Next Week the TV Transforms when Social Networking, Music and Movies Come Alive on Xbox 360 Facebook, Twitter, Last.fm and Zune video Launch Nov. 17 on Xbox LIVE The topic du jour was all about TV, but this morning at NewTeeVee Live – an industry conference that explores the future of television – Xbox LIVE general manager Marc Whitten confirmed the next wave of social entertainment is coming to Xbox LIVE on November 17. Starting next week, Facebook, Twitter, Last.fm and instant on HD video from Zune will be available on Xbox 360 consoles, transforming Xbox LIVE into the largest social network connected to the TV with exclusive features custom-designed for the living room. “We’re delivering some truly exciting social entertainment experiences to our members,” said Whitten. “Xbox LIVE’s differentiator has always been our community, and we’ve already seen a tremendous response to these features in our public preview. It’s the community that drives us forward and allows us to pioneer new ways of connecting people through the entertainment they love.” · Facebook*– Update your status to share what movie, game or entertainment you’re enjoying, connect with friends and view their Facebook stream, status updates and photos on the big screen – all seamlessly integrated and custom-built for Xbox 360. You can even compare your Xbox LIVE and Facebook friends lists to see which of your friends are on LIVE. · Zune – Zune video on Xbox LIVE offers a full fidelity experience with instant on HD in 1080p and 5.1 channel surround sound. No waiting for downloads or buffering, it’s there at the press of a button. You can also share the experience with up to seven friends through voice chat and Avatar integration on the TV screen – it puts a whole new spin on “movie night.” · Twitter*– Stay in the know by discovering, posting and replying to Tweets right on your Xbox 360. You can even view friend profiles, trends and conversations, or search to see who’s tweeting about your favorite game. · Last.fm* – Discover more music and explore endless personalized radio stations with Last.fm on Xbox 360. Skip, “ban” or “love” tracks to create your perfect mix—we’ve even built in “Gamer Stations” with game-related types of music selected specifically for the gaming community (Available in the U.S. and UK) In addition to these social features, Xbox LIVE will also be debuting “News and More,” a new section of the “Inside Xbox” channel, transforming Xbox LIVE into a full-fledged media portal. With a regularly-updated stream of content from MSNBC, The New Yorker and Dilbert, “News and More” brings the latest in current events, arts and entertainment right to your fingertips. All of these features build on the wild success of Netflix on Xbox LIVE, which quickly established Xbox 360 as the most-used living room device for streaming Netflix content to the home1. Only on Xbox 360 can you find the best in movies, music, games and social networking all in one place, tailor-made for the TV and connected to more than 20 million people around the globe. “From the launch of Xbox LIVE nearly seven years ago, to milestones like Video Marketplace, Netflix and the New Xbox Experience, we’ve continued working toward our vision of connected entertainment for everyone,” continued Whitten. “I’m proud to say that next week marks another great stride in fulfilling that promise, and we’re already imagining what the future has in store.” So what are you waiting for? On November 17, turn on your Xbox 360, log onto Xbox LIVE and enjoy the world of social entertainment at your fingertips. Not an Xbox LIVE Gold member? Starting November 20 (12 pm ET / 9 am PT) until November 23 (12 pm ET / 9 am PT) Xbox LIVE Silver members can enjoy the latest Gold features for FREE – including Facebook, Twitter and Last.fm! There’s tons more to experience with Gold as well. Play the latest game titles like “Halo 3: ODST” online multiplayer, participate in “1 vs. 100,” host an Xbox LIVE Party or even video chat with friends. All of these Gold-only features will be available all weekend long for anyone to try. * Xbox LIVE Gold adult account required to access these features. originality in gaming industry has died just like in the movie industry.

This news makes no mention of videogames, or anything that involves narritve storytelling. Isn't that the one thing that unifies everything (movies, comics, games) that is discussed on AICN? Please clarify, AICN.

... because everyone who would talk about MW2 is busy playing MW2. Personally, the only thing I have to say about the game is that it is totally bland.

If I wanted to do of that shit, I'd get on a computer with a keyboard so I wouldn't have to scroll to type... oh and fuck off microsoft, way to alienate your hardcore gamers by making sure they can't get onto live, make a system you don't actually need to mod and nobody will, end of story
Nov. 13, 2009, 12:54 p.m. CST
You feel alienated because MS banned you? MS doesn't need or want hardcore gamers who steal everything they play.
Nov. 13, 2009, 12:56 p.m. CST

i'll never understand those people who spend so much time in there. what the hell do they do? me, i log in and see the most recent posts by friends. sometimes i'll leave comments and sometimes not, then i might post somethingy myself but then i'm gone, its a 10minute visit at most, usually a 2-3 minute one. what the fuck do these people do in there that takes hours? my sis-in-law is one of those and i do not understand. as for this hitting Live, well thats utterly pointless. i'm not so lazy that i cant sit at my computer to check that crap. and plus i'm not so addicted that i need access to it from everywhere.

Its the best one in the series if you actually play through the story and not just the online. Now, Halo is bland.

The Nintendo Wii has it's problems, but if it wasn't for that console's popularity, either MS or Sony would own our living rooms... and they don't play nice. They want to control media, the entire process, every channel.

If you're going to have a game section on this site, where are your news and reviews of ACTUAL things that gamers care about? Modern Warfare 2? Left 4 Dead 2? Uncharted 2? Assassin's Creed 2? I mean, they're all sequels, you have no excuse of not hearing about the franchise before... This feels like a Microsoft planted advertisement. No one who plays games wants shitty extras like twitter and facebook on a console. they already have those things on their computers. and Zune interactivity?? shouldn't have than have happened DAY ONE of Zune Launch? pft.
Nov. 13, 2009, 2:11 p.m. CST
I've been in beta for this update since day one. Day one was the one day I looked at any of these features and then I pretty much forgot about them until today when I checked them again and they still suck. I don't really understand the point when it's so much easier and quicker to just use them on the computer. IF you could use them while you're playing a game? That would be awesome. But I'm not going to stop in the middle of a game, exit to the dashboard, fire up the twitter application, write something stupid, then start the game back up. It's silly. It takes 5 minutes to do something on the Xbox that I could do in 30 seconds by just walking over to my PC. I thought last.fm would be the best feature because I could listen to music while playing games....wrong. That doesn't work during gameplay either. You have to load it up just like the Netflix section and play music while you just stare blanky at the screen. These features would be great if you could do more than one thing at a time. Listen to music while you twitter or check your twitter while you play a game. But the way it is set up now is completely useless. Why bother with last.fm when I can just listen to my ipod while I play? Most people would describe me as a complete Xbox fanboy but these features are a bomb.
Nov. 13, 2009, 2:17 p.m. CST
I got the Live preview a few weeks ago, like prime666. Twitter and Facebook are alright, made even better once my friends let me know that I can just hook up a regular keyboard to the Xbox via USB (why can I do that and not be able to hook up a normal USB hard drive?!?) My biggest issues with those features is that my computer is 4 feet away from where I set to watch TV, where I can do the same thing with a better interface. The Zune HD videos are pretty nice, the streaming feature is good for those of us stuck with the 20 GB hard drive. I would rather use Netflix though. And last.fm does rock, but they do need to integrate it into the user interface and Xbox guide so we can listen to Last.fm music in games.

The XBL is too damn expensive when compared to PS3's free subscription. However you can't play gears of war or HALo on sony's black box.Gates is a fucking tool for outsourcing CSR jobs to India but that happens almost everywhere nowadays. The Elite console is a ripoff as it does not have Blu-Ray,no built in WiFi or once again, a free online subscription. However the advantages are;superior controller, better looking games, custom sountrack option and better streaming of videos. If not for these features, my WreXbox would be just another doorstop.

but I'll borrow my friend's copy and if it's as good as the first (although i have reservations about killing hostages..i mean WTF)then i'm sold. I don't give two shits about facebook and titter, social networking is a fuggin fad.whatever happend to making friends at owrk or school/ picking up chicks at a bar or party? MS don't force this shit down our (the hardcore gamer) throats, the mii...er i mean, avatar thing is cool and i love the DIVX codec, but facebook can kiss my azz.

You forgot HALF-LIFE 3.
I'm beta-testing it, and while I'm a little disappointed with how Alyx interfaces with her mother/sister Chell on the early levels, I thought the whole "game within a game" thing with PORTAL 2 was pretty novel. As for the Gordon Freeman levels...still pretty glitchy. The Combine Controller sequences locked up my console twice, and that whole thing where Barney and Dog take on the captive Gonarch on the Combine homeworld...a real mess.
The cut scenes detailing the relationship between Black Mesa and Aperture were much appreciated, though. Here I was thinking the G-man was an alien...LOL.

What a load of crap. Mircosoft took everythin "social" out of the XBOX when they forced developers to make games that were only one player unless you were conected to XBOX Live. The thing that caapuled the XBOX was things like Halo parties where people would bring over console and link them and play together, it actually was social. Now 99% of games you can only play with other people through XBOX Live, there is nothing "social" about it.

You have dozens of gamers on here who would give there left nut for any sort of thing being published on here and would gladly give up time to let you know what was happening but yet you would rather give us Soical Networking crap? yes I know you all like it, and you all Twitter like mad but come on, this is just lazy. This is the 2nd one to die on me, but the first one I've sent back to MS to be "fixed" under the "out-of-warranty" repair. I guess it wasn't possible to fix the "E74 error", because they're sending me a "new" console. It's taken about 3 weeks for the "repairs" so I hope the refurbished console works when I get it back. While the consoles can definitely be problematic, (this last one worked fine for 3 years, btw) I don't understand all the hate for the cost of XBL, though. Just because Sony's giving it away doesn't mean that XBL Gold isn't worth the cost. Lots of stuff that Sony doesn't have, at least initially, like Netflix, GTA IV downloads, and now FB, etc. (yes, I know Sony has Netflix now, but they didn't have it for over a year.) Is XBL worth it? For $48/ 13 months? I say, "yes, it is!" Now where's my damn console? (Oh, and I'll probably be buying a PS3 this year, now that it's cheaper.)
Nov. 14, 2009, 8:48 p.m. CST
The Wiitards were enough to make me sell my 360. I'm 40 years old, I don't want to play dress up. Sorry...
Nov. 14, 2009, 11:15 p.m. CST
None of that stuff you mention is worth the fee. Practically all of it is free from your regular PC or from the PS3 that it staggers my mind as to why you'd pay $50 to use that? And GTAIV downloads??? Really? You do realize that you can get those even with a silver account? So now LIVE is good because you pay to pay for stuff you'd otherwise would be paying for anyway? There's really no good reason for it!

It's just called The Old Republic, and it's a MMORPG. I can't believe it's been 10 years since KOTOR. What an amazing game. I sort of feel the new one won't be as good, an MMORPG seems too big, but it is BioWare, and they claim that every piece of dialogue with every ancillary character will be completely voice-over and not text. That's pretty crazily ambitious.

Nov. 15, 2009, 7:45 p.m. CST
I have an older iMac, not an Intel, so I can't watch Netflix for free on my PC. And even if I could, I still couldn't watch it in the comfort of my living room on my 32" HDTV. And the $48/ 13 months, via Amazon, is only $3.70/ month, and for that I get thousands of hours of online multiplayer, VOD, voice chat, etc. (and now FB, too!) So yes, it IS worth it! To me, anyway...

Nov. 16, 2009, 2:09 p.m. CST
The point remains that Microsoft is ripping you off when you should be demanding that stuff for free! It doesn't matter how affordable it is! Hell I wouldn't put it past them to integrate AICN talkbacks into their service and only make it available to Gold members! Given how this site posts news, usually when it's only relevant to the 360, it's only a matter of time. But still... Why??? Why pay for shit you SHOULD be getting for free??? Heck, in this case it's shit that was always free to begin with!
