The Chosen People for BNAT1138 Are Officially Revealed!!!
Hey folks, Harry here and I have to say... This was a very interesting process this year. It was rather amazing how many shaved their heads. That wasn't my intention. I was raised by hippies, so the idea of shaving one's head... well, that's astonishingly inconceivable to me. Some people were chosen by their choices of Sid Haig or Walter Murch films. Some via their creative and unusual Masturbation Material. Jeff Mahler's choice of the film AQUAMARINE was quite telling and almost caused his dismissal - but not quite. Shockingly - nobody took a photo of their penis and put their face on it, though I was expecting that from Andrew Michael McWeeny - the reality was far filthier.
But generally people were chosen via a combination of all the questions, their location, interests and how they choose their 3 vintage titles. The Drafthouse will be contacting everyone on the below list with Ticket information - and further updates. I look forward to seeing all of you at the BNAT Pre-Party on December 11th at the HIGHBALL and then the next day, December 12th, through till Sunday! It is going to rock hard! The line up is looking pretty damn happy awesome. Congrats. The winners are alphabetical by first name... except for the final 3 winners, who I chose amongst the folks willing to come alone. You three... you got in by the hair of your chinny chins!!!

Oh well, I'll be in Austin that weekend anyway, you guys have fun.
-
Congrats to all that made it
-
... and damn.
-
If there's anything in particular you want from Sweden for your birthday let me know. If not, I'll think of something.
-
that I picked "Captain EO" for one of my answers. But how could I not?
-
someday i will make it. and by that i mean the next two years, since we will all die after Butt Numb 2012
-
ah, well...i made the effort. now i have to go tell my kid that daddy was rejected...hope you're happy, harry! (wait, happy harry! dammit, i should've chosen "pump up the volume" for one of my vintage flicks!) heh heh. congrats, all.
-
Sorry I won't be there.
-
So sad.
-
Thought "fish slime" for sure would've got me in.
-
Thanks Harry. I´ll see you guys there. For those who didn´t make it. Never stop trying.
-
Maybe next year for me!
-
Hey Harry, I wonder if there is anyway you can post some of the winning submissions (omitting any identifying info of course) as I and others here I'm sure would love to see how the lucky few were chosen.
-
Not a chosen one this time. Have fun whoever got in!
-
we made it! we made it! i gotta book plane tickets! it's a geekgasm! i just totally blew a load all over! this is the best christmas ever!
-
Geek Christmas in a month and a week!
-
zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz
-
maybe next year.
-
Who knows, I might just be a crazy bastard again and drive out from Miami to do standby line.
-
if vintage films were such a big role, im curious, what did everyone else put for their vintage films?
-
That ain't cool news.
-
I recognize is Elijah Wood, and I ain't him or his brother Zack so...
My first year to apply so I'm not surprised. Was fun seeing how it all goes. -
Almost... can't wait until we get to Austin and it all begins!
I'm also feeling loads of sympathy for people who didn't get in. and I'm feeling so seriously fortunate and so pumped!! -
The poor fuck.
-
there's always next year =)
-
Now I don't have to take time off work, buy plane tickets, or rent a car and hotel room.
-
Elijah Wood.
-
one of these days I'll have enough money to travel to BNAT and I'll apply.
-
I tell you what. Picking the list each year is just brutal. There's a group of about 18 friends of mine that just didn't quite make it in this year that I wish could be there, but I put a limit on personal friends that get in. That way I can choose people that I've never met, so I can possibly introduce a new experience for those people that may result in meeting some really cool people. There is no single category that outshines another. The photo is how people go instantly to the FAIL folder - where people just decided to do NOTHING for the photo. Well, the photo thing is for the Yearbook - and if you don't want to add to the fun of the yearbook... Oh well, guess you didn't want to come. But I had a shit ton of people that did a great photo this year... or at the very least tried their best. So they all go to the MAYBE folder - which was quite full this year. The WINNER folder - as applications come in, I pick the folks that I can't imagine BNAT without.... and then when I get the final total, I fill out the rest of the seats with folks from the MAYBE folder. There - I pick based on Photo, Location (try for a 50/50 split from domestic TEXAS and foreign GREATER USA & BEYOND), Sex (yes, for Bathroom realities there needs to be about 40-50% female), and then the answers to the other questions - as I read applications... I look for things that make me smile, make me want to meet you, makes me think you'll fit in with the others chosen and lastly... just a random confluence of all it smushed together that says, "LET ME IN YOU FAT BASTARD!"
-
And I totally thought I had no chance.
-
The news of Fort Hood made me depressed. It's horrific. At least all that happened to me is I didn't make it on to the BNAT list. I was so looking forward to going though. I really couldn't think of anything better to make this year worthwhile...
-
It seemed like you just wanted a straight on head shot with a shaved head. I look a lot like robert wilonsky in my picture. Maybe Harry doesn't like the fellow Texan.
-
had to apply?
-
Harry, you said at the Land of the Lost event you hoped to see me at future events. Why Wasn't I on the list? THE LIST!!!!!?!?!?! Oh damn... Maybe next year...
-
Lives in Austin. He's always there.
-
I'm depressed.
-
I will do better. I rushed my app this time. Maybe i'll have a better shot if I just take my time.
-
do you think people who just photoshopped themselves bald went into the FAIL folder? Is that considered doing nothing? Cause it was a pain in the ass doing mine, haha.
-
Yeah - and he did a bald shot that was excellent!
-
no - Photoshops were totally considered. The Failure folder was 100% hair on heads, did nothing special for the photo people.
-
Because the person they said they were applying with, didn't send in an application - so what was I supposed to do? SO for future years - if you say you're applying with someone, make sure they send in an application. Otherwise I just feel awkward letting you in alone.
-
maybe charging a 1 dollar application fee for BNAT?
Not for yourself maybe, but for that Saturday Morning Kids Club?
What I mean is, I'm sure anyone willing to travel to Austin and do this might also be willing to cough up a buck for application, and if you get 6-7000 dollars for the Kids Club, wouldn't that go a long way for them? And if it means you get a couple of hundred applications less, it would make your job of going through the applications a lot easier.
I dunno. Just a thought. -
Ok cool, thanks for the clarification. Counting down the days till I try again next year. Did you remember mine and Jeff McNeils apps? Hopefully we were at least a maybe, haha.
-
My friend sent in an application, Harry...
-
Best One-Year Anniversary ever! Our first date was December 13, 2008.
Thank you Harry! -
Not I.
-
YES!!! YES!!! YES!!!
Finally my life has meaning!!!
See you in 5 weeks, ya'll!! -
foiled again..
-
Interesting..the Absence of Drew Mcweeney On that list..very interesting.
-
congrats to everyone that got in... can't wait to see y'all next month! :)
-
Thank you so much Harry. I'm still shaking that I actually got in. Gonna be a crazy next few days logistically but so worth it. Thanks SO much. - Germain Lussier
-
WOO! I'm in! It was the Masturbation Material wasn't it, Harry? And the awesome pic. I know it.
-
I didn't get it. Since it was my first application, I didn't think we would. My friends got in...again, so that's cool. Maybe next year...
Have fun to those of you going and congrats! -
Thanks so much, Harry. It's a true honor.
-
I must have PLOPP. Or a LET THE RIGHT ONE IN region-free Blu with the correct subtitles. Whichever's better. Heh.
-
the good news is you can have more time to spend sitting in the chatroom.
-
My app was far from perfect, but I had hope.
Oh well.
Enjoy yourselves... you lucky bastards. -
You have my Myspace or my email, right? Send me a list of what you want, I'll bring it.
-
I extreamly out of touch if you think that's cool.
-
I found out shortly after it was posted, but this is the first time I could comment. So excited!! See the rest of you lucky bastards in Austin!!
-
Focus on the important things
-
Me am not! You take back!
-
Honestly, thank you. It's an honor to be invited to your party. Can't wait to see you and Yoko.
-
THEY ARE IN! Are usually Talkbackers you've never seen around.
-
YESSSSSSSS! thats all i can say, besides thank you harry! We fucking love you more than anything at this moment and cant wait to meet you! -Chris and Natasha
-
Shit I did have some hair on my head to. I had it shaved down to a zero but that leaves a little nub. So I probably went straight to the failure pile.
-
Photo? I do. What does a 30 year old who looks 12 with a shave head look like besides a cancer patient?
-
Not sure what your fucking problem is but it's nice to hear from you not hiding behind some different nick and trying to sadly sneak into chat.
-
Though this year I got married ... so maybe BNAT will have to settle for the 2nd best day for 2009. But words can't express how happy I am to be among the chosen few this year. Can't wait to see my 24 hour family this year and my heart goes out to all those who didn't get in. Don't give up. While there is stand by there is hope.
-
2 years in a row. This is great bad luck to those that did not.Last years made me really wish I had applied the year before.
-
cool things other people get to do, oh wait not really....
-
that the reason Harry never posts the answers given by the people who make it in is that if you are not inherently cool enough to get it right the first time, why be allowed to copy?
I know I'm a total bitch for saying this, but it had to be said. -
or could you get fancy, I know it was a thx theme but in theory would making myself look like Mickey Knox have helped my chances or hurt them?
-
wah!
-
3rd year of being passed up. Note to everyone : for next year, 31 really means 5.
-
Thanks Harry! And now I need to find a b-day present that will top the laser you got last year. I don't think that's possible though...
-
did people choose the most?I'm playing a lot of Skeeball
-
Sure it is. Three words: Palm Flame Thrower.
-
this was my 1st time applying for BNAT, so i wasn't overly optimistic about my chances, but after seeing the final 3, had i realised i could've left that partner field blank, i wouldn't have put an arbitrary name for a friend i knew wasn't going to apply. i wish in retrospect that was more explicitly explained as such, especially since i have acquaintances that were admitted. oh well.
-
if somebody gets me a Palm Flame Thrower - I promise to creatively use it at BNAT with Jeff Mahler!!!
-
Isn't it usually over 200?
-
Was my masturbation material submission. I like to think that's what got me in.
-
... the times, they really are a-changin'. I'm not complaining, but just observing, that many familiar faces aren't part of BNAT this year. Many of the ones that will make me saddest didn't even apply because real life just plain got in the way. It's just a reminder that we're all a little older, and nothing is permanent. I'm pleased, as always, to be attending, but more than ever, I consider it a privilege, not a right, and I look forward to seeing everyone there.
-
Wish I had the money to apply this year. Hope you all have a great time.
-
Applied, don't even post here ever.
-
Made it, not applied.
-
for now at least...
-
....isn't it, Harry!? :-P
-
And mention that Watchmen: Ultimate Cut and Clone Wars: Season 1 came out on DVD this week. Bc I had NO idea they were out until I went to Best Buy just to make an exchange earlier today.
-
That goes for Frodo and Boba Fett and the director of Fanboys. I could fill this up with useless platitudes, but hey, this was my first year even applying so congrats...so next year, I'll (hopefully) have a better sense of how to earn a golden ticket...*sigh*...it's gonna be a long year to wait, and no...that ain't cool.
-
...to beat the shit out of a fat man on wheels? Of course it is. That's how Harry gets to be this big of an asshole with no fear of repercussions.
-
But I will apply again next year and the enxt and the next! BNAT is too awesome for me to get a sense of entitlement about. I consider myself lucky to have gone once, let alone twice. Oh, and put up my reviews already. I got more that I'm waiting to send in.
-
So, what's the deal with stand-by?
-
Then again, I didn't apply.
-
The Jeremy Bulloch on this list is a totally nice guy (I met him last year in the pre-BNAT line)... but he's not *that* Jeremy Bulloch. So, no, we're not all hanging out with Boba Fett at BNAT.I did however meet Elijah last year, and he was really laid back, totally having a blast.
-
It is an honor to say I'm going. I put a lot of hope into it and as an insane film going cinefile I am grateful 100%. Thank you, thank you!!! I'm so excited for all who are going and will be missing some others the whole time, again THANKS. I am a sap.
-
You were chosen by the caprice of a moron. Don't believe me? Look at what movies he's reviewed positively on this site. Then look at how he's managed his personal life. Then wonder if being chosen by him is an honor dubious.
-
Oh a tad.
-
- and none of this namby-pamby doubling up business either, you slacker!
-
Great minds think alike - but fools seldom differ, as the saying goes.
-
TOO MANY VADERZ!
-
With even more put you to sleep action.
-
is a total piece of shit. It is just free advertising for Amazon. There are no actual DVD reviews, just the ramblings of a confused fat man. Wil there be an actual review of Watchment Ultimate cut? Will there fuck!
-
I have lived in Austin 5 years now. this will be my 4th attempt to get in.
One year I will make it! -
He'll be the guy wanking and crying at the same time on the sidewalk opposite.
-
They're in my internetz, eating my cheezeburgerzz... or something.
-
Elijah Wood did not have to pass anything, everyone knows he gets a free pass as a famous friend, and as much I don't like to rag on Harry, we all know he will do anything to get even the smallest taste of fame from the ball sweat of Hollywood
-
Yeah I agree, unless we see his pictures from years past.
-
There was an unskippable entry in the form saying "who are you going with", and he admits that the only single people who got in were the last three in the list, who only got in "by the hair of their chin".
-
HB - Thank you so much!! Now I need suggestions of what to get you for your B-Day this year. BNAT will be here before you know it!!
-
Despite the disconsolate ruminations of the many Bitter Bettys in this talkback, and maybe because of it, I feel obliged to say: Thank you, Harry, for providing us with a place of delight and diversion, insight and inspection, in Ain't It Cool News, and for working so hard to bring us an incredible event at a time when you should be relaxing and soaking up the goodwill and wishes of friends and family. See you at BNAT 1138!
-
Fat guys in wheelchairs, not so much.

But do you think his answers really swayed Harry's decision to pick him? I don't blame Harry for choosing Elijah, if I had a birthday party I would want famous people there too, but be a man and admit that Elijah got in because he is Elijah Wood, and not because he passed the application process.
-
another year down the drain.
-
Wasn't ELIAJH WOOD!!! NOW! Like if he was more like Macaulay Culkin is now. Fuck it would just be cooler if Macaulay Culkin was going instead. Or if LOTR's never happened, or they did and sucked or something. Just some bitter child actor, doesn't need a drug problem. Maybe he gets a LITTLE TOO drunk at the party and talks a bunch of shit until one of his buddies has to take him away. But I mean Eliajh Wood is kind of like the Brad Pitt of geeks.
-
Met him at last year's BNAT. The one I got into. Couldn't have been a more humble, down to earth guy. Stood in line with everyone else to get his ID badge and goodie bag. He even pulled out his driver's license to show the volunteer. I asked him why he didn't just pull out a Lord of the Rings DVD.
-
I got in as a single person and all you have to do is put in n/a if the question does not apply to you. Lighten up calm down and be happy.
-
Yeah I bet he's a great guy, like I said the Brad Pitt of the Geek Universe. It would just be funnier if he were more Dickie Roberts.
-
He seems like a really cool guy who you could chill with, drink beer and shoot the shit.
-
I think those are the only threads he's ever posted on. Thanks for the advice. I put something like Anybody in the box.
-
They'd keep sneaking into the bathroom to do coke and get molested by Michael jackson.

SERIES7 - I NOTICED THAT TOO ABOUT WINNERS NOT TALKBACKING
by bringingsexyback
How can anyone visit these TBs and never post? Boggles the mind.
-
Its always these random people coming out of the wood work thanking Harry. If you look they've only posted on BNAT threads. Sure maybe they read the site daily, but you think if they were people who'd "think you'll fit in with the others chosen" that they'd be more prevelent in the TB's. That or Harry hates Talkbackers? And yes there gotta be some people going who are regular talkbackers.
-

God Bless all of you, wheter you got in or not.
by the reluctant austinite
It's probably been a rough couple of years for a lot of you out there with the economy in the dumps and bad news every way you turn. I've lost a job, a pet and a close family member myself. I'm coming "home" for Christmas this year at BNAT (and already look forward the "12th Angry BNAT" copyright 11/06/09), and I hope to see many of you this year. For those not coming but still in town that weekend, drop by the Alamo and say hello. We'll be the big group of people standing outside between screenings (all night). We'll give you the inside scoop! For those around the world who applied but didn't make the cut this year, my heart goes out to you and I wish you and your families the best this Christmas season. If there is ANYTHING that we who are going to BNAT can do to give you a Geek boost, let us know and we'll try our best to do so. I know Harry would like to have almost ALL of you (and with satelite tech maybe some day that could even be a reality!), but the current reality of seating at the Alamo makes it impossible. Until National BNAT Day is a reality, keep your chins up and your love of cinema alive!
-
I figured it would be the Dirty BNAT Dozen
-
Trying to figure out where it all went wrong. Perhaps I shouldn't have said there was only one Donald Pleasance role in that he played the same character in everything. And the conehead photo was a bad idea. There's two ways to go with that. Incredibly faithful OR really clever. The conehead was neither. Not that I'm obsessing over it or anything.
-
But who ever said the Dirty BNAT is probably right.
-
Ok I'm really done now.

Series7 - Ever notice that a lot of talkbackers are just trolls?
by amy_t
Crawling out of the woodwork and registering an account... Not pointing fingers per se, unless you're darth_fuck_shit. But Talkbacker does not necessarily equal Movie Fan (which is one of the qualifiers for BNAT attendance) and vice versa. Considering the amount of talkbacks that consist of "FIRST!" (or a failure of First), calling Harry names (though he seems to take that in good humor), calling attendees names, and petty arguments... why would someone want to specifically seek out talkbackers? Also, with the slew of apps he has to go through and the fact that the talkback registration process consists of an alias and an email address, it's not exactly efficient to deliberately weed out talkbackers vs. nontalkbackers.
-
I agree...BNAT is supposed to be a gathering of movie fans. Not trying to sound corny, but it's a togetherness type of thing. I wouldn't want to sit in a theatre full of negative, pissy people. I didn't get in, but I'm not going to turn against the people who were clever and lucky enough to be chosen. I'm happy for them and hopefully some day I'll be able to sit beside them.
-
yeah I totally agree. But there ARE a bunch of people on here who do love movies and would like to go to this. Its just odd. Something I would like to know, how many people who attend BNAT post often. I mean search those names of people that ARE so excited to go, they've only got like 10 post, and yes there are who have been on here for forever.
-
sit in a theatre full of negative, pissy people. Harry should have the ANTI BNAT and 24 hours of bad films and only allow TALKBACKERS to attend. Show X-3, Fan Four, Forrest Gump, Wolverine, Crash and whatever. Just a bunch of movies TB'ers hate. Then again I don't think Harry would be able to cover the damages.
-
I have been reading the site for years and am obviously a big fan of it, but most of the talkbacks get completely sidetracked by some lame argument so I never really have the urge to join in. I enjoy seeing everbody's thoughts on whatever subject is posted but I don't think amount of posts should be any more or less of a qualification. Harry looks for something specific in the questions and brings certain people together, that is incredibly awesome to me.
-
And post fairly frequently. Same with Bob Loblaw. And 433. They're the only ones that come to mind right off the top of my head.
-
I like that idea...Trying hard not to reference Inglorious Basterds.
-
If talkbackers want to be pissy, lets really give them something to be pissy about.
-
"And yes there gotta be some people going who are regular talkbackers."Yep, there definitely are. I'm here all the time. Probably too much.
-
Yep, 433 talkbacks all the time and has gone to most of the BNATs. He enjoys internet argument far more than I do, so I just watch over his shoulder as he trolls the world.
Oh, and Thanks Harry! Bring on Poughkeepsie Tapes Two! -

I personally can't wait to find out what 40-seconds of unfinished effects clip from some shitheap throwaway sci-fi/fantasy/low league animation wet dream was shown between the usual selection of black and white films nobody remembers or cares about and poorly-gambled high budget projects that studios already know won't make shit anywhere in the developing world.
-
Yeah I know, you were the one I was takling about. And Reluctant Austin guy and Nordling and who ever he was talking to. Like I said, there are some.
-
I'd hope Harry would be the first to admit that last year's lineup wasn't one of the better ones. I mean, Valkyrie and Benjamin Button were coming out in a week. Che was a weird choice that went over like a fart in church (the lobby was far more crowded than the theater). The best full movie was I Love You, Man and I don't think anyone is going to confuse that with a comedy classic. Seems like it was missing that holy shit moment like people must've felt watching Kung Fu Hustle, OldBoy or 300. The closest we came was watching Burl Ives get attacked by a racist German shepherd.
-
Last year, Elijah Wood filled out a complete application (I saw the extremely amusing bearded Elijah) and totally made himself a part of BNAT. Other famous folks may not have, but he totally did, so lay off on the hobbit, k?
Also, thaaaaank you Harry, this is the one trip we're taking all year and we are really looking forward to it. -
A champion of BNAT a failure of talkback.
-
I apply each year and hope for the best... I really need to do something great to get my name noticed.
-
Penis head seems like it would have been a surefire golden ticket.

Maybe I didn't want to go after all.

don't bring a pillow. Bring some 5 hour energy instead. The whole point is to see every movie. Not to sleep.

my new favorite talkback. keep pouring that love on each other!

Honestly, darth_fuck_shit is moving up my list of "favorite trolls"
-
Your insulting me with "hip" internet lingo? REALLY?? C'mon, this isn't World of Warcraft! You can do better! Give it another shot, call me a pigfucker or something.
-
..my character would simply be known as.... "The Fart"
-
So he can do a running commentary of the proceedings. I'm pretty sure that would be more entertaining than the actual event. Maybe Danny Glover's Dick Blood could come out of retirement to co-host.
-
to Darth. In fact, I wasn't even talking about you, but you're right, I should do better. Let me go peruse the Urban Dictionary for awhile. Please hold your breath while you wait for my return.
-
So how many people have already bought their plane tickets? Anyone else from Idaho going?
-
for misspelling "appologies." PS. My girlfriend totally plans on sleeping with Elijah Wood while at BNAT. Strangely, this doesn't bother me that much.
-
My commentary would start something like this: "Before we begin I would like to remind everyone in the audience that you actually went through great lengths to win the opportunity to spend 12 long hours watching a film festival programmed by a self proclaimed fan of such classics as: Van Helsing, Godzilla, The Phantom Menace, and Land of the Lost. I hope at least the foods good. Oh, and you BETTER have brought nice "pwesents" for the birthday blob or its the standby line for your ungrateful ass. Now on with the show..... Frodo! Down in front!!
-
It's 24 hours.
-
Still figuring out logistics, but will book tickets tonight or tomorrow. Where do you live in Idaho? I'm from Oregon... grew up in Eastern Oregon, went to college at UO in Eugene -- GO DUCKS! -- and now live in Portland metro. Good to have you in the NW BNAT group! :)
-
Moscow (Go Vandals, baby), but am currently trying to move to Austin, so BNAT trip will be multi-purpose (trying to find a bloody job). We bought our tickets night of, just to make sure it wasn't all some sort of dream. This was our first year applying, so it was quite a shocker to see my name on the list.
-
Pretty cool... My high school jazz choir and band used to go to the Lionel Hampton Jazz Festival every year over there; been over there several times. We'll have to connect sometime at BNAT. You'll love it.
-
Does anyone have tips for first timer? What should I bring with me, leave at home?
-
No electronic devices are allowed at BNAT. There's never been a film pirated at a BNAT screening and it's going to stay that way. If you want to take pictures of fellow BNATers then the party the night before is perfect for that. As far as personal comfort goes, this will sound weird, but a change of socks does wonders. Deodorant, toothpaste and toothbrush too. You don't want to be too comfortable at BNAT because you'll fall asleep, but you want to be comfortable enough to be able to relax. Bring money for the food at the Alamo Drafthouse, which has wonderful meals and a terrific waitstaff (and you WILL tip them, right? They deserve it). But as far as foods go, carb up before you get into BNAT but the foods you eat at BNAT should be low-carb. Believe me, you'll feel it at 2:00 in the morning if you don't. BNAT heartburn is no laughing matter. I described it once as "eating through the goddamn hull" (ALIEN) and it can be unpleasant, so bring antacids. They will sell bottomless cups of coffee/soft drinks so you can drink all you want at BNAT, so take advantage. I don't recommend caffeining up too much, you'll crash hard later on when you most want to be awake.
-
Can we bring a cell without a camera? It would be turned off of course, but my friend will need to make contact with her family a couple of times. We work nights, so we know all about staying up, and will be bringing plenty of heartburn meds i assure you. Thanks for the tips. Great Alien reference.
-
If you're going to be parking nearby, I highly recommend that if a cellphone is needed, it stays in the car.
-
And on that note - the camaraderie at BNAT is good. Even if you don't have a car nearby, someone you'll have met probably does and will probably gladly store your stuff for you.
-
We will have a car. It'll stay in the car.
-
You can keep your cell in the car and make a call during one of the breaks. If there's an emergency, whoever needs to contact you can call the Drafthouse and someone will find you (seats are assigned). Cell phones are a no-no and pretty much always have been.
-
what I'm going to do with 24 hours away from Twitter. Heh.
-
I know. It will be unbearable.
-
No kidding. But if Harry can give it up during BNAT, so can I! RT @amy_t: @nordling I know. It will be unbearable
-
The food at the Alamo is really good! I'd budget for at least $60-100 for a couple + tip. I've found that you're gonna wanna eat something about every other feature, whether it just be a snack or something more substantial.Do get the bottomless soda or coffee; It's around $11 and well worth it. The wait staff is great and the ordering system is perfect... so yes, do plan to tip them well.As for me, I like to wear clothes in layers so if I get a little chilly, I can pop on a sweatshirt or hoodie. If it gets hot, then I can take it off. I like to bring gum and mints too... something to keep your mouth fresh does wonders. If you wear contacts, bring some saline solution and your glasses. You'll probably want to give your eyes a rest at some point. Most of all, just remember that you're going to have a theater full of friends and everyone I've ever met at BNAT has been super nice. I think that's one of my favorite parts about it... watching cool, weird and sometimes "How in the hell did that get made?" films (I'm looking at YOU "The Poughkeepsie Tapes"!!)... with people who savor every moment of the experience.
-
I'm compiling an FAQ for BNAT virgins and will post it to the LJ and myspace groups. Yes, some people still use LJ and myspace. In the meantime, as Nordling mentioned, your toothbrush and a second pair of socks are two must haves.
-
Well I need to bust out my bear feet slippers and resole the bottoms of the feet for another year. I also bring a toothbrush and deodorant. 5 hour energy helped me a lot last year and I swear by the idea of bringing a change of socks. But no pillows ...
-
Thanks for all the great info. Yes cell will be in the car. We would never think of using it in the theater. Yes, I'm a big believer in tipping, especially at large events like that. I even always tip at the Sonic. I have found the LJ group, I will look forward to the FAQ. Not having my iPhone for Facebook, Twitter and texting will be strange, but I expect to be so entertained that I don't miss them. We can't wait to meet everyone. I'm the kind of person who makes friends with strangers at concerts and book signings so can't wait to meet everyone at BNAT.
-
I'm one of the lucky few and can't wait to meet you crazy bastards there. A FAQ is much needed for this BNAT virgin. And do people actually use their phone while there? I wouldn't even fathom it, considering the nonstop barrage of movies, awesomeness, food, beer and various other insane things occurring for 24 hours.
-
See above, and check out http://community.livejournal.com/bnatters/ for other questions. And no, use your phone, and instant murder.
-
Alamo coke or pepsi? Please say coke.
-
They got RC Cola/7-UP/A&W and Diet Rite. If you bring a lady friend with us and get bored, can we bang on out real quick to help stay awake?
-
I hear it on good authority that Harry has selected BNAT XI's dreaded 'twilight' endurance-fest ahead of the BIG FINISH MOVIE.
Tip Toes 2.
You heard it hear first. -
Think of it like this - When you're in a movie theater it's your one chance to GET AWAY FROM THAT THING.
I know always keeping it with you and having it on "just in case" is comforting but this is your one chance to spend 24 hours free of that burden, in a dark room, 100% fully concentrated on the three things that matter more in life than ANYTHING ELSE:
Friends, Food and (above all) WATCHING MOVIES!!
So forget about the damn phone. -
Some of us still haven't recovered from that yet. Too soon. I can't even look at dwarfs anymore without losing control of my bowels.
-
I really have to get a copy of that. It CAN'T be worse than watching SOI COWBOY.
-
TIPTOES does have David Alan Grier doing a little person on a kitchen counter. Don't see that every day.
-
i don't give s hit.
screw you hippies. -
Although the caffeine and sugar helps keep you awake, you pay for it with 3am gut-rot.
-
Oh, I know about phones. I actually wanted to get that device that shut down phones in a small area (well, before it was deemed illegal). But yeah, how many times have I almost gotten into fist fights when someone next to me is texting away like a madman to his moron who is in the bathroom. "Yo man, he's gonna get killed." And so will he if he doesn't stop texting.
I love that there's a ban on phones. I think I can survive a day without contact with the outside world. Makes me relieved. I was just asking about the little things that people will need at BNAT. Thank you for the livejournal page. I haven't used that site in years, but glad to see it's still bustling. -
Tiptoes... I'm still amazed at Gary Oldman's portrayal as a little person in it. The movie itself isn't all that good, but seeing him ham it up as a little guy is pretty great. I'm not asking for that to be one of the films they show, though.
-
Think about it. Packed theater, few exits....
-
So I guess he's repeating that in Christmas Carole?
-
I have to go against the tide and say... bring a pillow, at least one of those airline neck ones. Even if you don't sleep, it will help to make sitting more comfortable.
Make sure your shoes are comfy! Try wearing the same pair of shoes all day and around the house even while sitting down for long periods to test them out first, because the shoes that are cozy at 10 p.m. can feel restrictive at 4 a.m.
Bring sunglasses, because never is the sun more painful and abusive than when walking out of a movie theater at noon with 0 hours sleep (or 3 if it's a year with 'Che')
Have a place to crash ready and available on Sunday as soon after noon as possible. One year, we did not and I had to wait in a parking lot for two hours for our room to be ready. Never. Again. Even if you have to pay for a room for an extra night you're not using, it is Worth It to be able to get right to sleep. -
BNAT, the one thing where a Twitpeek might actually come in useful.
*snerk* -
Thanks for everyone's advice. I feel unprepared. I totally feel undeserving of being chose, but I ain't giving up my spot. I'm looking forward to an awesome experience with some cool people.
-
I'm serious. Oldman walked around on his knees and they digitally cut off his legs trailing behind him. They didn't bother adjusting the length of his arms or anything else, so he looks like Dorf!
-
I've put together all of the questions I've seen asked and put it in one LJ post: http://community.livejournal.com/bnatters/105667.html
-
i'm gonna sweat garlic with no deodorant, walk to the theater with no socks on and then take my shoes off, drink a 40oz of OE and eat a bucket of chilli, talk through Wolfman and Clash of the Titans (these are the sets Harry has most recently visited for all those who don't know, which seems to be most in attendance, so it seems most likely to catch a glimpse of these). I'm the kind of guy that can make friends just hangin' 'round the abortion clinic so I look forward to meeting all of you. Some of you seem pretty dense so let me spell it out, this sounds like an abortion. Just kidding. Have fun everyone.
-
i am hearing bottomless soda and coffee. what about beer? it is the "Drafthouse" after all
-
as a jew I'm offended. Just kidding, i'm not offended....... or a jew, but i'm sure others are, offended I mean, and obviously jewish. poor poor taste and choice of words. I know you got the beard Harry but your not Moses, or Chuck Heston.
-
"@rcjohnso ok, so you have a month to film every page, put in music and work out your narration for the presentation of Looper at BNAT1138"
-
shit, that last message wasn't a Direct Message... shit!
-
now they get to play victim for another 5,000 years...
-
Yes, there's beer, and good beer at that. However, I haven't actually had a beer at the Drafthouse since BNAT 2. Alcohol is a depressant, and it will make you sleepy. Best to drink on Sunday night when you go out with folks to talk about all the awesomeness and awfulness that you saw on screen.
-
the best way to stay awake at BNAT for me :).
-
thanks for the info. might come in handy some day. so less beer(depressant) more meth(stimulant).
-
actually not the worst idea to have a few during the last two movies so you can counteract all the caffeine and sleep when you get home. also helped take away the pain of Che.
-
Hi all, just want to say congrats to the BNAT crew for this year! I know that BNAT is such a privelege. Meeting everyone on Friday night has to be one of the Events that just adds to the experience! I want to just fly to Austin to see everyone. I keep dreaming that my back will be good, and I have an amazing application, and then I get it again...dreams dreams. Anyway, Congrats to Nord, my previous arm rest buddy! Harry, have a great time for your bday! Its very cool that you throw one heck of a bday party for you to share with people, and also give to charity at the same time. All the best to everyone who got in!
-
Didn't realise he dug movies, too.
-
We have always just gone straight to the airport Sunday night and taken the nonstop back to Chicago. 38 hours of fun!
-
I hope that's what he chooses for that one, 2 years from now. CMDX... stay the night, it's worth it. People go to Guerro's for mexi-grub and then usually to an awesome local's house for hanging out/drinking/rock band-ing. You'll be happy you did.
Sad I wasn't on the list, too. -
Depending on a few things I may drive out from Miami and try my chances at standby. Usually around forty people who also try for standby but I suspect this year there may be more. If I go I'll probably end up spending a week in Austin so it will be a great time even if I don't get in.
-
BNAT hypedness from Denmark! What are the possibilities for befriending local Austinites for sightseeing and possibly accomodations?
-
just like this site

Kinda makes all the sausage bearable.
