0.6 (0.5) (0.4) (0.5) (0.6) (0.5) (0.5) (0.5) America’s Next Top Model

* CBS’ “Medium” garnered the most Friday viewers and tied with “Ghost Whisperer” and “20/20” for the top spot in 18-49.

* “Supernanny” hit a season high in 18-49, again leaving “Ugly Betty” ABC’s lowest-rated show. E! reports ABC is contemplating moving “Betty” into the 10 p.m. Wednesday timeslot currently occupied by the cancelled “Eastwick.”

* “Smallville” hit an 18-49 season high with its episode about shapeshifting Wonder Twins Zan and Jayna, characters introduced on the Saturday-morning cartoon series “Super Friends.”

* “White Collar” halted at least for the moment its precipitous decline.

* “Leno” hit its all-time low in 18-49 for the fifth time in 15 days. It continues to pull a weekly average a bit under that magical 1.5 mark we keep hearing is key to the series making $300 million annually:

1.2 (1.2) (1.3) (1.4) (1.5) (1.5) (1.7) (1.8) (5.3) Mon
1.9 (2.0) (1.8) (1.8) (1.8) (2.1) (2.3) (2.5) (3.4) Tue
1.4 (1.4) (1.5) (1.5) (1.8) (1.7) (1.9) (2.0) (3.5) Wed
1.6 (1.6) (1.5) (1.6) (1.8) (1.7) (1.6) (1.7) (2.7) Thu
1.2 (1.2) (1.2) (1.4) (1.3) (1.4) (1.4) (1.6) (2.2) Fri

Now that Leno pulls an average of 1.46, does NBC only make $299 million annually or does it lose $300 million? Another key question: If the profit is now $299 million, does that $299 million make up for the money lost by NBC and its affiliates owing to the decrease in ratings for post-primetime newscasts and NBC’s late-night line up?

Are House and Bones still beating Dollhouse?

    by tall_boy66

I'm wondering what Fox is expecting to pull with this stunt. They put in House & Bones to, what, "fool" advertisers into giving them higher rates? I mean, jesus, can't they know the ratings when they air Dollhouse, like they're planning to do for a solid month and a bit in a few weeks? Are the House & Bones combo ratings the END of setting the ad rates? Don't they know it'll drop or are advertisers that stupid?

    by v'shael

They're doing about the same as Dollhouse, so the rates to the advertisers would probably be the same. The main savings will be for Fox, since repeats are relatively free compared to the cost of an episode of Dollhouse.

Back when Pa Kent was alive (season three? Four?), there was an ep where Clark's vision got impaired somehow, and he wore glasses in that ep. That was the first "super-hearing" episode, I believe. And macking on Erica Durance...Tom Welling gets PAID to do that.

Are they just going to keep making new episodes about some problem with the ship; or will they introduce a new super evil to the show. So far in SG they have had Snakes in the head - robots - life suckin zombies - crusading demigods - and now what is it going to be? And wtf attacked them in the first episode, why hasnt that been explored at all?

    Saen: Villains?

    by v'shael

Well, maybe you weren't paying enough attention to the pilot, as we know they were attacked by the Lucian Alliance.

Given that the format of the show involves the Destiny moving much further/faster than usual FTL ships from episode to episode, they should never be in the same place long enough to have the same aliens crop up week after week.

Personally, I'm glad they aren't going to go the Voyager route, where we see the moronic Kazon for years on end.

I'd be quite happy to see a small self-contained show dealing with the problems of just trying to survive on the ship for a while. If the plots are well done and the characters are well drawn, I don't think we need villains this early in the show.

    Sweeps & Ad Rates

    by buffywrestling

Actually, sweeps week doesn't set rates for all advertisers—just local ones. The standard half-hour of television contains 22 minutes of programming and eight minutes of advertising, of which six minutes is national and two minutes local. Ad rates for the six minutes of national advertising (typically bought by large companies like Ford and Budweiser) are based on Nielsen ratings, which sample the year-round viewing habits of a small number of "Nielsen families" across the country. Rates for the two minutes of local ad time are based on sweeps, which run for just four weeks four times a year (in February, May, July, and November) Networks then use the results to set local ad rates for the next three months.
The savvy networks soon realized that a year's worth of advertising dollars was riding on 16 weeks of viewing habits, so they began to fill the sweeps weeks with spectacular one-off gimmicks to get viewers to watch. Today, this practice makes sweeps weeks almost perfectly unrepresentative of the year as a whole. Advertisers sometimes grumble about this bait-and-switch, but sweeps have managed to survive nonetheless. Networks defend sweeps because they fear that actual year-round viewership is lower than the current system suggests; with a more accurate count, they might have to charge less. Advertising agencies and media buyers are paid a percentage of their clients' total ad spending, so they have an incentive to support a system that inflates ad rates. And the local advertisers—because they are scattered across the country, make small ad buys, and have less clout than their national peers—are stuck because the networks deliver an audience of unparalleled size that they can't afford to boycott in an attempt to force a change in the system.

    The Leno Black Hole...

    by lock67ca

...is sucking in every show around it, and taking them straight to ratings hell. Fuck the profit NBC makes off of Leno's ass. What good is it if it's destroying every other show on the network, and making NBC a laughing stock in the process? NBC's reputation may never be repaired. All thanks to Leno.

Oh, and if they make another Superman movie, give the job to Welling. He's old enough to play the part now, and he's more than earned it.

    by thusspakespymunk

Ratings Armageddon, indeed. Shows like HEROES and UGLY BETTY and SUPERNATURAL (and I hear SMALLVILLE) are quality-wise better than they have been in years (I like all 3 of the previously mentioned shows and have never seen a full ep. of SMALLVILLE except for the Impulse first and second appearances). And ratings will not come no matter what the creative people do? What the HELL is wrong with people?

    by buffywrestling

And although SV is better than D'House ever was in the ratings, both are still only building on the initial small demo they got during the Live + SD number. In the scheme of things, they are still both relatively low numbers no matter what the percentage is.

    by big jim

"... Wednesday timeslot currently occupied by the cancelled “Eastwick.” "Does this mean ABC now won't be airing the remaining "Eastwick" episodes. Or are they going to do it like they did for "Pushing Daisies", "Eli Stone", and "Dirty Sexy Money", air them on Saturday nights during the Summer?Think someone at NBC has noticed Leno's Tuesday night ratings are significantly higher than any other night? Could it have something to do with "The Biggest Loser"? Does not bode well for scripted shows.

    SGU

    by daydaykay

I have to disagree with anyone who has faults with SGU. I find it to be well written and enjoyable. It doesn't need a villain. The conflict is man versus nature and man versus the unknown. Plus, we are being led to believe that Carlyle's character knows more than he's giving up. It's a mystery. And I really loved last fridays episode. Sure time loops have been done (ST:TNG with Kelsey Gammer as the Captain)but it was exciting. So don't hate. Enjoy.

I think you have your blaming priorities all goofed up. NBC should be the object of your disaffection. They (NBC) knew what they were going to get with Leno, basically, the same thing he was doing late night, and so if you are to find fault, find fault with the suits at NBC. What they should have done is to keep Leno Late Night instead of forcing him out in favor of Conan who has completely tanked. He may be more popular with the 18-49's but he is drawing woeful total numbers.

Ok, laying the blame for NBC's current state solely on Leno was a bit much. The main part of my argument was against NBC staying with this show, solely for the dollars Leno is bringing in, while every show around it is being dragged down by it. I'd even argue that Conan would be doing much better in the ratings if people weren't switching channels, or turning off the TV as soon as Leno came on. He was doing ok before Leno's show started its nosedive.

SGU episode "Time" was actually good

    by turketron_2

Best episode they have done of the new series yet. Here's to hoping there's more drama of the science fiction variety and less of the Young and the Restless variety in the episodes to come... but I've heard that the previews for the next episode deal with more of the latter. Bummer.
Killing Chloe would be one great improvement that the show could make. What a useless character that makes other characters (Eli, for example) worse when she is on screen. Someone should push her into the unstable wormhole kawhoosh the next time they dial a planet.

    by deandome

...the fact that the hunky star is openly gay hit Perez & other 'news' outlets the week after the premiere? I hope not...it's an OK show, and I certainly don't care. But WC is not a comedy or a chick show, it's an action drama...and maybe some of the dudes (some women, too) who watch it were turned off by this. BTW, I'm LOVIN' on Natalie Morales (of the much lamented "Middleman") being added to the show (replacing the cranky, somewhat-hot lesbian character from the pilot)...and looking super-hot. If only they could find a way to get her in skin-tight latex, like they did on Middleman. She brings good wit & humor to her characters, too..I see a bright future for her.
