    by the dark shite

That's surprising! I remember a few years back there was some Music Awards show in London. Maybe it was held by one of the music magazines or something. Pattie Smith won some kind of lieftime achievement thing & there was a segment where the likes of Michael Stipe & Bono paid tribute to her. She came on stage, thanked Stipe & launched into the most vicious attack on Bono ever! I think it started with "Michael, thank you. Bono, fuck you!".

Mind you, he probably deserved it, if only for being a pretentious cunt.

Much like having The Who play half time at the Super Bowl, I really think it is time to move on. Where is Dave Mathews? Pearl Jam? The Killers? I know these guys are also old school but they must be better than the old geezers (Springsteen, U2, Fogerty, Joel) they are having play. Yes, I know it is the "Hall of Fame," but the younger bands could play with the older folks, can't they?

    by renonevada2000

While Dave Matthews, Pearl Jam and the Killers may be seen as recent innovators, their total impact and influence (or lack thereof) has yet to be seen, so THAT is why there is a waiting period between a band's first release and when they are eligible for the Hall Of Fame. (And dear God, do I dread the inevitable wave of pouty, yodeling singers/songwriters that are all going to be wearing their Dave Matthews inspiration rather proudly on their sleeves...)

I also hate "Bad to the Bone" and "Old Time Rock & Roll," and will immediately change the station if any of those songs happen to start playing on my car radio. I also refuse to see any movie which uses them (and "I Got You (I Feel Good)" by James Brown) in their trailers.

B_P_P: Complain about those two all you want (I actually respect both for different reasons) but there's a lower tier of musical shit. Ponder this: In 15-20 years, it is almost a slam dunk that Nickelback, Linkin Park, and Beyonce will be going into the ROck N Roll "Hall of Fame." Possibly on the same ballot. RenoNevada: I think Pearl Jam is eligible pretty damn soon. Blanket-Man: Don't know if your serious, but considering that: 1. They had a string of top ten hits. 2. Had a lasting impact on pop culture. 3. Justin Timberlake and NSync will probably go in someday. 4. Nearly EVERY FUCKING OBSCURE ONE-HIT DOO-WOP GROUP IN EXISTENCE gets voted in, it's hard to argue against the Monkees going in.

Again,I reiterate that the acts they have on this show are old and dated. The names I brought up were people who are more modern and relevant today. We can have modern, or far more recent bands play those of the past in tribute. Do we really think that someone who was popular when Reagan was president (28 years ago) can be anywhere near as relevant today? Really? I am sorry, Sprinsgteen, U2, Billy Joel, are not the trend setters of the Beatles, Temptations or even the Stones.

Isn't in the hall either. Their selection committee is a total joke. They keep putting in hip hop artists and mediocre rock bands (eg. Metallica). They need to either rename it the Music hall of fame, or reign in the genres back towards rock a little bit.

I remember a quote from Slash about meeting Keith Richards at the bar upstairs during an induction ceremony a few years back. Slash asked Keith why he wasn't out there and he said something to this effect:

"I'm here for rock and roll, not hippity hop."

I think that says it all right there.

Bono referred to her as something like "a sister, a lover, and a mother" and she took offence to the mother part. Told him to do his "own dirty work, and fuck off". Must admit that while I don't care for Bono either (though at least he outgrow that Cuban phase he went through in the mid'90's where he spoke faux Spanish the whole time), I never quite grasped what Patti was getting so offended at. The lover part I could have understood, but mother? Whatever. Doesn't alter the fact that Chris Martin is a wanker, and the fact that Bono called him out as one publicly means that he will always get my vote.

Seriously, time hasn't been very good to CSN. I did think Bea Arthur was dead and I never knew she replaced Graham Nash in CSN. Between them and the bad eye job on Jackson Browne, it is a little depressing watching these aged rock stars. Only James Taylor has aged remotely well of the first group.

    Tostito: Metallica mediocre??

    by kingninereturns

Maybe at times during their Load - St. Anger period, but certainly not before or after. Lightning, Puppets, Justice and The Black Album produced some of the best material the metal genre has ever seen. Their songwriting chops are some of the best in music. Hetfield is the premiere rhythm guitarist/riff writer of all time. How you can call this band "mediocre" is mind bending. Maybe their style isn't your cup of tea, but to say they're only mediocre at what they do is ridiculous. They are not one trick ponies like the group they are often lumped into (Anthrax, Slayer, etc.), but have incredible range and talent as far as writing in different genres goes. I could understand your comment if every song they wrote sounded like Nothing Else Matters or if every song they wrote sounded like Motorbreath, but this is simply not the case.

    by rob0729

They play two songs from All you Can Leave Behind, but only one from Joshua Tree. The former is a great album, but Joshua Tree is their only true iconic album. Well, maybe Actung Baby which have no songs represneted. Plus they play Vertigo which is a good, not great U2 song. They even play a song from their new album over classic tunes.

I agree with you, but they seem to be the band all the bands out there want to emulate. In the 60s and 70s, they stole from the old blues musicians. In the 80s and 90s they stole from the Beatles, Stones, Zepplin, Who, etc. Today, bands want to steal from Nickelback and Fall Out Boys. Apparently with the shitty music being put out today, the bar has been set pretty low of who to emulate.

Queens of the Stone Age, Muse, Weezer, Jack White like someone said above me, Franz Ferdinand, and even Fall Out Boy (TO ME... but I know they arent cool among us cool AICNers)... but if people always live in the past, of course nothing revelent will happen cuz theyre too stubborn to realize things change, and music is prone to change

But everyone in that band is incredibly talented. It's not really my kind of music in the slightest, but their live show proves they can wail. Pearl Jam will undoubtedly be included when they're elligable. But big time lolz at The Killers. And to say bands like U2 and Springsteen aren't relevant today is idiocy. They sell just as many if not more tickets per tour than some shitty Joy Division knockoff. They're just not all over crappy modern rock radio. RATM doesn't deserve to be in the hall of fame. 3 albums with only two of them being decent is not good enough. Metallica deserves it if only for influencing almost every single metal band since their inception. Name a metal guitarist that actually says he wasn't influenced by Hammet or Herfield, either directly or indirectly.

    My Point

    by nudeandaroused

My point behind this is that Springsteen, U2, Billy Joel, The Who, The Stones, all have lost their relevance from what they had previously. Wouldn't it have been better to have modern and far more relevant bands and artists (i.e. john Mayer, Pearl Jam, Green day etc...) sing old school songs? You can't possibly tell me that Simon and Garfunkel are anywhere near what they sounded like in the 60s or early 70s. Same with the Who, or Springsteen. They aren't the same. It is sad to watch them perform at ages 65+. They need to retire.

How does music lose its relevance?

Are you proposing that Pearl Jam and Green Day (the bands you suggested and both of whom I enjoy) symbolize rebel youth?

The reason why I want to see this performance is because all the heavy weights contributing to each other's work. There's a zillion other venues for "modern relevant bands" even though music doesn't lose its relevance.

Paul Simon is just as musically relevant as 40 year old Billy Joe.

Please reread what I said. The music does OT lose its relevance. The singers do. They aren't the same. And yes, songs that protest Vietnam mean far less today than they did then. The artists are well over 65. They don't sound or look like they did. The songs are timeless. They aren't. I suggested modern bands cover the timeless songs with modern interpretation, that's all.

Metallica did a great set, and they were playing to an audience that really wasn't there kinda fans, but they full on won them over by the end.I don't know if they showed it in the same sequence that the acts performed in, but it seemed fairly anticlimactic with Bruce taking so much stage time.Simon and Garfunkel were amazing, actually... 'Bridge Over Troubled Water' was a show-stopper.Great show, would have liked to see Eric Clapton, The Who, or AC/DC, but I'll take Stevie Wonder playing with BB King any day.

watch MTV Idol. No one wants to go to the HoF induction to watch garbage like The Killers and Green Day. I do find it kind of funny you mention Pearl Jam as being in the "young and hip" category when they're all in their mid 40s and Ten predates Hot Fuss by about 15 years. I do completely agree they deserve a spot in the hall, but they have a lot more in common with "geezers" like Springsteen and the Who than they do Brendon Flowers. People go to see the bands that are actually getting inducted into the HoF, not Avril Lavigne covering Fuel. And saying a song protesting Vietnam isn't as relevant today, especially given today's political climate, is completely asinine. Songs like "What's Goin On" mean just as much today as it did when it was written.

I'm 28 by the way, not an old fart. Music has evolved into something where musicianship, talent, and creativity take a back seat to the ability to sell records. Half the groups and individuals in the Rock and Roll hall from the 60's-80's probably wouldn't even get airplay in today's pop-idol dominated market. You think Bob Dylan, Neil Young, or even Zeppelin or Floyd would make it today? Maybe not; most would seem unmarketable to record companies today despite their musical genius. Hell, you don't even need to know how to sing or play an insturment anymore to sell a ton of records. It's sad. There are very few new musicians or groups in the last 10 years that I'd consider impactful in terms of their art and talent. None of them are anywhere near the god-awful top-40 mainstream.

Why do you keep clinging to the notion that playing music is like working construction or playing a professional sport? What, exactly, is it about age hampers one's ability to wiggle their fingers or use their vocal cords? Let's use Robert Plant as our example: he's not as pretty or as flashy (with rare exceptions) as he once was, so I'll grant you that he has lost something with age. However, he still has a stage presence and vocal range that eclipses even modern, younger acts. Age is a factor in the ability to perform certain tasks at a high level. Music is not one of those things. B.B. King will outshine John Mayer until he's 104...check out a Clapton Crossroads festival for a side by side comparison if you need one.

They deserve to be thrown in an incinerator. You guys are almost 40 years old. Stop wearing make-up and fucking retire. They were always a shit band. Good music is hard to come by these days. As long as people keep listening to nickelback and buttcherry and green day and seethed and slipknot and 3 doors down and kid rock and just about every other top 40 bullshit that's around, shits not gonna change. Some of the best albums go largely unheard of because of shit that gets stuck in the colon of good taste. You want to hear something good? Check out Fantastic Planet by Failure. That album came out in '96 and it still sounds better than 90% of the shit you're gonna hear. Everyone is entitled to their opinion, but that doesn't change the fact that you have shitty taste if you think Nickelback is in ANY WAY good for anything other than a landfill or a paper shredder.

    Bad Music since 2000-blame Sony

    by mgthedj

Just My 2 Cents. Sony bribed disc jockeys to play their artists starting about 1997. They gave them TVs, VCR's, DVD players, stereos, computers, Playstations. They also put them up in fancy hotels, with all expenses paid, for showcases and award shows: especially the CMA Awards and the Summer Fanfest in Nashville, the Grammys in NYC and LA, the Mtv VMAs in NYC and Miami, and the BET awards. Because of this, we had Jennifer Lopez and Jessica Simpson having success on the charts. In addition, they hitched their wagon the American Idol, and now guarantee to sign the top 2 finishers from every season, and usually sign one or 2 more from every batch of 12. That's about 12-15 acts that have received a major push from Sony in the last 9 years. So even though Sony was busted in 2004 for payola, through Idol they have kept their stranglehold on what gets airplay in the USA.This past decade should have been dominated by non-US acts, call it a 3rd Britsh Invasion, but they were shut out. The Internet helped, but it still did not stop the stagnation this decade.------later-----m

The pendulum went 180 degree's and went the opposite w/ all the boy banders and Britneys and Christina's et al. My senior yr of high school was '92 so I was the perfect age for the grudge movement. All those bands came out of nowhere and blew every bodies hair back! Sadly, when Kurt called it a day the whole movement went with it. And also there was a huge female element that same time w/ Fiona Apple, who was brilliant bytheway! Jewel, Sheryl crow, Alanis, even though I hated that crap you have to give her credit. Even if it was a knock-off of Liz Phair. Shirley Manson of Garbage and Courtney Love of Hole. Sarah McLachlan and the Lilith Fair tour. Lisa Loeb, Juliana Hatfield, Natalie Merchant, No Doubt was a great band. Lauryn Hill, Cowboy Junkies, Indigo Girls, Smashing Pumpkins, Pearl Jam, Blind Melon, Foo Fighters, Jane's Addiction, Beck, Radiohead, The Sundays, Belly, 311, Alice in Chains, Wilco, Weezer, Violent Femmes, Tomi Amos, The Cranberries, Flaming Lips, Sublime, Stone Temple Pilots, REM, Red Hot chilly Peppers, Beastie Boys, Guns and Roses, Pet shop boys, Phish, Social D, Luna, Oasis, Lenny Kravitz, Korn, Jeff Buckley, INXS, Green Day, Fugee's, George Michael, Dwight Yoakam, Dido, Counting Crows, Blur, Black Crows, Ben Folds Five, Aimee Mann, Nine Inch Nails, A Tribe Called Quest, Living Colour, Soundgarden, Primus, Sonic Youth, Screaming Trees, The Prodigy, Mad Season, Anthrax and the Pixies just to name some quite different types of bands during the '90's and coming of age for me. This decade doesn't even come close to the last five sadly. But the bands who performed for HBO are legends and none of these 'current' acts don't hold a candle to any of the old-timers.

You listed Oasis & Blur but there was a ton of great music coming out of england in the early nineties, all the manchester bands, stone roses, inspiral carpets, bands like Teenage Fanclub, Neds Atomic Dustbin, World Party, then there was all the shoegaze, Ride, My Bloody Valentine, Lush, Moose, some great Cocteau Twins records, St Etienne, Peter Gabriel was still doing solid work, Bob Mould's Sugar, Dinosaur Jr, Disintegration/Wish era Cure, so much great work. Now it's all bleh. I'm getting old.

    by montypigeon

You could count on one hand the number of bands who have done anything noteworthy. I personally blame Simon Cowell and his minions for producing below average crap and claiming them to be the messiahs of the music scene. As for the question regarding Zeppelin and Floyd making it today... Of course they would. In fact we need someone like them coming along to save the scene because there is not one person out there who can. They care more about the money than the music today. Where are the larger than life characters along the lines of Keith Moon? Instead we get some transexual called Lady Gaga who is more famous for changing into different wacky clothes. It really is shocking today how pitiful the output is, quite sad really.

Definitely true about the Brits. Why are they so damn good at music?? Anyway, it's fun talking about music on aicn. There seems to be a slight bit more consensus.

..if anything, AICN folk can talk music. Bring film into the mix and we all came here with a bit of a superiority complex, but I've read a few productive music discussions here in the past week or so. What fun.
