ABC Carves Out An Hour Of Its Thanksgiving For The July 17 Paul McCartney Concert At NYC’s New Citi Field!! Yeah Yeah Yeah!!

Published at:  Nov 28, 2009 11:36:03 PM CST

SPOILER ALERT !!

I am – Hercules!!

On Friday, July 17, Paul McCartney returned to the site of the Beatles’ 1965 Shea Stadium concert to perform 34 songs, 21 of which were Beatles tunes.

ABC tonight is devoting 44 minutes or so to the two-hour concert in a Thanksgiving-night special.

The set list from that night (it grows increasingly Beatle-y as it goes along):

“Drive My Car” (1965’s “Rubber Soul”)
“Jet” (1974’s “Band on the Run”)
“Only Mama Knows” (2007’s “Memory Almost Full”)
“Flaming Pie” (1997’s “Flaming Pie”)

Sir Paul was the ladies man of the group. and pete best was a better puller then paul. best had to go. Even though best formed the group with his mums help. Best´s mum ran the casbah club. But all that was airbrushed out of beatles history by Brian Epstein.

If PB was so great, like all the Ringo bashers have insisted for decades, why didn't he ever break out with another group? I'm not saying he sucked. But neither did Ringo, and he could get along with the rest of the group. apparently Pete couldn't or wouldn't.

    Paul McCartney..

    by emeraldboy

is a control freak. behind all that fab macca stuff. lies a ruthlessly driven individual. who saw the beatles as way to further his career. Macca always wanted to go all the way. and even talked to epstein about managing his career after the fab four had split. There are two stories about bests departure from the band. one is that paul was jealous his pullling power and the other goes something like this. for a long time noa best and brian epstien were lovers. When she got tired of epstiens controlling nature, she showed him the door and married the man who would become pete bests dad. Epstein, who never forgot a grudge took his revenge by setting the cavern club and giving the beatles thier first concert. noa best and her casbah club were written out of the beatles history completely and pete best got fired because epstien did not want to be reminded of his past replaced best with ringo starr. John Lennon never forgave Paul McCartney for that. McCartney hated lennons friends.

    by codymr

but if I had the power to choose which Beatles were to live, I would have gone with Lennon and Harrison over McCartney and Starr.

There is something slightly off putting about McCartney - even with all his good causes. I preferred the quieter, seemingly more thoughtful way of Harrison.

The reasons for Lennon are obvious: Despite being a bit of an egomaniac, you can't help but admire his talents and wonder what would have been if he had survived the assassination.

I told you this would sound horrible. Now I feel shame.

    by emeraldboy

two days before he was shot was deemed so shocking it has been aired. all his hatred for mcCartney, all of the stored bile came out. I saw a doc that was aired on the bbc and in it the real reason for the beatles split was that they were all fed up each other and of epstein. Epstein flew first class. but maintained that he flew economy. that final tour in the us demoralised all of them.

    Heres the problem with Locke

    by gooseud

It is a problem that many suffer from on these boards: assuming that because you yourself have an opinion, it must rule over all. There is nothing wrong with Locke not enjoying the Beatles, although it does make me wonder about one's sanity who cant listen to "Ticket To Ride" and find it enjoyable. Different Strokes for different folks. However, where the problem comes in is that 99.3% of the world's population disagrees. Now, that doesnt make Locke wrong. It just makes him in the gigantic, "maybe 179 other people in the world feel this way" minority. So, for someone to come in arrogantly spouting an opinion that 99.3% of the world disagrees with as if it was fact, and then acting douchey when people react......what did you expect? Obviously, you must have expected people to think your a retard. So, in summary, Locke isnt wrong for disliking the Beatles. BUT he definately is a prick.

epstein was a homosexual, so i dont know about that affair with pete's mum. also, he passed away a few years before the beatles actually broke up. a contributing factor to the souring relationships in the band had to do with choosing a new manager. paul wanted linda's dad, the rest of them wanted allen klein.

    by gooseud

Neither of them was ever as effective alone as they were together. John pushed Paul to be a bit more edgy then his natural "silly love song" tendencies would normally allow. Paul pushed John towards a bit more accesability then his Yoko-inspired sensibilites would normally be. Look at The White Album, the Beatles album generally considered to be 4 solo albums under one roof. Critical consensus has always been that that is the weakest and most uneven of the Beatles' work. MAke no mistake though, all of them were responsible for the breakup. Paul's hard driving ambition, John's crippling insecurity and anxiety, and George's feelings of being stifled. No one person was responsible, or even mostly responsible.

    locke's Mccartney statement

    by jjwalrus

is incredibly dumb. Not because he's bashing Paul or the Beatles, it's because it's so ridiculous. Either with the Beatles or on his own Paul has put together a staggering body of work. He had many, many hits throughout the 60's, 70's and 80's. He's STILL winning Grammys! You may not like it, but the charts don't lie. Paul is really the opposite of that guy living off his one hit. I get it how someone wouldn't like Paul, but you can't argue that he's a one hit wonder.

    Reply to Talkback

  • Very good article. Basically it laid the blame of the Beatles breakup on Lennon. I would tend to agree with it. Lennon wanted out... There were other factors at play as well but ultimately Lennon killed the Beatles. It wasn't very flattering to John but to be fair, I can't blame him for wanting out. A grown man tethered to his childhood friends...I can see why bands break up after awhile. It's natural. Paul steered that group through it's most creative years (Rubber Soul and afterward). I know Paul doesn't make for a very good dorm room poster but damn it if he isn't the greatest artist to come out of that group.

    by gooseud

Thats what I was referring to when I said they are all responsible. People think Macca was this greedy corporate stooge torturing the poor, pure artist Lennon. Far from the truth. The bottom line is that LEnnon was an emotional and mental train wreck through most of his life, and was a driving force behind the Beatles dissolution. AS far as his hatred of McCartney, depends on what day you asked him. On Thursday, he might hate him. On Sunday, he might talk about re-uniting the Beatles. He was an odd dude.

You're a fucking moron. The "Ringo Shuffle" was responsible for providing the backbeat to more hits than any band you're into and was aped (Oasis) to even more hits. If you are looking for innovation, go listen again to his beat on "Tomorrow Never Knows" and oh yeah, go choke on your own shit.

Ringo may not be as flashy as other drummers, but he was the rock solid foundation to the Beatles music. According to the Beatles Anthology, he was also the first to quit the group, but was convinced to come back by both Paul and John.

McCartney's comments on MJ pissed me off...

    by sk229

On Letterman a few months ago (did a few songs from the Late Show marquee on Broadway), McCartney said, "Here was a chance to restore the songs to their owners," regarding MJ not selling the songs \back to him. That is the most DISINGENUOUS FUCKING STUPID, UNSELF-AWARE THING I'VE EVER HEARD. So MJ said to Paul, "It's just business..." And Paul imitated him saying it in the high voice during the interview. Meanwhile, Harrison, Lennon, and the rest of Wings (not sure about Ringo) have ALL gone on record saying Paul is a fucking douchebag when it comes to business and all traces of friendship just go out the window. He is NOTORIOUS for being an astute and difficult businessman. So when the time came that he COULD buy back the songs, he and Yoko (probably worth a combined $200-300 million at the time), bid TWENTY SEVEN MILLION DOLLARS... for the Beatles catalogue... the whole shebang. MJ's bid was FORTY-SEVEN MILLION DOLLARS. Nearly double their's... so he made an astute business decision, one that Macca RECOMMENDED he make by saying, "You gotta get into publishing, that's where the money is." Meanwhile, McCartney owns the publishing to TONS OF OTHER ARTISTS, whose families are probably fucking poor and could use the royalties, and he gives Jackson shit for doing the exact same thing to him? And Paul ain't exactly starving either, he's worth over a billion dollars... probably the richest man in pop music. THEN, McCartney makes other offers over the years that we can only speculate how 'fair' they were, but he claimed on Howard Stern that it was 'fair market value'. DOUBTFUL, since MJ was more than willing to sell off half the catalogue for $97 million to Sony in the mid-90's. It just pisses me off that he shits on MJ's memory on Letterman when he has earned millions doing the exact same thing to less fortunate artists(as well as the other Beatles), but when it's done to him, it's just not right. Don't get me wrong, I love the Beatles, they're my favorite musical artists of all time, but that is just BULL-FUCKING-SHIT, and I wouldn't be surprised of Harrison and Lennon (wherever they are) were laughing their asses off and high-fiving Jackson for getting one over on 'the business-minded one'.

    by tourettesfreakinsyndrome

It's a little known fact that once he got the rights back, McCartney changed some of the Lyrics to honor his ex wife Heather Mills. They include, for example: "Norwegian Wooden Leg", "Baby, you CAN'T drive my car", "I wanna hold your leg" and "I saw her leaning there". The mans a genius.

I was 6 years old when lennon shot dead. I am fully realize how ground breaking they were. There are very few artists living who wrote some of the greatest of songs of the 20th century and those songs will be played and replayed endlessly. other song writers would be benny and bjorn from abba. but that is about it. or burt Bacharach and hal david. I cannot think of anymore right now. England in the 1960s and 1970s pretty much shaped the world musically. wasnt just liverpool, manchester, bristol, london. Scott walker too was a genius. There has never been a better interpreter of Jacques brel. he and irishman jack lukeman. Walker is the best.

Also Lennon's mother Julia was dead when John and Cynthia got married, she'd been dead for 5 years. I suggest you re-read Normans excellent biog and pay attention next time.

Also I agree its ridiculous to say that if you dont like the Beatles then you dont like music. That said without the Beatles and their influence many bands post 1970 wouldn't have existed without them. There is an saying, you either love the Beatles or you don't know the Beatles.

    Hey Poohguy!

    by i_max_u_mini

You're comparing a band that played their own instruments and didn't rely on choreography and "Sleight of Band" to capture an audience. Oddly enough, the best competition America had to offer was the Beach Boys. I don't recall the American public picking them apart - or does your argument rely solely on the Beatles being American. When I think of the boy bands of the '60s, I see the Four Tops, the Temptations, the Pips - as long as you don't include Gladys Knight - etc. Great songs and inspired choreography. These were the guys who pioneered the boy band craze. Tell me, PoohGuy, how many #1 songs have you written and performed? How many continuous decades have you been in the top 5 earners in the music industry? How many arena-sized concerts have you sold out? How many of your nearly 50 year old songs still sell? I'll tell you what - take a Beatles course at a nearby university. You may find that their music was a helluva lot more complicated than you thought. Just the opening chord of "A Hard Day's Night" was studied for decades before the secret was unveiled by a music professor. Sometimes it takes a lot of interesting steps to make something sound as simple as "Hold Me Tight" while including a lot of flourishes. Perhaps even a simple music appreciation course might do you some good.

while the rest of the beatles contributed something to culture even after they broke up. fab macca had wings, john had his very short solo career, which ended when he was shot dead. Harrison had his own massive solo career and as well as the travelling wilburries. ringo was...em...the...narrator...for thomas the tank engine. and later of course did that vary famous episode of the simpsons where he was painted by Marge simpsons who was a huge fan. Ringo starr only ever contributed two songs to the beatles yellow submarine and octupusscannon es garden in the shade. When you have a group which is dominated by two of the biggest songwriting geniuses of the latter half of the 20 century. It can be hard to get a look in. Harrison had to push very hard to get his songs included. Harrison was third song writing genius in that band. ringo not so much. but ringo will and for the rest of post beatle days beatle as the narrator of thomas the tank engine. Look i fully accept that there are two sides every story..

    by emeraldboy

I think that by and large the story of the Break up of the beatles was largely pinned on yoko ono for too long. I dislike yoko ono as much as the next person but it is utterly simplistic to say that she was solely responsible for the breaking up of one of the greatest bands of the 20th Century. if not the greatest pop band off all time. Re john Lennon. Cynthia lennon in 1978 wrote a slim volume about her ex husband which was castigated. three decades later she wrote another not long after Yoko ono had published hers. This is called book peddling. Where you write a book about your dead ex husband and in the book claim this and that and people only have her word to go on. In that book a much darker picture of lennon emerges. Regarding Ringo Starr, this is the same ringo starr who said the beatles fans were the best in the world and then was compelled to make a youtube video where he pleaded with fans to stop sending him stuff and then told any beatlle fan who wouldnt to fuck off..regarding Pete Best. Paul Called the Shots in the band and there was only one ladies man in the Group and that was Paul McCartney. though they were all ladies men. Ring and george took in wife swapping. Patty Boyd ended being mrs george Harrison and Barbara bach ended Mrs Ring Starr. That is what my Guitar gently weeps all about. McCartney and lennon were the two dominant song writers in the band. Harrison rarley gave interviews but his frustration at the dominance of McCartney and Lennon was well known. not long after the The famous wife swap that he and ringo engaged in. He handed Paul the lyrics of song he had written called My Guitar Gently weeps and McCartney was said to be taken aback at the beauty of the lyrics and included them on the album they were about to release. The best song Harrison ever Wrote was fool on the hill. At the center of the beatles was however an running row between McCartney the perfectionist control freak. and Lennon the song writing genius who regarded himself as the creator of the beatles and sole song writer. Lennon had a very sharp tongue and could be a very cutting individual hence the comment about the beatles being bigger than jesus. Finally to wrap things up in the Uk in 1980s long after the phoney beatlemania had bitten the dust to quote joe strummer of the clash. Paul McCartney did not have an easy time from the press. He was wealthy beyond his wildest dreams. Had been into of the biggest bands of the 1960s and 1970s was a solo artist of immense stature. He was the only artist to write, record, produced and perform the bond theme live and let die and compose the score. McCartney was seen in the 1980s as something of a joke. The frog Song didnt really help matter. neither did a ill fated appearance on Bread the carla lane classic comedy and that is where fab macca comes from. Linda herself got pilloried by the presss. All that ended when she died. Single biggest mistake McCartney made was not to listen to to everyone who told him to stay away heather Mills. A decision he later hugely regretted. But in the end McCartney has always been the one in control of the beatles. I am glad that he is at least paying tribute to his former bandmates. He should have left things as they were. Lennon and McCartney. The beatles remain one the greatest and most influential bands of the 20th Century and that is point I wont argue.

why did brian Epstein erase all history of the casbah club from the beatles history. Why did it take 40 years or more for paul McCartney to acknowledge it was noa best who gave them their first gigs. there is a beautiful coffee table photograph book which tells the true story of noa bests involvement. All the photographs in that book were deeemed lost untill, noa bests house was due to be demolished and pete bests sister rang him and told him to get down to house straight away. the removal men had found a trunk of noa bests belongings and in that were old photographs of casbah club. the very first venue were the beatles got their break. Pete Best put that book together. and they invited people to the book launch. the only person who didnt turn up was sir Paul McCartney. and he didnt even give a reason for not being there. bastard.

McCartney and lennon are the greatest song writers of the latter half of the writers. if one were to do a poll of the very best I would put lennon and McCartney top of the pile. with Benny and Bjorn from Abba 2nd. Maurice, barry and robin gibb 3rd. 4th Holland, Dozier, holland. 5th Shane MCgowan.

Ringo not only wrote the majority of Lennon/McCartney songs but he also secretly doubled his singing voice over Lennon's because Lennon's voice was so thin on record. Paul was to reveal all of this in his planned autobiograph, "Macca Do" but a threatened lawsuit from Ringo nixed those plans. You should really see the homemade documentary by Emo Phillips to really get a handle on all of the facts. It's a little hard to find but well worth the effort.

lennon was riddled with frustration, jealousy and bitterness. i mean he co-founded. one of the greatest groups of all time. but his record voice was thin. but if that is true about ringo writing the majority of the beatles songs. I am dumb founded. It does cement a suspicion that McCartney and lennon really hated one another. it explains why McCartney changed the song writing credits from lennon and McCartney and back again. Here is a weird one. for a long nobody knew i am the walrus was about. the walrus is debatable paul mcCartney. They attempte to write a play. which mcCartney abandoned after three days and one of the characters was called semolina pilchard. then there is that theory and I for one dont really buy it about McCartney drowning during the photo shoot for AbbeyRd Cover. people have read the following line as a clue"sitting in english garden waiting for the van to come" they say is a reference to McCartney dying. but it could be a pointed barb by Lennon about McCartney being creatively dead. who knows?
