Here's A Pic Of Platinum Dunes' Freddy (Sorta!!)

Published at:  Dec 02, 2009 12:30:46 PM CST

Merrick here...

Figures.com has an interview with NECA's Head of Product Development, Randy Falk about upcoming product the company is developing. The article features an image of NECA's Freddy Krueger figure from Platinum Dunes' forthcoming remake of A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET. While not an actual photo of Jackie Earle Haley as Freddy, this image gives us one of our first (if not the first) clear look at how the character will appear this time around.

And, as teasers have already hinted, it's quite similar (in appearance, at least) to Robert Englund's Freddy.

Click the pic to jump to the article, which features more details about what NECA is up to (figs from Louis Leterrier's CLASH OF THE TITANS!) as well as a larger image of Freddy.

A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET is scheduled for release April 30, 2010. The Powers That Be may wanna consider changing that "Don't fall asleep" tagline. Might send the wrong message.

I was actually excited for this remake. I love the original Nightmare but the sequels ranged from mediocre to complete shit (Dream Child being on my worst movies of all time list). The prospect of Freddy actually being scary again had me excited but the more I see of the finished product, the more cautious I get about my optimism.

The challenge in reimagining an icon is that you can't change too much or the icon will be unrecognizable and the fans won't be happy, but you can't just have them look exactly the same or it's boring and lazy. This make-up finds a nice middle ground by coming up with a more realistic burn victim look while still being instantly identifiable as Freddy.

i'm sure it'll look better on the actual actor and in movement and all but yeah, after 25years of Englund's face and his makeup style, its such a drastic change. it looks realistic though so if that was the plan then kudos. But yeah if you just had the head, no hat or anything nobody would realize thats supposed to be Freddy. though i do like how they kept that little "crater" on his cheek, as different as the makeup looked throughout the movies, they always kept that part so nice little nod.

He SHOULD have freshly burned skin, rather than looking like he's had plastic surgery to fix the burns as best as he can. I don't think they considered that when doing this. He's dead. He doesn't GET reconstructive surgery!

    The script was useless...

    by mr. profit

Seriously, it was really pointless. The new ideas like the "Micronaps" were cool. The added deaths and the lead up to investigating what Freddy did was cool. And oddly the Nightmare Map was interesting. BUT, the script loses it when it includes certain deaths from the original, but doesn't include the little things that made the original work. The finale is also really fucking corny and the same thing that happened in Halloween Resurrection - hitting the killer while yelling "This is for (insert name of dead person here)" is fucking lame. To remove the resourcefulness of Nancy and making her not build booby traps to kill Freddy is a mistake. It worked in the original because she was smart enough to use her time staying awake figuring out how to kill him. This script she just follows the male lead and goes through the motions until she reaches the end.

    Not scary in design.

    by imp_fx_com

Burn victims are often rendered expressionless in the face, a homogenized ball of scarred flesh. We must remember that Freddy Krueger is a dream demon. He is evil and his look must reflect that. Unfortunately, they have not included the "evil" here and he appears bland or boring. Even with Jackie Earle Haley's performance, this design is a failure. A makeup artist rarely has the final say in the design. Producers are notorious for dumb ideas that actually harm the final product, therefore let us blame the producers. They also used the wrong sweater design in the film. And yes, the sweater is important. It proves that the producers didn't care enough to do their homework.

    by bouncy x

i assume you're talking about the fact that in the first movie the sweater arms aren't striped and completely red? i agree that woulda made it more in tune with being a remake but since the stripes on the arms appeared in every other movie and is part of his iconic look, makes sense why they used it here. i mean hell, until the dvd release back in 1999 i had no clue his arms weren't striped because the VHS was so dark.

It's one thing to see what Freddy looks like but it's a whole other thing to see the character in the movie and to see him move as well as the way that Haley will carry the role of Krueger. I don't hate the new look. It looks like more how a burn victim would look than the stylized look that Englund had in the other movies. I am quite curious to see this but I am not going with high expectations.

    by sk229

just how original that, uhhh... original design was. I mean, when you think about the fact that you got Michael Myers, Krueger, and Jason in a relatively short period of time, the 70's and 80's were just an UN-FUCKING-BELIEVABLE period for design in general... character design, production design, model design, costumes. It's like they hit that shit out of the park every time. And I mean down to the cartoons of the 80's... we're getting movies based upon them 20 years later not because of the fascinating stories, but because even in silly shows like Transformers and G.I. Joe, most of the characters are immediately original and striking and recognizable. Fucking shame we get what we get now... and if you look through most portfolios on a site like deviart, everything is repetitive and has either an anime or a Gears of War feel... just the same, shitty, non-differentiated characters over and over and over again. Awesome artists, just almost impossible to find anything immediately striking. Where's the talent to do this anymore?

    by filmcoyote

the look of the villain based on a toy design? You don't get much of an idea from the footage seen so far and if they play it like Craven did in the original (as they should) we'll mostly see him in shadow, silhouette etc not in close-ups like in the sequels. I expect the film to suck because, unlike Friday the 13th, this is in the Halloween school of perfect originals. They can't match it why try? The Friday the 13th boys were okay because they weren't working from anything much beyond a cool villain and nostalgia.

I mean, I know that seeing a purposely well lit picture of an inanimate object that represents an animate living entity that will be lit appropriately and will be given nuance and depth by the very virtue that is a moving object and will be placed in sets and on location can't possibly represent what it will look like on film but I hate things so much that I judge this and find that it sucks because it does!
