Writer Bill Birch! Talks About! The SHAZAM! Movie!!

Published at:  Nov 11, 2009 10:49:43 AM CST

Merrick here...

Cinefools talked to Bill Birch about his efforts on the SHAZAM! movie script, currently being developed for director Peter Segal (GET SMART, NAKED GUN 33 1/3, THE LONGEST YARD).

Bill, who's been working with Geoff Johns to break a story for the film, is the latest in an impressive parade of screenwriters brought in to take a crack at bringing this concept to the screen (past scripters include William Goldman, Joel Cohen & Alec Sokolow, and John August).

The way the story is shaking out, Geoff and I see this not as "dark" as Dark Knight but definitely as cool. It'll probably end up with a PG-13 rating.

What is the most important aspect you want to bring to Shazam?

Tonally I think it's important to successfully find the balance of comedy and danger in the story. That’s a major aspect I’m focusing on. Frankly hitting the right tone is what’s going to either get this made or keep it in development hell.

As for whether Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson might appear as Captain Marvel, or antagonist Black Adam, Bill says...
I know that Pete Segal and Dwayne have a relationship that was solidified when Pete directed Get Smart. As far as him being committed? I'm sure it'll all depend on the script. That being the case I don't write with anyone in mind.

All of this, and more, can be found HERE at Cinefools.

Note how the girl he's comforting is hiding her face in shame...

    Will it be called "Shazam"?

    by big jim

or does the studio worry people might get confused and think it to be a remake of Shaq's "Kazaam" and stay away? Could call it "Captain Marvel but that's not how most people know the character. My guess is, it's titled "Captain Marvel" but every poster and ad for it has the words "Shazam" plastered across it too. What's about these rumours of the Black Cat being in Spidey 4? Same old, same old, or possibly something to them?http://tinyurl.com/yabgkl5

As cool as Dark night with PG 13 rating

    by lochkray

It really is a statement on the artistic merrit of a director to indicate how "cool" his movie will be based on the rating. Same way McG defended his Terminator. Jeez, where are the artists? Aliens, Predators, Die Hards (first 3), Terminators were all cool with an R. Star Wars, Indiana Jones (fist 3), Jurrasic Parks, all cool with a PG. The old fucker from UP, Shrek, and the rat from Ratatoullie were all cool with a G. All are movies where the directors sat down to direct a film, not because they can hit a "cool" demographic, but because they had an entertaining vision they wanted to put on the screen. I know its an old "I hate Hollywood" gripe, and its tiresome to read about in talkbacks on this site, but man...when the director is saying it up front, it hurts.

    Perfect movie for Dwayne Johnson

    by spacelab

A little boy turning into a powerful Superhero but keeping his boyish attitude; Played right this could be the superhero version of Big, and there's great potential.

ie: a fully-dressed superhero doing boyish stuff like playing with trucks, etc

    Seems perfect for The Rock

also: can he fight like a boy would, like windmill arms and lots of crying?

It won't be called "Captain Marvel"...

    by chewtoy

...Because Marvel Comics owns the trademark for that title, meaning only they can put out a product with that name. DC comics ran the original publisher of "Captain Marvel" out of business through lawsuits claiming he was a rip-off of Superman. Nobody could pick up the character without being sued by DC, but when the name became available Marvel bought the trademark. Then later, DC comics picked up the rights to the original Captain Marvel character (being the only ones who could publish him, since they wouldn't sue themselves). So they have the rights to him, and can call him Captain Marvel, but they can't use that name as the title to any products... hence the "Shazam" title.

    by lprothro

If the Rock took on the title role. Otherwise the material itself holds no attraction for any potential mainstream movie-goer. Dwayne is the catalyst this endeavor needs to make it work. No, not as Black Adam either. He has the build, the look, the hairline, and is one of the few actors with an equal amount of child/adult demographic appeal. Whoever said it should be a Mummy/Superman hybrid is spot on. Dark Knight shouldn't even be uttered in the same sentence.

    by calico pete

That something like this has to be in development, in the writing stage, for a bazillion years. The story has to be "broken", like this is some complex shit. Come on. It's a goddamn comic book. Enough. Write it, film it, good night. Move on. It's not an adaptation of War & Peace, or Dune, or even Watchmen. I don't give a shit one way or another, but how much money has been wasted on this already? It's not like the script, whatever it is in the end, is going to be leagues better than any other version they had going in the past. Diminishing returns here.

I'd love to see a movie from Black Adam's perspective. That way, The Rock gets to be the headliner and perfectly cast while Warburton, as CM, could steal all the scenes as the "villain". Am I crazy? I love the thought that Villains are the heroes of their own stories.

CAPTAIN MARVEL = a super powered BIG

    by negative man

At least that's how they should approach SHAZAM! That same kind of humor and pure fun. What's not to love about the idea behind Captain Marvel? An orphaned kid that selflessly does what he can for those around him because he feels it's the right thing to do. Because of this he is chosen worthy by an ancient wizard to be the avatar for all that is right and pure. And with one magic word he can become a man that can save the world from the deadly sins that plague it. It's an idea of simplistic beauty. Sadly, very few writers could ever pull him off in comics. Here's hoping they get it right in film.

I still think there's still an action star in Dwayne Johnson. He hasn't played one since Doom and maybe becuase that failed miserably we know why he doesn't. He was kind of a goof in Southland Tales but the past few years have been family friendly comedy. It wasn't THAT long ago that Arnold passed him the action star mantle in "The Rundown". I guess when your pigeonholed your pigeonholed.

    It's not nearly as bad

    by rorschach1

as it sounds. The premise of a young person becoming one of the most powerful people in the world is interesting. He sees everything as black and white, and kids have this natural tenacity that adults lose, so he won't ever quit no matter how much he gets knocked down. I'm sure that (If it happens) it'll be a coming-of-age type story. And Geoff Johns is a really great writer for comic books, but I'm not willing to assume that he's going to swoop in and save this. Shazam is a horrible name though, always has been. But I doubt it's going anywhere. Maybe even add a following title, "Shazam: whatever". It's doable. Not huge on Patrick Warburton, But they usually surprise us anyways, and choose someone we never expect.

One of the biggest dick moves Stan Lee ever pulled

    by zargotron

And he pulled a LOT of dick moves..the guy is a total prick...but one of the biggest dick moves he ever pulled was creating the Captain Marvel character just to take the lapsed trademark name from the Fawcett character. Mar-Vell was the total suck until Jim Starlin totally revamped him and then he killed him with cancer and to keep the trademark going they had that fucking stupid character Monica Rambeau created just to maintain the trademark name and to fuck over DC who had purchased the rights to the REAL Captain Marvel character. Stan Lee is a real fucking grade-A asshole who made his career out of screwing people over and taking all the credit. Fuck Stan Lee.

Well the Marvel Method for one

    by zargotron

Where he would give an artist a general idea for an issue, they would draw the entire thing coming up with the basic manner in which the story unfurled, and would then later fill in the dialogue. Then he would claim to have come up with the entire thing. Stuff like this is what drove away people like Jack Kirby and Steve Ditko. He was basically an editor doing fill in dialogue but claimed to be the ultimate author of the stories and also the co-creator. There are loads of anecdotes from people who worked at Marvel under Lee and how bad the Marvel Method was for people who were forced to share co-credit with Lee for stuff he pretty much had nothing to do with. One of the prime examples is how the Galactus Trilogy went down. Lee told Kirby that the FF should fight God or something along those lines and it should be two issues long. Kirby went apeshit with the idea and created Galactus, went overboard and did three issues and then as an added bonus he created the Silver Surfer. When Lee saw the Surfer he supposedly said something like "Who's this guy?" and Kirby explained that he decided to give the "God" character a herald. Kirby intended the character to be a completely non-humanoid character which explains why he was always so puzzled by the concept of emotions. Later Lee took the characer totally away from Kirby and gave it to John Buscema and gave him an origin that totally contradicted everything Kirby had intended for the character. Also, supposedly his brother Larry Lieber wrote a LOT of stuff and Lee took credit for it. Then there is the ego-maniac asshole move of putting his own name in huge letters above other writers and artists in the credits which fooled a lot of kids into thinking Lee was the guy behind lots of comics written by other people. What other comics had the Editor In Chief's name in huge fonts above the actual creative team? None...none at all. The man used his position to forge a false version of himself that a lot of people believe because they grew up with that false image. I'm sure some of the things Lee claims to have come up with are partially true, but the man is full of bullshit for the most part. He manipulated and used people and took most of the credit for their work.

Is there anyone here that might seriously wan to discuss this news? I mean this site has become a bastion for morons and infantile idiots.
Heres some info, Captain Marvel (SHAZAM) is old, been around a while, hes not really ripping anyone off.
Its not lame, its kind of a cool idea, a kid is imbued with powers beyond his control and becomes a hero in the process. Granted Billy Batson shouldn't be played by a 12 year old (maybe bump it to 15 or 16).
Also, I'm sorry Patrick Warburton would be the SECOND best choice for Cap, First should be Brandon Molale...
