What would a next gen Back to the Future video game look like?
Ahoy, squirts! Quint here. You might call this a bit of non-news... and you might be right. But you'd be dead wrong if you don't think the below isn't worth posting.
What I've embedded is a mod which originated here and just like the unofficial Ghostbusters Mod that was linked and forwarded across the internet a few years ago I'd be willing to bet that this amazing piece of work kick-starts a real next-gen console Back to the Future game.
I mean, the concept is there, the possibilities are incredible and Christopher Lloyd would voice Doc Brown again for $50 and a box of Cheerios, I'm sure.
But whether this leads to anything or not, it's way too cool not to mention.
Imagine hitting 88 MPH and instead of just flashing to a different colored runway you flash to an open field and are barreling towards a herd of Triceratops? Or how about a dirt road of the '50s turning into the ground floor of an office building? How great would a sandbox world be with this level of detail and the ability to jump to alternate versions of areas. There could be a racing element, a GTA-like mission element and even an FPS element whenever the DeLorean breaks down. So much possibility. I'd love to see something come of this.
Thanks to @whatevermort on Twitter for bringing this to my attention.

Marty Mcfly with a pulse rifle.
-
Hell yeah, that looks AWESOME
-
It would be so sweet to see something like this. & dare I say: first!
-
And the letter W.
Also, first. -
beat again
-
What's with the big-ass gun?
-
That looked alright... But when did Marty ever pick up any sort of gun? Unless you play as a Lybian who steals the DeLorean... But that would be balls.
-
where you were SUPPOSED to fuck your mother.
That country is fucked up. -
The above is a mod, essentially fanmade. Just like the Ghostbusters thing that caught fire on the internet years back. Fan made. But with Ghostbusters that fan made mod ended up showing dollar signs to real deal video game makers and we got a pretty kick-ass Ghostbusters video game out of it. I'm hoping something similar happens with the above.
-
so really, you'd be just looking at platform levels/warps, where depending on the era you're in, you're looking for different fuel for the car, and can do different things with it.
Ancient Past? Need thunderstorms, and you can fly the car into one.
20th century? Need gasoline, and you can't fly the car.
Future? You can collect any old crap for the flux capacitor, but you need bio-diesel or some such shit. And you can fly the car. -
For racing and sandbox type games. The old GTA have a couple of those already. So, in a nutshell, old non-news, the usual crap AICN posts to keep up with the fact they DONT have scoops anymore.
-
Can you post the Jimmy Cameron Avatar clip that was on 60 minutes last night???
-
But just for the sake of argument, what would the player actually do? Speculate a bit so those VG boffins have a pitch by tomorrow. If Marty isn't shooting, what's happening? The time travel bit will work well Legacy Of Kain style, but McFly can't be killin'. Is it to be RPG-ish? Collecting clues and piecing together puzzles? I can see a Pip-Boy 3000-esque wrist thing with a Christopher Lloyd voice and I dunno if I like it... But I might.

This would be the greatest game for me.
by nomoredirtyjokespleaseweareyanks
Forget Star Wars or Indy, this ones my favorite. Some of the greatest lines are in those films, especially part 3.

I still play the BTTF 2 on Commodore 64
by nomoredirtyjokespleaseweareyanks
it furkin rules.
-
They've had time travel/alternate worlds and often you'd do something in one world to affect another, e.g. destroy a sapling in the past so it's not a giant tree blocking your way in the future.
I think you could use that to make some really cool puzzles for a BTTF game. -
Marty now in a "Doc" type role. How awesome would that be?

Have crashed my Firefox repeatedly as well as covering the articles of the day in an advertisement that CAN NOT BE CLOSED without lagging everything the fuck up. GET FUCKING RID OF THEM.
-
Mighty strong words runt, are you man enough to back 'em up with more than just a pie plate?
-
You don't even have to add Ad-Blocker or No Script. Just get a proper hosts file, and problem solved.
-
That's how it would work, those fucking Lego games... Make Lego Back to the Future, and that's it...
A computer can't actually calculate how your actions in the past would change the future, so a honest BTTF game is far from here... -
...where Marty plans to date rape his mother so that his father can rescue her, only to be interrupted by Biff who tries to date rape his mother instead? Because you can't have a game set in the fifties without date rape.
-
it was well-made,but as gameplay goes it got very boring, after the 100th ghostbusting.
now the use of time-traveling and how it affects the game world and game story of a game is a very cool idea.If you have played at least Day of the Tentacle and Ominusha 3,you know what i mean.
but i dont think that a BTTF game is a good idea.BTTF like GB are just ideas which do work in a film or a comic or a book, but they dont necessarily work on a game.i mean look at the video and tell me what are supposed to do the whole time in the game?: driving the delorean and just changing the scenery of the road? it looks a while, but after a while it will also going to get boring.
one last note: when you hear they are working on modern videogames of old classic movie franchises, then u can bet that they are thinking about making a new installment of the movie franchise, and they are just measuring the strength of the modern fanbase.if in the near future,u hear that they are indeed making a BTTF game, then it wont suprise me that we will here for the consideration of making a movie too.its business. -

It could be like a platformer, where you have to do all sorts of running/jumping/stunts and retrieve items. I don't really see it as a game where you'd shoot anything. I could definitely see something like "Stuntman".
-
You can't make an action game out of a movie that was essentially a comedy-drama. Apart from the scene with the Libyans, the chase in Town square, and beating up Biff as he date rapes Marty's mother, there wasn't a whole lot of action in Back to the Future.
-
There's great attention to detail in that. Looks really sharp.

THAT IS AWESOME
BTTF game must be made. -
I'd buy it! Wonder what the storyline would be considering that the DeLorean was destroyed at the end of the third movie?
-
I would seriously love a game based on BTF, the possibilities are endless.
Ghostbusters game was surprisingly good. -
and I bet it is...
-
ghostbusters, back to the future, alien, terminator, predator, die hard, star trek, star wars, blade runner, conan... just let it die already. quit trying to recreate how fun 1985 and 7th grade were and move on for fuck's sake.
-
That is all.
-
I find it funny you want to let star wars die yet you call yourself "sith-rising"? kettle meet pot!
-
C'mon how can you find fault with a game where you spend 98% of the time dodging bees? But seriously, a BTTF game where the DeLorean handles as seen above would be the cat's P.J.s! Maybe the plot could tie in Doc Brown's time travel institute from the Universal Studios ride.
-
anyone who is asking what the main character would do in a game like this must have no imagination at all.The game plot basically writes itself. Biff (or some relative) steals the delorean and goes around to different times stealing or messing things up.....then you have to go back to where he went (somehow you now have the delorean....or maybe a crappy, new one at first and have to get the better one) and fix time. You need to right the wrongs. Basically chasing Biff through different time periods. It writes itself.
-
This is just a patch for the pc version of CRYSIS, which you can download and play right now if you have the crysis video game, But yes i agree this possibilities of this turning into a game are endless, just like ghostbusters a straight up sequel or what ever. the crysis boys have done a great job with this, and their game engine is top notch.

when does the zac effron bttf talks begin?

AND THEY DESERVE AGGRESSIVE RESISTANCE
-
My work computer can't handle this shit. It breaks the webpage and i spend ages refreshing the page.Who were the ad wizards who came up with this one?
-
Damnit man you said what I wanted to say... but then I also wanted to add that for the role of Jennifer: Dakota Fanning. Man that chick is in everything. Oh and that mod was kinda lame. I mean the car looked cool, but I thought it was something like the ghostbusters mod. Bleh.
-
You just posted a link to the official Crysis modding portal, where modders can post their work. It even tells you the author's name there, some guy called Tirido, not the Crytek developers. It even links to his blog. Do you even know what a mod is?
-
I'd pay to see that.
-
...what bugs do you mean? I finished the game overnight, and didn't run into a single glitch. Loved it...not the most difficult game, but I loved the feel of 'playing' a GB sequel.
-
I'm all for letting star wars die. you think i watch cartoons and play videogames? I'm a grown fucking man you douch
-
Seriously, great stuff. I really appreciated the part where the driver ejects and watches the flame trails over the ramp. Way cool.
-
Your a "grown man" who dosn't watch cartoons or playvideo games, yet you still visit this site and leave comments? Shouldn't you be off reading the Wallstreet Journal or updating your portfolio like other grown ups? you are just a confussed fucking man if you ask me! By the way, I've heard of a douche and a douche bag but I am unfamiliar with the term "douch". Is that some kind of grown up slang?
-
...a grown man who DOESN'T watch cartoons or play video games?!? Sounds more like a little boy who is trying WAY too hard to 'sound' like a grown up. I'm married w/ kids and a real job, but if someone tried to take away my 'toons and vids, I'd climb the first clock tower I saw and start picking off pedestrians!
-
and start picking off pedestrians. Well that sounds like a great concept for the Back to the future game. Count me in!
-
cartoons and videogames are another. if you need to shave every morning, you're probably too old.
-
I've been "confused" before, but never "confussed" you douchEbag
-
you certainly are confused old man.
-
Shia LeBeouf as Marty's son. $50 says they've probably genuinely already thought of that.
-
they'd have to account for the fact that world is fucking nothing like what it looked like in BTTF 2. WHERE ARE OUR FLYING CARS?
-
YOU LIIIIIEEEEEEEEEEEDDDDD!!!!
-
whiny little drips like you make my day a little sadder. if you don't like the site, FUCK OFF.staying on a site you supposedly hate, and whining about it is the definition of pathetic.
-
It's all in where in time they send you, really. Imagine if the protagonist worked with Doc Brown and Marty to stop a rogue time traveler from changing history, and you ended up in the jurassic era, or thrown into the revolutionary war, etc, etc. All places where the residents would (or could) view you as a hostile and you'd have to fight. It CAN be done.
-
the Doctor,rather than Marty.
-
again i suggest for the gamers to play the all time classic adventure game day of the tentacle.you could play 3 different characters in 3 different time periods (past, present, future) all at the same time.and all these in a fucking dos game,15 years before technological behemoths like Crysis.imagination above technology.
-
Is the one I have on gamecube. Well it's not the entire game, but BACK TO THE FUTURE THE RIDE on some UNIVERSAL STUDIOS VIDEOGAME we have on gamecube. Haven't played it in ages. I kinda wanna play it right now on our wii, but you need a gcn controller and our gamecube is in storage and I'm too lazy to go through all that.
-
"$50 and a box of cheerios?" I just saw (on the Up bluray I think) that he's gonna be in the SANTA BUDDIES movie with those 4 dogs that are the children of Air Bud. Aint nothing wrong with doing a direct to video movie with four talking dogs that save Christmas. And I wonder what kind of swag comes with it, I got a B-Dawg stuffed toy with one video, a cosmonaut dog with space buddies. I think there was another video with a toy dog coming free too. Anyway CHRISTOPHER LLOYD FTW!!!!!!!

is one of the few games I actually remember playing on 8 bit Nintendo. I think you had to collect clocks or something.
-
That was a way wicked bit 'o video. I'll have to download Crysis now and see if I can get the mod to work with it.
-
"...hey man...I don't wanna mess with no Reefer Addicts!"
-
they would need to address the lack of good action in between time jumps.
-
Seriously! Quit whining to us about your own ineptitude!
-
Looks very cool! The possiblities ARE endless with a good story. Get the cast together now and make this happen! Now gimme a PepsiFree!
-
GIVE ME THAT NOW! I DEMAND SATISFACTION!!!
-
I would love for it to be one of the Lego games. I think it would be fantastic.

...they'll just wait until 2015 then remake the original with Marty time travlling back thirty years to...1985!Fuuuuuuuuuuck, I'm old...

HOLY SHIT AMAZING!!!! If they make it they should higher the guy that made this mod! They could easily get them all to come back and reprise their voices. Ghostbusters was a great game.. now to complete my reliving of childhood PLEASE PLEASE MAKE THIS GAME!!
-
good one
-
Absolutely correct. It's a no-brainer. Set it in 1986, with the Biff idea you mentioned and/or Marty going to save Doc's family etc. The gameplay writes itself as well...scarce resources (plutonium), finding enough road to get up to 88 (a key part of some early missions)...eventual hover conversions and Mr. Fusion, HOVERBOARDS. The possibility of running into your other self if hardware will allow it. You're a huge moron if you think it should be "left alone" or that comedies can't be made into games. It would be a sequel, not trying to adapt the trilogy into game form. As for being "left alone", that honestly does not apply to video games. I mean Jesus Christ, they had Marlon Brando reprise the role of The Godfather 30 years later...the artistic potential to return to these worlds is astounding.
-
http://tinyurl.com/y8c8j39
-
good game though.
-
But it should be exploration/adventure based and not action/killing people based. Having Doc or Marty walking around beating people up would be stupid.
-
in my first post.it directs to a review of that nintendo videogame,by the Angry video game Nerd.that games looks terrible.
-
havent seen him since those movies.did he die?
-
BTTF is my favorite movie and as much as I enjoy the idea of a game it doesn't really make much sense. I played the GTA mod that turns it into BTTF and that was quite cool and fun to me, but really I don't know how to make an actual story and levels out of something that doesn't involve any action! I mean the only way I can see it working is creating a new story with new characters, but then its not BTTF. If someone does figure out a good idea though I'm there!
-
as adventure videogames.
we watch the BTTF movies more about their story, rather than their action, and since the adventure games are more about story and less about action, their genre is the perfect one for such movies.
you can just make a good new story with these familiar characters and use the concept of time-traveling,and ofc add a lot of humour.its like having a new sequel to the franchise, only that you interact with it,rather watching.
if only the adventure games genre wasnt dead... -
No, I'm happy to report that Tom Wilson is NOT dead. He's quite active in fact, having been seen lately in projects such as USA's PSYCH and most recently in Soderbergh's THE INFORMANT!
Now make like a tree and get outta here.
....butt-head.

I've been informed the Link doesn't work.
Just Google
"Thomas F. Wilson- Stop asking the Question"
It's hilarious. -
with time travel, that would be cool, only problem is what would the crux of the gameplay and story be? you couldn't have Marty running around shooting people, but I suppose it could work as a exploration/adventure game
-
No action in the BTTF universe? Driving galore. Driving to escape, driving to chase, driving to make it up to 88mph in time, driving to hit a certain point while you are going 88mph. Getting out of the car, running to find plutonium/garbage/fuel quickly so that you can travel through time. Skateboard chases. HOVERBOARD chases. The occasional fist fight. Horses. Trains. Puzzle solving how to get the car up to 88 when it won't start. Exploring Hill Valley in all these different time periods. Sneaking around to avoid your other self. It's not that hard.
-
I love people that register for the TB's, read the posts, and then say that "AICN HAZ BEEN IN THE TANK 4 YRZ U SUCK HARRY OMG LOL!" If you don't like the site, stop coming here, you moron.

A next gen "Aliens" game.
-
on-the-fly alternate timelines in the game would be impossible. It would have to be like Uncharted 2...a movie where you get to play the lead, but everything is essentially scripted and linear. And it would to be all puzzle/running/driving/stealth/getting Biff to drive into a manure truck based, since there was a lot of that in BTTF. As long as its better that than POS Ghostbuster game. God what a dissapointment that was.
-
Nice!
-
Completely disagree that it should be like Uncharted. Isn't that how Ghostbusters is, which you don't like? I always thought Ghostbusters should have been sandbox around NYC, with the occasional journey to someplace different ala The Real Ghostbusters. Not sure why you think alternate timelines would be impossible...Ocarina of Time used the same concept, Link to the Past before that.
-
If for some ridiculous reason you can't do (almost) immediate switching between timelines, then just forget it and wait until you can. It would be awful to have the time travel sequences be non-interactive cut-scenes and/or have you funneled into one very rigid place and time to travel. Half the point is to be able to mess around and travel and explore at will.
-
Sweet. A double CD rerelease! Justice is finally done.
-
Yes, that game did suck. Almost as bad as the Atari 2600 E.T. game where you had to collect Reeses pieces and I think pieces of heart.
-
A next gen Aliens game with characters voiced by Sigourney Weaver, Lance Henriksen, Bill Paxton, and Michael Biehn....that would be awesome.
-
almost destroyed my desire to play video games entire.
I am glad that they buried those unsold copies in the desert. -
looks good.
-
In a vehicles pack for WipeOut and I'll be satisfied. Although the "running into doppelgangers" bit could be interesting in a game. Like having to go back and sabotage an objective you completed earlier in the game without harming your past self.
-
The character is holding a gun. Not a chance. No more guns in anything mainstream! THEY IZ BADZ!
