PUSHING DAISIES Veteran Scott Nimerfro To Pen New CW Pilot For Warren Ellis’ GLOBAL FREQUENCY!!

I am – Hercules!!
IN FOCUS MAGAZINE: Leaving aside for the moment “Wonder Woman” and “Batman” and “X-Men,” is there a comic-book franchise you’d be especially keen to bring to screen?
JOSS WHEDON: The only time I ever read a comic and said, “Jesus, that should be on the screen,” I found out that somebody else was already developing it, and it was “Global Frequency.” It should be a TV show. I adore it.
“Pushing Daisies” writer-producer Scott Nimerfro has been hired to script a new CW pilot for Warren Ellis’ fucking brilliant funnybook series “Global Frequency,”
according to a tweet out of Production Weekly.
For those who put little faith in Twitter news, the tweet was retweeted by Ellis himself.
The graphic novel is a kind of sci-fi “24," dealing with an elite and illegal network of 1,001 intelligence operatives charged with quashing dire and fast-emerging crises as they arrive all over the planet.
If Nimerfro’s script gets before cameras, it will be the second stab at a “Global Frequency” pilot. CW predecessor The WB shot one in 2004 starring lanky Michelle Forbes (Ensign Ro on “Star Trek: The Next Generation” and Admiral Whatsherface on “Battlestar Galactica”) as Frequency mastermind Miranda Zero. That version was to be overseen by screenwriter John Rogers (“American Outlaws,” “The Core”), who has since gone on to TNT’s “Leverage.” Its writing staff was expected to include both Ellis and “Tick” creator Ben Edlund (“Firefly,” “Angel,” “Supernatural”).
That version did not go forward.

I will definitely give it a shot.
-
I LOVED the pilot for Global Frequency that the WB did. I thought they completely nailed the comic book adaptation. Awesome comic! Hopefully this adaptation will be as good or better than the last! Very COOL NEWS!
-
Only the first volume was excellent, the rest was good to fair.
-
This doesn't fit the CW's branding at all.
-
From what I remember Global Frequency was a tight book and having Ben Edlund involved is a good thing. He wrote some of Supernatural's best episodes.
-
Misread that Edlund was going to be on the staff of the first pilot.
-
This could change the course of CW's network!
-
Y The Last Man, Transmetropolitan and Preacher, all on cable of course.
Apart from Lost and some of the comedies the writing and characters on network tv are for the most part very poor (FlashForward and V being recent additional examples). I feel that this would be another added to that pile -
There was nothing really WOW about it. Not really psyched to see a second attempt, but will watch it with interest. It might be riding high on Fringe's coat-tails, since it's definitely comic-booky (as opposed to Sci Fi) because the science is utter bullshit.
-
Is Michelle Fores too old?
-
Michelle Forbes was PERFECT as Miranda Zero. The scene where she first says "This is Miranda Zero, and you're on the Global Frequency" is also PERFECT, and gave me the same shiver you get watching Harrison Ford tilit that fedora in INDY IV. Gladly, GLOBAL FREQUENCY didn't die under the weight of CGI gophers, monkey swingers and a nuked fridge - it NAILED the first comic "BOMBHEAD" and was a great intro to the GLOBAL FREQUENCY world. And it pisses all over FRINGE, which wants to be a cross between GLOBAL FREQUENCY and THE X-FILES so badly it hurts.
We can't get the original series cast back - a fucking shame, but fine. Whatever. Aimee Garcia was a passable Aleph, Josh Hopkins was charismatic enough as the new guy cop-turned-GF-agent, Jenni Baird was cute (if unconvincing) as a scientist GF agent (she'd have gotten better, I'm certain) - but Michelle Forbes was as sure a fit for a role as Pierce Brosnan for Bond, or as Robert Downey Jr for Tony Stark. She was PERFECT, and if they DON'T get her back, I don't care who else they get - it won't compare. Michelle Forbes IS Miranda Zero.
And THIS time round, do the fucking BIG WHEEL comic, and get it right!!! -
The one where a white supremacist manages to capture Miranda Zero and torture her for info on the GF, while she plays for the time the GF need to find her (an hour is estimated). There is NO WAY anyone else could play this the way Michelle Forbes could. Too strong for pre-watershed viewers, but then the whole concept is. Pull no punches, don't go easy on the governments of the world (because Global Frequency sure doesn't!) and give us the badass adult rated version of GLOBAL FREQUENCY that we all hoped for following that excellent pilot...
-
Now, a few more details wouldn't go amiss, Herc. This article's a bit spare on hard info. Who's on the writing team, who are they looking at for casting, which story are they going with for the pilot (if it ain't BOMBHEAD, then FUCK THE CW) -- get Big Red on the case! We need data, man!!
-
As long as the new pilot is faithful to the comic series, I'm really looking forward to this. Would love to see Michelle Forbes back as Miranda Zero again, but Olivia Williams from DOLLHOUSE might be good in the role as well.
-
That's a great start for any show.
-
Get Carl Rinsch to guest direct the episode from issue 6. Did a good enough job with the Nike parkour ad (see Cool News 47 Ronin post). I would think that only about half of the original 12 issues are suitable for direct translation to CW episodes. The rest would have to be new material (or the violence level would need to be drastically reduced).
-
But you have to admit - wouldn't SUPERVIOLENCE just be the best SF TV episode of anything, EVER??
-
Ro, Kane and i believe she was in True Blood too. Now i'll have to check the comic out. great, something else i have to buy!
-
but Im assuming it would be expensive to shoot this. I hope the CW has the budget. I dont want it to look like Smallville
-
It's more about the ideas than the plot - though some of the bigger ones would take a lot of money to realise (I'm thinking BIG WHEEL, the Takeshi Sato one and maybe HARPOONS). But it's a kind of badass Thunderbirds done like 24, with 1001 interchangeable agents at any given time saving the world. Honestly, this is the best concept for an SF thriller show since THE X-FILES (before it got bogged down in its own mythology). This could be EPIC.
-
It's not among Ellis' very best, but even simply 'good' Warren Ellis is leagues beyond the vast majority of story telling, no matter the medium. Global Frequency makes the most sense by far as a TV series out of any comic series I've read.
-
Her voice is flat and uninteresting and she played a Battlestar commander and an evil succubus from hell on true blood and an airline PR rep on Lost all the same exact way. She bores me terribly. Not a good actress people.
-
Bombhead, Invasive, Hundred, Big Sky, The Run, 001, and Aleph could be done without any real major alterations to the plot lines. I think the rest fall into 3 categories: 1) The budget required to do it justice wouldn't do it justice. 2) The violence would have to be reduced to the level that it wouldn't do the story justice. 3) Combination of 1 & 2. I hope that the nature of the series won't keep them from getting decent actors. There are only 2 real leads, and everyone else, by definition, gets called in for 1 episode only. But you're right: Superviolence and Big Wheel would be awesome viewing.
-
Hope not. There's something about that woman that makes me want her to kick my ass...
-
Which one is "001"? My brain isn't connecting. The others I can ID easily. You know that whoever makes this thing will follow the WB plan regarding a cast. We will NOT get only Zero and Aleph as regulars. They'll insist on "identification" characters like the cop or at least some other continuing field agent. Or it will end up like the first couple seasons of "Mission: Impossible" - they pick a team for each mission, but every team includes at least several of the same actors. It's not "Global Frequency," but I suspect that's how it will/would be done.
-
If you like dudes.

What the FUCK has happened to the geekosphere, and the TBers on AICN in particular? 3 times more people want to discuss a movie for retarded single women in their 40s and tweenagers, than the best fucking SF/thriller comic EVER, getting a pilot made AGAIN??
Bunch of slack-jawed faggots!! This pilot will make you a goddamn sexual Tyrannosaurus... just like me! -
Then I'm into that particular dude. The scene where she takes out a guard at an NSA secret secured location...
Yeesh. 'Scuse me while I go change the keyboard... -
It's a shame she's never appeared in anything seedy enough to satisfy my dark appetites.
-
Given that Talkbacks are invariably about insulting the fuck out of the topic, AICN staff, fellow talkbackers... there's probably more ammunition on the Twilight talkback.
Though I have to say, the Edward Woodward obituary was like 100% in praise of the man, and I think that's unprecedented for this site. -
Yeah, kudos to all TBers on the Edward Woodward TB, he's pretty much a great guy all round, so it good to see this much love for the man.
As for seedy... Have you seen KALIFORNIA? Michelle Forbes is David Duchovny's girlfriend (this is more the CALIFORNICATION Duchovny, though way back in the mid-90s), a fucking hot photographer who dresses all in black (leather pants and cropped tops de riguer) and has a slightly kinky sex life with the DD - you get hints of an S&M thing, but it's never explicit. I almost never noticed Brad Pitt and Juliette Lewis in that movie... Just that hot, hot Forbes bod... -
"but it's never explicit" Sad but true.
And so its not seedy enough :)
