The Threat Of A McG Directed 20,000 LEAGUES UNDER THE SEA Movie Has Passed!!

Published at:  Nov 17, 2009 7:57:21 AM CST

Merrick here...

Variety says that McG's 20, 000 LEAGUES UNDER THE SEA project...the one in which McG wanted to cast Will Smith...has spun apart and won't happen. At least, it won't happen under McG's guidance.

The picture, tentatively scheduled to begin production in February, has been halted indefinitely, and McG is no longer steering the ship.

The studio confirmed that it won't proceed with the film for now, and reps for the director confirmed he has withdrawn.
[EDIT]
Disney's next big water-based shoot will likely be the fourth installment of “Pirates of the Caribbean.” Pic is expected to set sail in May, with Rob Marshall in talks to direct.

..says Variety HERE.

An early draft of this project's script drew considerable ire from the Geek sector (script review HERE), whose ire was fanned by the release of the director's much ballyhooed (but roundly unsatisfying) TERMINATOR SALVATION. Before T SAL's release, McG trumpeted his team's concept for a fifth TERMINATOR installment (details HERE); their involvement is now uncertain due to the TERMINATOR franchise being up for sale (more HERE).

This was a shitty sounding project to begin with. No one tops James Mason as Captain Nemo. So let's leave it at that, Disney. Speaking of, give us a restored HD transfer of 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, and theatrical rerelease as well. Hey, I can dream, right?

It was the stupid story and terrible acting, and the having christian bale involved at all, that ruined the film. The action sequences were well doen, and the film had some lovely shots.

    T Sal : Y'all Gots to Chill

    by roc ingersoll

T4 Suffered from strange pacing and a weak story. But the action was absolutely top notch, and the movie overall kicked hell out of T3. Bale's no Olivier, but he's at least as good as Michael Biehn at the Teeth-Gritting Action Guy thing. What the hell were you all looking for that you didn't get, besides the undeniable brutal charisma of Arnold (which you knew you weren't going to get when you paid your ten bucks)? Go back and watch T2 and T3 again: The scenes where stuff isn't being destroyed are almost unbearable. Though, granted, the blowin' up does more than make up for the cringe-inducing dialogue. T4 was a damn good summer popcorn movie.

But I agree it could have been better. McG just has no idea how to build up characters and relationships between those characters. he can direct action pretty well, but everything between those action set pieces feels dull and confused.

    by mr gorilla

T4 was, quite simply, a bad movie. I'm very sorry to say this, as McG was very humble in the reviews, and he also delivered some amazing images and one good action sequence. Also, he was genuinely ambitious, which is always to be applauded. In other worlds, while being a failure, I didn't find it to be evil, like any Michael Bay film. However, I was an hour into T4 and still hadn't met any character I really wanted to root for, or found the least bit interesting. Zero emotional connection, in other words - and I feel that emotional connection really is the key to these rollercoaster blockbusters. Look, on the other hand, at the first scene of Star Trek : it brought a tear to your eye, and totally got you emotionally connected to the world. Ever better, try the first ten minutes of Up.

Christian Bale didn't want to do T4

    by iamlegolas

McG had to badger and convince him to do it, so therefore it was McG's fault for getting him involved. And unless there was studio interference, T4 is absolutely McG's fault, he signed off on it in the end. That's what the director is afterall, the guy in charge (under the money men).

    by ray gamma

Even dumb popcorn movies have to somehow make you CARE, in order to be a good movie.

Anyway, when did it become acceptable to deliberately make a disposable "summer popcorn movie"? The equivalent movies from twenty or thirty years ago were things like "Superman", "ET", "Star Wars: A New Hope". In fact, even the likes of "Jason & The Argonauts", a true popcorn movie if there ever was one, is still a welcome diversion on a Christmas afternoon TV. Are any current popcorn movies likely to still be remembered so fondly in thirty years' time? I doubt it.

Give Terminator to Fincher to fix

    by seth gecko

Cast Ed Norton as Connor and you have a very different franchise. His Bruce Banner was brilliant in an otherwise unremarkable INCREDIBLE HULK. Fincher would give it the dark cerebral edge that Cameron gave the first two masterpieces in the franchise. However Fincher did Alien 3 and hated every second of it. Well we all know who had the last laugh. He is Hollyowood's most gifted filmmaker.

    McG/Will Smith

    by frozen01

I was very happy to find out that these two will be nowhere near 20,000 LEAGUES. I'm just really afraid that this means the movie has been permanently shelved. I would have loved to see an awesome, steampunked-out movie with great no-name actors (I'm still waiting for the true death of the Movie Star - for every good movie with big name stars I can name you 3 other, better movies with no-names who did as well or better in their roles). Casting Will Smith was a joke... did no one learn from WILD, WILD WEST? I'm not saying he can't act, but there are certain roles he can and cannot play. Casting someone just because their name is recognizable just doesn't work anymore.
