More ZOMBIELAND!?

Published at:  Nov 25, 2009 11:57:40 AM CST

Merrick here...

This should've been posted yesterday, but I got tieed up prepping an AVATAR piece for next week. In short: Clint over at MovieHole spoke with ZOMBIELAND director Ruben Fleischer about whether or not we might get a sequel.

I had the chance to chat to “Zombieland” director Ruben Fleischer yesterday, who confirmed Sony are very interested in a “Zombieland” sequel. And he’s ready to go. The original cast – Woody Harrelson, Jesse Eisenberg, Emma Stone & Abigail Breslin – are also ready to slap another coffin dodger with the, er, ‘rule’ book. In other words, unless the events of "2012" come true... we'll be seeing a sequel in a couple of years.
But the most interesting development? Fleischer says the next film will likely be 3-D - yep, mother-hopping three-dimensional Woody vs. Zombie action!!

...says MovieHole HERE.

It should be noted that sequel shenanigans at Sony seem to be odd. Shortly after its release, we learned that some sort of DISTRICT 9 follow-up was in the wind - although now we're hearing that possibility is looking less likely. Conversely, we were once told a sequel to HANCOCK was maybe/kinda/sorta possible (but a long ways off) - a few months later we heard writers had been assigned to the film. In other words, who knows what'll happen with more ZOMBIELAND.

Have To Admit, Cameo Disappointed Me.

    by freebeer

I was one of the few people that saw this film without having the cameo spoiled for me and it was a big let down if I'm to be honest. There are couple of other actors I thought would have made funnier camoes playing themselves for this type of film imparticular, and the jokes were way too obvious, the last gag imparticular. (Though the bit where he was suited up in the kit of one of the most well known parts he played was kinda awesome).

    by freebeer

  • Nov 25, 2009 11:34:37 AM CST

Sequel to this is a very bad idea.

    by hint_of_smegma

What made the original a gem was the fact it was a zombie flick where all the main protagonists survived, and the point of the film was about finding family in whatever circumstances you're dealt. A sequel inevitably will force the writers to kill off one or two of the main four for drama and pathos.....and it will just be a bit of a cheap way to treat the story and the characters. Hint votes NO for this sequel, baby.

    SPOILER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    by freebeer

...Dunno if it's a spoiler to suggest a cameo for the next film, 'spose it's a spoiler as I'm ruling him out as having been the cameo in the first flick. Just playing it safe case anyone gets miffed. I think Bruce Campbell would make a terrific addition for the next movie. I klnow it's kind of obvious, but it would be all class seeing Bruce and Tallahasse squaring up, trying to out badass eachother.

    Agreed jimmay, zombies & vampires

    by freebeer

I'm conflicted. I'm sick and tired of vampire flicks but now that "Thirst" is out(and I made a promise to myself to see any film Park ever makes), I just don't know what to do. I loved, loved, loved Let The Right One In, but my vampire fatigue even tarnished my enjoyment of that movie somewhat the first time I saw it.

    many Zombielands to come:

    by future help

Zombieland was supposed to be a TV show on CBS. But when the network ditched the series — the fools! — Zombieland was made into a movie. Leaving tons of material for sequels. Which the writers revealed to us.

We spoke with Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick all about the long journey this zombie epic made from television to film. We learned what changed, and how many more zombie movies these two guys have in their brains.

How much did the film change over the years?

Rhett Reese: It's surprisingly similar, interestingly. It underwent multiple devolopment experiences. We wrote it as a TV pilot and sold it to CBS, and they had a lot of notes, which we addressed. And then when they decided to not make the pilot we unaddressed a lot of them. We went back to what we had, because we liked it more. In most cases. In a few cases we kept what they added because they did have some good notes.

Paul Wernick: Interestingly the last bit of the movie is essentially episode two of the TV show.

Rhett Reese: When we decided to expand into a feature we took what we thought supposed to be episode two and we plugged it in. And the big change that we made when it became a movie was that Ruben [Fleischer] our director wanted to set the third act at an amusement park. Originally it was set as a big huge fight at a gas station. But it's awfully similar strangely.

    Paul Wernick: Strangely and wonderfully.

Is there a Zombieland 2 in the works?

Rhett Reese: We don't know it all depends on how the first one does. So grab your friends, and make them cast their vote for Zombieland 2 by buying a ticket to Zombieland 1.

Paul Wernick: We've got some really fun ideas. And interestingly the last day of the movie, Woody told us that, "I generally never go back to a world, I don't love sequels, but this is one I would be honored to do." So pending the movie doing well and everyone being excited and loving it. As we hope they will, we'd love to do it.

Rhett Reese: And we'll take what we intended to be episode three of the television show and start movie number two.

Paul Wernick: We got a 23 episode season in our head. So divided by two that's about 12 movies in our head swimming around.

So that's Woody and Jessie Eisenberg tld us he was interested as well, let's make it happen! I wouldn't mind Zombieland 1, 2, and 3 at least.

For some reason I don't find zombies themselves tiresome. I find bad movies about zombies tiresome. The idea that Zombieland was intended as a series makes sense - the film felt a bit like a sitcom. I'd welcome another one.I'm also looking forward to the TV series based on The Walking Dead (but it's AMC, so hopes aren't high), and the adaptation of World War Z.

But yeah, Bruce Campbell as Ash (or otherwise) in Zombieland 2 would make a great combination.

Seriously, it was a 2nd rate National Lampoons Frikkin Vacation with added "Wonder Years" narration (but nowhere near as funny as Kevin's observations), with an undead hick popping up every now and then to get in the way. Seriously, premise and final curtain hurly burly aside there were no actual zombies in this movie to speak of. Maybe the makers were going for an ironic "we're all sleep walking through our lives" angle, but Shaun Of The Dead nailed that better. It just didn't have a kick ass cameo to hang it's marketing campaign off of.

3D DOESN'T ADD A DAMN THING!!! It's a cheap gimmick that adds NOTHING to the story, image, or development . . . it's NOT immersive . . . your'e wearing fucking glasses and can see black all around the screen. If the STORY isn't there in the first place, a third dimension won't do shit, and if the story IS there, then you don't need the 3D in the first place!!

    Toulon, you're partly right

    by sonny_williams

There have been way too many 3-D movies that use the effect only as a gimmick (to date, most 3-D films fall into this category). But if used in a natural, non-poke-the-audience-in-the-eye mode it can open up the screen to the truly immersive experience that is often promised but seldom delivered on. The best I have seen are a couple of IMAX underwater films that are as close to actual SCUBA diving as you can get without getting wet. The main problem with 3-D at its current technological level is how the director and DP choose to utilize it. The situation reminds me of stereophonic sound in its early days. Many early stereo recordings were total gimmicky shit, with totally unnatural mixes that were designed with no other purpose but to "wow" you with sounds coming from one side or the other, traveling through your head, ping-ponging from side to side... totally headache-inducing after a while! When someone (Cameron, I'm hoping it's YOU) finally does make a 3-D movie without the bullshit gimmicks and eye-gouging the game will be changed (hopefully) for good.

my reaction to Wedding Crashers. I saw Wedding Crashers and then also saw 40 Year Old Virgin, and 40 Year Old Virgin was so much more funny to me and my friend. I saw Zombieland and then (admittedly a different genre) Paranormal Activity). Well, shit. by ufoclub1977

Shawn of the Dead, American Werewolf in London, Natural Born Killers, the remake of Dawn of the Dead, The Squid and the Whale and it seems undeservedly lauded... there was nothing to it outside of how funny it is when they dump Murray's body, and the great opening sequence which outscoped the entire rest of the the movie. It had so much potential to have an interesting script that went places a zombie genre movie wouldn't, but no... they didn't put in any effort outside of those two places!

Could point with the stereoscopic . . . and your point about IMAX is where I'd rather things go . . . I'd MUCH rather watch an IMAX picture than a 3D one, and that IMAX doesn't need to be in 3D for me. If your entire vision is overcome, that's more immersive to me, visually, than any 3D I've seen to date. Coraline was the closest to ever come to actually helping the narrative, but even then, it really wasn't necessary.

Zombieland Rocked but no sequel unless you can top it.

    by tomonicker

It admittedly had it's flaws towards the middle and the end, so a follow up would have to be smarter, darker and funnier. I'm not disappointed that some sequels don't get made, honestly, especially if it's by some other shmuck, it's usually a ca$h grab anyway.

    I'm excited D-9 and Zombieland

    by bass ackwards

ushered in two new directors who should be able to carry their success into new films. I'm less excited if those new films are just sequels though.

    rule#5 -

    by fortunesfool

Sticking two episodes of a proposed TV show together does not make a well rounded screenplay. That movie, while occasionally fun, had no narrative structure at all. If they write a proper screenplay, i'll go see it.

Toulon, you need to see Up both in 2D and 3D

    by filmcoyote

before you scream 3D DOESN'T ADD A DAMN THING. The fact is you're right that there are a lot of films and studios (Monsters Vs Aliens, The Final Destination) that have a cynical approach that 3D will bring in audiences (fact is figures for Final Destination - a franchise that should have been dead in the water - prove it does at the moment) and they don't use the 3D to add a damn thing, as you say. But to say it can't add anything is nonsense. The use of 3D in Pixar's Up is stunning and adds to the story. Yes, Up works brilliantly without it, but in the 3D Docter and his animators use the depth of focus to reflect the emotions of the character and mood of the film. In sad moments the 3D goes flat, reflecting the lack of hope, joy, life really the characters are feeling. If you take the glasses off at these moments you can watch without them, it has gone 2D. Then in the moments of discovery, adventure, joy and excitement - the balloon chase, the discovery of Kevin, and meeting with Dug, the Junior Explorers badge presentation etc the depth really blows out. Up at no point uses the 3D as a gimmick (which even the splendid Coraline did a couple of times) to throw things out of the screen but does use it to add to the story. In other words 3D DOES ADD A LOT in this movie. It is still a great movie in 2D but you do truly get a new dimension (in more than one definition of the word) to the story and enjoyment and way you see (not watch) the movie in 3D. Like any new technology 95% of studios and filmmakers may abuse it but there are always a few who really know how to use it to the benefit of the film's artistry. While 3D haters may have a seeming endless list of soulless cynically made gimmicky rubbish to support their argument, Pixar's Up is all the rebuke the open minded need. On the whole i have not been impressed by the new 3D for the very reason that as you suggest it adds nothing, it's just been used to make weak films (like Final Destination) more attractive but Up (which i've seen in cinemas both in 2D and 3D) does truly prove that in the right hands it is a viable and dynamic form that can make a great film even better.

Zombieland was the one movie I saw this year

    by james_camera_on

that I wanted a sequel of (well, maybe "Moon" too). I loved the film, best comedy of the year and kind of zombie porn in a way. A sequel in 3-D might well work, certainly more so than a certain upcoming mega-bloat bore bomb the title of which escapes me. Look, they're making sequels of almost everything anyway. Might as well have one that has a chance of being good.

they say a sequel is coming to get people to rent this one

    by spandau belly

it's just marketting. they tell the public something is part of an upcoming series and people have this weird fatalist feeling that they might as well see the first one so they won't be out of the loop for the next couple years when the sequels are coming out and everybody is talking about them.

I really liked Zombieland ...If they have more stories.

    by mr dark

What the fuck ..I'm down for a sequel..even a trilogy.. As long as they don't fuck it up and stay with the same characters it could be worthwhile..It was the chemistry of these characters that really helped make this film enjoyable..at least for me..but that said if they don't have the story arc ...leave it be..It stands fine on its own..

There Won't Be A Sequel To Moon

    by freebeer

The story will be set in the same universe as Moon but won't be a sequel. Sam Rockwell said he would do a brief cameo but thats it, otherwise it's an entirely new story. On the Moon DVD the director said Mute will be "a spiritual sequel to Blade Runner."

Are they going to put zombies into this one?

    by greatone3

Aside from the end, a lot of the movie was the group driving through vast swatches of highway with no zombies in sight. And if there is a zombie plague, why is the guy walking his suitcase down a highway when Harrelson picks him up? And how they killed off Bill Murray was beyond stupid. Really disappointed with the film.

    Missing the point...

    by marshal_lannes

The reason Zombieland did so well...and that they would be insane NOT to do a sequel is that Zombieland is a Zombie movie that appeals to a lot of moviegoers who aren't neccesarily Zombie afficianados. So I say, as long as they can retain the spirit of the original...make away.

    ZOMBIELAND

    by thusspakespymunk

It starts serious - IE good. Then, they get to Bill Murray's house and you might as well shut it off, because they give in to teen romance and goofy schtick and ridiculous plot contrivances and the whole movie falls the fuck right apart.
