A Sequel To PURE COUNTRY Is Coming?? Co-Written By LOIS & CLARK's Dean Cain??
Merrick here...
YOUNG GUNS director Chris Cain, who also helmed the George Strait vehicle PURE COUNTRY in 1992, is sequelizing the later film with the help of his son Dean Cain - as in: Superman/Clark from LOIS & CLARK Dean Cain.
Dean is co-scripting the new film...called A PURE COUNTRY GIFT...with daddy Chris, who'll also direct. Dean has a role in the new film as well.
Talk of a sequel to PURE COUNTRY has be in the wind for a while, so this follow-up is not altogether surprising. What is odd here is that the conceit is switching genres. Cain's 1992 film was a straight-up portrait of a tempest-tossed Country singer who is struggling to balance his hollow personal life with his increasingly shining stardom. The new film, however, will take on a more metaphysical/supernatural slant.
Country music A-lister George Strait will star in a follow-up to his 1992 film "Pure Country" for Warner Bros.
"A Pure Country Gift" is directed by Chris Cain, who also helmed the first film. He co-wrote the new screenplay with his son, "Lois & Clark" actor Dean Cain, who also has a role in the film. The father-son collaboration is their first.
[EDIT]
"Country Gift" is about three angels who give the gift of a beautiful singing voice to a baby girl.
"In her climb to fame and fortune, she breaks some of the angels' rules, so they take away her big voice," Chris Cain said. "Life has rules; if you follow them, life works. That's the moral of the story."
...says THR HERE.
I saw PURE COUNTRY back in the day. I don't recall many specifics, and I'm really not a Country music fan, but I do remember thinking that it was a surprisingly slick film. While pretty much by the numbers, it was quite earnest and not altogether uninteresting. Not sure how the character(s?) will play with angels & whatnot...guess we'll see.
Here's a clip from the first film:

I had no idea anybody had even seen that movie much less decided to make a sequel of it. Good lord.
-
Next thread then...

I'm an old school country music fan and even though I havn't listened to anything current by George Strait in ten years....fuck it , there's still no way in hell i'm catching this lifetime movie when it comes out next christmas which im sure is the plan.

I was all set to make some smart-ass remark, like how this is about the uncoolest news to ever appear on a site that is ostensibly about "cool news" but then I thought, hey, it's just a slow news day, so cut them a break. But, really, this shit is some pretty harshly uncool news.
-
Chandler was by far the best thing in the first one...
-
Do aliens appear somewhere in this movie? How is this even remotely related to genre entertainment? Because of Dean Cain? Now thats a stretch!
-
about the heartland. hear a song about my life. yeehaaw!
Yeah, I listened to the soundtrack. :p
-
Now he just needs a Willie Aames and we can remake Zapped. I'd buy that for a dollar.

Theme song! Which is worst ? Which is worst? Pick one before a douche says first

The pilot is great. Dean Cain was a good Superman, but an excellent Clark Kent.
-
Bruce Cambell was on L&C! The Chin rules.
-
I meant Campbell.
-
I can't begin to understand why AICN would even acknowledge this.
-
...and Billy Ray Cyrus as George Strait as the girls dad...very metaphysical!
-
Sounds gaytarded.
-
That this is one of those hoekey christmas tv movie deals. Somebody is paying this guy a shit ton of money to slap "Pure Country" at the top of a christmas/music story and he did it. Dean and Dad Cain gotta eat.
-
Seriously.

Can't the guy just be happy being attractive enough to get lots of tail and be done with it?

WHA!!!!!

Thrilled to see two things I can't stand (country music and religion) lumped into a single movie. Please continue grouping all the garbage together for easy cinematic avoidance; next add a few remake/reboot/rebullshit nuggets in. The father-son connection adds further chewy goodness. Fucking lame.

The moral of the story is blind obedience to rules? If you don't follow the instructions of gods minions you're fucked?
Sounds inspiring and heart warming.
Why don't they just get Kirk Cameron to star in it and call it a day. I'm sure he's more of a draw to the intended audience. -
That for some unknown and bizarre reason sucks me in if it's on. I know it's not very good but it has that weird kavorka.
-
Totally agreed. What a piece of brainwashing bullshit that is.
-
Weird, man.
-
it's referring to the laws of physics. Then, this might turn out to be the most interesting film of all time (and space).
-
how cool is that?
-
The best looking women in the music field. Not even close.
-
at least Superman was actually Superman and I was younger so it kept my attention. I mentally tuned out of Smallville years ago and it hasn't caught my attention since.
-
was the reason to see the first one, but this one is going to suck
-
as long as John "I'm a Punk Rock Legend" Doe as the drummer who is terrible on drums (the porch scene still cracks me up... would it have been so hard to make him the bass player?)I'm in!
I remember after the movie came out all the hicks were weirded out that Earl had "another" career. -
I live 75 miles from nashville tennessee. The Country music capital.....Pure country is like Casablanca to some people around here. I'll be hearing all about that shit for months.

Enuf said.

although i remember an episode where Lois got brainwashed and became a superheroine with a really stupid looking costume, man. But yeah it looks positively solid compared to that angsty diahrea bubble that is smallville.
