How Tough Is Hollywood?? Sometimes Even Will Smith And Steven Spielberg Can't Get A Project Going...
Merrick here...
Will Smith and Setven Spielberg's OLDBOY project has gone belly-up, according to Latino Review. The film was being spun as a direct adaptation of Nobuaki Minegishi and Garon Tsuchiya's manga as opposed to a "remake" of Park Chan-wook's 2003 feature film.
According to a trusted source…
…It’s DEAD!
Mandate and DreamWorks didn’t see eye to eye therefore DreamWorks has apparently walked away.
No Spielberg.
No Will Smith.
THEY’RE OUT!
Hence no stateside Oldboy remake…or whatever you want to call it.
...says LR HERE.
The 2003 film is available in various permutations HERE
, and it's also rentable via Netflix (disc and streaming) HERE.
The source material has been amassed into a series of graphic novels which can be found HERE

havent seen oldboy heard its very good.
-
we don't NEED to remake everything that comes down the pike in America-vision. I like watching movies in other languages showing other cultures. I'm crazy like that.
-
If they like the movie so much why don't they spend that $$$$ marketing the original in the states..
-
I mean, really? These two can't come up with something more original?
-
...to American audiences. It's probably for the best.
-
Smith would have wore a pair of converse and probably sang bob marley during his imprisonment fuck him right in his talentless hack saggy arsehole. Its the best news for me since MJ died
-
they would have probably made the sister a stepsister because there's nuttin wrong with doin her. :P
-
to see whether they would fuck this up OR go a completely different route than they are accustomed to and actually make this as brutal as the Korean adaptation.
-
True that.
-
Some of the best news we've gotten in a long time.
-
Best news I've heard here in a long goddamned time.
-
Wasn't it his daughter? I swear it was..
Anyway, Spielberg shouldn't be allowed anywhere near a movie like this. Only a filmmaker with balls could remake this, assuming anyone could. And I don't know at what capacity Will Smith would have been involved, but couldn't they have used some imagination and cast Jackie Chan in the lead-roll? They could have sold it to Disney -
No joke, I wrote and hit "post talkback" before seeing yours...
-
I would love to live in a universe where Disney would release a movie like Oldboy.
-
yep.
-
...that they even tried this shit. It's a classic film under ten years old- what could a remake possibly add, other than a box-jellyfish?
-
I'm thinking of The Empire Strikes Back.
-
So the Spielberg/Smith bloat has been relieved from this movie. Thank God. Listen up, Hollywood! A movie like this doesn't HAVE to cost $50 million before a single frame of film is shot due to ridiculous salary demands from stars both in front and behind the camera. A remake of Oldboy should be made for less than Will Smith's salary alone... And with a better actor.
-
Oldboy movie was sick and twisted, but boy, was it a kick in teeth - best revenge ever!!
-
Both Steven and Will are not so great at anything they do these days.
-
you are quite mad!!
-
Wolfman poster.
-
Because you know Harry would've done a GI Joe on this piece of shit - "oh, maybe it's not so bad, I dunno you guys, I dunno, what do you think WOW THIS PIECE OF SHIT IS GRRREATTT!" And then he ends up being the Netflix pull quote.
-
Remeber when spielberg made great movies? Me neither
-
It's alright, I'm always thinking about that movie
-
By most of the American audience. If they aren't aware of the original, they need not to know about it. I had trouble getting through it. And I watch everything.
-
Dae Su (the protagonist) fucked his daughter. Woojin (antagonist) fucked his sister.
-
this is the best news I've heard all year.
-
If they're gonna remake a Chan-Wook revenge movie it'd probably be easiest to do revenge for lady vengeance.

Spielberg is being treated like Hitchcock was
by u_banned_me_down_the_stairs
It's really sad if you ask me. This man has delivered time and time again. his mother and father are still alive he has those genes, he will be with us for a long time. Stop denying him. It's wrong. It's just plain wrong. I get sick to my gut when i think about the films hitch didn't get to make as a wise more seasoned director because the studio thought he was an old fossil. Stop doing this. There are remakes that suck, just plain out suck, and then there are remakes that deserve to be, Steve isn't a hack. I'm sure his version might have been interesting. Dreamworks can go fuck themselves if they keep this shit up!
-
that movie was too much of a mind fuck to be enjoyable anyway
-
99% of all those remakes / reboots we see today is WORSE than the originals. So I say "THANK GOD" they are not touching Old Boy. There's no point in remaking a perfect movie.
-
I was really going to do it if he touched Oldboy. Now we just need to stop the american "let the right one in" from happening.
-
GOOD NEWS!!!!!!!!
-
The bad guy did his sister and forced the hero to do his own daughter. I guess everyone's right.
-
Period.
-
the Let the Right One In remake and all shall be well.
-
I didn't even see your post there.
-
My guess is that spielbergo and Big Willie were going to capitalize on the basic concept. Man imprisoned for 15 years, doesn't know why, goes out for revenge has to solve the mystery over any incestual content. The manga is straightforward like that, no incest, but a premise does not a movie make but it would have been interesting to compare the two films for posterity's sake. BTW, AICN, what's the story with Terminator franchise going on auction block. Did they really lose that much on Salvation. Looks like Halcyon films lost their gamble when they bought the franchise or maybe they wanted to "flip" it all along and make a profit just by selling the rights.
-
...a remake of SET THE RIGHT ONE IN.Smith will make it 'fresh.'
-
Will: "Aww hail naw!"
Antagonist: "Aww hail yes." -
You're living in it now. One word: Kids.
-
I guess that worked out well for us all.
-
I've been done with Will Smith since Wild Wild West. MIB 2 sealed it.
-
that we thought this idea sucked balls anyway. C'mon, Spielberg, just pull a romanticized WWII movie from the pocket. Will Smith, fight MORE aliens. More aliens, man.
-
they would have just fucked up one more foreign masterpiece.and you know what? Will Smith is a star, not a fucking actor.the guy cant act,he is good with his 'AH HELL NAW' roles, but with a bit more challenging roles/movies,he would be a mediocrity at its best.ALI proves that.
so fuck this project, and fuck that greedy jewish bastard Spielberg.he once was indeed the god of movie industry, but now he is just a capitalist commercializing every kind of art, just to make his pockets heavier.fuck him. -
GIANT COWBOY ALIEN NAZIS...A film by Steven Spielberg...Summer 2010.
-
I know everyone can hardly wait.
-
I was hoping by the title that they were cancelling Indy 5...
-
Yeah, that's not a bad point, but still, Kids was released under the Miramax banner, not Disney directly... plus, sick as Kids is, Oldboy is even worse. BTW, that Larry Clark really is fucked in the head. Djou ever see his "Teenage Caveman" DTV movie? It's an update of the old horror film, which is fine... except for the 15-minute break, right in the middle of the story, where we get to watch the teens taking drugs and having sex. For no other reason, far as I can tell, than to allow Larry Clark to stage and film that sequence.
-
Ryan Kwanten:
http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0477127/ -
but i guess everything is excused if you are an 'artist' btw what happened with that pederast Polanski? they finally releashed him, since he filmed chinatown and rosemarys baby? just asking
-
...needs a recall.
-
The Departed.
-
Now just go and watch the korean version.
-
Spielberg is so clueless at this point its vaguely terrifying. I think he has Alzheimer's...
-
Smith would have destroyed it like he does with every property he gets his rewriting hands on!!!!
-
I don't think there's any great reason to Americanize this movie. The original is more than sufficient.
-
At first I thought you were making a bad joke about the LTROI remake... then I Googled it.That is the SINGLE MOST fucked up idea for a movie remake ever. The original, apart from being a flat-out brilliant addition to the vampire genre, was the most disturbing movie I've seen since "Henry: Portrait Of A Serial Killer". Remaking it would be like doing an Etch-O-Sketch of the Mona Lisa. Utterly retarded.I know. Let's form a mob like the one in the ORIGINAL "Frankenstein", light our torches, descend upon Hollywood, and burn it to the ground. This dearth of ideas bullshit has gotta stop.
-
Maybe then the poor bastard can get some films made again after making that craptacular INDIANA JONES AND THE KINGDOM OF THE X-FILES flick.
-
You know who you are. Just like stewie griffin u beat your meat to shya lebuff haha :)
-
Stop stealing movie news from the Zone!
-
so the american remake has a significant chance to be better than the original.
-
As opposed to people like you that beat their meat to TWILIGHT? HAH. :)
-
I don't understand the love for this film. I had a copy of Oldboy for about 3 years before I finally broke down and watched it. It was boring as fuck, and pretty much idiotic. Yeah the twist was fucked up but still, it isn't as good as people claimed/claim it to be. Why remake it. I really feel people want to like Korean Cinema so much, they will slob over the most ok film, just because. Oldboy = Overrated.
-
Who would pay to see that?
-
Most overated Hollywood actor in cinematic history.
-
Died years ago. how else does one explain every single fucking movie under the sun getting remade? Some movies are ripe for remakes and can actually benefit from a modenr retelling. Some, not ALL. Hollywood seems to think that modern visual effects and whatever else will make remakes better. WRONG. Red Dawn, a great movie and one that does not need to be remade. The subject matter was relavent at the time, thinking Russia could invade the US was plausible at the time. Now for the remake the bad guys are who? China? Lame, i'm sorry but the whole idea is lame and a disgrace to the memory of Patrick Swayze. Oh another one, Arthur. I don't know if it is still a live project, but last I heard that idiot Russell Brand was going to star in it????WTF??? No one, I mean NO ONE can replace nor duplicate Dudley Moore's classic comedic performance, especially not this tool Brand. Also, the story does not in any way benefit from a modernized retelling.I could go on and on, the bottom line is Hollywood is lazy, has been for a long time. Only once in a while are we treated to something really special, like The Dark Knight or Iron Man. If the movie going public were not dumb sheep, they would demand better for their movie going dollar, but they are dumb so they won't demand better. Sad, so very sad.
-
Spielberg's version... but not with Will Smith in the film. I can appreciate him challenging himself with dramatic roles but he needs to prove he's got what it takes with smaller stuff first. He's still got a long way to go...
-
To me is erratic as an actor, he can be awesome (in Ali and Pursuit of Happiness) to kinda dullish (Wild Wild West, he sleptwalked through that turd). Most of the time I find him good to very good. But regardless of what I or anyone else thinks, he has something that is almost as important as acting skills, charisma. That can get you just as far as good acting can and in some cases, you can make a living from it, look at Arnie, made a whole career out of his charisma, never was a great actor, even he admitted that. Smith is definitely a better actor than Arnie, but the guy has something people just like, like him or not.
-
It's not like anyone praises him as some wonderful actor or anything. He's pretty much an action star, and he's certainly more convincing than most action stars. Occasionally he delivers a better-than-average performance along the way (I Am Legend).
-
Ask anyone who remembers, I was pretty rough on this "girl" named Dancingforever who loved it and was crying because she thought it was an age issue that she liked twilight and most of the people on that talkback didn't. To which I pointed out "she" and I were probably the same age and I thought twilight was head-scratchingly awful. And btw my last post is aimed at a certain person who called me out for no reason and showed no hint of it being a joke, so I put two of their fave recent topics (incest porn and stewie dreaming of shya lebuff) together in a little playful jab. Unless you're that same person or you like those two topics, hey whatever bakes your cake. ;)
-
DON'T FUCKING DO IT!
-
WHAT THE FUCK HAPPENED?
-
Nov 10, 2009 3:58:59 PM CST
unlike most here, i like both Smith and the 'Berg...
by jackknifed_juggernaut
but an Oldboy remake was neither asked for nor needed by anyone. now, can we PLEASE do something about the blasphemous Let the Right One In remake? if a cunt is unwilling to read a damned subtitle, they don't deserve the story. it's really quite simple.
-
Remakes suck.
-
The best news I've heard (or read) all day.Old Boy is such a great film, I really wouldn't want them to Americanize it (yes I'm an American). If they ever do remake it I hope they'd keep the same story, plot twists, etc.
-
No biggee! Didn't you see the HAH :) And, my oven bakes my cakes!
-
Soap McTavish's head, muhahahahahahah. I don't even care for it I just wanna play with the Night Vision goggles.
-
Now the GHOST IN THE SHELL remake from formerly talented TRANSFORMERS producer and KINGDOM OF THE CRYSTAL SKULL director Spielberg needs to meet a similar fate.
-
Some people however can't take a joke, that's why I put a ;) in both my first 2 posts. You don't play modern warfare by any chance do you? ;)
-
I didnt need to see this. Park got it right the 1st time.
Just let it go hollywood....just let it go. -
So it wouldnt have been in the Bergs movie. I believe Park added that stuff in?
-
If TBers of AICN is anything to go by, they made the right call on this project. No love for this idea here, and I have no problem admitting that I agree. Will Smith? Trash!
-
realized how much Will Smith sucks. "Ah hell naw, now I KNOW you didn't just imprison me for 15 years!"
-
Fuck me, that was a once in a lifetime thing.
I normally couldn't give a shit about fx, and the movie is INSANELY stupid. But its 6 blockbusters for the price of 1. Audience loved it, clapped 4 times during the movie, and rounds of applause at the end. Must be seen on big screen. F/X deserve the Oscar now. -
That is all.
-
People claiming he doesn't really need to fess up. He was good in Ali, good in I Am Legend (dumb movie, but good job acting) and 7 Pounds was some of his best acting work to date. As I stated earlier, I am glad they aren't doing this film cause quite frankly I thought the original film wasn't that good. For those who do like Oldboy, why do you like it so much. What was it about the film that you find so thrilling and or engaging. I found myself struggling to finish it.
-
Big applause at the end? So, you're saying Cusack lives and we all live happily ever after? I knew it.
And yeah, Will Smith CAN act. It's just no one can see him pulling off something like this. And if you're going to water something down, what is the point? -
given the incest driven plot, what movie studio would touch this? its not exactly a film you can easily market will smith in.... its hardly the pursuit of happyness.
-
Watched it and thought, is that it? Octopus is a bi gross, and that corridor fight is quite cool, but Ive sene better stuff in better movies. SO meh.
-
Undefeatable or whatever it's called. Now THAT'S one Hell of a fight...
-
I didn't want Will Smith to say "Awwe HELLLL NNOOOOOO, you can't be my baby girl, I just tapped your ass, HELLLL NOOOOO!!!"
-
Whoever said no obviously saw Crystal Skull and said HELL-to the-NO!! 80's Spielberg would have had no problems getting this made.
-
Steve, Steve, What the fuck happened to you, man? Do us all a favor and retire already. You've got nothing left to prove, and all you're doing is tarnishing your legacy. Just. Stop.
-
Glad to hear this won't be tarnishing the good name of the current 'OLDBOY' movie in any way now.I just hope they don't join forces for that proposed 'HARVEY' re-make instead. That's another property that's just fine as it is.Move onto some original concepts guys, please....
-
I like Smith and Spielberg quite a lot to be fair, but Oldboy is untouchable, and should remain that way. Crisis averted. Especially considering what they had planned.
-
I wanted an all-american 'Ford-alike' for the live-action series...not a wooden Aussie!I'm fearing for the TV series already....
-
Australia is where actors who are supposed to play ALL-Americanlike characters come from. Hell, even their cities play All- American cities..See Superman Returns, Wolverine, and countless others.
-
of Will Smith fucking his own daughter would never fly in this country. The whole "word of mouth" would ruin this movie before it's completion. "Hey guess what? Will Smith is doing a remake of that movie OLDBOY." "You mean the one where one dude fucks his sister and the other one fucks his daughter." AH HELLL NAAAW, indeed. Will should get prison fucked for letting his ten-year-old do Karate Kid. And why the fuck does it still say The Karate Kid on the Sony site? What happened to the KUNG-FU name change?
-
NO MATTER WHAT THE FUCK THIS OLDBOY FLICK WILL BE ABOUT.
-
I liked I am Legend, and Happyness was good, and I liked him in 7 pounds.
-
I wouldn't mind a remake but Spielberg and Smith? Pass the crack.
-
Is he still alive?
-
WOOOOOHOOOOOO!!!!!!! *boogies*
-
Good. No need for that project to even exist.
-
who's stealing from the Korean man down because he hates the Jews. You get that right?
-
Give it to the Mexicans.
-
Now if they can just kill the Akira remake...
-
Another unnecessary remake.Spielberg is having a rough time of it lately - he struggled to get financing for Tintin, and now this. Could just be the current economic climate; could be indicative of something deeper. Spielberg is not the force he once was; he just isn't that special anymore. And that brings me no satisfaction to say. But I really think he's lost his audience. His name or upcoming projects don't instill the excitement that they used to. Indy 4 was utter garbage (it actually gets worse the more you watch it), and to have a three year gap between it and Munich, and then three years between that and his next project, Tintin, is troubling. He's still probably the biggest name in the film industry, but he seems to be being slowly, but surely, passed by - certainly when it comes to the domain of genre movies and blockbusters. Look at potentially great up and comers like Blomkamp or Jones, or even the current crop of guys like Snyder, Del Toro, Nolan, Abrams, hell even Jon Favreau. Now none of these guys (well, maybe Nolan) are in Spielberg's league when he was at his best; in fact, guys like JJ Abrams and Zach Snyder aren't very good at all. But they DO seem to have their finger on the pulse of the zeitgeist the way The Berg had in his heyday. Not to mention massive competition from titans like Jackson and Cameron, who seem to be way ahead of Spielberg in providing epic, ground-breaking entertainment as well - when was the last time Spielberg was involved in something as exciting as the Rings/Hobbit movies or Avatar, for instance? I would love Spielberg to get his second wind and return to his 70's, 80's and 90's form, but it will take more inspired material than a couple of re-makes and third-rate Indy sequels to do so.
-
Having a hard time coming up with ORIGINAL scripts? How about dusting off those project you LOVED, signed actors/directors for and then REWROTE a Dozen times and as a result the finished film was NOTHING like the original -'cept maybe the title and character names.....
-
Spielberg has been desperate for a hit these days.
-
The bastard version of my personal all-time favorite film is DEAD!!!!!
DEAD AS DISCO!!!!
Thank you Gods of Hollywood... you really ARE still up there.
-
OldDae-su Ohboy is one of my favorite movies, a Will smith staring Old boy remake would have blown BALLS! If your gonna remake the thing, then Benicio Del Toro should play Dae-su Oh, Christian Bale(Obviously) as Woo-jin Lee, and Philip Seymore Hoffman as Dae-su Oh chubby slobbish internet cafe buddy:P
-
looks exactly like Charles Bronson in some shots in Oldboy?
-
Oldboy is fine the way it is, in the form that it is. There is justice in the world after all.
-
My night has suddenly gotten better! :)
-
Otherwise we'll sick 'TAINTLICK' on you…
-
is just ok,he's better than Billy Baldwin, I can say that for sure but he just doesnt have the chops for anything too real. He is such a personality that its impossible for him to become lost in a role and thats a major problem with a lot of young actors today.
-
This is a sign of the times. You're seeing more and more that big directors like Steven S. are getting told to FUCK OFF. First it was TINTIN, when the studio told SS where to shove it and said "Fuck you, nobody wants to see TINTIN."Remember how a few months ago the 'net was WILD with talk about how TINTIN was being filmed already and was in production? Now, you're not hearing a PEEP about it. Why? It died. Now THIS is a dead project, too. This is seriously good news.

or at least jonah "apatow's fat bottom bow" hill's involvement from the movie.
-
especially if we get "munich" mode spieldberg. starring liam neeson as oldboy
-
"Lincoln" and "Interstellar" off the ground. But probably not, intelligent sci-fi and serious biopics are tough sells in this economy.
-
Thanks to the economy and risk-avoiding studios, every single movie in 2011 will be either a retarded CGI action-fest or a dumbass low-brow comedy.
-
It's bullshit isn't it? That just about every movie we get these days is a remake or sequel. I just watched the Taking of Pelham 123 remake, and maybe if it was an original movie it might have been at least OK/entertaining, but with the original to compare it to, it was just plain bad. They took everything about the original and just mad it worse...who the fuck cast Travolta in Robert Shaws role? Why change that character? What a huge mistake.
I know a lot of folks on here have been negative towards Cameron's Avatar, but either way I think we should all be glad and grateful that at least one director is willing put all of his time and effort for many years just to bring us something original, and actually create a new cinematic world. Even if Avatar disappoints (doubtful), Cameron still deserves to be applauded. -
They're not remaking one of my favorite films ever made. This is great news.
-
From the moment i heard these two were involved, i imagined a total perversion of the truly perfect original. Entertaining as fuck, yet so incredibly disturbing that they wouldve never been willing to touch the original ending. Still quite concerned about the possibility of a Battle Royale remake, but this is a good sign. First cool news in a while.
-

As somone on this site who actually likes Smith & Spielberg
by bass ackwards
Even I can say thank god! There is zero chance they would have done this project justice. I don't think Oldboy is the greatest movie in the world, though it definitely has it's cool as fuck moments, but there's is absolutely nothing to be added to it by a Hollywood adaptation.
-
to be with you, again!
-
Can you imagine if Hollywood studios made BATTLE ROYALE? A bunch of 30-year-olds parading around pretending to be highschoolers, Robert Pattison as the lead villain. Wow, fuck you Hollywood. We know your shit sucks before you even make it.
-
...and let the guy make like 7 quality, original films for the price that Hollywood would have put up for a shitty remake.
Best mercy killing of a film in 2009. -
Give me the damn Liam Neeson LINCOLN movie!! NOW!! C'Mon Spielberg!
-

Good ridance to that project which had FAIL writen all over it
by asimovlives
Good to know that now there will be only one movie called OLDBOY and nobody will make the mistake and to soil the good name of the former with a Hollywood abomination.Hollywood Oldoy is terminated? GOOD! Best news i got all week.

Can't believe I'm in the Minority to like Spielberg
by nomoredirtyjokespleaseweareyanks
Indy 4 was flat but come on guys(and girl) this legend of cinema made many of the greatest films of the last 30 years. Jaws Close Encounters E.T. Empire of the Sun The Color Purple The Indiana Jones Trilogy Schindlers List Jurassic Park Amistad Munich Catch Me if You Can War of the Worlds Minority Report A.I. Now you may disagree about one or all as being classics(though most intelligent people can recognise his undeniable talent.) but can any hating asshole here think of any other director who comes close in terms of quality and output. You can perhaps throw Scorcese and Ridley Scott into the mix, yet even these two masters have made some shit. I guess what I'm trying to say is if you call Spielberg a hack then you don't know film. Look at that fuckin list and shut the fuck up... Fuckin kids today huh?

You know it'll have a couple of goats prominently featured "one for the gals" it's called.
-
average film....Great fucking old school war movie.
-
He's as badass as Justin Timberlake.
You needed a guy that conveys badassary when the guy beats the shit of everybody on his own in the corridor. Hopefully Viggo Mortensen and David Cronenberg can do this. -
Must be his Eastern-European equivalent.
-
the sentimentality of Spielberg and the crowd pleasing antics of Smith meant this was always going to be a cringe inducing experience.
-
Spielburger hasn't been good since Minority Report. (Munich was barely OK.)Fuck him for allowing garbage like Bayformers 2 to be made.Ain't he Old News.
-
Spielbergs dreaming if he can top that
-
Some of you guys are nuts for ripping on Spielberg. The guy has created some of the most memorable movie magic moments in cinema history, although I'll concede that his last few efforts were less than stellar.
Aside from the promising and rousing opening warehouse sequence, I hated INDY 4.
Spielberg can now concentrate his vision on bringing his LINCOLN biopic to the screen, starring Liam Neeson. As long as the Gettysburg address is a major sequence, my ticket is as good as bought. -
As long as they stick to the movie and not the manga
-
I must agree though that this is one to be left alone, like Amelie, Kung Fu Hustle or City of God.
Some things are best left as they are. For example, I thought Casablanca shouldn't be remade. Then when I watched the DVD I saw they tried not once, but twice to make a TV series out of it!
Some things are best left alone! -
Awwww, HELL nahhhh!!!
-
Jesus fucking christ!!!!
-
I would like to personally thank all the men and women serving in our Armed Force, past and present, for their service to our country. It is VERY MUCH APPRECIATED!
-
Looks like Hollywood has at least one brain cell still slightly flickering. Best news in film I've heard this decade...
-
too bad the same thing didn't happen to Transofrmers 2, Watchemen and Wolverine when they were in pre production. Flavor of the month Will Smith and Mr. I have to end every film on a happy bullshit note spielberg only would have fucked up Oldboy--leave it alone assholes!!!!!
