Figures in grey are for repeats.

* “Bones” decisively beat “FlashForward” in 18-49 for the first time. The Fox procedural is now in second place at 8 p.m., a major victory for a network that has long struggled on Thursday nights.

* Fox’s “Fringe” rebounded a whopping 29% from its series low last week, but remained a distant fourth in its brutal timeslot.

* The “CSI” crossover stunt reaped a big rebound for the franchise’s mothership.

* “CSI,” “Survivor” and “Vampire Diaries” all matched their season highs.

* “Grey’s” rebounded strongly following weeks of decline. “Private Practice” soundly defeated “The Mentalist” at 10 p.m., reversing the prior week.

* Once again, the only Big Five show "Leno" managed to beat Thursday was "Supernatural."

    by general_soreness

how much higher The Office's ratings are than any of the other NBC comedies airing the same night. Do that many people really just tune in for that one show only and then change the channel? Is it the Jim/Pam thing drawing in more female viewers or is Steve Carell really that big of a star? I'm not saying it isn't deserving. It's one of my favorite shows but I don't think it's necessarily "better" than the other three NBC offerings.

    by richard_gere_raped_my_gerbil

+ Some of the flashforwards were genuinely interesting and i'm looking forward to seeing how they're resolved.+ The overarching storyline is compelling and i'm looking forward to finding out what caused the flashforwards.- Ralph Fiennes rocks. I'm doubtful that his brother attended the same acting school. In fact, i'm doubtful his brother attended any acting school at all.- I'm not liking Charlie from "Lost" in this at all, which is a complete turn-around from...well, "Lost".- Too much filler in each episode. I'm sick of waiting until the last five minutes for any real substance to the story.I'll stick with it for now but it might lose me soon.

I got the feeling I missed an inside joke on Bones

    by big jim

What was up with all the extras needing to get things signed? Hodgins signed something and flirted a bit with the girl who brought it. A scene or two later, Camille signed a half dozen or so documents on clipboards, Every other shot it seemed someone new was bringing in a document on a clipboard for her to sign. At first I thought it was a continuity error until I realized it was always someone different. I'm guessing it was some inside joke (something to do with a network note about more action during lab scenes maybe?), or the extras were production people or contest winners. Or maybe it was just really poor continuity.

Really not much more to add. Now, Fringe really needs to move to Tuesdays. The show is fantastic, but it's in a really tough spot right now. I'll be extremely disappointed if it doesn't last past this year.

And last week's low number for Fringe was most likely due to the World Series. I've been hearing that most cable/satellite providers didn't show it airing that night. Fortunately, U-Verse rocks and it recorded it for me.

    Random Thoughts...

    by general_soreness

    1) Have to admit I was disappointed in last night's Parks & Rec. After the borderline-terrible first season, it just kind of gelled all of a sudden this season and seemed on the verge of becoming awesome. Especially since last week's "Ron & Tammy" episode was probably the best single episode of any comedy so far this season (excluding Sunny of course). This episode was just sort of boring, filled with scenes that went on a too long that didn't build to anything.

    2) I'm still on the fence about The League. Has some good moments but it's not quite as dirty or subversive as it likes to think it is. Also, it's not looking good that it lost half it's Sunny lead in audience this week.

The thing about what you consider filler is that it may seem meaningless but without it in every episode, then the last five minutes wouldn't make sense or feel important. For instance: the daughter showing up when the father thought she was dead. I agree some filler may seem like fluff but most of it is vital to telling the overall story.

You're probably right. I've probably been spoiled by "Lost" where the majority of each episode feels as though it's building towards something and that 'something' always occurs at the end of the episode.I haven't seen this week's episode yet but last week was the first time that i felt Flashforward managed to do the above.I'm still watching it eight episodes later so I guess it's doing something right.

    by jimbojones123

OTS Jane of Bosco -- pan right to red to right of door frame -- zoom in and rack focus on Red. Seemed VERY intentional and not subtle enough. I call red herring with Bosco being set up to be Red John, but not really. Or I may be overanalizing and he is Red John. Pictures will point to Bosco = Red John very soon. Wouldn't it be a kick if RJ set up Jane working for the CBI?

    by gislef_crow

They seem to be like political polls. Yes, they're a nice snapshot of a moment, but they don't add to much. So Fringe went up 28%. So...? It's not a reflection of the episode's quality, or survival chances, or whatever. Overall trends are kinda useful, but the "Gee, it's up!" Gee, it's down!' doesn't seem helpful or useful.

I didn't know if it was intentional or not, but I liked to think it was.FlashForward has the dumbest FBI agents ever. The first time I saw the tattoo I thought it was some kind of insignia. It's not like buddy was sporting a unicorn or one that says "Betty 4-Ever", it's 3 military looking stars. Why they felt this mercenary type belonging to some secret army had a unique, one of a kind tattoo, baffles me. I sometimes find FlashForward way too dumb for me.

Would be surprised if Red John were not Minelli, the CBI boss, on The Mentalist...Gregory Itzin does a wonderful job with the character, and he's the logical choice. The only thing sadder...

    by clubside360

The only thing sadder than these 18-49 Nielsen posts is the belief in some circles that they matter on the macro level. A low-rated show with passable 18-49 ratings can hang on, while a show with great total numbers thrives regardless of its 18-49 numbers. The Mentalist may have barely been beaten by the loathsome Private Practice in 18-49, but in total ratings The Mentalist won by nearly five million viewers, just as CSI easily beats the wretched Grey's week in and week out. Great episode of Bones, maybe with a little more time it can dispatch Survivor and retire more of the reality garbage that pollutes prime time.

    Last Week's Fringe Drop Explained

    by blameitontheboogiepop

I almost missed Fringe myself last week; I would have missed it if there hadn't been an article alerting me to it on this site. My DVR insisted that Game 7 of the World Series was happening instead. I'm betting most guides, either printed or digital, said the same thing. Combine that with the two week hiatus that preceded last week, and the sudden drop to 1.7 seems understandable. Fortunate for Fringe that it's back to its post-post-season numbers.

They get better and better each week (and Alison Brie is so good I didn't recognize her as the same actress who plays Trudy on Mad Men!) And jimbojones123, you nailed it: it is a sitcom written like an hour-long drama. To think the creator got his start on Channel 101 AND based this show on his time at Glendale College. It's just perfect, and more hilarious (and surprising) as it progresses.

    Supernatural and Fringe

    by maelstrom_zero

Supernatural this week was amusing at time. . .but with the Apocalypse happening and all, I wish they'd get back to the main storyline and all. The continued emphasis on monster of the week type episodes really bog things down--case in point, the Paris Hilton episode. Still though, the whole LARPing episode was worth it, I think.
On a completely different note, Fringe needs to stop with random monster of the week episodes and get on with its arc. Supernatural can rely on self-enclosed episodes because the episodes often prove entertaining and can rely on strong leads (well, at least it can rely on Jensen Ackles.)
Fringe's problem is that its strongest character is a secondary one, and the episodes don't have the kind of solid execution that Supernatural sometimes has. . .and as a result the self-enclosed episodes generally suck. As I recall, the majority of Fringe's good S1 episodes were the ones where they actually addressed the war between 2 worlds arc.
Also, more evidence that Fringe writers are stealing from X-Files: the concept of this week's episode was basically lifted from the X-Files show about "the Pusher," who could mind control people, and forced Mulder into a long involved manhunt for him. At least Fringe is copying from a decent source.

I think it was last season. However, they do explain why he doesn't like to wear them."Bones starting sucking when they started pushing the love interest between the two main characters."Agreed. Whenever it comes up I get a "Moonlighting" vibe from the show (not the good kind). Never liked the Angela/Hodgins relationship either. One of the things I like about CSI - they tend to stay away from exploring the characters' personal relationships. If I want to watch something about people who work together getting it on, I'll watch Grey's Anatomy (or porn).

FlashForward is super tedious, I think it's the first time I've given up on a TV series so early in its run. I read the book on which the series is based, totally different and better for it. The book is more of a jumping of point so don't read it expecting any of the same story.

Still enjoying Fringe, more scenes with Olivia Dunham getting her kit off would be good though!

Fringe is not "ripping off" the X-Files

    by dasaroo

It's called an "homage"- look it up in the dictionary.

The very first ep this season featured a flash of the X-Files on screen. Virtually this entire season could be considered homage- shape-shifting assassins from "another place", creepy humanoid living under the ground, the "shadow man" from the previous ep - not to mention the congressional hearings trying to shut down their division- all of this can be considered an extension of some of the themes of the X-Files. I would not call it a rip-off, however.

Can I ask a question about Parks and Recreations?

I understand that it is sort of a spin-off of The Office. But, why did they need to get a guy who looks and acts exactly like John Krasinski to play the Jim role?

CSI "trilogy" was a full flameout

    by jt kirk

Totally lazy shit. Just 1 character visits the spinoffs, and it's the new guy no less. That's not a trilogy, that's just a guest spot with a theme. Meanwhile, Jay Leno hemorrhages nearly half the audience he got from his lead-in. Way to go Jay, squandering NBC resources like there's no tomorrow. And maybe with everything riding on you, NBC won't have one.

Its all my fault for not watching it yet, but if you're going to drop that plot twist right away, i'd appreciate a spoiler warning... i don't blame you at all, though, because (i haven't read the rest of the talkback) you were just trying to bring up a big moment to spark discussion of a show that deserves to be discussed--especially with that bomb dropped.

I'd like to know if ANY CW SHOW has EVER beaten a major network show in a primetime slot...I do seem to remember a major network show that had trouble competing with CW... it was some show called Dollhouse... i'll go out on a limb here and make the bold prediction that a cancellation is imminent.

    Gunter, you are absolutely correct

    by stabby

Amy Poehler's character is a female Michael Scott, no doubt. But, at least they changed it up by making the character female. There is no difference at all between Jim and his Parks' doppleganger. It's kind of creepy actually. Even his story arc is exactly the same and his girlfriends' ex is the same actor as Pam's ex (correct me if I'm wrong).

"his girlfriends' ex is the same actor as Pam's ex "

    by big jim

No, different guy (Parks ex was, kinda, Summer's ex on the OC) although they do look alike, kind of like Jim and the Jim guy on Parks.Ryanbraun14, to further your argument, Leno does not go head-to-head among the so-called "big five". Fox & The CW don't program 10:00pm. So, while Leno did pull higher numbers than Supernatural, he did it up against Private Practice & The Mentalist. Supernatural's audience chose it over Grey's, CSI, Office/Parks & Rec, and Fringe. Besides, there should be a certain amount of handicapping for CW shows. There are a lot more NBC affiliates than CW ones out there. Kind of like last week's box office. Sure, Christmas Carol won the weekend with a B.O. take of $30 million, and Precious came 12th with only $1.875 million. However, CC opened on 3,683 screens; Precious on 18. CC, while winning the weekend, averaged $8,000 / screen; Precious, per screen, took in an average of $104,000. Which was the more popular film depends on how you interpret those numbers.

Why can't we have a variety of shows?

    by pennyb

I'm always surprised that TV folk seem to want ONLY very high ratings or doom to a show. Why can't we have a variety of shows? What is the deal with the under-49? Most of them don't have money to spend anyway! We're all different---and there should be a vast number of viewing choices.

PennyB: Its the advertisers who want 18-49 demo

    by growltiger

The networks are just the singing for their supper. For some reason advertisers want to reach that demographic and the networks are obliged to find it. If the advertisers woke up and thought that the demo to reach must be 35 to 65 then programming would change faster than you could see it.

If 18-49 is the desired demographic,

    by big jim

and Thursday is the big advertising night because films open on Friday, why then are most movies PG-13? I always hear film studios cater to teenagers because they have the disposable income to waste on whatever is current or new and are easily influenced. If that's true, wouldn't the 13-17 crowd be the desired demographic, at least for certain advertisers?

    Bosco is not Red John

    by centilope

At least I don't think so. It's either President Logan or a character we have yet to be introduced to. But he is probably going to get killed in episode 10,11 or so. Right now they're trying to develop his character, make him more likeable so his death will have a bigger impact.
But that's just my prediction. We'll see how it goes soon enough.

Agreed, Bosco is not Red John...

    by stegman84

I mean come on, actually far from subtle, they are laying the red herring clues on way too thick to try and get you to think Bosco might be Red John, when it is still far more likely to be Gregory Itzin's character. I mean just tonight they had Bosco drive Jane around in a red car, almost every time they were in a scene together they tried to put something red or red related about, and, in case all that was still too subtle, in the final scene they paned across a book shelf that had a book about communists (the red threat...) on it, Jane was reading from a red book on the couch, and the scene faded with a blurred red disolve. Personally I think it's all smoke and mirrors to get people to stop thinking it's probably Itzin, which it probably still is.If they had any real balls though, you know who'd make a great Red John reveal? Lisbon. After all, she's about the only person on the show that has any control over Jane at all, and we even don't know the exact circumstances of how Jane became part of Lisbon's team, just the general reason why he started working for the CBI. Of course you could also have one of the other team members be Red John, the seemingly not so bright Rigsby for instance, but I don't think it would be anywhere near as neat. Like I said though, I doubt they'd have the balls to do anything like that, and more likely it's Gregory Itzin's character of Minelli, or even someone not yet shown on the show, or who did a single guest appearance in season one sometime, in traditional mystery by-the-numbers lameness.

    Question

    by blade_runner

How do the ratings work. Do only those shows that are watched 'live' count? For instance, our house watches Bones, Fringe, Flash Forward, and CSI. Rarely do we watch any of them live, as we are normally watching the show from the previous hour (or night) on DVR. With the advent of TiVo and DVR, how can these ratings really reflect how popular a show truly is? Just curious.
