FOX is announcing premiere dates of new and returning series as well as revisions to its 2009-2010 midseason schedule. FOX also has ordered a full season of the sophomore drama LIE TO ME.

January starts off on a high note when the ninth season of AMERICAN IDOL, television's No. 1 series, begins with a two-night premiere Tuesday, Jan. 12 (8:00-10:00 PM ET/PT) and Wednesday, Jan. 13 (8:00-9:00 PM ET/PT). Immediately following AMERICAN IDOL on Jan. 13 (9:00-10:00 PM ET/PT), FOX unveils the not-to-be-missed series debut of OUR LITTLE GENIUS, a new unscripted series that features America's most gifted kids as they are tested with some of the most challenging and difficult questions that only a remarkable little genius could answer.

A special extended primetime event on Sunday, Jan. 17 kicks off with the NFC DIVISIONAL PLAYOFF (4:00 PM-CC ET live/1:00 PM-CC PT live), which leads into the explosive series preview of HUMAN TARGET (8:00-9:00 PM ET/PT), the new full-throttle, action-packed drama about a unique private contractor (Mark Valley) who will stop at nothing even if it means becoming a human target to save his clients. The special primetime event concludes with the first installment of the pulse-pounding two-night, four-hour premiere of 24 (9:00-11:00 PM ET/PT). The season premiere of 24 clocks in for two more hours of action Monday, Jan. 18 (8:00-10:00 PM ET/PT), and the season premiere of HUMAN TARGET airs Wednesday, Jan. 20 (9:00-10:00 PM ET/PT) following AMERICAN IDOL (8:00-9:00 PM ET/PT).

On Sunday, Jan. 10, FOX presents a special SIMPSONS event beginning with the animated series' milestone 450th episode, "Once Upon a Time in Springfield" (8:00-8:30 PM ET/PT), in which BART (Nancy Cartwright) and MILHOUSE (Pamela Hayden) try to help KRUSTY (Dan Castellaneta) regain his popularity after network executives force him to restructure the format of his television show by hiring a female sidekick, PRINCESS PENELOPE (guest voice Anne Hathaway). Then, Academy Award-nominated filmmaker Morgan Spurlock ("Super Size Me," "30 Days") will present The Simpsons 20th Anniversary Special: in 3-D! on Ice! (8:30-9:30 PM ET/PT). The documentary special examines the global phenomenon that is THE SIMPSONS and serves as the momentous conclusion to the "Best. 20 Years. Ever.," a year-long global celebration of THE SIMPSONS that launched in January 2009.

Chef Gordon Ramsay steps out of his own kitchen to serve up a new season of KITCHEN NIGHTMARES on Friday, Jan. 29 (9:00-10:00 PM ET/PT). Each week, Chef Ramsay will try to help turn around some of the most unsanitary and unsuccessful restaurants in New York, New Jersey, Florida and California on the verge of closing their doors forever.

PAST LIFE, a new drama series inspired by the book "The Reincarnationist" about detectives who investigate the world of the unexplained, will bow with a two-hour series premiere Thursday, Feb. 11 (8:00-10:00 PM ET/PT) and will make its time period premiere Thursday, Feb. 18 (9:00-10:00 PM ET/PT).

SONS OF TUCSON, the new family comedy from Emmy Award winner Todd Holland ("Wonderfalls") about three young brothers who hire a charming, wayward schemer to stand in as their father when their real one goes to prison, debuts Sunday, March 14 (8:30-9:00 PM ET/PT).

AMERICAN IDOL sings on Tuesdays (8:00-9:00 PM ET/PT) when it makes its time period premiere Jan. 19 followed by the time period premiere of OUR LITTLE GENIUS (9:00-10:00 PM ET/PT), and 24 syncs up for its time period premiere Monday, Jan. 25 (9:00-10:00 PM ET/PT).

After its fall finale Wednesday, Dec. 9 (9:00-10:00 PM ET/PT), GLEE returns from its interlude with a score of all-new episodes on a new night beginning Tuesday, April 13 (9:00-10:00 PM ET/PT). FRINGE delves into its winter finale Thursday, Feb. 4 (9:00-10:00 PM ET/PT) and then resurfaces with new cases beginning Thursday, April 1 (9:00-10:00 PM ET/PT). I just gotta know one thing - with regards to the return of "24" - how many times can they do the "retired Jack is compelled back into duty" storyline, since he's been done with CTU (and CTU itself has been done) for at least a season?

    by henry fool

Should be set in Phoenix. Because anyone who's ever been to Phoenix knows what untapped potential for storytelling it has.

It would be so cool to have Jack Bauer face the zombie apocalypse. A great way to give a wink and a nod to the series' utter refusal to be ashamed of redux's and ridiculous plot continuity. And I say this freely acknowledging that its one of my favorite shows.

    by v'shael

But the US version of the show is piss-poor. They force Ramsay to maintain the aggressive persona, instead of letting him be himself. And the constant voice-over is fucking annoying.

The UK version of the show is INFINITELY better.

Never mention David Palmer and his ilk. Pretend Jack has been working with CTU for the last few years, etc.. Because the longer that show goes on, and the more it relies on its own history, the more fucking stupid it becomes.

    by hanselo

.... pick a cancelled series out of the bin and re-start it. It would save a turn of money having to pay lots of people to spin ideas and be creative. They could just take an established format such as 'Journeyman', 'TSCC', 'Firefly' etc. and simply re-start it. Can't get all the original actors? Easy, make it a smaller more intimate affair focusing on a smaller picture and just a reduced cast.

Glee going away for so long is insane. Of course the hardcore fans will come back but the general public will think it was cancelled. They pay these idiots for these type of program decisions. Not only that, they then put it up against Lost's final season. I'm a huge Glee fan but there's no way I'm missing an episode of Lost's final season.

All the other networks are going into hiatus during that time. The 2006 Winter Olympics were a ratings disaster. Granted it was partially because of the time delay, but other than figure skating the winter olympics is usually a dud ratings wise.

not to bring up an old point

    by ryanbraun14

i've read a bunch of posts for talkbackers who were angry about dollhouse getting renewed over Terminator SCC. Honestly, I would have taken my chances with Whedon. However, I was really hoping that Terminator Salvation would make me forget about the show, except it only reminded me how much it sucks that it got cancelled--i've had T:S on my computer for months and months now, and i just can't bring myself to watch it again. WHAT THE FUCK was McG thinking??? TSCC had what i wanted: the mythology of the show and John Connor's rise to become a hero. WHAT WAS THE POINT of the new Terminator movie??? its like they TRIED to not include every awesome possibiliy that they could have used... i wanted to see how JOhn Coinnor got where he was in the start of the movie... T:S had no point... and the worst idea for a story, ever (not counting the dick grayson pre-robin circus show... puke) was essentially making marcus, a character who we don't care about at the start and still don't care about at the end, the star! Fuckin idiots.

why are so many people suprised that their shows are going on a hiatus??? EVERY show takes a break this time of year. I'm not worried about fringe and feel alot of you guys are jumping to conclusions and have skipped the cancellation speculation and have gone straight to the 'fuck you fox execs.' I hate the fox execs more than anyone, but on a case by case basis, innocdent until proven guilty. (to make a sweeping generalization of the entire network itself: GUILTY... VEry, VERY GUILTY)

    by big jim

While I can understand networks not wanting to program original shows against it, they can all easily come back by the end of February without having to go up against it.Glee being off the air until April does explain why (other than a quick cash-grab) Glee is putting out a "Volume 1" DVD. Those who missed it in the Fall can catch up in time for the Spring.I prefer shows taking one long hiatus, then airing the remaining episodes with little or no break. I really hate the sporadic airing of a dozen or so episodes over 5 months. Three weeks on, one week off, one week on, three weeks off, five weeks on, one week off, etc.

    kitchen nightmares

    by dradis contact

I get the feeling on that show and on Hell's Kitchen to some extent that they're keeping all the interesting stuff off camera. Like for example, why are these people in the restaurants so fucking deferential even when they seem to oppose Ramsay's methods with every fiber of their being? Instead of getting into the arrangement Ramsay must have with all these places, we get a commercial break and scenes of abject contrition. The HK contestants sometimes show up unable to cook. Then we see some yelling and suddenly the contestants know a thing or two about French cooking. If the produces of these shows put the interesting stuff in, they would bear more than one viewing.

    Kitchen Nightmares

    by homer sexual

I loved the British version. The US version is decent, but like Hell's Kitchen, it is too overly exaggerated and feels staged sometimes.

One example: The did A Votre Sante, an LA restuarant not far from my place and showed Ramsey running down the street to a pharmacy....except that there is no pharmacy anywhere near that restaurant, so who knows where he went? But my biggest beef is he cranks the asshole level up past 11 for the US version, just more than necessary and clearly forced.

The "Christmas Special" pilot doesn't really count. If you REALLY want to get anal, then the 20th anniversary should have been in 2007 (the Tracey Ullman shorts started in '87).And following the IDIOTIC moving of Fringe to the overcrowded Thursday night with a TWO-MONTH HIATUS proves that Fox is deliberately trying to kill one of it's most promising shows, which baffles me, You have a witty X-Files successor produced by current pop-culture wunderkind J.J. by ryanbraun14

In another talkback there was some discussion about how awful heroes is--but i'm reading a book and i had to share this. The book is called 'how not to write a novel.' i enjoy these books because they can be as funny as they can be helpful. So, (without transcribing the example and explanation) one of the topics for the chapter about pitfalls in a novel regarding villains is termed:"But he loves his mother!" The people writing heroes are supposed to be damn good writers to have earned the highly coveted and competitive job of being a writer, yet they break a simple rule that is clearly shown in a novel for beginning writers... sheesh...

Does everybody in the USA watch everything whilst it's on at that time?

Surely there are recording devices. Or On Demand TV? Or the equivalent of Sky+? Seriously why is a show doomed because its up against another? Watch one - record the other. Do TV execs think nobody is watching their show because they aren't watching it when its broadcast? I hardly ever watch "live" TV anymore - record what I want on the Skybox - watch it whenever I feel like. If thats how ratings are gathereed then reality crap will always be viewed more than "genre" shows. Its not rocket science. Whats going to sell more on DVD - "Lost" or "The Best of "America's got (no) Talent?" (marginally worse than the British version - as we don't have the Hoff. Sadly you do get Piers Morgan.)

Transporter (1) was solid, in my opinion. it was what it was. the second was absurd and the third even moreso. But that third one... MAN I was pissed off and even yelled at my TV screen in hopes that some way, some how the director could hear my rage. Why was I so angry? Because they've got a guy like Statham who is one of only a handful of remaining big time actors who is capable of showing off his awesomeness in action scenes... but that third movie for reasons i cannot fathom, decided to resort to the up close and millions of quick cut .2 second clips garbage that could make Tom Cruise look like he can kick ass. I mean, PULL THE FUCKING CAMERA BACK AND LET STATHAM DO HIS FUCKIN THING! That director fucked up what (from a directorial standpoint) should have been a damn lay-up. Nobody goes into that movie expecting acting, plot or anything other than action--but in this case, the viewer wants to see specifically Statham's brand of action.

    My Thoughts On GLEE -

    by thusspakespymunk

Fox hates, fucking hates, absolutely fucking hates GLEE. Think about it - they've got a show with positive gay role models, singing, dancing, joi de vie, nonviolent heroism, positive and uplifting messages about tolerance of differences and human dignity. Think about how much Glenn Beck must fucking HATE GLEE. Think about how much Bill O'Reiley must HATE GLEE. My belief is that there are some contracts going on that say GLEE can be pulled if it gets stinky ratings, and they are deliberately trying to bury it to the limits of their ability because they did not count on it being a hit and it turned out to be one. Wow, they suck. Fox is fucking nihilistically evil.

American Idol kills all at Fox

    by dougmckenzie

To accomodate that ratings darling, but unwacthable to genre audiences beast. Fox gladly screws over two nights of the week. Idol airs what 3 months? Fox is willing to nuke the other 9 months of the year to sit pretty with that big boy. Fringe is off tuesdays or wednesdays because Fox wants to leave 2 hours on Tuesday and 1 hour on Wednesday open with non-hit shows no one will miss while they get pre-empted for AI. They were probably hoping that Fringe and Bones would sit nice on Thursday as they try to build an audience outside of AI and House on a different night that they always fail at. Glee isn't my boat, but it is Fox's biggest new show since House and they just don't know what to do with it. AI gives Fox the biggest show on TV, but it completely fucks them over everywhere else. Damned if you do, damned if you don't.

Maybe that's all Glee was when Fox originally decided to go with it: A placeholder singing show until the "real" singing show came back in January. Of course now that Glee is actually successful the best Fox can do to capitalize on that popularity is release the first half of the season on DVD (plus 2 CDs of "music from the show").

GLEE is the one non-reality show that gets FOX any positive attention & ratings at all ( other than the ridiculously cartoonish 24 ) & they're going to suddenly bury it for the better part of five long months? It's absolutely ludicrous!

Best and Worst shows of fox within 7 years (main ones)

    by dr99

these are just the main best and worst within the past 7 from '03-'10
    (no order)
    Best:
    T:SCC (#1)
    24 (getting old now tho)
    Fringe
    Dollhouse
    Bones (varies on episode)
    Lie to me
Hell's Kitchen (funny, but overdone sometimes)
    Kitchen Nightmares (good too)
    Worst:
Glee (number one in the worst fox show hall of shame)
American Idol (when will this finally be done?)
So you think you can dance (sucks worse than Idol)
Human Target (seems too much like a 24 remake while it still airs)
