The Threat Of A McG Directed 20,000 LEAGUES UNDER THE SEA Movie Has Passed!!
Merrick here...
Variety says that McG's 20, 000 LEAGUES UNDER THE SEA project...the one in which McG wanted to cast Will Smith...has spun apart and won't happen. At least, it won't happen under McG's guidance.
The picture, tentatively scheduled to begin production in February, has been halted indefinitely, and McG is no longer steering the ship.
The studio confirmed that it won't proceed with the film for now, and reps for the director confirmed he has withdrawn.
[EDIT]
Disney's next big water-based shoot will likely be the fourth installment of “Pirates of the Caribbean.” Pic is expected to set sail in May, with Rob Marshall in talks to direct.
..says Variety HERE.
An early draft of this project's script drew considerable ire from the Geek sector (script review HERE), whose ire was fanned by the release of the director's much ballyhooed (but roundly unsatisfying) TERMINATOR SALVATION. Before T SAL's release, McG trumpeted his team's concept for a fifth TERMINATOR installment (details HERE); their involvement is now uncertain due to the TERMINATOR franchise being up for sale (more HERE).

never thought i'd see the day lol.
oh and thank god mcg isnt directing this, thank god.... -
no please, kill me
-
There is a GOD. This Hack should be forboden from making another movie...........EVER!!!
-
But not nearly enough to fill a 2 hr movie. A Jules Verne story needs someone with some real directing chops. And it needs to be in period. Scorcese gets my vote.
-
At least its over before anyone got hurt. Now we just need to do something about that Fright Night remake.

Gabba-UK, why stop there, I vote Peter Weir
by nomoredirtyjokespleaseweareyanks
Lets make this fucker for real...
-
And more time to McG to suck HUGE amount of cocks to get more directing jobs.
-
This was a shitty sounding project to begin with. No one tops James Mason as Captain Nemo. So let's leave it at that, Disney. Speaking of, give us a restored HD transfer of 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, and theatrical rerelease as well. Hey, I can dream, right?
-
and good riddance
-
jules verne is pissed.
-
It was the stupid story and terrible acting, and the having christian bale involved at all, that ruined the film. The action sequences were well doen, and the film had some lovely shots.
-
No. It was McG's fault. The guy is an abomination.
-
I think this is a classic he hasn't mo-capped yet. So watch out.
-
T4 Suffered from strange pacing and a weak story. But the action was absolutely top notch, and the movie overall kicked hell out of T3. Bale's no Olivier, but he's at least as good as Michael Biehn at the Teeth-Gritting Action Guy thing. What the hell were you all looking for that you didn't get, besides the undeniable brutal charisma of Arnold (which you knew you weren't going to get when you paid your ten bucks)? Go back and watch T2 and T3 again: The scenes where stuff isn't being destroyed are almost unbearable. Though, granted, the blowin' up does more than make up for the cringe-inducing dialogue. T4 was a damn good summer popcorn movie.
-
But I agree it could have been better. McG just has no idea how to build up characters and relationships between those characters. he can direct action pretty well, but everything between those action set pieces feels dull and confused.

Captain Nemo is Indian. Not African American, not white
by requisitemonkey
Indian. That's the way he was written. So that's the way he should be portrayed. This is for the best.

Battleship and 20,000 Leagues under the Sea? I smell a theme. His agent must be shitting in his pants.

this guy calls Mortal Kombat phenominally cool.
-
Now let's put someone like Jean-Pierre Jeunet or Ridley Scott on it.
-
T4 was, quite simply, a bad movie. I'm very sorry to say this, as McG was very humble in the reviews, and he also delivered some amazing images and one good action sequence. Also, he was genuinely ambitious, which is always to be applauded. In other worlds, while being a failure, I didn't find it to be evil, like any Michael Bay film. However, I was an hour into T4 and still hadn't met any character I really wanted to root for, or found the least bit interesting. Zero emotional connection, in other words - and I feel that emotional connection really is the key to these rollercoaster blockbusters. Look, on the other hand, at the first scene of Star Trek : it brought a tear to your eye, and totally got you emotionally connected to the world. Ever better, try the first ten minutes of Up.
-
Christopher Nolan... Darren Aronofsky...
-
McG had to badger and convince him to do it, so therefore it was McG's fault for getting him involved. And unless there was studio interference, T4 is absolutely McG's fault, he signed off on it in the end. That's what the director is afterall, the guy in charge (under the money men).
-
Now we just need to stop him from making anything else.
-
Not that it has FUCK ALL to do with McG, but some D-Bag thought it needed to be brought up, made $201,693,495 (adjusted). It seems that LOTS of people liked that movie. In fact you are probably one of the first people I've ever heard bad-mouth it.

And if you even bothered to read the post you are criticizing,
by revenge_of_fett
you would see that I BASH T4 you stupid cunt hair! I say that the action sequences are cool enough to redeem it, but just barely.

...Paul W.S Anderson announced he was going to direct!!!

marineboy...careful there, FETT loves that guy.
by nomoredirtyjokespleaseweareyanks
but if we are talking box office asshole then I guess by your standards Transformers 2 is better than The Shawshank Redemption..
-
Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines is FAR BETTER
-
...my keyboard. Anyhoo, T3 is FAR BETTER a movie than T4. McG destroyed one of scifi's greatest stories. DESTROYED it. The director is the captain of the ship, and whether you blame the script or the acting, or whatever, the buck stops with him. Hack with a capital H. Keep his paws off anything that has the slightest chance of being cool...
-
It stars that mcdreamy guy from grey's anatomy, michael caine, mia sara (loooove her in legend and ferris bueler, she wasn't cast right as Harley Quinn in birds of prey, though). Still haven't opened it, everyone's too busy.

But, who will direct Sense and Sensibility and Sea Monsters?
by royston lodge
I just picked up the novel, and I'm already in love with it.
-
Maybe you could put a "NOT SAFE FOR YOUR TWO-YEAR-OLD DAUGHTER" warning in the header before posting a signature image of yourself with an elephant trunk for genitals and a gaping cannonball wound in the torso. I had some explaining to do there.
-
Even dumb popcorn movies have to somehow make you CARE, in order to be a good movie.
Anyway, when did it become acceptable to deliberately make a disposable "summer popcorn movie"? The equivalent movies from twenty or thirty years ago were things like "Superman", "ET", "Star Wars: A New Hope". In fact, even the likes of "Jason & The Argonauts", a true popcorn movie if there ever was one, is still a welcome diversion on a Christmas afternoon TV. Are any current popcorn movies likely to still be remembered so fondly in thirty years' time? I doubt it. -
Ever hear of B-movies? Yeah.
-
...is there any corner of the internet where you haven't acted like a complete and total ass-hat?
I guess since you got ran off of Rotten Tomatoes, the only thing left for you to do was start ruining the Ain't It Cool talkbacks, huh? -
Who geve T4 to this hack anyway??? Absolute failure of a movie, it was far worse than any Bay film...
-
Take GI JOE, for example. GI Joe's third act was essentially an underwater action/adventure.
-
I was getting banned from AICN YEARS before I ever stepped foot in RT. And yes, ALL must breath my flatulence!
-
You'd think Disney would owe him as one of the reasons for the success of LOST.
-
Cast Ed Norton as Connor and you have a very different franchise. His Bruce Banner was brilliant in an otherwise unremarkable INCREDIBLE HULK. Fincher would give it the dark cerebral edge that Cameron gave the first two masterpieces in the franchise. However Fincher did Alien 3 and hated every second of it. Well we all know who had the last laugh. He is Hollyowood's most gifted filmmaker.
-
i actually let out a girlish yelp at reading that paragraph.
-
....a god/allah/buddah/whatever after all!I'd like to see an update of this concept with today's technology, but I'm glad this hack won't be stinking it up.Oh, and I'd rather see Nemo played by someone of a nationality ala the original character concept, instead of throwing in the likes of Will Smith. He would have seemed so wrong for this role, but I would have expected nothing less from McG.
-
Pride and Prejudice and Zombies is better :)
-
I was very happy to find out that these two will be nowhere near 20,000 LEAGUES. I'm just really afraid that this means the movie has been permanently shelved. I would have loved to see an awesome, steampunked-out movie with great no-name actors (I'm still waiting for the true death of the Movie Star - for every good movie with big name stars I can name you 3 other, better movies with no-names who did as well or better in their roles). Casting Will Smith was a joke... did no one learn from WILD, WILD WEST? I'm not saying he can't act, but there are certain roles he can and cannot play. Casting someone just because their name is recognizable just doesn't work anymore.
-
1.) McG will NOT direct 20,000 Leagues Under The Sea.
-
Giant Squid has got to eat.
-
to update it, they should change it to a nuclear bomb
-
Sanity and common sense is being exercised by a studio suit? Perhaps the world is scheduled to end in 2012 after all.

I'm fine with Disney remaking 20, 000 LEAGUES UNDER THE SEA, but it has to be based on the fucking book, none of this prequel bullshit, McG's version sounded GODAWFUL
