I like what I'm seeing, and hope it artistically and honorably complements "Band of Brothers."
Luckily, I have no reason to think it won't.
    I'll be watching.

Can we get this treatment for Vietnam or Korea?

    by chewbacca_khan

How about one of the wars that's a little less black and white? I loved Band of Brothers, Saving Private Ryan, The Thin Red Line...lots of these things. But WWII at this point is losing its punch because it's over 60 years ago and we've all seen the story about how the Allies saved the world. At this point it seems like these series are about making us feel good about our actions as anything else. Let's get some quality TV devoted to some of the other, more painful, conflicts we've been in. I'd be more interested in the drama of those wars than another show about the unambiguous conflict that was WWII.

I don't care if it's about WWII, if there's a Spielberg movie with Joseph Mazzello and a character named Dr. Grant, I'm making a Jurassic Park joke.
Seriously though, this looks typically amazing. I might need to find a friend with HBO (or a better-paying job).

    Too Good?

    by atheistscum

Band of Brothers was amazing, and by the end you really felt like you had been through a harrowing experience with the soldiers. But most people do not realize just how horrific the War in the Pacific really was - each island invasion was a blood bath, followed by a systematic extermination of every non-surrendering Japanese soldier on the island. I fear this miniseries will be great, but that the sheer horror of the War in the Pacific will make the show almost unwatchable.

hands down the dumbest comment I've read in a while on here. and that's saying a lot. most people think that these type of films and series show the bravery and sacrifice that these men gave to the world, to a generation of people that might not otherwise appreciate it. calling it "soldier porn" is pathetically ignorant.thanks for the chuckle, though. you can't make up some of the moronic shit in the talkbacks, I swear.

    by emeraldboy

game of thrones is magnificent. secondly. I dont think hollywood has the balls or the brains to make a controversial war movie or tv series on the vietnam war or korean war. I would love to see really definitive bio on kissinger, one that is warts and all. that man has blood on his hands but that will never happen.

And maybe Russia could you know make their own fucking TV series about it, then. Not our job to do their work if we got plenty of our own tales to tell.

I meant the other, "good" allies.
Ugh, lemme just boil my point down to what I am getting at: don't fault us for not making films about the Russian experience in the Second World War. They are capable of producing such films themselves.
And Enemy at the Gates wasn't too bad a film, come to think of it.

What I mean is, sure, it would be *nice* if American studios made films that portrayed other nations' experiences during the War. But they cost a hell of a lot of money to produce, and audiences can be fickle about that sort of thing. You can't hold it against a studio (and, as some people seem to, a country) that doesn't want to take that kind of financial risk.

    by bizarrojerry

Like 50% of the movies in the 80s were controversial movies about Vietnam. Platoon, Full Metal Jacket, etc. Those movies are about as negative as you can get about war. And MASH -- the movie and TV series -- was a comedy, but it never portrayed war as anything less then horrible and stupid.
