A Sequel To PURE COUNTRY Is Coming?? Co-Written By LOIS & CLARK's Dean Cain??

Published at:  Nov 16, 2009 4:58:09 PM CST

Merrick here...

YOUNG GUNS director Chris Cain, who also helmed the George Strait vehicle PURE COUNTRY in 1992, is sequelizing the later film with the help of his son Dean Cain - as in: Superman/Clark from LOIS & CLARK Dean Cain.

Dean is co-scripting the new film...called A PURE COUNTRY GIFT...with daddy Chris, who'll also direct. Dean has a role in the new film as well.

Talk of a sequel to PURE COUNTRY has be in the wind for a while, so this follow-up is not altogether surprising. What is odd here is that the conceit is switching genres. Cain's 1992 film was a straight-up portrait of a tempest-tossed Country singer who is struggling to balance his hollow personal life with his increasingly shining stardom. The new film, however, will take on a more metaphysical/supernatural slant.

Country music A-lister George Strait will star in a follow-up to his 1992 film "Pure Country" for Warner Bros.

"A Pure Country Gift" is directed by Chris Cain, who also helmed the first film. He co-wrote the new screenplay with his son, "Lois & Clark" actor Dean Cain, who also has a role in the film. The father-son collaboration is their first.
[EDIT]
"Country Gift" is about three angels who give the gift of a beautiful singing voice to a baby girl.

"In her climb to fame and fortune, she breaks some of the angels' rules, so they take away her big voice," Chris Cain said. "Life has rules; if you follow them, life works. That's the moral of the story."

...says THR HERE.

I saw PURE COUNTRY back in the day. I don't recall many specifics, and I'm really not a Country music fan, but I do remember thinking that it was a surprisingly slick film. While pretty much by the numbers, it was quite earnest and not altogether uninteresting. Not sure how the character(s?) will play with angels & whatnot...guess we'll see.

Here's a clip from the first film:

I was all set to make some smart-ass remark, like how this is about the uncoolest news to ever appear on a site that is ostensibly about "cool news" but then I thought, hey, it's just a slow news day, so cut them a break. But, really, this shit is some pretty harshly uncool news.

Thrilled to see two things I can't stand (country music and religion) lumped into a single movie. Please continue grouping all the garbage together for easy cinematic avoidance; next add a few remake/reboot/rebullshit nuggets in. The father-son connection adds further chewy goodness. Fucking lame.

The moral of the story is blind obedience to rules? If you don't follow the instructions of gods minions you're fucked?

    Sounds inspiring and heart warming.

Why don't they just get Kirk Cameron to star in it and call it a day. I'm sure he's more of a draw to the intended audience.
