‘I Wish That Was All He Was Doing!!’ Henchman 21 Takes Center Stage In Sunday’s VENTURE BROS. 4.4!!

Published at:  Nov 08, 2009 5:21:34 PM CST

SPOILER ALERT !!

I am – Hercules!!

A reader writes:

O Mighty Hercules:

Why no talkback for THE VENTURE BROS.? It airs out of primetime so it never gets mentioned in your ratings stories the way CURB, DEXTER, AMAZING RACE and DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES etc etc etc do!

Fair enough! “Venture” also remains one of the two funniest comedies airing!!

Last week’s 4.3, “Perchance To Dean,” saw Dean's mutant clone meet an overdue grisly end when he embraced one of Hatred’s exploding Lawn Rusties.

Tonight’s installment:

In the aftermath of the death of his best friend, Henchman 21 has rededicated his life to become the most feared and skilled of all of the Monarch’s Henchmen. But tonight, all bets are off as Henchman 21 begins the hunt for the murderer of Henchman 24. Alliances shift, secrets are revealed, and the Venture brothers are kidnapped. Again.

Titles of season four’s first six:

4.1 Blood of the Father, Heart of Steel
4.2 Handsome Ransom
4.3 Perchance to Dean
4.4 Return to Malice
4.5 The Revenge Society
4.6 Self-Medication

11:59 p.m. Sunday. Cartoon Network.

Doc and Jackson got a 16-episode season. But in order to maintain quality product, they didn't want to rush it, so they split it up into two half seasons. I don't mind personally, as it's totally worth the wait.

I like it when the generally-incompetent villains in the show rise to the occasion once in a while. It's a nice change of pace, and gives a little more flavor to the characters.

The brief Monarch/Underbheit match-off in season one ("Home Insecurity") was a good example of that.

Not trying to hate, seriously -- My taste normally lines up pretty well with Herc's...But is there a reason I don't think this is funny? Have I needed to be a fan from the start? Is there an inside joke? Need to be a stoner as with much of Adult Swim stuff? Just not sure but worried that I don't get it -- Tell me what I need to know so I can like this and feel on the pulse again.

Read a lot of comics, and yes, the continuity is key, so watch from the beginning. I asked this before, but did anyone else feel their heart break when Rusty did the "hard reboot" on HELPER rather than put him in therapy in the first ep of this season? Is no one else evolved enough to love a robot?

I just realized why it looked so familiar, I believe it is referencing when Morpheus in The Sandman killed the head of his son Orpheus. If that was intentional then Publick and Hammer have attained a new level of badassedness.

it helps to have watched from the beginning, it started off as a parody of johnny quest and a lot of other old animated shows, but it's evolved into its own show with its own mythology, thats one of the things that makes it so great. and for the record, I'm not a stoner, I was born in 89, and this is one of my favorite shows, if not my favorite.

. . . in spite of some very extreme changes. Hatred is a pretty weak replacement for Sampson though. Here's hoping they get some of the other regulars involved pronto. And BradP, I wouldn't say you have to watch it all from the very beginning, but w/ the shit going down now, you definitely have to check out quite a bit. Actually, its hard to imagine what I'd make of the show were I to finally discover it this season.

Last week's deformed Dean clone was so-so (although I had that reaction to a few last season that really grew on me) but this had me laughing a LOT.

I also like that they have pretty well balanced the incompetent trivial Monarch with the fact that this guy has murdered like 70 people since the series started -- tonight you really get to see what Sheila and Gary see in him (like her tirade last season about the Monarch being the "real thing") also I loved the confrontation with the moppets (and especially her feeding them scraps under the dinner table -- "they'll just beg")

Besides being Brock-less, leaving nearly EVERY fucking character voiced by Jackson or Doc, there's definitely something not gelling with this season. As for this week's episode, still soft but a little more on-target. Some dirty pillowtalk, and 21 goes a little batshit insane, and the ghost of 24 seems to be doin' some crazy whatchamahoozit.

Somehow at once both badass and yet still total geek. Reminds me of this friend I had who was a fat math nerd in middle school who loved star trek. Trek made him want to join the military but he was totally out of shape. I didn't think he'd ever make it, but he spent all of high school getting in shape and now he flies jets for the air force. And he married a gorgeous swede. true story. Cept now he's kind of an ass cuz he thinks he's better than everyone. Still, deep down inside he's totally still just a nerd. Anyway, what was I talking about? Oh yeah, for all the pop culture references what I love about VB is the way this insane superhero universe has these characters that are simultaneously absurd and believable.

Is Brock gone because the actor is gone or is it for story? Because Hatred was hilarious in small doses but is now annoying. Its still great but very weak compared to last season, i understand they are focussing on small groups of charcters at a time to flesh them out and its good to have continuity which most cartoons ignore but my favourite episodes are the ones that are completely mental and self contained. The House of Mummies part 2 (which will remain in my memory forever as I spent 10 minutes searching the internet for where the hell part 1 was and then pissed myself laughing when I realised) and the one with the 'Ignore me!' alien

    by chewtoy

It took a while for me to really get into it, but once I did it became one of my all time favorites. Part of it is the delivery... Some of the funniest jokes are completely undersold, and the pacing it uses for both the jokes and the episodes themselves can be unusual. Ultimately though, this show is the cartoon-equilivent replacement for my Arrested Development fix, with its incredibly smart "stupid" humor.

From the Comic-con stuff they said Brock was gone, but Patrick Warburton wasn't. They apparently were misleading us with respect to ep 1, although he hasn't been seen since. However, my understanding is Brock will be back eventually and Patrick Warburton is still on board, but I could have missed something.

This season along with all the others, starts off with plot and character development. The Captain Sunshine and last nights have been the best so far. I love 21's new role and how he's still a geek at heart but puts on the tough guy front in front of the other henchmen.

If they bring him back next week, we had the perfect amount of HATRED eps. If he stays longer, he'll overstay his welcome.

    Reply to Talkback

  • Obviously, the first Season 4 episode was just setup to temporarily take Brock off the board by joining SPHINX until it's time to move the Molotov/Blackhearts/Hunter storyline back to the front burner again. That's why you're getting stuff with Hank constantly wearing Brock's jacket (even to bed apparently) and ripping on Sgt. Hatred as a poor substitute for Brock.

Oh, and was anyone else weirded out with Rusty and Dr. Mrs. The Monarch casually chatting with one another. She wasn't even annoyed with his typical lame come-ons.

I hope they don't do some weird revelation or love triangle with Rusty and Dr. Girlfriend. Monarch's girl problems have been done to death. Monarch's funny comes from a mix of successes (Dr. Gf, Captain Sunshine, scaring the shit out of the moppets, etc) and failiures (anything involving Doctor Venture). If he's incompetent at all areas, he's just another bumbling cartoon villain.

Venture talkback...hells yeah. The first two episodes this season were amazing, last two have been good but not great. 21's workout partner had me laughing my ass off. Monarch scaring the shit out of the hated moppets was a welcome sight. Not much Orpheus or Brock, but the show has still been entertaining. Do hope to see Order of the Triad pretty soon.

    Reply to Talkback

  • ...or even if there's a THREE'S COMPANY-style misunderstanding that makes The Monarch think Rusty's hooking up with his wife. I mean, think about it...His arch-enemy (officially Guild-sanctioned or otherwise) that he obsesses over and apparently has disturbing sexual thoughts about mixed in with his huge jealousy issues over Dr. Girlfriend/Mrs. The Monarch's past relationships? That's a Monarch meltdown cranked all the way up to eleven right there.

They hinted at that during the Season two finale and it was pretty much DOA. I am curious about the head of 24 marking the Venture Bros off the list. I'm in the same boat man. And I've watched this since before it was a cult hit. I've seen every episode and I just don't find it that funny. I read a shit ton of comics and get the continuity. Maybe watching them on DVD would be better? Since the seasons are so far apart I watch too much shit inbetween and forget everything about. I enjoy it and will keep watching it, and their are a lot of older cartoon references in their I don't get. Its one of the few trendy cool things that people love that I don't hate for somereason. So I like that. I think because the creators seem to give the fans what they love and like so much I respect that about it. Where as other things people go nuts over that I don't like I just instantly hate for whatever reason. And I don't think smoking a lot of weed helps. Thats more for Xavier and Tom Goes To the Mayor.....which is why I like those shots a hundred times more then Venture. If I watch Venture while toked, it makes no sense and is boring.

The wild places the scriptwriters take this show on a weekly basis keeps me watching. by subtitles_off

Yeah, definitely. I only wish the mainstream would acquire this kind of taste. Or, maybe I don't. Really, nothing appeals to everyone anymore. This show is one of only two that consistently makes me laugh every episode.Last season, people began to complain there wasn't enough of the brothers in the show bearing their name. This year's episodes, so far, have been very Dean-and-Hank-centric. That's great! If you'd've asked me to enjoy a VENTURE BROTHERS without Brock Sampson, I would've told you that made about as much sense as a Batman comic without Bruce Wayne. I'm sure Brock's new adventures will be the subject of upcoming episodes, and they'll be hilarious, but, right now, I'm not missing him too much. There has never been a parody show that has developed into something so rich and full of character. It's in its fourth season, now, so of course it will be hard to "get into." Still, I think anyone who has ever appreciated a comic book or a Saturday morning cartoon would be happy they made the effort.

    Loving the boy's evolution

    by wandering_prophet

Considering they have just been fodder for 3 seasons (both comic and cannon) I like the take that they are becoming enjoyable characters in their own right, especially Hank. Hanks is only a few steps away from becomng a legitimately cool character. And let's not forget Dean in a Floyd hole. I miss Brock, but I know it's only temprorary, the show is obviously building on a serial plotline this season that will grow episode by episode, like Lost, but good.

I know I'm going to regret asking but if ...

    by dogrobber

... "“Venture” also remains one of the two funniest comedies airing!!" what is the other one (in Herc's opinion)?

[asking this question is a mistake. a terrible, terrible mistake.]

What was the deal with 24's Skull?

    by shabbyblue

At the end of the episode, were they hinting that 24's Skull might be possessed with his ghost? Perhaps there's hope to see 24 return afterall.

    24's Skull

    by inactionman

Reminds me of Sean Connery's skull in Highlander 2. Perhaps 24 returns for no apparent reason like Connery did in Highlander 2.

24 has to be resurrected in some fashion

    by spyguy

As funny as 21 is on his own, you can't beat the dynamic he had with 24. You know it, I know it and even The Monarch knows it.

The beginning with 21 laying the smackdown on Nessie & Champ? Awesome. Also, The Time Machine.

    That Theme Music

    by mockingbuddha

was Mars I think, by beethoven or someone. Plus: Why does no one want to talk about the murder of HELPER, probably only the most recent one. I mean killing the boys repeatedly is no big shakes, clones are creatures of God, and those are born and die all the time. But a robot sentience is a precious and sacred thing. For one it's manmade. Mankind finally outgrows himself by creating a potentially immortal consciousness, and then that sucker goes and wipes his memories like that... It's just so.. evil. Paid for by, TDVSBASVUC.

    hey Lockes, get Farked

    by brashhulk

    obvious troll is obvious.

Venture Bros. is one of the most insanely brilliant shows ever to be broadcast. Yes, it's insular. Yes, it's self-indulgent. Yes, it's often totally goofy. And so was a show called Monty Python's Flying Circus that just happened to be insane and brilliant.

In regards to the skull at the end of the episode...

Did no one else notice the hand that checked off 'The Ventures' from 21's list?

It checked off the list...THEN 21 enters the room. Hmmmmmmmmm. Curiouser and curiouser.

Brock's absence is explained in the first episode. You can watch it at adult swim and the plot is summarized by a couple people in the episode 1 talkback (there was one). It was summarized because parts of the episode were shown out of sequence in the actual episode AND CN apparemtly fucked up the early showing of the episode.

    DVR issues

    by rhinosaur

Have Verizon Fios and I'm glad I was watching it because it didn't record at all. I went to look at the episode description and it was describing an episode from last season. I have the DVR set to record only new shows, so maybe the program guide info was screwed up elsewhere, too.
