Want To Hear Clips From James Horner's Score for AVATAR?

Published at:  Nov 24, 2009 2:14:32 PM CST

SPOILER ALERT !!

Greetings! ScoreKeeper here targeting a flock of audio clips from James Horner's score for AVATAR (2009). I have to admit, I'm not a fan of listening to audio clips myself and have not done so in this case. I don't even really like listening to the score ahead of actually seeing the film. However, some folks are itching to be the first to wrap their ears around whatever morsels of score drop from the table of Cameron. And so, for you whom I speak of, I bring you these clips.

Are you ready to start the ear-bleeding? If so, click HERE.

*Additional note: A couple of readers have pointed out that the track titles contain possible spoilers.

I like scores as much as the next guy ...

    by manifestchaos

... in fact, probably more. I have all kinds of soundtracks, from Trevor Jones' score to MERLIN (the TV movie starring Sam Neill) to Shigeru Umebayashi's work on HOUSE OF FLYING DAGGERS; from the low-end, like Riz Ortolani's CANNIBAL HOLOCAUST score to the high-end, including past work of James Horner's such as GLORY and A BEAUTIFUL MIND.In short, I love orchestral music, and I am even a fan of Mr. Horner's work (among many, many others), but unless you're offering me a link to download the entire score of AVATAR -- which I would happily and thankfully do -- why would I want to waste my time on a bunch of lame 20-second clips? I can think of few things more silly and useless.

I was a big fan of Horner in the late 80s and thru most of the 90s. His work has been so below average for a LONG time. I like what I'm hearing here, though. He's worked on this for a long time, and the theme sounds stirring and should be powerful along with the movie. I'm excited about enjoying a Horner score again.

This just got even dumber than it already was. So much for being surprised by an unexpected ending. Until now I was kind of holding out hope that Cameron would take us in a totally unexpected direction in the third act, and that's the only reason he's letting everyone assume Avatar is doing to be DANCES IN FERN GULLY. Guess not.

    by thall_joben

Sadly the more I see (and hear) of Avatar the less I'm interested. I'd put money on the temp track having been Zimmer's Gladiator score with a little bit of 'Deep Forest' for that wholesome, easily digestible tribal vibe. It all sounds way too familiar. 'I see you' Jesus, that track makes you wanna hurl, how corny and unimaginative. Such a shame, there are so many fantastic stories out there that Jim could be turning his talents toward, this plot seems like such a waste of his filmmaking skills. Certainly looks like we won't get a movie as good as Terminator or Aliens (no matter how many familiar faces he puts in there) out of him till his gets his 'I'm always right' ego in check, and that could take a while. I'd give him a lot more faith if he'd just stop acting like it's essential to be an asshole to make a great movie - he wears it like a damn badge of honor. Plenty of other directors make amazing films and manage to avoid being a prick while they're about it. If he uses that 'it's like going to war' analogy again I'll throw up! No it isn't, sure it's difficult but try getting shot at on the front line for a while and tell me it's anything like as tough as what those folks go through. Someone brings him coffee for fucks sake - JIM - YOU'RE NOT AT WAR!

    by manifestchaos

I was just looking at my playlists and it popped up. I only ever listen to two songs from the Home Alone soundtrack, "carol of the bells" and "o holy night" because they're really nice choral music, not really standard orchestral fare. I probably shouldn't have included it on the list, as I have no idea or recollection of what the rest of the soundtrack sounds like.As for LOTR, I'm just gonna have to say I unabashedly love it. "Concerning Hobbits" (which sounds like one of your prime offenders) is awfully good working music, even if it's a little saccharine; but "The Bridge of Khazad-Dum" and "Forth Eorlingas" from TTT are two of my all-time favourite musical cues!

Ugh! Horner is a hack, always has been.

    by mrtotality

Now granted, most of the greats take queues from larger classical works (Williams, Silvestri, Morricone, Goldsmith - in his much younger days), but Horner is just a hack plain and simple. His Willow hero theme is a complete rip-off of Schubert's Rhenish symphony, almost note for note, and it's even in the same key. I didn't mind Krull as it had enthusiasm, Glory, while simple, was effective, and Aliens did an admiral job of providing atmosphere to a terrific film. But I can't think of a single Horner effort I've liked outside of these (and I only just 'like' them).

Come to think of it, I don't remember the last time when a film soundtrack really made me sit up and take notice. Much better stuff coming out of game soundtracks lately. I'm still surprised the Jeremy Soule hasn't been picked up for a big Hollywood blockbuster. His a tad fanfare happy but his sensibilities would've been perfect for this film.

    Just absolutely terrible

    by chesterfield slacks

Even at 20 seconds, you can hear how dated it sounds. Horrible, cliches, predictable rhythmic structures ("The People" clip features musical motifs heard in eco-friendly animal documentary titles from 90's Discovery shows!) Bland grandiose swells and cymbal washes, and that gawd-awful "Celine-Titanic" ear-stabbing drivel of a finale is so puppy-crushingly obvious and painful, it almost makes me want to watch the movie with industrial earplugs. This just confirms my worst suspicions that Avatar will be the last of the 90's Sci-Fi blockbusters, a visual post-card perfect imagining of what the best 90's sci-fi movie could have been. Goodbye old Hollywood. Hello 21st Century imagination. Bring on the 30 million dollar or less movies with thought and originality.

Here's the deal on Horner (for me).

    by the_genteel_gentile

He's consistantly guilty of both self cannibalization as well as just outright plagerism...and he's also responsible for at least three of my top ten favorite film scores of all time. You simply can't convince me it gets any better than Glory, Apollo 13 or Braveheart. Titanic and Legends Of The Fall are mighty tastey as well. I'd go so far as to say that Horner and Hans Zimmer, despite their detractors, are the two best composers for film ever. I mean that they really understand the language of film and how best to accompany a picture, an edit, a sequence or an emotion, really...better than anyone. I know that's a bold sentiment, but take a look at the scenes in Glory when Denzel is being whipped or when Broderick comes outside to find that the 54th all decided to stay and fight. Or the execution scene at the end of Braveheart, or the speech, or the montage about the growing legend of William Wallace...(you get my point, right). I'd say James Newton Howard and Thomas Newman are right underneath them in this respect. You see because the fact is that as brilliant as Williams and Goldsmith are, they often over orchestrate to the point of killing a moment instead of enhancing (The Patriot), and I'm convinced Morricone hasn't even SEEN most of the films he's credited for as composer (watch Mission To Mars as proof), he simply writes brilliant music that then get's put on a film at some point (it's the Peter Gabriel effect). I'd totally agree however that Horner's been pretty far off for quite a while. I'd say his last totally satisfying effort was A Beautiful Mind. Yeah, Apocalypto was decent, as was The Life Before Her Eyes, and I give him credit for what he was able to cobble together for Troy on such short notice after Gabriel Yared's score failed to impress test audiences. Sure All The King's Men was derivitive Horner, but I still liked it. I can't say A New World was a great score, mostly because it's almost entirely absent from the final film, Malick having replace much of what Horner wrote with classical Wagner. I realise this is a contiversal stance among film music fans. I'm no novice though, I literally have tens of thousands of Film Scores. My favorite working film composer is Thomas Newman. I'm a fan of all the old school godfathers like Rozsa, Newman, Tiomkin, Rota, Waxman, Herrmann ect. I'm also well aware of the classical masters such as Orff, Wagner, Holst, Bach, DeBussy and so forth, that greatly influenced modern film music composition. And I'm not prejudice in the least at the elecronic guys like John Carpenter, Vangelis, Tangerine Dream, Harold Faltermeyer, Brad Fiedel and certainly even Goldsmith and Zimmer (most definitely). So yeah, I'm just saying that I'm no layman, I felt the need to at least try to legitimize my opinion before getting completley flamed and being accused of being a tourist. now feel free to feed me to the dogs.

Honestly I wouldn't expect anyone who gets that nasty in the pasty to really understand the kind of emotionally charged tension and almost lyrically transcendent beauty that imbues the musical soundscape of Apollo 13. There's a near euforic meloncholy that pulsates through that entire score. It's truely majestic. But I suppose You'd have to be a whole lot less nasty, especially in the pasty, to hear it. :)

Boy, did you ever misinterpret what I said. I'm lamenting the fact that the big VFX tentpole movies are no longer appealing to the next generation. I work and live with teens. They could care less about quality of image or big budgets. We are in precisely the same situation we were in the 70's when the Hollywood dynasty saw that big-name actors with huge salaries were no longer a box-office draw and "indy" films like "Easy Rider" with no names and small budgets were making money. If you have been reading the industry trade papers lately, then you'd know what I'm talking about. The money goes to safe tentpole films or very cheap indy films. The middle ground is no longer a financial option. This was the pattern in the last recession. So out of those indies came Spielberg, Lucas, films like Bullitt, etc. It was a time of experimentation and innovation. It spawned a new wave. I'm hoping for a new wave to knock the Michael Bays and Rolland Emerich out of business. The obscene wads of money spent on tried-and-true crap only diminishes the chances of yet unimagined futures. Let's look ahead instead of repeating the past!

    by todaysfate

The problem is in fact the teens of today. I don't know what happened to them, but there is a reason that ET still maintains the record for most weeks at number one. And that TITANIC still maintains the highest gross of all time and has the most consecutive weeks at number one. Some of you simply need to face the fact that James Cameron is more of a Walt Disney like visionary whose ultimate goal here is to put a tear in your eye, soften you up with a little bit of romance and to maybe even restore some childhood wonder ... that’s right ... innocent, WHOLESOME childhood wonder. I for one am glad that there is even the remote possibility that a movie is finally about to come along that will actually inspire a NEW generation of kids in a way not seen since the likes of Titanic, ET or Star Wars. Because the current crop of teens has been ruined by the likes of South Park, Grand Theft Auto and Jennifer’s Body. I thought Peter Jackson would do it with King Kong, but because we have a collective case of ADD we couldn't get past the running time. Whatever.

AVATAR will be like the ANTI-revenge of the fallen. The only reason Bay and company ruined Revenge of the Fallen with all that potty humor was because they had some sort of midguided assumption that thats what the teens/kids of today wanted to see. And you people that seem to want to bash anything but the hard core, kick ass, rated R crap that barely appears to a small pecentage of the population anyway. Deal with the fact that cameron wants to make a film you can take your kids or your parrents to see, not your drinking buddies.

Yeah that's cool man. Would be nice to have a conversation here for once

Well nobody has shot a whole movie like this live action before. It's new built camera technology for a start and if this hits big it goes without saying that i'm sure other film makers will jump on board and use it in other new and interesting ways. I don't share the hype and opinions that it is to the extent the industry think it will be just yet. Maybe. time will tell. The main thing I am interested in is what Weta have done under the direction of Cameron. It's hard to argue they are not the most creative effects house out there right now at this level, always pushing the envelope with each project. If people agree or not doesn't change the fact it's a new way of making movies. With 3D tv's coming next year and even tv shows and sports events already planning shoot in 3D, it's obivous to see why it is a big deal isn't it? Let's just hope it's a great movie despite all of that though.

    by drsambeckett1984

I have no issue with the 3D, although I really do think it is a gimmick that will go away just the same as it did in the 70s&80s. I think it remains to be seen if 3D is really here to stay.
I also agree with you that the designs are incredibly cxreative, the main problem for me is the way the film has been over hyped.

But great effects and technology, do not make a great film in my eyes. From what we have so far heard about the story, it really doesnt sound very inspiring. The whole Fern Gully/Dances With Wolves comparisions are true to a certain point, I was expecting a big sci fi movie and that doesnt look like what we are getting.

Maybe that says something more about my expectation of the film itself, but I think the radical hype put out before anyone had even seen a trailer, has soemthing to do with it.

    Weta are awesome though.

sure that's your opinion. That's cool. But it's still a big deal in movie making for the industry. The difference with old 3D and this new 3D is the amount major corps are putting into pushing it forward. It's here to stay a lot longer than most here would like.
In regards to the hype, to be fair Cameron and the studio hardly released anything at all to begin with. The media and the geeks created the hype before a teaser trailer was released if we want to place any blame on that.

Karl Jenkins pretty much originated that classical/world beat/choral sound. Conan - Glass - Trek - D9 Vs. Moon - Blue Man Group

    by the_genteel_gentile

I love Basil Poledouris' score for Conan: The Barbarian, but I've always found the actual orchestration on the original recordings to be a little underwhelming. Budgetary issues no doubt. This may have already been done, but it needs a really good re-recording by either The City Of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra or John Debney (both of whom do the most steller rerecodings). As any fan of Phillip Glass knows, the problem with Glass' minimalist style is that it kind of all sound exactly the same. That said, my favorite Glass score is Kundun. I much prefer Michael Nyman's minimalism personally. I know everyone likes to say Horner's score for Whrath Of Khan is the best in the series, but I whole heartedly disagree. Goldsmith's score for The Motion Picture is breathtaking and by far my favorite. In second place I'd actually go with The Undiscovered Country by Cliff Eidelman (very underrated). I loved both Distict 9 and Moon, at present they're my two favorite films of the year so far, with Moon slightly edging out D9 for top honors, followed by Coraline, Up and The Hurt Locker. But as far as the scores go between D9 and Moon go...well, I think that my be why I feel Moon edges out D9 for me. District 9's score is totally non impactful. It's pretty much a Media Ventures/Remote Control (Zimmer's gang) generic rip-off. I mean, it's on par with Ramin Djawadi's Iron Man for uninspired. Meanwhile Clint Mansell provided a fantastic, lucid, hypnoticly evocative, atmospheric soundscape for Moon. There for I declare Moon the winner by a hair. Of course it's still early, hopefully Avatar will have my top slot will all is said and done. Blue Man Group poviding a song could be intesting (or just weird), but not a score. Honestly, if ever a movie called out for the new age sounds of Enya or Enigma, it would seemingly be Avatar. Oh well, guess I'll just have to live with Leona Lewis (at least it's not Linkon Park).

Imagine how much better this score would be...

If Jerry Goldsmith were still alive, or even if Thomas Newman did it. The movie may be good, but this score is going to be totally forgettable. I still can't forgive Horner for getting an Oscar nomination for Aliens, when he used - note for note and complete - the Gayane Ballet Suite by Aram Khachaturian - without giving it any credit. I also can't forgive him for inflicting Celine Dion in every shopping mall and overheard radio after Titanic. Although, that may be Mr. Cameron's fault, who loved her version of that song going "ond an on" as she sings it.
