What would a next gen Back to the Future video game look like?

Published at:  Nov 23, 2009 5:10:19 AM CST

Ahoy, squirts! Quint here. You might call this a bit of non-news... and you might be right. But you'd be dead wrong if you don't think the below isn't worth posting.

What I've embedded is a mod which originated here and just like the unofficial Ghostbusters Mod that was linked and forwarded across the internet a few years ago I'd be willing to bet that this amazing piece of work kick-starts a real next-gen console Back to the Future game.

I mean, the concept is there, the possibilities are incredible and Christopher Lloyd would voice Doc Brown again for $50 and a box of Cheerios, I'm sure.

But whether this leads to anything or not, it's way too cool not to mention.

Imagine hitting 88 MPH and instead of just flashing to a different colored runway you flash to an open field and are barreling towards a herd of Triceratops? Or how about a dirt road of the '50s turning into the ground floor of an office building? How great would a sandbox world be with this level of detail and the ability to jump to alternate versions of areas. There could be a racing element, a GTA-like mission element and even an FPS element whenever the DeLorean breaks down. So much possibility. I'd love to see something come of this.

Thanks to @whatevermort on Twitter for bringing this to my attention.

The above is a mod, essentially fanmade. Just like the Ghostbusters thing that caught fire on the internet years back. Fan made. But with Ghostbusters that fan made mod ended up showing dollar signs to real deal video game makers and we got a pretty kick-ass Ghostbusters video game out of it. I'm hoping something similar happens with the above.

    by v'shael

so really, you'd be just looking at platform levels/warps, where depending on the era you're in, you're looking for different fuel for the car, and can do different things with it.

Ancient Past? Need thunderstorms, and you can fly the car into one.
20th century? Need gasoline, and you can't fly the car.
Future? You can collect any old crap for the flux capacitor, but you need bio-diesel or some such shit. And you can fly the car.

But just for the sake of argument, what would the player actually do? Speculate a bit so those VG boffins have a pitch by tomorrow. If Marty isn't shooting, what's happening? The time travel bit will work well Legacy Of Kain style, but McFly can't be killin'. Is it to be RPG-ish? Collecting clues and piecing together puzzles? I can see a Pip-Boy 3000-esque wrist thing with a Christopher Lloyd voice and I dunno if I like it... But I might.

They've had time travel/alternate worlds and often you'd do something in one world to affect another, e.g. destroy a sapling in the past so it's not a giant tree blocking your way in the future.

I think you could use that to make some really cool puzzles for a BTTF game.

Quint the GB game was mediocre

    by ominus

it was well-made,but as gameplay goes it got very boring, after the 100th ghostbusting.
now the use of time-traveling and how it affects the game world and game story of a game is a very cool idea.If you have played at least Day of the Tentacle and Ominusha 3,you know what i mean.
but i dont think that a BTTF game is a good idea.BTTF like GB are just ideas which do work in a film or a comic or a book, but they dont necessarily work on a game.i mean look at the video and tell me what are supposed to do the whole time in the game?: driving the delorean and just changing the scenery of the road? it looks a while, but after a while it will also going to get boring.
one last note: when you hear they are working on modern videogames of old classic movie franchises, then u can bet that they are thinking about making a new installment of the movie franchise, and they are just measuring the strength of the modern fanbase.if in the near future,u hear that they are indeed making a BTTF game, then it wont suprise me that we will here for the consideration of making a movie too.its business.

It could be like a platformer, where you have to do all sorts of running/jumping/stunts and retrieve items. I don't really see it as a game where you'd shoot anything. I could definitely see something like "Stuntman".

    by chakraborty

You can't make an action game out of a movie that was essentially a comedy-drama. Apart from the scene with the Libyans, the chase in Town square, and beating up Biff as he date rapes Marty's mother, there wasn't a whole lot of action in Back to the Future.

C'mon how can you find fault with a game where you spend 98% of the time dodging bees? But seriously, a BTTF game where the DeLorean handles as seen above would be the cat's P.J.s! Maybe the plot could tie in Doc Brown's time travel institute from the Universal Studios ride.

    by itrainmonkeys

anyone who is asking what the main character would do in a game like this must have no imagination at all.The game plot basically writes itself. Biff (or some relative) steals the delorean and goes around to different times stealing or messing things up.....then you have to go back to where he went (somehow you now have the delorean....or maybe a crappy, new one at first and have to get the better one) and fix time. You need to right the wrongs. Basically chasing Biff through different time periods. It writes itself.

itrainmonkeys - it does write itself

    by juntmonkey

Absolutely correct. It's a no-brainer. Set it in 1986, with the Biff idea you mentioned and/or Marty going to save Doc's family etc. The gameplay writes itself as well...scarce resources (plutonium), finding enough road to get up to 88 (a key part of some early missions)...eventual hover conversions and Mr. Fusion, HOVERBOARDS. The possibility of running into your other self if hardware will allow it. You're a huge moron if you think it should be "left alone" or that comedies can't be made into games. It would be a sequel, not trying to adapt the trilogy into game form. As for being "left alone", that honestly does not apply to video games. I mean Jesus Christ, they had Marlon Brando reprise the role of The Godfather 30 years later...the artistic potential to return to these worlds is astounding.

I like the idea of a next gen BTTF game...

    by darthvedder81

But it should be exploration/adventure based and not action/killing people based. Having Doc or Marty walking around beating people up would be stupid.

BTTF doesn't really work as a game

    by cinemanimetal

BTTF is my favorite movie and as much as I enjoy the idea of a game it doesn't really make much sense. I played the GTA mod that turns it into BTTF and that was quite cool and fun to me, but really I don't know how to make an actual story and levels out of something that doesn't involve any action! I mean the only way I can see it working is creating a new story with new characters, but then its not BTTF. If someone does figure out a good idea though I'm there!

these kind of movies can only work in videogames

    by ominus

    as adventure videogames.

we watch the BTTF movies more about their story, rather than their action, and since the adventure games are more about story and less about action, their genre is the perfect one for such movies.
you can just make a good new story with these familiar characters and use the concept of time-traveling,and ofc add a lot of humour.its like having a new sequel to the franchise, only that you interact with it,rather watching.
if only the adventure games genre wasnt dead...

RE: Thomas F. Wilson aka Biff Tannen

    by djb

No, I'm happy to report that Tom Wilson is NOT dead. He's quite active in fact, having been seen lately in projects such as USA's PSYCH and most recently in Soderbergh's THE INFORMANT!

Now make like a tree and get outta here.

    ....butt-head.

I could see BTTF working as a sandbox game..

    by the_crimson_king

with time travel, that would be cool, only problem is what would the crux of the gameplay and story be? you couldn't have Marty running around shooting people, but I suppose it could work as a exploration/adventure game

    No action?

    by juntmonkey

No action in the BTTF universe? Driving galore. Driving to escape, driving to chase, driving to make it up to 88mph in time, driving to hit a certain point while you are going 88mph. Getting out of the car, running to find plutonium/garbage/fuel quickly so that you can travel through time. Skateboard chases. HOVERBOARD chases. The occasional fist fight. Horses. Trains. Puzzle solving how to get the car up to 88 when it won't start. Exploring Hill Valley in all these different time periods. Sneaking around to avoid your other self. It's not that hard.

    the plot

    by redkamel

on-the-fly alternate timelines in the game would be impossible. It would have to be like Uncharted 2...a movie where you get to play the lead, but everything is essentially scripted and linear. And it would to be all puzzle/running/driving/stealth/getting Biff to drive into a manure truck based, since there was a lot of that in BTTF. As long as its better that than POS Ghostbuster game. God what a dissapointment that was.

    Linear vs. Sandbox

    by juntmonkey

Completely disagree that it should be like Uncharted. Isn't that how Ghostbusters is, which you don't like? I always thought Ghostbusters should have been sandbox around NYC, with the occasional journey to someplace different ala The Real Ghostbusters. Not sure why you think alternate timelines would be impossible...Ocarina of Time used the same concept, Link to the Past before that.

    Furthermore...

    by juntmonkey

If for some ridiculous reason you can't do (almost) immediate switching between timelines, then just forget it and wait until you can. It would be awful to have the time travel sequences be non-interactive cut-scenes and/or have you funneled into one very rigid place and time to travel. Half the point is to be able to mess around and travel and explore at will.
