How Tough Is Hollywood?? Sometimes Even Will Smith And Steven Spielberg Can't Get A Project Going...

Published at:  Nov 10, 2009 11:29:43 AM CST

Merrick here...

Will Smith and Setven Spielberg's OLDBOY project has gone belly-up, according to Latino Review. The film was being spun as a direct adaptation of Nobuaki Minegishi and Garon Tsuchiya's manga as opposed to a "remake" of Park Chan-wook's 2003 feature film.

According to a trusted source…

…It’s DEAD!

Mandate and DreamWorks didn’t see eye to eye therefore DreamWorks has apparently walked away.

No Spielberg.

No Will Smith.

THEY’RE OUT!

Hence no stateside Oldboy remake…or whatever you want to call it.

...says LR HERE.

The 2003 film is available in various permutations HERE, and it's also rentable via Netflix (disc and streaming) HERE.

The source material has been amassed into a series of graphic novels which can be found HERE.

Anyway, Spielberg shouldn't be allowed anywhere near a movie like this. Only a filmmaker with balls could remake this, assuming anyone could. And I don't know at what capacity Will Smith would have been involved, but couldn't they have used some imagination and cast Jackie Chan in the lead-roll? They could have sold it to Disney

So the Spielberg/Smith bloat has been relieved from this movie. Thank God. Listen up, Hollywood! A movie like this doesn't HAVE to cost $50 million before a single frame of film is shot due to ridiculous salary demands from stars both in front and behind the camera. A remake of Oldboy should be made for less than Will Smith's salary alone... And with a better actor.

It's wrong. It's just plain wrong. I get sick to my gut when i think about the films hitch didn't get to make as a wise more seasoned director because the studio thought he was an old fossil. Stop doing this. There are remakes that suck, just plain out suck, and then there are remakes that deserve to be, Steve isn't a hack. I'm sure his version might have been interesting. Manga is tame

    by #1 zero

My guess is that spielbergo and Big Willie were going to capitalize on the basic concept. Man imprisoned for 15 years, doesn't know why, goes out for revenge has to solve the mystery over any incestual content. The manga is straightforward like that, no incest, but a premise does not a movie make but it would have been interesting to compare the two films for posterity's sake. BTW, AICN, what's the story with Terminator franchise going on auction block. Did they really lose that much on Salvation. Looks like Halcyon films lost their gamble when they bought the franchise or maybe they wanted to "flip" it all along and make a profit just by selling the rights.

BTW, that Larry Clark really is fucked in the head. Djou ever see his "Teenage Caveman" DTV movie? It's an update of the old horror film, which is fine... except for the 15-minute break, right in the middle of the story, where we get to watch the teens taking drugs and having sex. For no other reason, far as I can tell, than to allow Larry Clark to stage and film that sequence.

Remaking it would be like doing an Etch-O-Sketch of the Mona Lisa. Utterly retarded.I know. Originality in Hollywood

    by rogueleader66

Died years ago. how else does one explain every single fucking movie under the sun getting remade? Some movies are ripe for remakes and can actually benefit from a modenr retelling. Some, not ALL. Hollywood seems to think that modern visual effects and whatever else will make remakes better. WRONG. Red Dawn, a great movie and one that does not need to be remade. The subject matter was relavent at the time, thinking Russia could invade the US was plausible at the time. Now for the remake the bad guys are who? China? Lame, i'm sorry but the whole idea is lame and a disgrace to the memory of Patrick Swayze. Oh another one, Arthur. I don't know if it is still a live project, but last I heard that idiot Russell Brand was going to star in it????WTF??? No one, I mean NO ONE can replace nor duplicate Dudley Moore's classic comedic performance, especially not this tool Brand. Also, the story does not in any way benefit from a modernized retelling.I could go on and on, the bottom line is Hollywood is lazy, has been for a long time. Only once in a while are we treated to something really special, like The Dark Knight or Iron Man. If the movie going public were not dumb sheep, they would demand better for their movie going dollar, but they are dumb so they won't demand better. Sad, so very sad.

    by rogueleader66

To me is erratic as an actor, he can be awesome (in Ali and Pursuit of Happiness) to kinda dullish (Wild Wild West, he sleptwalked through that turd). Most of the time I find him good to very good. But regardless of what I or anyone else thinks, he has something that is almost as important as acting skills, charisma. That can get you just as far as good acting can and in some cases, you can make a living from it, look at Arnie, made a whole career out of his charisma, never was a great actor, even he admitted that. Smith is definitely a better actor than Arnie, but the guy has something people just like, like him or not.

It's not like anyone praises him as some wonderful actor or anything. He's pretty much an action star, and he's certainly more convincing than most action stars. Occasionally he delivers a better-than-average performance along the way (I Am Legend).

To which I pointed out "she" and I were probably the same age and I thought twilight was head-scratchingly awful. And btw my last post is aimed at a certain person who called me out for no reason and showed no hint of it being a joke, so I put two of their fave recent topics (incest porn and stewie dreaming of shya lebuff) together in a little playful jab. The best news I've heard (or read) all day.Old Boy is such a great film, I really wouldn't want them to Americanize it (yes I'm an American). If they ever do remake it I hope they'd keep the same story, plot twists, etc.

    by bacardirocky

People claiming he doesn't really need to fess up. He was good in Ali, good in I Am Legend (dumb movie, but good job acting) and 7 Pounds was some of his best acting work to date. As I stated earlier, I am glad they aren't doing this film cause quite frankly I thought the original film wasn't that good. For those who do like Oldboy, why do you like it so much. What was it about the film that you find so thrilling and or engaging. I found myself struggling to finish it.

Another unnecessary remake.Spielberg is having a rough time of it lately - he struggled to get financing for Tintin, and now this. Could just be the current economic climate; could be indicative of something deeper. Spielberg is not the force he once was; he just isn't that special anymore. And that brings me no satisfaction to say. But I really think he's lost his audience. His name or upcoming projects don't instill the excitement that they used to. Indy 4 was utter garbage (it actually gets worse the more you watch it), and to have a three year gap between it and Munich, and then three years between that and his next project, Tintin, is troubling. He's still probably the biggest name in the film industry, but he seems to be being slowly, but surely, passed by - certainly when it comes to the domain of genre movies and blockbusters. Look at potentially great up and comers like Blomkamp or Jones, or even the current crop of guys like Snyder, Del Toro, Nolan, Abrams, hell even Jon Favreau. Now none of these guys (well, maybe Nolan) are in Spielberg's league when he was at his best; in fact, guys like JJ Abrams and Zach Snyder aren't very good at all. But they DO seem to have their finger on the pulse of the zeitgeist the way The Berg had in his heyday. Not to mention massive competition from titans like Jackson and Cameron, who seem to be way ahead of Spielberg in providing epic, ground-breaking entertainment as well - when was the last time Spielberg was involved in something as exciting as the Rings/Hobbit movies or Avatar, for instance? I would love Spielberg to get his second wind and return to his 70's, 80's and 90's form, but it will take more inspired material than a couple of re-makes and third-rate Indy sequels to do so.

This is a sign of the times. You're seeing more and more that big directors like Steven S. are getting told to FUCK OFF. First it was TINTIN, when the studio told SS where to shove it and said "Fuck you, nobody wants to see TINTIN."Remember how a few months ago the 'net was WILD with talk about how TINTIN was being filmed already and was in production? Now, you're not hearing a PEEP about it. Why? It died. Now THIS is a dead project, too. This is seriously good news.

    All this talk about remakes

    by mandrakeroot

It's bullshit isn't it? That just about every movie we get these days is a remake or sequel. I just watched the Taking of Pelham 123 remake, and maybe if it was an original movie it might have been at least OK/entertaining, but with the original to compare it to, it was just plain bad. They took everything about the original and just mad it worse...who the fuck cast Travolta in Robert Shaws role? Why change that character? What a huge mistake.

I know a lot of folks on here have been negative towards Cameron's Avatar, but either way I think we should all be glad and grateful that at least one director is willing put all of his time and effort for many years just to bring us something original, and actually create a new cinematic world. Even if Avatar disappoints (doubtful), Cameron still deserves to be applauded.

Empire of the Sun The Color Purple The Indiana Jones Trilogy Schindlers List Jurassic Park Amistad Munich Catch Me if You Can War of the Worlds Minority Report A.I. Now you may disagree about one or all as being classics(though most intelligent people can recognise his undeniable talent.) but can any hating asshole here think of any other director who comes close in terms of quality and output. You can perhaps throw Scorcese and Ridley Scott into the mix, yet even these two masters have made some shit. I guess what I'm trying to say is if you call Spielberg a hack then you don't know film. Aside from the promising and rousing opening warehouse sequence, I hated INDY 4.

Spielberg can now concentrate his vision on bringing his LINCOLN biopic to the screen, starring Liam Neeson. As long as the Gettysburg address is a major sequence, my ticket is as good as bought.
