Anton Sirius' pre-coverage of the Toronto Film Festival continues with: THE CAVALCADE OF STARS!!!
Hey folks, Harry here with another pre-report from Anton Sirius, our resident chronicler of the Toronto Groove. He's been supplying himself with a wide assortment of various recording devices from toilet paper to chicken feathers to holo-reactualizers. So stay tuned for more from Mr Sirius...
Greetings, starkinder! The shape of this year's party
scene at Toronto is starting to become clear- a lot of
old friends, and some people I'd like very much to
become new friends, no matter how many martinis I have
to pour down their throats. Here's who's here:
The A-List: The Bruce is sweeping into town, as is Le
Denzel, Susan (sans Tim), Big Kev (that's Spacey, not
Smith- he's been here for weeks, making a nuisance of
himself), Danny D, both Fiennes, the (don't say it,
don't say it) 'irrepressible' Robin Williams (damn, I
couldn't do it), Ethan (sans Uma), Liv, Nick, Sean,
Sigourney (I called her Siggy once- she's got a great
death stare!), Ed Harris, Joan Allen, Jeff Bridges,
Bill Pullman (how'd people with last names get on this
list?), and that loose cannon Holly Hunter. She
better keep that Nair to herself.
The Undercard: Character actor jackpot! Now THESE
people know how to party- Stephen Rea, Ned Beatty,
Maury Chaykin, Mary-Louise Parker, Campbell Scott,
Albert Finney, Miranda Richardson, David Paymer, Frank
Whaley, Sir Derek, Tim Roth, Forest Whitaker, Bob
Hoskins, Ray Liotta, Will Hurt, Mary McDonnell, Chris
Cooper, Andre Braugher...
The Band: Musical accompanyment won't be provided by
these folk. They're ACTORS now- Jewel, Raekwon and
Power from Wu-Tang, Harry Connick Jr., and Kris
Kristofferson. Elton might sing somewhere, though,
and the Barenaked Ladies are here too.
Who Will Be The Belle of the Ball? (Vegas odds):
Sarah Polley 1-1 (Canada's Sweetheart AND here with
her directorial debut!)
Natasha Lyonne 3-1 (The new Queen of Indie had two
films showing)
Molly Parker 4-1 (also a Canuck, also with a couple of
films)
Chloe Sevigny 10-1 (another double dipper)(HARRY NOTE: I soooo love Chloe!)
Pascale Bussieres 40-1 (she's everywhere this year
with THREE films, and she's Canadian- well, Quebecois-
too! You probably know her best as Camille in When
Night Is Falling, or from Twilight of the Ice Nymphs.)
Other Young Scamps: Saffron Burrows, Skeet Ulrich,
Gretchen Mol, Taye Diggs, Anna Paquin, Tobey Maguire,
Kathleen Robertson, Penelope Cruz, Giovanni Ribisi and
Rachel Weisz.
TV People: Jason Alexander, Brooke Shields, Jason
Priestly, David Schwimmer. How'd they make the cut?
The Directors: Norman Jewison, Michael Apted, Gregg
Araki, Giuseppe Tornatore, Harmony Korine, Wes Craven,
Wayne Wang, Alan Rudolph, Ang Lee, Lasse Hallstrom,
Paul Schrader, Jim Jarmusch, Steven Soderbergh, Errol
Morris, Mike Figgis, Agnieszka Holland, Lawrence
Kasdan.
George's Friends: Natalie Portman and Terence Stamp
are both here. Wonder if I can get 'em to recreate a
scene from TPM? (I was going to do this with Bruce
and Toni Collette, but it would have been really
boring- just the two of them sitting there. Besides
which, Toni ain't here.)
Living Legends: Catherine Deneuve is here. I remember
the first time I met her and her sister, in Nice in
'62. Of course, neither of us have aged a day. And
the whole festival is still in 'hold' mode, hoping
Hayao Miyazaki can make it. They've held off MH until
the very last day of the fest, just in case.
Is this list complete? Goddess no. But I imagine one
or two of these people will ramble drunkenly into my
data recorder, so if you've got any questions you'd
like to ask any of 'em, as always, send 'em on to
robbie_dogstar@yahoo.com

Note to Anton: as a courtesy to all the Canucks who come to this site, make sure they taste a piece of home. Make sure to incessantly use the words "Canadian," "Canada's own," or "The pride of-fill-in-the-blank-rathole-town-no one-cares-about" when mentioning all the Canadian celebrities on hand. This advice also goes to anyone who covers the Canadian entertainment scene: you see, we Canadians have a real inferiority complex when it comes to the United States: we have to feel that we can do all the things you can do; so what if we have to steal some of our celebrities from Beirut, Egypt, or wherever. If they lived in Canada for more than 20 minutes, they're ours! Please don't forget this; it makes those unbearably long 11 months of winter go by so much faster. Note: this advice also applies to Canadian atheletes who excel in sports like baseball, basketball, and football (real football, not the CFL).

You know, the director. What's up with Brooke Shields too? Are they making, "Suddenly Susan-The Movie"? Damn!
-
First of all the CFL is Way more exciting than the NFL. Trust me,before you laugh at that notion watch the CFL, much more offense, more exciting than that snoozfest you call the NFL. And why the hell do people think canada is a frozen wasteland geeze. It's been very hot here this year, no snow , thank you for your time.

Wow Anton, you're missing out just covering the Main Festival. I was at the sneak preview of "Scalpers" last night at Planet Indie and it brought the house down. It made me laugh, it made me cry, and it made me wonder why such a great Canadian film didn't get into the bigger festival. "Scalpers" is an ensemble piece, similar to Pulp Fiction, in that it has many main characters who are all interesting in their own right. "Vinnie" and "Gino" are hilarious, "Lou and Sammy" have a a beautiful friendship, and "Joey" and his grandfather have an emotional bond rivalling the best in cinema. Only downside with this one, if this even counts, is that they're are no known stars....but they will be soon. Check this film out! It's got two more screenings. 9:30, Friday, Sept.10 at the Grande Theatre and 1 pm Wednesday, Sept. 15 at the Bloor Cinema.

Hey everyone. I too was at the "Scalpers" sneak preview last night and it is all Alyn says it is and more. I found it to be like a Goodfellas, in that it's main character is raised as a hustler by his shady grandpa and ends up plying his trade in the violent, dirty world of ticket scalping. It doesn't have a distributor yet, but I have a feeling it's going to be one of the big pick-ups of the festival. Get your tickets to this film now! or else you might have to buy them from a scalper!

I just wanted to add to what Powerslave and Gilmour (those names!) had to say and this is directed right to any Americans who are reading this before any of you start shooting your mouth off (not literally of course).
1) The CFL is better because it has a longer history, less downs, a longer field and (dare I say it) bigger balls. It all makes for a quicker and closer game. Who the hell wants to watch anymore of those SuperBowl blow-outs? Tailgate this!
2) Yes my dear American friends we have been playing one your fave games longer than you, deal with it. So that makes hockey, basketball and football. Sorry. You guys still have base-"yawn"-ball.
3) Oh yeah, something unrelated, please keep your Wal-marts, Hooters (just the restaurant) and Sunny Delight south of the 49th parallel. Oh yeah... NOW!
I feel better.
By the way Anton, I still have to disagree, Araki's "Splendor" was a lame duck. "It's my homage to the screwball comedy", great Greggers, what's next? Your homage to the great T&A comedies of the 1980's? Hardly wait... -
Though I didn't have tickets to tonights premiere, I do have them for all the 6:30pm gala series. I'm extremely excited to see some of the films that set to be shown. I am hoping to get seats for the Dogma showing and the Barenaked in America as well a certain animated film next Saturday. ;) I'm pretty easy to spot cause I usually carry my purple knapsack with if you want come over and say hi :)
