamic religions. He lives a lifestyle of fasting, celibacy, prayer, and alms-giving, and considers scriptures from the Jewish (the Torah, and Nevi'im), Christian (the Gospels, Acts and the Book of Revelation), and Islamic (the Qur'an) religions to be equally valid as the Word of God. He explored theological themes heavily in the later issues of Cerebus. Now, I still love Latter Days for a number of reasons. The art is insanely detailed and beautiful. The Woody Allen and Three Stooges stuff is right in line with his use of "real world people" and parody from many earlier portions of the series. Unfortunately, a lot of the shit is just straight up near unreadable. All that, and about 10,000 other words that I could write - aside, it's still one of the best comic books ever printed. The humor, intelligence, ground-breaking art and ideas, philosophical point of view, joy, sadness and anger in the books are undeniable. As a fan of both comics and literature in general I can confidently recommend everything from High Society (book 2) through Form and Void (book 14). But if you have the books in the attic you should absolutely read High Society, Church & State Vol 1 & 2 and Jaka's Story. Now, who's reading Glamourpuss!? I freakin' love that book!

    Let me clarify...

    by jaka

I don't think it unfortunate that Dave found his own spiritual place, peace, beliefs - whatever! I think that's great, if it's what brings you happiness. I just found it unfortunate that it took Cerebus in yet another completely different direction and made the end of the series somewhat odd and anti-climatic. Dave always said he had a plan for the entire run from about issue 25. But I don't believe for one second that Latter Days and The Last Day were part of that plan. I believe that came strictly from his "spiritual awakening".

...and now, in this nearly dead talkback, I will attempt...

    by flickapoo

...a quick and superficial list of LOTR high points and low points...mostly for my own amusement. The books were first read to me at the age of four, so they are the ink and paper equivalent of a snuggle blanket and my own suckable right thumb...I have no objectivity. The Shire...perfect. Merry and Pippin's comic relief bugs me a bit, but they are good for kids and sold another 100 million worth of tickets so I understand the necessity. Sean Astin is no great actor, but the fact that he's so earnest and trying so hard sort of works for the role. Elijah Wood?...I don't know man. Sometimes really good, but that generic wandering accent... Strider/Aragorn...wasn't sure about Mortensen at first, but he won me over completely. Completely. The flight to the ford...very good. Changed from the book of course, but very exciting...great way to end the first section of the movie. The Last Homely House...beautiful design. Love the otherworldly atmosphere. Statues are a little fantasy art cheesy, but no big deal.Elves in general...terrible. Probably the single worst thing about the movies. Blanchett is great and I even like Liv Tyler, but the males look ridiculous...like Felicity Huffman in TRANSAMERICA. Pasty, bloated, visibly white makeuped DURAN DURAN looking guys. Council of Elrond...I have to leave the room. Can't watch it. It would be cheesy in the SWORD AND THE SORCERER "sequel" and it's an abomination here. Gimli...terrible. Too much crap on his face...John Rhys-Davies is in a completely different movie...some sort of fantasy spoof or SNL sketch. Several clunky photo-op shots of The Fellowship that make me cringe. Mines of Moria...great work...amazingly good. I could do without the breaking/tottering video game staircase, but no big deal. One of the best parts of the movies. Lothlorien...very, very good...apart from the overall transvestite problem. Good job capturing the spooky and alien elements. All the river, breaking of the fellowship, and death of Boromir stuff is perfect. Boromir's death in particular couldn't be better. My one complaint with the end here is that Aragorn is too OK with what's going on. I realize they needed an end to the first movie that doesn't make you want to slit your wrists, but Aragorn is supposed to feel really tormented and like a complete failure at this point. And as usual some Gimli cheese tarnishes the moment. I better stop here. Nobody's going to read this and I'm starting to bore myself.

...and you didn't even get out of the first film. I just can't agree completely about the elves. Mostly because they don't all look that way. I know exactly the characters you're referring to, but it's only a portion of the elves in the film. But I still dig the way they look in general. There is no description of them all being thin, so the bloated thing is kinda silly. And they're supposed to be of another age and have a disdain - be it great or small - of most other beings in middle-earth. So their standofish hoity-toity attitude works for me, too. What annoys me is when they show up randomly to help fight and then start getting killed off like everyone else. Wasn't in the book - shouldn't have happened.

The fact that it's not complete shit was a bonus. The fact that I LOVE all the back stories that most people don't know, and that the writing team is using them to help create two new movies out of The Hobbit, makes me pretty geeked-out. Any good sword and sorcery fantasy geeks me out. And notice I said good. It doesn't even have to be great, which I think the LOTR is.

    Jaka

    by toadkillerdog

As a fellow long-suffering fan - I salute you! Cerebus, Iron Man and Xmen were my top three faves in the late 70's to mid 80's and beyond. They pulled me into the store. And long after Iron Man was wrecked by Denny Fucking O'neil, and Xmen became just a money grab, I still only ventured into the store to get Cerebus and only Cerebus. I was in the Marine Corp for 14 years, and even when I could not get to a shop, I still managed to pick up back issues. I have every issue of the run except the first 3. To anyone who wants to read Cerebus, it is best done in chronological order starting with High Society. However, there are some insanely funny books predating HS that involve Lord Julius (who is really Groucho Marx). Jaka, I read every issues letters pages and message from the president, and you are 100% correct, there were years when they were more entertaining that the book itself - which is sad, but also one of those things that link a true Cerebus fan to just the Dirty Fleegles of the world. I loved that series, and yes even at it's most frustrating I stuck with it. But at times it was a chore.
I remember having a mini crush on Deni and those big glasses of hers. I met Dave at a book signing in upstate NY - he was just the nicest and mots patient comic book artist I ever met. I saw guys come in with brief cases filled with Cerebus - and he signed every one until store mgmt put a stop to it. I have a poster he did with Cerebus decked out like a football player that he autographed. To this day it is framed and hanging in my game room - next to my Giants memorabilia!
Yes, I wish he had not gone off on some of those tangents - although they provided an unimpeded look into his life as it was falling apart. I wish the promise of the Mind Games and Suenteus Po had actually come to fruition. I wish Cerebus had not died alone and unloved - and with a stupid son! But, all those things will never detract from the sheer joy i got from reading the Wolveroach - - how I was in tears from laughing so hard when he beat up the Scottish dude who bragged that the roach 'bruised his knuckles perty bad on mah kidneys'. Or moonroach and kevitch. Or the Super Secret Sacred wars. Or wondering about Astoria's motives. Or wishing the Elf would return. Every few years I break out the series and read start to finish. I might have to go back to HS again very soon.

I love most of the series as much as the portions you've already mentioned. It's just that it became more difficult to love them on a monthly basis as the series was ongoing. The mix of prose with traditional pages - loved it! The use of Wilde and Hemingway - loved it! His slow decline into hating everything and everyone - loved it! lol Shoot, Going Home and Form & Void are some of my favorite parts of the story. Partly for personal reasons. But mostly because I love that he brought Jaka back and then just brushed her off and out of the story again, breaking fans hearts. The Regency Elf turning out to be a "fake" - Cerebus' subconscious - and never returning has always pissed me off. It was too easy for Dave. But I believe that, and the non-return of a few other characters until the last page of issue 300 - had as much to do with Dave's fractured real-life relationships as anything else. He simply didn't want to keep dealing with the people he'd moved on from in real world in his created world.

To the one book-one movie that it should be. ...why thank you. You'll have to start a petition to get the next two installments...fifty signatures minimum.I haven't seen RETURN OF THE KING in a while so I'm rusty. For THE TWO TOWERS my complaint list is mostly even more and even worse Gimli...more Elves with bad skin and double chins, and the pacing/editing. The book of course follows each story thread for a long time in big chunks. The movie has to break things up and it just doesn't work as well...messy and sometimes a little boring. Also, some big moments lose their proper impact without an uninterrupted buildup. I'm not really sure how they could have avoided the problem...just a tighter script I suppose. Once the movie gets a chance to settle in at Helm's Deep it gets a lot better (except for shield surfing of course).I generally don't mind little changes to help the story work as a movie, but the whole Warg fight and Aragorn falling off the cliff seemed unnecessary and crammed in. Some of the worst CG in the movie too.As always, the environments are perfect and spectacular. I thought everything at Helm's Deep looked just right and they did a great job of building up dread and a feeling of humanity making a last desperate stand...maybe even better than the book in that department. Certainly more emphasized And Gandalf's charge down the hill at the end, while a big change from the book, is an amazing moment. At that point in the movie I'm usually still pissed off about Dwarf tossing and shield surfing but that sunrise charge gets me every time...one of the best moments of the trilogy. Nobody knows I'm such a big Tolkien geek, so keep all this quiet...ok?

"I'm JJ Abrams, and I'm the personification of everything that's wrong with the American entertainment industry. And I go 'la di da di da' in the background! It's fucking distracting"! Gonna be a great tv series for sure.

Helm's Deep is amazing and the from what I understand PJ didn't direct any of it. His producer directed that shoot working nights while PJ directed Sam & Frodo scenes during the day. (You probably already know this I just find it interesting...)
