Scum looks at Telluride Film Festival including Woody Allen's latest and many more!

Published at:  Sep 06, 1999 10:53:26 PM CDT

Hey folks, it's Harry here... Having survived waaaaay too much partying with the 'Penis Bait Brigade' (Annette Kellerman, The Swinger, Corky Forrest, Matty Walker, Jessica Rabbit, G.I.Jane and the Good Girl) down on Sixth Street this Labor Day Weekend. It is my profound wish that all of you had as much fun as I did this weekend, with none of the recovery symptoms... (Total Body Soreness) Meanwhile it seems Scum spent a great weekend up at Telluride catching some winners on the silver screen. I'm dying to hear more about the Woody Allen film and GIRL ON THE BRIDGE! They really have a hook for me.

hello sir. sorry to bother you once again.

i just got back from the telluride film festival. i'll try to keep this
brief out of respect to you. i'm sure you've already recieved many reports
from telluride (and i bet they're all much better written than mine - but
then again, i suck). anyways i'll try and just stick to the highlights and
not mention everything i saw, because i'm sure that will bore you silly.

THE STRAIGHT STORY

david lynch's "the straight story" was alot of fun. just a nice, simple
movie told smartly and letting the images speak whereas a lesser film would
try to hit you over the head with stuff. richard farnsworth was remarkable
here. sissy spacek was very believable in her role. and i don't wish to
give anything away about the cameo appearance of a great indie actor playing
the brother of richard farnsworth; but i will say, he was great in his small
role. good movie here. should get at least one academy award nomination
(for farnsworth).

PRINCESS MONONOKE

"princess mononoke" was well done (but a little long, but that's a minor
complaint). very reminiscient of "akira". i'm glad there are no singing
animals in this film (and they had plenty of opportunities here).

JESUS'S SON

"jesus's son" by allison mcclean was enjoyable because of billy crudup's
performance; otherwise this film was a lesser, americanzied take on
"trainspotting".

BLACK AND WHITE

james toback's "black and white" was an ambitious look at the hip-hop scene
and many famous folk had parts in it: brooke shields, wu tang clan, mike
tyson, robert downey, jr., ben stiller, claudia schiffer, elijah wood, and
joe pantaliano. this movie was kinda unfocused, but still funny. i wasn't a
big fan of james toback's earlier film "two girls and a guy". so maybe i'm
not the right guy to talk about this. however, it is pretty funny to watch
robert downey, jr. try to pick up mike tyson.

WOODY ALLEN'S SWEET AND LOWDOWN

woody allen's "sweet and lowdown" starring sean penn was a surprise tba at
the festival. it was a cute take on a fictional jazz guitarist's time at the
near top of his profession. nothing exceptional here 'cept a great
performance by sean penn and samantha morton (who's also great in the above
mentioned "jesus's son"). this movie was fun - not great, but fun.

GIRL ON A BRIDGE

i also really enjoyed patrice leconte's "girl on a bridge". this is about a
knife-thrower who recruits the girls he throws at by hanging out at bridges
and stopping female suicide victims from jumping. this is a charming romance
with hint of tragedy (i'm not giving anything away). anyways, it has a very
similar feel to his earlier "the hairdresser's husband".

i could go on and talk to you about my own personal experiences at telluride
and tell you how much fun i had. but remember, i am scum and i suck; so i'm
sure anything i would mention would just be a waste of your time to read.

thank you so much for reading this much of it (if you even got this far).

sincerely,

scum

    Well, huhn!

    by kieran

Well that was entertaining, wasn't it? I think we can all guess what kind of night clubs 'scum' goes to! But really Harry; encouraging people to send you insider reports when it's all just a part of their dominant/submissive fantasy life? Schocked. Shocked and stunned.

    drop the act scum

Your little "hi, I'm so self-conscious it hurts to breathe" act is getting old. We all know you can't write for shit; just deal with it and try to improve yourself however you can. You really embarrass yourself with the "I suck" and "if you even read this far" bits, ok?

    woody allen jazz movie

    by gyalwa

Did Woody Allen talk about a jazz movie in Stardust Memories? The music is going to be great - Woody's got excellent taste. Some of his later films may be somewhat lacking in comparison to his earlier work, but they still manage to rise above most other films out there. If any had been released by an unknown people would be shouting in the streets about it. Too many people take Woody for granted. Anyone have info on the release date?

    Woody Allen's new film

    by alexfinch_2000

I don't know why everyone expects Woody to produce 'classic' after 'classic' movie. Sometimes a director just wants to make a small personal movie and if it's not up to the best of their work then they almost get harshly criticised and accused of 'not being as good as the early ones'. Allen's produced some of the best romantic comedies in the 90's - a genre normally populated by absolute trash starring Julia Roberts - so I think people should give him a bit of space to do whatever he wants too. Oh, and while I'm here, can I just plug my new web page 'Garbled Communications' which covers tv, film and music and is rather fine. It's at: http://www.geocities.com/sunsetstrip/show/1322/ .Thanks for listening. AF

mike tyson as the punk rapist

    by angel

toback is such a fraud. hangs out and worships 'real men' who rape and beat their women like tyson and jim brown. if he doesn't drown in his talentless testosterone, maybe he'll make a good movie--which he hasn't.
