    by dawson's crack

I happened to come across the trailer on ET before I saw this posting, and I have to say, it looked like shite! I was actually considering seeing the screening at the upcoming Toronto Film Festival, but there is no way I'm going to spend my money on a movie where there was not even a SINGLE laugh on a two minute trailer. Not one. Not even a chuckle. Not even when Chris Rock was saying stuff. Kevin Smith is nothing more than a glorified amateur filmmaker.

    by dark magus

Interesting trailer. Surprising that conservative little ET would have the guts to play something this "controversial." The only reason they did play it was because Matt and Ben are in it. No word of Kevin Smith or a shot of the controversial Alanis Morrisette in the controversial role of God. And how could someone just say "Wow, nice cast" after that? Come on!

THEORY OF WHY "DOGMA" WILL TANK

    by cathfilm

    Simple logic:

    1st, Clerks (odd #) BOFFO
    2nd, Mallrats (even #) ZIPPO
3rd, Chasing Amy (odd #) BOFFO
    4th, Dogma (even #)...?...

Even/odd # formula works for Star Trek, why wouldn't it work here?

    I'll see the movie BUT

    by whitey

I don't think its prognosis is good. Look, Smith is a talented writer but none of his films have done all that well (incl. Chasing Amy). And sure as shit American audiences aren't going to see ANY film that even remotely touches upon religion. They WANT to see mindless crap most of the time; films that in any way provoke or demand deep thought usually tank. The controversy will help it open big but that's it. Like Eyes Wide Shut, it'll have its weekend and pre-release hype and then off into the sunset it will ride. This is just plain harsh reality, I am afraid. No reflection on the quality of the film. Hang in there, Kevin Smith. You'll hit paydirt when you finally make a comic book movie (probably be his worst film, too).

    titties

    by dawson's crack

Yes, salma hayek does her mandatory de rigeur naked shiny pink bikini girlie dance, don't you worry. What kind of Salma Hayek appearance would it be without a shot of her titties jiggling? But this time she's an angel! Neato! And is she complaining about the kinds of roles she gets? I would like to know what was implied by my not understanding the dialogue. Were you saying I am an idiot who cannot understand the english language, or that I need to hear the context of the words spoken? So you're telling me there is not one single funny line on it's own, or gesture, or anything? How could that be, if this movie is supposed to be a comedy?

Can you try to make some sense? I doubt that anyone did understand a word of what you were trying to say. Why don't you wait until you see the film before you comment on it? Oh, and leave your personal beliefs at the theater's door before you see it, it's only a movie after all.

    by mini maul

    1) Cathfilm is clueless. 2) A compairson of Kevin Smith's films to Paramonts Star Trek franchise is moronic. 3) Clerks kicked ass. 4)Mallrats was very good in its slapstick kinda way. (Just reviewed the new DVD.) 5) Chasing Amy is a Classic! 6) Dogma has the Catholic church's panties in a tight knot right up the wazoo! 7) Cathfilm is clueless.

Smith is God, or Bob, as the situation..

    by kentucky colonel

    Kevin Smith, you rule.

"Clerks", I keep an audiotape copy in my car to listen to on road trips. "Mallrats"....Zany! "Chasing Amy", that one hit kinda close to home (in a very very roundabout way). That scene where Ben breaks down in the truck and she walks off in the rain?!? Fuckin' tore my heart out. Been there, Brother! Anyway, Kevin, if you should happen to read this, know that you've moved the Colonel to tears....of laughter and otherwise. SALUTE!

And for all of those who insist the odd number Trek films are shit, I'd ask you to watch ST3-The Search For Spock again. OK, Christopher Lloyd playing a Klingon is a pretty bad casting call, but all the warmth and humor of 2,4,6 (& First Contact) are there. Wouldn't Samuel L Jackson made one (in "his" words) a "Bad Ass Muthafucka" Klingon? Anybody but Chris Lloyd!! But don't condemn the whole for the parts. ST:TMP was so-so and V sucked HARD, no doubt (Generations-so so. Insurrection- sucked!)

DOGMA-I'll be there opening day. Like many others, I've been waiting and hoping for this for some time. Silent Bob, you're a rude motherfucker but you're cute as hell! Screw ET and their ass-kissing. You'd never have seen that trailer on ET if the film starred Joe Nobody And Billy Yesterday. All ET does is kiss ass and everybody knows it (oh Ye of Paramount lineage). This movie won't break any attendance records (or so sez my Magic 8 Ball) but since when has that meant anything about the actual movie? IRON GIANT hasn't broken $20 Large yet, and it's the SHIT-ALL-GET-OUT best flick this summer, hands down. Kevin, again, thank you for making some balls-out movies. Some of us here on the fringe live for cats like you and the things you create and give life to.

PS-I could never reach. I guess we all get a little curious...

dogma will suck donckey big time....OR HOW THE WORLD WILL SEE KE

    by 20th century fox

Dogma will suck donkey and some sever ass for these reasons
    1. Kevin Smith is qa crappy filmmaker who owns his ENTIRE carrer to Alan Dershowitz...Yes there I said again now many are wondering who is alan dershowitz and why does he have anything to do with KS well heres the story. When clerks recived an NC-17 rating Bob and Harvey Wientsien (Overrated Overlords of CRAPAMAX oopps I mean Mirimax) retained Alan Dershowitz to rep kevin smith against those (Supposedly) evil MPAA folk. Now Alan dershowits was a lawyer who defened OJ and President Clinton and Clous Von Bulow and other cases too numerous to mention. So lAlan Dershowitz went on every TV talk show he could find and wined bitched and moaned (all at his hourly rate bweing paid for by Crapamax by the way) on how those evil MPAA folks were silencing a voice of a generation and how he felt it was a constitutional violation that no one could see CLERKS cause it was NC-17 so many nespapers picked up the story AFTER that and thus many went out to see what all the hub ub was about and found them selves swindled by a crass marketing capmaingn disgued as a cositiutional issue. Now Bob and harvey knowing that they cant pull that stunt again decided to lie about the catholic leage and say that there going to bomb theatres wich dogma is playing. wich i will tell you is an ABOSOLUTE LIE YES GEEKS BOB AND HARVEY WIENTSIEN KEVIN SMITH ARE LYING TO YOU WHEN THEY SAY THAT THE CATHOLIC LEAGE HAS THREATENED THEM WITH VIOLENCE its total bull shit. That letter they sent out to the catholic lege was a total maketing ploy yes so when I hear a slacker bitch and moan about the how the catholic lege is going to have dogma banned (Another lie by KS and Mirimax) they bought into the bigest swindle of the decade NOWHERE has the cathoilc leage said that dogma sohlud be banned they just said they would simply not go and see a offensive film (I.E. no money for Kevin Smith to buy heroin...) plain and simple....Which leads me to-------------2. D0GMA costs too dam much. Lions Gate bought the film for about 16 million meaing this film must gross 32 million beofre it breaks even (That does not include marketing so you can add another 5 million for that at least...) thats more then all of Kevin Smith movies combined.... Rember Kevin Smith audience showed up in droves for dogma they just could not cover the costs of a 20 milion film. And he has little cross over appeal beyond his slacker/grunge base (wicgh is smaller than you think....) This why Bob and Harvey need to create contrvery and threats of viloence so us dumb saps (in their mind) will show up...Yoyure being played just like artisan did with the BLAIR SHIT PROJECT DONT BELIVE THE HYPE KEVIN SMITH IS A CRAPPY FILMAKER AND THE WHOLE WORKLD WILL SEE IT WITH DOGMA.....yes and kurt cobain will still be dead too... now If I have offened your Time Warner/MTV liberal sensibiltites please send all hate mail to bankofkev@hotmail.com

Well done, Maccabee, I am almost completely stunned by the overwhelming stupidity of your comment. Anti christianity is politically correct? I won't even dignify that comment with an argument. But the fact is that "those poor Jesus followers" tried to get Dogma banned without even seeing the bloody thing. I suggest that said followers grow some balls and put their time, money and considerable effort into ending, oh, I dunno, 3rd world poverty perhaps, and not on a harmless piece of entertainment, and leave us "dumb animals" to our fun. Forgive us. That's what you do, right?

  • The above posts by these two
mental midgets proves one thing; that those who stand opposed to "Dogma" (before viewing it, mind you) have no interest in the film itself. Rather, they seek to undermine "Hollywood" in genaral and Disney specifically. The fact that Disney is no longer affiliated with this movie has not stopped the Catholic League from deriding Disney at every available oppurtunity. I must say 20th Century Fox's rant WAS one of the funniest things I've read since reading the script for "Dogma"---the bit about how we should read Michael Medved and how "we" need to get educated were classic. I just can't wait to see him/her on the protest line---they'll be holding the sign that says "Teh Catholic Lege Sez Boykott Dawgma Now!!!" As for Maccabee, if you hate Hollywood so much then why in Gods name are you reading a Movie News site? You don't have to give dime one to Hollywood just like we "dumb bastards" don't have to contribute to Jerry Falwell, Pat Robertson, or other like minded Corporations that make more of a mockery (not to mention more money) of Christianity than Hollywood ever will.

    by yossarian

    1. Chasing Amy succeeded in reaching a more mainstream audience than Kevin Smith's previous films. It has been in cult-film status since release on video and is kept on the best renters rack in both the local Hastings and Blockbuster, that is, when it isn't checked out.

    2. Everyone I know loves Clerks and Chasing Amy, a lot of them do it without knowing anything about Kevin Smith, the marketers need only say, "from the makers of Clerks and Chasing Amy comes" and a LOT of people will be there.

    3. It's got Matt Damon and Ben Affleck. Those two guys will get a lot of attention for being together again on celluloid. It has something to do with them winning an Oscar, or something. Also, can you say female appeal?

Ben Affleck, Mr. Indie champion, has made nothing ever since his success but mainstream Hollywood ca-ca, as they say. Maybe Phat boy likes Kevin Smith so much because his mediocre talent gives him the impression that someone with his obvious lack of intellect may have a chance to someday be near Salma Hayek showing off her moneymakers.

I've learned that it doesn't pay to bash the following on this little "fan-boy" site....
    1. Lord of the Rings
    2. Anything Kevin Smith writes, farts or otherwise excretes (including his "films")
    3. Anything pushed out of Robert Altman's womb

Any negativity towards these aforementioned subjects will bring the trash out of the dumpster... and all the little comix-kids will put down their special edition X-Man comic (the one where Rogue has really big hooters) and ballyhoo about how "WE" - meaning everyone else but them - don't get it.

    by daredevil

Geez, what is with you? Seems like everyone has to be on one side of the issue or the other. Personally, I've liked most of Kevin's work. Clerks was amazing, Mallrats was almost as good in its quirky way, His Superman script was right on, and his work on Daredevil is some of the best in comics history (can't wait for Green Arrow.) Even Chasing Amy had its moments (The "What's a Nubian?" scene comes to mind.) Me, I'm a conservative Christian, but I'm looking forward to seeing Dogma. See, even religious people like comedies dealing with religious subjects (I love Monty Python's "Life of Brian" and just saw an old SNL skit on TV that cracked me up with Charlton Heston playing Moses and Rob Schneider as Edward G. Robinson.) To wrap it up, Dogma might suck, it might be good, who cares and quit complaining about everything. If you don't think you'll like it, don't watch it. Otherwise go see it and bash it (intelligently) afterwards.

Im saying that you dont have to bash movies that you have not seen maybe if you would read the script you might enjoy it, and you might not, but please it really bugs me when someone like yourself tries to ruin a movie for everyone else just because they have there own problems, dont take it out on us, i dont read comic books, i have better things to do then read that crap, but i happen to be a fan of Kevin Smiths earlier work, yes Dogma will most likely tank at the box office, but i have read the script (the final one i might add), and thoroughly enjoyed it, quite possibly his best work, and i for one thought the trailer looked great, but please dont try to ruin it for all of us, if it does suck, ill be the first to tell you you were right, since you probably wont shut up unless you get that satisfaction

    Dogma isnt anti-cathloc

    by eric draven

20th Century Fox guy...u are an ass wipe.
You called Kevins movie anti cathloc.....Kevin Smith is, in fact very religious, and actually attends church regularly. He has said that the movie is almost so pro cathloc it is sick.
So, untill u see the movie, dont even try to say what it is and how good it is, thats what the head of the Cathloc League is doing...the man has not even seen the movie. And yes , the League has said they want to stop Dogma's release....
I visit www.newsaskew.com daily, and they have posted EVERYTHING the cathloc league has put out to rally against Dogma.
The truth is, Kevin is an excellent writer, a great filmmaker, and sure, his humour isnt for everyone, but with his strong writing abilities, and excellent cast, I'm sure Dogma will be a sucess.
Next time, find out what u are arguing about, otherwise u sound like an ignorant moron...which, u do.

They are easily funny as Jim Carrey, if not a lot more funny. Could someone please tell me why Jay and Silent Bob are not funny? You can't!! They are the most hilarious duo ever filmed, and i could watch a million movies with them. Thank God they have the leads for Dogma...I am approaching Episode I levels of excitement for Dogma!!!

--> WHY 20TH GUY IS RIGHT, YOU'RE WRONG

    by cathfilm

The Catholic League is not a single corporate identity. There are 30-40 people (live human beings) who run the place, many of whom have differing and conflicting views of what constitutes Catholicism. Do you *REALLY* think each one of those 30 to 40 people *REALLY* march lock-step together like robots in a really bad Isaac Asimov novel. Give me a physical break. I just think it's too funny the people who see things in black & white, Dogma vs. Catholic League, cool kids vs. the geeks, reasonable people vs. the irrational troglodytes. DID IT EVER OCCUR TO ANYONE THAT MAYBE THERE'S CATHOLICS WHO DON'T LIKE "DOGMA" BECAUSE...**gasp!**...IT'S A BAD MOVIE. Secondly, there's not a single intelligent movie in 1999 (pick "Election," "An Ideal Husband," whatever) that didn't tank at the box office. THEREFORE, IF "DOGMA" IS AN INTELLIGENT MOVIE, IT WILL TANK, TOO. Do you really think mainstream audiences will say, "Gee, honey, this Kevin Bacon horror movie Stir of Echoes is sold out, why don't we go see Dogma?" Listen to what you're saying. There's no black & white here. It's all shades of gray.

    20th Century Fox...

    by jsamson

..Wow, that's all very interesting, that thing about Kevin and the Weinstein's making up stories on Dogma being banned.....strange, because I'e read every piece on Dogma, and never did either KS and Bob and Harvey nor anyone from the Catholic League talk about banning the film. And, how can you say we're idiots if we 'believe that story'? How would you know yours was true? Do you have recorders hidden all over The Weinstein's and Kevin's houses? I mean, you can say Dogma will suck all you want, that's yer opinion. But geez, try and either at least come close to having some grammar and spelling in your post or make intelligent points. Geez, it scares me sometimes, how stupid some people are....

Anyways, everyone's discussing about Dogma bombing or whatever, and it seems to me everyone's measuring movies by money, like Lots of Cash=Top-Notch Flick. I'm sorry, but in a summer where The Sixth Sense, Big Daddy and Austin Powers 2 are some of the highest grossing movies, that logic looks severely flawed (I know everyone likes 6th Sense, but I hated it. It was boring and that twist ending sucked. Big Daddy was just shit. Why can't Adam Sandler make a funny movie again, like Happy Gilmore? and Austin Powers 2...well, I saw it but there was no need. I could have watched the first one again. I would have laughed more too.) As someone said, Iron Giant hardly made any money, and it's definitely the best film this year. So money made doesn't reflect on quality. Just remember that.
I'm glad to see that almost everyone posting to here seems to have a brain. Keep writing intelligent posts everyone, I have much more fun reading them.

    by dawson's crack

Trainspotter, you have to be kidding? Silent Bob is as funny as Jim Carrey? What if Jim Carrey grew his hair and had a beard and wore a backwards baseball cap? What then? Would he be funnier? Would he be as funny as, say, a piece of toast?

  • I hope the movie will be good however ANYONE who thinks something is bad and yet has not even seen it is simply mentally masterbating. Anyone remember "The Last Temptation of Christ?" How many of those picketing morons actually saw it? ZERO! Preconceived notions yet no substance. See the movie then make up your mind.

Using the Gifts You Were Given...AKA Free Will

    by all thumbs

Please excuse this if it gets too long. That said...I'm not a Catholic, I'm what I call a Questioning Christian. Basically, I'm open for suggestion and question my religion because, according to what I am taught about God giving us free will, I have every right to and it's not going to make me a bad person or not devout enough. Smith is questioning his religion through the medium he knows best...movies. I can understand why the Catholic League would be upset, but when I went to their site I found their argument or call to arms consists of taking pieces of reviews and interviews with the cast out of context and posting it on their site. Their main reason for being mad, according to their site, is the movie has elements of bigotry or anti-Catholicism, but they use quotes from both Smith and reviewers that say the film is either "pro-faith" or "pro-Catholic." Also, their beef is with the vulgarity and violence in the movie. They ARE going to protest and they are going to boycott or put pressure on the companies that endorse this film. That's their right, their use of free-will. What they should do is use their free-will to just not go see the movie since it is "not up their alley." For me, this movie sounds like a great thought provoker, not because of the dick jokes, but because of the main theme and subjects like if Mary and Joseph had sex. Personally, I think it's possible for the guys who wrote down what God told them and what they witnessed in that thing we now call the Bible to get some things wrong and then later we get it wrong in the translation? Is "our" Bible the only true one...maybe not...who knows but God...or that entity that creates and guides...whatever you believe.

    not listing my opinion

    by jasmc

Okay.I've just wasted the past fifteen minutes of my life hanging on every word of everyone's postings.Wow. I'm really glad that everyone has such strong opinions, but jesus guys, relax a bit. See, everyone has an opinion and they are entitled to it. For some reason, yelling at them doesnt seem to change it, it makes it stronger. Weird thing about life. Anyway, im reserving my opinion so I don't get caught up in it also. However, I do have a STRONG opinion, believe me. Anyway, who cares what joe-blow in Idaho has to say. Ignore it. Don't get enraged by it.

    by 20th century fox

Just because a group of people decide that sometihng offends them and decide not to go and support it does not make them censors. And yes they have the right to boycott or protest it is granted to them under our constitution...I guess every other PC group is allowed to protest execpt catholics why? I guess relly dogma must suck if it cant handle a few protest and you want police to silence every catholic like that has been goping on for the last 2000 years and still goes on today but hey to you thats just peachy wow....I guess free speach is dead...

That arguement is bull shit...Oh you get your news from view askew gee theres a really reliable source I challenge you to find any quote from a catholic legue in a mainstream news publication calling for the bannig of dogma or voilce agasinst the film...Also they have read drafts of the script you fanboys are beating off over so when I hear all this how can they bash a film they know nothing about then i ask this question how can you priase a film YOU know nothing about since you basing you opions on the same stuff as the catholic legue..If yuore using view askew as your main source (which you say you read every day) then you bring new meaning to the words mind nummed robot...

So you think reading a script is the exact same thing as watching a film...? (And you read it off the net, at that... I actually doubt that you can read, think and reason at all.) What a fool. Get a life. Meanwhile, everyone else ~ go see the film then make up your mind. If you don't want to see the film because you don't like the actors or the director ~ then don't go and see it, but don't bother to say how much something is "bad" without actually witnessing the event.

if you thought the reason I corrected your spelling on MIRAMAX was because you called it "crapamax". Sweet fucking Christ, how can one person be so Goddamn dumb? Let's try it this way, as taken from -YOUR- post "delicateMirimax"<~~ Se that, you pinhead? This is what I was correcting, you blind fuck. It's MIRAMAX. Jesus Christ, I can see the moronic joke in spelling it "Crapamax" but this is just plain dumb. You can obviously tell it was spelled like that because you have no fucking clue. What next, gonna come back and think of some excuse for spelling it like that?

    by eric draven

I dont see how u can use the arguemnt that News Askew isnt a reliable source for info...
they are the BEST source, ya know why you ignorant fuck?....its because, to be fair, they have posted all the info from the Catholic League's crusade against Dogma...
And i completly agree with Kevin Smith when he sais that mabey instead of trying to raise money to protest a MOVIE...why dont they concentrate thier efforts on, oh i dont know, giving the money to the homeless or something worthwhile?!?!
Catholic League is pissed over stupid things, such as Alanis Morissette playing God because, and i quote, "she sings songs about oral sex"...gimmie a break.
Bill Donahue (i think that is his name), who is the leader of the Catholic League, has not seen the movie, has not (and wont) talk to Kevin Smith or the Weinsteins.
He is just going on what he has heard what the movie is about and such.
And you might want to invest in having someone proof read your posts....obviously you never got hooked on phonics.

And to all you Kevin fans....I'll see u at the movies.....snoogans.

A reply thin skined Kevin Smith Defenders

    by 20th century fox

Man you guys OK yes my spelling sucks I freely admit that in a second (Hey harry Thhink you could put a spell check on here...)but that does not make my opions any less vaild (The mere fact you attcking me for my spelling mini-maul olny shows you cant defend thisfilm if your life depened on it)...but now to some of the idotic counter posts....NO WHERE has the catholic legue tried to ban dogma....yes they will boycott it...its their right to do so...I mean if this film is soooooo good as you kevin smith fanboys say it is do you honestly think that disney would have dropped it. And despite the lack of education displayed by some here you CAN go and see dogma (although my advice is to run out and see it the first chance you get sine it wont be playing long....) no noe is preventing you from doing so just simply expect some people not to go and spend their money on somewthing that to them is offensive. And thats not censorship. I mean when liberal hollywood icon Barbra Strisend was telling people to boycott colorado since the residents of that state chose not expand goverments intriusion into thier lives by making what a group of people do in their private lives a protected class of citizeney was that censorship of thought by your standards YES yet those people exersised their constittional right and yes I was still able to go to colorado just like as the catholic legue will boycoot dogma you still can go. And if all you Kevin Smith fans make tyhe film a huge hit or the boycott causes the film to fade from theatres thats the free market at work. Remember Bob and Harvey wienstien bought Dogma for disney for about 16.5 million that means the film will have to make about 32 million (NOTE I'm not incuding marketing costs here either...) to BREAK EVEN. And films who bash catholics do not do well here...Yes Michael Medved book hollywood Vs. America goes into this in great detail...And to the poster who said he was washed up well If having at least 3 Ny Times best seller books, A top rated radio show with over 100 sations and being asked repeatly to be on Polticall Incorrect and working the college lecutre circut is your standrad of being washed up then whats a cutting edge critic someone who hates a film then gives a positive review just so a filmmker will invite him to a party (A issue detailed in his book by the way in regards to the grandddy of all anti-catholic films the utra money losing LAST TEMPTATION OF CHRIST...) Yeah and 32 million is more than waht KS films grossed combined....In 1991 a very controvresal film called basic instict came out TRI-STAR could have dropped it but when they saw the product and realised how good it was (Even with out the sex and nudity it still tells a great story...) stuck with it. And made a fortune noyl time will tell but when four people call me an idot and cant argue me a thinking level (typos aside) then the future does not bode well for dogma...please send all hate mail to Bankofkev@hotmail.com

    20th Century Idiot Loser Jerk-Off

    by mini maul

I'm going to see the film which is what the director and artists intend the general public to do instead of reading a script (which is not necessarily in it's finnished form.)

Listen friends, don't let this Idiot tell you what to do. Think for yourselfs! Independant thought is still your most valuable resourse! Refer to my previous notes about making up your OWN MIND, rather than falling in with the facious mindless thought process of this 20th Century Idiot Loser Jerk-Off Ass Wipe of the Universe who thinks that a movie which ONLY makes money is good.

My last words to you 20th Century Idiot is to find yourself another soap box because everyone who has read these notes thinks your a fool. Read them yourself. If you can.

I write. See this is a classic example of the Kevin Smith Defender someone points out the uphill struggle dogma faces and backs up his theory with evidence and we get a angry rant about free thought as i have said before YOU WILL BE ABLE TO SEE DOGMA mini maul yes you will...And if you feel that anyone who is ciritcal of KS is telling other poeple what to think then in my book you ARE the idiot for all your venom you still have YET to conter at least one of my arguments (Well you were right about my spelling...oh well...)...Also making money IS the name of the game if KS was a moeny loser do you think he still be making movies and keeping his deal with Crapamax....(Remeber CLERKS and CHAING AMY were profitable films) and Ill say t before and say it again if Dogam was this kick ass film do honestly think disney would have dropped it? I think not well soon time will tell...My advice mini maul is go to the theatre early to see Dogma I have a felling it wont be there for long...
