TAKEN's Pierre Morel Is Now Taken With SIGNALS...
Merrick here...
Pierre Morel, director of TAKEN, is revisiting "paranoid thriller" territory with SIGNALS.
contemporary story line is secret but is expected to take on the tone of a 1970s-era paranoid thriller like "Three Days of the Condor."
...says THR HERE.
Taken was Morel's second feature as a director (his first being the Luc Besson produced/co-written BANLIEUE 13 - aka DISTRICT 13 - aka DISTRICT B13. Prior to that, he served as cinematographer on UNLEASHED and THE TRANSPORTER (also Besson written/produced titles) as well as WAR, LOVE AND OTHER DISASTERS, and much more.
Morel is really talented and I'm automatically interested in whatever project he's working on. I'd love to see him do something outside of the crime/thriller genre, but..then again...he does it so damn well...
If you haven't seen BANLIEUE 13 (aka DISTRICT 13 - aka DISTRICT B13), it can be rented via Netflix (discs and/or streaming), or is available on standard DVD/Blu-Ray HERE

Hope this one is worthy of his talent!!!

The scenes at the begining involving Parkour are just staggering!
-
about that sci fi miniseries Taken, anyone remember that?
-
the guy from Kiss of the Dragon was British! Seriously though, was Taken any good? Haven't seen it
-
Er... no that was just bad dubbing!
-
Definitely, I enjoyed it. Pretty awesome when they stick the fat psychic twins in the spaceship, which proceeds to headache them to death. Also, Heather Donahue.
-
Taken kicked ass!
-
GREAT RUSH ALBUM.

Too lazy to work out if this is good or bad? Simple:
by richard_gere_raped_my_gerbil
Wait until Lockesbrokenleg posts here and reverse his opinion to find the truth! For example:If Lockes writes something like "What a bad director this guy is. Who cares about this?" then you'll know he's a great director and that everyone should care about this.Summary:Lockes gets it wrong. Every time.

TAKEN IS THE MOST OVERRATED MOVIE OF THE 21ST CENTURY
by bringingsexyback
Neeson's actions in that movie are inexplicably stupid. I have no idea why people are enamored of this movie. It's sad that this dumb director gets rewarded for his failure.
-
but the ‘No shit, Sherlock’ award of this TB goes to you. I figured out by myself that a clip of a French movie with French actors spoken in English had to be dubbed.
-
The shootout at the Guggenheim was dumb, but was worth throwing logic out the window to enjoy.
The moment Neeson found the bad guy at the airport and, instead of stealthily tracking him to his daughter, made a big public mess of it - you know you're being suckered. -
...a realistic portrayal of human behavior right out the window, but it still is an entertaining action film. And it's great to see Liam totally slumming for a paycheck. This director... he may turn out to be great, but he's definitely a graduate of the Luc Besson Franco-Hollywood Movie Factory Academy. That's both good and bad.
-
Ah, this is well-timed. We were actually having a pretty decent discussion about this guy in the CLASH OF THE TITANS tb couple of days ago. To sum up that conversation...
Pierre Morel to direct next Bond movie!
A great director of exciting and dramatic action scenes without resorting to horrible quick-cut editing, plus some classy staging of dialogue scenes mark this guy out as a talent to watch imho.
If anyone remotely involved in the Bond franchise is reading this then please slip a note under Cubby Broccolis door with 'Pierre Morel' written on it. After QOS we need 007 back on track. -
Every review I read trashed it and everybody I know who'd seen it said it was criminally crappy.
-
I'll tell you why peopel are enamored with it. Throat chops. Loooots of throat chops.
Tken is no literary masterpiece but it's a fun and exciting revenge movie. Every now and then you just need a movie about kicking ass, and Taken filled the bill in entertaining fashion. -
I rented TAKEN on Blu last week and thoroughly enjoyed it. Maybe if i'd have made the trip to the theatre i'd have expected something 'bigger' for my buck, but for home viewing i'd certainly recommend it.
It's quite an intimate film with a strong central performance and a couple of the best shot action sequences that i've seen this decade. That's my personal take. -
...love that movie...sort of a grownup martial arts fairytale. The structure is very similar to something like PINOCCHIO...wanting to become a real boy and everything.Few movies manage to take me back to being a kid...watching a movie and hating the villain with all your might, and holding your breath that everything turns out OK for the hero. Not exactly sure why UNLEASHED winds me up like that...
-
I certainly appreciate a good revenge flick with throat chops. I mean, shit, I was watching the Last House On The Left remake last week and got teh bloodlust when Tony Goldwyn and his wife were shoving the perp's hand into the garbage disposal. I almost came.
But LHOTL was superior because it operated on many levels. It built suspense. It had long, taut scenes that built up the characters. It made you care about the good guys, who they were and you want them to get their revenge because they loved their daughter and you felt what they felt. You want the bad guys to die violently because you saw how evil they were.
Taken, though, cared nothing about characterization. It went straight for the action and not for one second did I believe Neeson was a spy. The things he did were so stupid you wonder if he would even graduate from the police academy.
I would highly recommend LHOTH over Taken any time, for anyone wanting to see a revenge genre flick. -
Bob Hoskins + Jet Li = movie magic. And the car crash?! That's a little slice of fuckin' awesome right there. Sometimes the sentimentality of it goes a bit overboard for my tastes, but still, a keeper for sure.
-
C'mon, Taken was a ton of fun. I saw it with a bottle of wine and a case of beer and had a blast. It's important you watch the international cut though. Nothing says lovin' like galvanized nails in the legs. Logic be damned it was fun.And The International was great as well. Jesus, this is a tough crowd to please.
-
I think maybe that's only gotten distributed overseas? Anyone watched it yet? Any reactions? I like question marks today.
-
I liked that movie a lot as well. Evil banks, real Italian mobsters, kickass shootout, Clive. Right up my alley. Tykwer is underrated IMO.
-
The trailer sold me but good. And yeah, I was anxious to see Neeson as a father who is after the guys who done stole his little girl. But what a mess it was. I just couldn't get over the stupidity in this character's actions and the lazy plot holes. It COULD have been so much better. But alas.
Anyway that's all I'll have to say about that before I turn into the Nerd_Rage for Taken. -
Their were some reviews of B-13U on this site a while back.
-
I have no idea if Taken is good sober, but with half a bottle of wine and a six of Sam Adams in me, it was sublime insanity. And The International was great, Hobo. One of the best shootouts in film history. In retrospect, if you ignore the Transformers and Paul Blarts, it really wasn't a bad year for film. Lots of underappreciated gems out there.
-
It came out right after his wife died so tragically and people just wanted to root for the guy, even if it was just him playing a fictional character. Taken was perfect for that becasue it was personal for Neeson's charcter and he was such a badass. It's nice to see the goodguy hold all the cards sometimes.
-
From what I hear the subtitles aren't very good but I plan on grabbing it tonight and watching it after I reacquaint myself with the first one which kicked all kinds of ass.
-
I have to agree with HOD. I rented it as well and watched it with a few beers in me. I think that does help.
-
My fave so far is (500) Days of Summer. Next, Hurt Locker. Then GI Joe, Watchmen, Star Trek ...
More than makes up for TF2, which I didn't see and won't until it hits HBO.
-
It was a reaffirmation that sometimes all we need is the freedom to bash in the skulls of those evil pricks that keep fucking the world over. After I finished watching the movie I wanted to kill a lobbyist.
-
And Hawaiian Organ Donor, thanks for the tip about the copyright infringing availability... why the eff hasn't someone picked it up for theatrical release here in the States? I want on the big screen, dadgumit.
-
Yes, for once I agree with Hobocode. TAKEN plus alcohol = goodness.
Thanks for the recommendation on THE INTERNATIONAL too, i'll give that a try with a nice bottle of Shiraz. -
Fuck I wish that would come out on DVD. Haven't see 500 or GI:Jizz either. I haven't see much of anything good this year. I'd say the best movies I've seen so far are The International, Moon, Inglorious Basterds, Capitalism: ALS, District 9, and Where the Wild Things Are.
-
Come to think of it in TAKEN Neeson kills; French, Eastern Europeans, Arabs, and a sleazy American billionaire.
Thus concocting the perfect dead bad guy cocktail. -

HOD - that's what every great revenge movie should do...
by harrycalder
...give us the chance to wallow in our basest instincts, but for the greater imagined good of maiming and killing evildoers of all stripes. Taken does that pretty well. And the blond from Lost looks like a million bucks in it, too.
-
The trailer was so horrible (which appears to show the very last scene!!! - am I wrong?) I didn't give it a second thought... Maybe I should.
-
D9. Because after District 9, nothing else fucking matters.
-
GI Joe just came out. What are you waiting for? It's great. Sienna Miller as a brunette = goddess.
-
The International will go down smooth as butter with a bottle of shiraz. Keep in mind, it's not entirely logical but it's entertaining as hell. And that shootout, good christ that shootout.Hobo, the Hurt Locker came out on DVD at my place months ago. Another superb movie. And yet another one I watched with beer and wine although it required neither to be enjoyed.I'll also nominate Street Fighter as one of the preeminent gems of the year if for no other reason that it gave us Chris Klein in one the best "so bad it's good" performances ever. He shined that turd into 90 minutes of hysterical goodness. And you guessed it, I was three sheets to the wind with that one as well.
-
...and some movies require a lot more.
-
If I feel like killing some evil motherfucker after watching a revenge flick, mission goddamn accomplished.Series, you still haven't watched part 2 of Red Cliff have you? You really should download it this week. You might have a different opinion on what the best movie of the year is afterward. Not that District 9 isn't twelve different kinds of awesome. And you're right about Battle For Terra. That's one great little flick.
-
I just got it on Netflix yesterday so I'll see it this weekend. Not sure about Sienna though. Her whoreish antics in real life turn me off.
How did you see hurt locker already? sayd dvd isn't out till Jan. 12. -
...for myself and another one for Mrs. FlickaPoo and enjoyed the shit right out of that movie. And she liked it even better than I did. Life can be good sometimes.
-
Blew me away.
-
Some movies actually deserve a few bottles of Flying Dog Double IPA (11.5%). Hmmmm, I may have a drinking problem.
-
Can someone explain the like of that movie to me? I rented it on Halloween and now all my friends hate my guts.

by bringingsexyback
You guys are damned useful.
-
...a category all of their own. I wouldn't dram of watching CRANK, or a PINKIE VIOLENCE flick, or even TAKEN completely sober.Gotta knock my IQ down a few points to really get into it...
-
There has been a DVD quality screener of The Hurt Locker up on the tubes since the spring. And I watched Drag Me To Hell last night with a bottle of cab in me. I was disappointed. It seemed like such a by the numbers movie to me with some silly crap thrown in for sheer gross out value. They milked the gypsy woman and her teeth/mouth to freaking death.
-
That's a problem.
-
Totally right. Instead of genuine horror we see three different characters puke on someone or something. Zzzzz. I realize it was supposed to be campy but it was just kind of dull.
-
Is fuckinig awesome. I loved that movie. You gotta see The International! I mean I still have to, I've been meaning to. Tom Tyker is an amazing director. Though I'm thinking after The International he should just stay in Germany.
-
I assume you mean the internet. Sounds illegal. Hobo don't play that.

BSB, make sure you're getting the Hong Kong version
by hawaiian organ donor
I'm not sure what's missing in the American version but I can't imagine all that editing for a dumbed down audience will do the movie favors. Did you see part one already or are you getting both?I'm always drinking at home anyway regardless of what I'm watching. I'd be drinking right now if I could.
-
In the must see movie Where the Truth Lies. Which has the canadian guy from the last season of last comic standing in it for some odd reason....even though he said he's been in nothing. LIAR!
-
Is there going to be an American remake?
-
Tetro and The Collector. Tetro is really good up until the end. And the Collector should have gotten better buzz. Its not torture porn, nor quick cut editing, its just good.
-
That trailer looked good.
-
Really its just ok, its more of the lack of tops Lohman has that makes it worth seeing.
-
Anyone seen that? Just saw the trailer....looks like a semi decent Rom-Com.
-
But part 1 and 2 were combined for the North American release. They removed over 90 minutes which I can't imagine helps the movie. Combined both parts equal movie perfection. I'm glad you're going to experience it for the first time.Your integrity is admirable Hobo. At least you'll have a movie to look forward to during the dumping ground that is January.

I see Red Cliff and Red Cliff 2: Tjhe Decisive Battle. Are they one movie?
-
...people see that guy opening a bottle with his shoe? My new hero... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9s89FqNpXO4
-
didn't have all that useless bs to fill time and was still coherent and entertaining
-
i would like to read a review of it before i go and buy it for my kids. it's called 'legend of the secret treasure or something'.
-
That guy was hammered and still pulled it off. I can't wait to try that shit. It will get me laid for sure. God bless white wine-guzzling cougars.
-
Not to worry - I always treat Netflix discs with extreme care. They're the best value for the money of any service.
-
Yes, Hobo they are one movie. Try to watch the back to back if you can.
-
I think Harry did? Yeah he did. The last Tinker Bell CG film annoyed the shit out of me. I think it was the notion of giving Tink an origin – and a voice. That said, this was much much much better. I put this on while Yoko and I were cleaning for a party – and it absolutely stopped Yoko dead in her tracks. She’s a “Disney Princess Geek” and it hypnotized her. How’d it play for me? Well, it has a story, the graphics are kinda beautiful… and the battle with the rats is kinda scary and downright creepy. If you have a daughter, do not even hesitate in picking this up. They’ll love it.
-
Wolfhound, it looked like the last guy used it as a coaster for a Big Mac. It was all greasy and sticky. Put it underwater and luckily it worked fine. I've gotten some broken disc before.
-
I clean them all before putting them in my machine.
-
...with Windex to get it to play. Granted, there was a split second of nipple in the movie, but there is NO reason for it to have been so sticky.I wish it hadn't tried to go all big and LOTR at the end and it was nearly incomprehensible...but I sort of loved it.
-
Was nutty and didn't make sense but it was awesome.
-
You guys should check out Inhabited Island and Admiral, also Russian flicks. Very entertaining.

Neeson is badass, the movie really gets moving and keeps the momentum. Anyone know when FROM PARIS WITH LOVE comes out? I know it's scenery-chewing Travolta, but I'll still see it
-
...I'll check those out.
-
Check out Mirageman, Harry's been recomending it for ever, came out on DVD couple weeks back. Really fucking good, can't wait to see their next movie Killtro next week.

I thought it would be, 'cause as far as I know, they haven't started making it yet.
The few seconds I watched were from the other X-Men movies with the Batman music on top. It's nicely put together, but fake. -
to clean dvds?
-
That is all.
-
Thank you!
-
Just saw GI Joe. Looked like a halloween party. Taken is overrated. Series 7 said it best. District 9, best film of the year. Though, my favorite of the year and one I will be seeing most in the future was INGLORIOUS.
-
Learn to hit the hero all at once rather then trickle in and get their asses kicked.
