Considering that the Millennium started in 2001 (not 2000, like many people assume), wouldn't 2011 be the start of the next decade? After all, we start with the year 1, not 0.

Math does not exist in this dojo.

    by kai_mah'gra

Herc, I realize that math is a bit of a problem for you, but the last time I checked, a decade had 10 years and not 9 years. Consequently the first decade of the 21st Century ends on December 31st 2010, and not 2009. Unless, of course, you happpen to be one of those douches who thinks that the last Millennium ended in 1999 (and that includes "Party-like-its-1999" Prince) and, you know, can't .........count.

Hint: You don't start at year "0" you start at year "1". Use those projections at the end of your hands to count on from there.

    ......if you can.

One of the things I loved about my visit to Japan in 2000 were the clocks they had counting down to the new millennium in '01. Some people do know how to read a calendar. I wish we did.

You mean the link and comments refering to the astronomical calendar that wouldn't actually apply to normal people who use the gregorian calendar?
In that case, then a century would end in the 99 year, which it doesn't it ends in the 00 year.
However, I actually correct myself in my original post in that thread. Since a decade can be applied to any 10 year period (say 1975-1985), it's perfectly acceptable to decide to use it to refer to an 0-9 date range. Unless of course, you're saying that it's the end of the 201st decade, at which point you're specifically referring to the standard calendar and it would end after 2010... but who the heck does that.

    Jim

    by joed

Jim spent years mocking Dunder Mifflin management (in the form of Michael).

It's interesting to see the shoe on the other foot, trying to be everyone's boss after being their friend and coworker. I couldn't deal with a couple more years of awkward, funny Jim. His character needed to go somewhere. Same with Pam. Her character is noticeably louder and more confident in the last couple of seasons, now that Roy is totally out of the picture. I like what they've done 90% of the time. I don't like how cartoony things have gotten around the office. The gang is always running around engaging in some form of hijinks or another. Last week's episode struck a great balance between the wackiness and the more somber tone of earlier seasons. There was the renewed threat of the branch closing (in the form of company wide bankruptcy), as Michael tries to keep everyone distracted. I thought it was great. Tube City had me laughing for a couple of days.

The OFFICE & How I Met Your Mother

    by idrinkyourmilkshake

Are the 2 best comedies (on regular tv) right now. But, In my opinion -BOTH shows have had AWFUL current seasons. The Office used to be flatout wackier. If you're a fan, what happened to Dwight? He used to be the funnies character..then they brought Andy-and he was hilarious..but lately...there just terrible.Michael is still the saving grace, but Jim was much better was a prankster/slacker..now the show has gone in a bizarre sentimental slant.I dunno, lasty season was still fine-but the new one...sucks.And How I met your mother-same shit more-or-less(but not as bad as the office.)If you wacth it, they made Barney into a wuss. This season was a nosedive!

Decade is any 10 year interval

    by jeffv

I firmly accept that the current millennium started in 2001, but "decade" just means "any ten year period". So, when someone refers to the '90s as a decade, there's nothing wrong with that. In fact, it's so common to refer to '90s, '80s, etc. as a decade, that referring to the '00s as a decade is fine, too. It's a bit of a stretch, but, from there, if it's common to refer to '80s, '90s and '00s as a decade, then the first such decade to *end* since 2001 would be 2000-2009. I can nitpick with the best of them, but if you want to nitpick, I suggest nitpicking that a decade starts/ends on any fixed interval, not that it ends on a 9 rather than a 0.

The funniest show on television right now...

    by wolfboy

is It's Always Sunny in Philidelphia... I've thoroughly enjoyed this season and lately I find it's delivered on a much more consistent Basis than the Office and 30 Rock...

The Office has been mediocre this season but is getting better. I really like the new subplot of the Branch once again being in danger. But they need to stick with it unlike the Michael dating pam's mom subplot which could of been really funny but got thrown away like to many other promising Plotlines on the office as of late.
I suspect Jim wont be co-manager by the end of the season...

    This Decade Bullshit

    by symposium

has to stop! Why are people finding it had to grasp that a decade ends with a 9? and don't start with this "well a decade is just any 10 year period" crap either. We already group the 10 years together based on the 3rd digit. Here we go... 20's 30's 40's 50's 60's 70's 80's 90's. Not one of those decades from the 20th century ended with anything other than a fucking 9!!! the 1970's did not end with 1980 so why in the name of fuckery should this decade end with 2010? anybody who says it does is a cunt.

Community was clearly the best, non stop jokes as well as a heart to the episode Parks would have been second best, it's funny how that show is always more enjoyable when they drop the city planning plotlines and move the episodes out of the park building, and they gave andy the b plot which is always a great choise as he's clearly the funniest cast memberOffice and 30 rock kinda tied for worst of the night, office was just akward with Micheal not shuting up and Jim as the boss is the worst decision the show has made ever, I used to love jim cause he was the everyman, now he's kinda douche, 30 rock was also an akward episode, besides some tracy morgan one liners and Dr spaceman appearance i didn't really laugh that much.I'm really digging this line up, i hope NBC sticks with it, although i get the feeling that in one of their dick moves they arte going to pull one of the shows and place it on another night that sinks in the ratings (Community is the one i fear they will pull and stick on mondays or something and replace it with some other crappy show that just brings thursdays down)Let's keep this must see TV lineup for a few years NBC

Parks & Rec won the night for me.

Community felt a little lackluster to me tonight. I'm not sure of the reason but it might have been Joe McHale hardly having any interaction with his, er, regular community. Wasn't bad though. Loved the American Tale shout-out & the desk dragging brought back memories of elementry school when that used to happen to me all the time. Plus *another* Chevy pratfall.

But Parks & Recs, man were hitting it out of the park all night thanks to Poehler and Offerman. My fav lines:

"Oh yeah, I forget that because your so pretty you're not used to rejection."

"Guys love it when you can show them you better at something that they love."

"Keeping you eyes open is always a good rule around guns."

"Someone shot me in the HEAD!!!" "Bullabullabulla?"

"Maybe Ron shot himself in the back of his head." "No, Ron loves the back of his head. He wouldn’t do that."

And I'm completely going to use the “My bra startled me!” excuse. Bitches be crazy. Poehler's
monolouge here reminded me how I felt reading Massa’s New Moon review & the talkback that follows.

That said, I got the biggest laugh of the night from The Office. When Pam tells Micheal not to twirl and it goes into his talking head - "I'm not going to twirl. First of all, it's not a twirl, it's a spin.....I might do the spin." - had FOR YOUR CONSIDERATION written all over it for Steve Carell. It was done with amazing delivery.

  • It would have been interesting if when Micheal called in Oscar, Oscar told them his solution, they love it and in later episodes Micheal is given the credit from all the execs for "solving" the money issues. It could lead to some funny situations over micheal taking credit for Oscer's ideas, perhaps even having micheal feel bad about it and deciding to make it up to him by promoting oscar to co manager and demoting jim back to salesalso with andy trying to get oscar to stand up and tell his mind, it seemd like the show was building towards Oscar getting over his fears and giving his 2 cents to the companyperhaps a future episode will deal with this because it seems like thats the direction they are going with.also all the green week stuff was lame, the only show it didn't feel forced in was community, it was showhorned into the office pretty badly and that kenneth b plot on 30 rock was so painful to watch (the joke about the green peacock in the corner clearly shows the cast hated being forced to incorporate "green week into their show). Not sure what Parks did for green week, as the episode was about hunting

    Boss Jim

    by throwmetheidol

The problem for me with boss Jim is after slacking and pranking for years he comes off as a douche to crack down on other people's misbehavior.
I understand what they were thinking though, that Jim needs some kind of character development or advancement. They should have sent him to business school instead, maybe.

    People complaining about character development

    by captainaxis

Really pisses me off. I think what The Office is doing with Jim is brilliant, and very true to life. Of course he was a slacker/prankster when he had no real responsibilities, but he's changed now that he's been promoted, married, expecting a child, and owns a home. It would be more irritating if he remained the same immature smartass with all of that on his plate. He has to take his job seriously, especially in the current economic climate, and they've been slowly building this direction for his character since the second or third season. I always thought the writers were foreshadowing that Jim will eventually turn into Michael, so to speak. I hope and expect that the other Office denizens will give him shit for being such a hypocrite and we'll see him deal with it. We've already seen hints of it and I wonder if Jim will keep "evolving" into more of a douchebag, to the point that it creates conflict with Pam at work.

It blows my mind that anybody would complain about the character work on The Office. It's transcended the sitcom genre and actually makes you care about the characters, rather than going for cheap sight gags or wink-wink nudge-nudge moments like 30 Rock and Community. Some of the situations on The Office can get pretty silly, but the characters still remain grounded in reality.

Loved Amy, Ron and everybody hunting and Ron getting shot in the back of the head. I also liked April and Andy together back in the office.

    Leslie Knope is NOT

the female version of Micheal Scott. Although they are both oblivious to their own stupidity - Knope will know when she is being making fun of. Micheal has no grasp of sarcasm.

    Jim on the office

It would be good if someone called him on it though- "You used to slack off here all the time!" and see what he says...

You are so right..it is character development...but I have a theory that people tend to watch these shows and look at the cahracters as real..or as friends..and they hate friends either changing in personality or improving in situation cuz it makes them uncomfortable where they are in life...the Off ice is brilliant because they deal with all of that in a generally realistic way..as realistic as you can for a tv comedy.(P&R & 30Rock are fantasies) even in the most outlandish office its still rooted in reality and real human behaviour. Jim is who hee needs to be as is Pam. Dwight, can be absurd cuz he doesn't need the job in a real financial sense he'll be fine..and it all goes from there. Micheal unfortunately that job is his identity and will always be the tragic figure. Man I need another beer.
