A great extended trailer for UP IN THE AIR just landed at Apple Trailers! Go watch!!!

Published at:  Nov 10, 2009 6:18:21 PM CST

Hey everyone. Capone in Chicago here.

I'm going to have a review of UP IN THE AIR for you very soon, but I already know one thing I feel about it very clearly: it's the best movie I've seen all year so far. I still have a handful of end-of-year things to see between now and the end of the month, but it's difficult to imagine that I'll connect to anything left on the release schedule the way I did this movie. And somehow writer-director Jason Reitman captured me on an emotional level with characters that I have very little in common with. That's a remarkable feat, no impossible, but very difficult. I don't see myself in any of these characters at all (although I'd certainly like to see myself in Vera Farmiga--Hi-Oh!), and I still was able to identify and understand where they were coming from. But more on that later.

I love the movie so much that I can't wait to see it again, and I even love watching the trailers over and over again, because after seeing the movie, I realize there are a couple glimpses of scenes in the trailers that aren't in the movie. Earlier today, Apple Trailers put up an extended trailer for UP IN THE AIR called "Everyone Needs a Co-Pilot", and it shows more scenes that haven't been released yet and gives what I think is the best representation of this movie that I've seen in any of the released footage.

And the best news that I've gotten in recent weeks is that the film platform release begins earlier than I'd been told previously--December 4--and that Chicago is one of the initial cities in which it will be released. Enjoy the new feature, and get ready to see a truly great work of cinema.

    "Best movie of the year"

    by the_shogun_gunslinger

yeah right... I've NEVER heard hyperbole like that on AICN before.

Am I the only one who is tired of this ADD staff?

Get some new blood on here, Harry. This is beyond lame.

    by cobbio

Looks pretty good for reasons I can't quite explain, mostly because I've just downed a pint or so of really tasty microbrew with dinner. But I like Reitman and I'm excited to see this movie.
    Thanks, Capone.

SO CAPONE, if I don't like this, and I tell you as much, ...

    by manifestchaos

You're going to tell my it's "my fault" for "falling for the hype again" and spending money on it in theatres. Just like PARANORMAL ACTIVITY, right, you hypocritical fuck?

    Worth the hype

    by trumpyeatspotatoes

Saw this at TIFF, and it is indeed fantastic. Don't mistake some of the lines and scenes in the trailer for it being some sort of goofy fish-out-of-water romantic comedy; it's much, much more.

    by adelai niska

I'm fairly certain his review never mentioned hype or falling for said hype or it being manifestchaos's fault that he fell for said hype. I'll gladly call out AICN staff for weak positions (like calling Christmas Carol and epic failure after a mainly positive review), but I think anyone using the word hypocrite here is nutso.

Kick-Ass teaser is out, but you rather report on an Up In The Air trailer whose only difference with previous trailers are critic blurbs.

I can see why they're not reporting on Kick-ass

    by critch

    Looks absolutely embarrassing.

Probably aren't reporting on the Black Cat news because it's a bullshit rumor.

Not to say anything about "Up in the Air", because after Juno, I'll never see another independent movie again. Hopefully Reitman pays the same price Cody and Fox paid for that.

Comingsoon.net has the new Clash of the Titans teaser and the Kick Ass teaser. Way to go Harry--keep up the mediocre work. Oh, by the way, Drew's site, Hitfix has both teasers on his site too. No wonder he left.

    I'm actually really anticipating this

    by maelstrom_zero

. . .and I have no idea why. I mean, I enjoyed Juno, so the same director is a good thing. And typically, Clooney is a great actor. But the level of anticipation that I have for this movie is the same level that I had for District 9. . .and the reason for it is inexplicable to me.
I honestly hope that this movie is everything that it's cracked up to be. I've missed the Hurt Locker and Black Dynamite; I hope that I can actually make it to this movie. . .I'm sure as heck going to make a point to catch this as soon as it comes out.

    by garbageman33

To me, all the plot developments seemed like they happened to get the story from point A to point B. They never felt organic. And then, there's the problem of being asked, during a recession, to sympathize with the rich guy coldly lying off people. "But he has no human connection. The airline miles are a coping mechanism". Yeah. Boo fucking hoo.

    Two questions:

    by countryboy

    1) What was so great about JUNO??? I honestly don't get it. How was it well-directed? I don't remember a single interesting shot from it. Nor do I recall any performance being especially standout; Ellen Page delivered nearly every line with an unvarying wise-beyond-her-years world-weariness, and no one else was noteworthy in any way. The best scene was when the adopting couple had their big fight, because it actually seemed real. (I think my favorite line from that whole overwritten movie was the simple, almost whispered, "Your t-shirt is stupid.") In all sincerity, what was so amazing about it?
    2) Why are there so many movies about disconnected people who finally connect with others? Why is Hollywood so obsessed with that story? Watching this trailer, I felt I'd seen the movie a hundred times already; this is just a different arena. The critics' near-hysterical praise (Jason Reitman is "the hope of cinema"?!), far from convincing me, is just baffling. This movie looks UTTERLY conventional and stale. Does anyone else wonder why we see this same story over and over?

Trailer dialogue sounds "scripted" in a weird way

    by wyld stallyns rules

I dunno, it just didn't sound natural coming out of the actors' mouths. I don't know if that's a problem with the performances, or the writing, or what.
