TAKEN's Pierre Morel Is Now Taken With SIGNALS...

Published at:  Nov 05, 2009 9:55:18 AM CST

Merrick here...

Pierre Morel, director of TAKEN, is revisiting "paranoid thriller" territory with SIGNALS.

contemporary story line is secret but is expected to take on the tone of a 1970s-era paranoid thriller like "Three Days of the Condor."

...says THR HERE.

Taken was Morel's second feature as a director (his first being the Luc Besson produced/co-written BANLIEUE 13 - aka DISTRICT 13 - aka DISTRICT B13. Prior to that, he served as cinematographer on UNLEASHED and THE TRANSPORTER (also Besson written/produced titles) as well as WAR, LOVE AND OTHER DISASTERS, and much more.

Morel is really talented and I'm automatically interested in whatever project he's working on. I'd love to see him do something outside of the crime/thriller genre, but..then again...he does it so damn well...

If you haven't seen BANLIEUE 13 (aka DISTRICT 13 - aka DISTRICT B13), it can be rented via Netflix (discs and/or streaming), or is available on standard DVD/Blu-Ray HERE.

Who cares about this?" then you'll know he's a great director and that everyone should care about this.Summary:Lockes gets it wrong. Every time.

Neeson's actions in that movie are inexplicably stupid. I have no idea why people are enamored of this movie. It's sad that this dumb director gets rewarded for his failure.

THE INTERNATIONAL WAS A BETTER MOVIE

    by bringingsexyback

The shootout at the Guggenheim was dumb, but was worth throwing logic out the window to enjoy.

The moment Neeson found the bad guy at the airport and, instead of stealthily tracking him to his daughter, made a big public mess of it - you know you're being suckered.

Taken tosses logic and anything close to...

    by harrycalder

...a realistic portrayal of human behavior right out the window, but it still is an entertaining action film. And it's great to see Liam totally slumming for a paycheck. This director... he may turn out to be great, but he's definitely a graduate of the Luc Besson Franco-Hollywood Movie Factory Academy. That's both good and bad.

    by cobra--kai

Ah, this is well-timed. We were actually having a pretty decent discussion about this guy in the CLASH OF THE TITANS tb couple of days ago. To sum up that conversation...
Pierre Morel to direct next Bond movie!
A great director of exciting and dramatic action scenes without resorting to horrible quick-cut editing, plus some classy staging of dialogue scenes mark this guy out as a talent to watch imho.
If anyone remotely involved in the Bond franchise is reading this then please slip a note under Cubby Broccolis door with 'Pierre Morel' written on it. After QOS we need 007 back on track.

I rented TAKEN on Blu last week and thoroughly enjoyed it. Maybe if i'd have made the trip to the theatre i'd have expected something 'bigger' for my buck, but for home viewing i'd certainly recommend it.
It's quite an intimate film with a strong central performance and a couple of the best shot action sequences that i've seen this decade. That's my personal take.

    by bringingsexyback

I certainly appreciate a good revenge flick with throat chops. I mean, shit, I was watching the Last House On The Left remake last week and got teh bloodlust when Tony Goldwyn and his wife were shoving the perp's hand into the garbage disposal. I almost came.

But LHOTL was superior because it operated on many levels. It built suspense. It had long, taut scenes that built up the characters. It made you care about the good guys, who they were and you want them to get their revenge because they loved their daughter and you felt what they felt. You want the bad guys to die violently because you saw how evil they were.

Taken, though, cared nothing about characterization. It went straight for the action and not for one second did I believe Neeson was a spy. The things he did were so stupid you wonder if he would even graduate from the police academy.

I would highly recommend LHOTH over Taken any time, for anyone wanting to see a revenge genre flick.

The trailer sold me but good. And yeah, I was anxious to see Neeson as a father who is after the guys who done stole his little girl. But what a mess it was. I just couldn't get over the stupidity in this character's actions and the lazy plot holes. It COULD have been so much better. But alas.

I have no idea if Taken is good sober, but with half a bottle of wine and a six of Sam Adams in me, it was sublime insanity. And The International was great, Hobo. Another reason I think Taken gels with audiences.

    by hobocode

It came out right after his wife died so tragically and people just wanted to root for the guy, even if it was just him playing a fictional character. Taken was perfect for that becasue it was personal for Neeson's charcter and he was such a badass. It's nice to see the goodguy hold all the cards sometimes.

And that shootout, good christ that shootout.Hobo, the Hurt Locker came out on DVD at my place months ago. Another superb movie. And yet another one I watched with beer and wine although it required neither to be enjoyed.I'll also nominate Street Fighter as one of the preeminent gems of the year if for no other reason that it gave us Chris Klein in one the best "so bad it's good" performances ever. He shined that turd into 90 minutes of hysterical goodness. And you guessed it, I was three sheets to the wind with that one as well.

I think Harry did? Yeah he did. The last Tinker Bell CG film annoyed the shit out of me. I think it was the notion of giving Tink an origin – and a voice. That said, this was much much much better. I put this on while Yoko and I were cleaning for a party – and it absolutely stopped Yoko dead in her tracks. She’s a “Disney Princess Geek” and it hypnotized her. How’d it play for me? Well, it has a story, the graphics are kinda beautiful… and the battle with the rats is kinda scary and downright creepy. If you have a daughter, do not even hesitate in picking this up. They’ll love it.

Man I got a netflix film in a couple weeks ago

    by series7

Wolfhound, it looked like the last guy used it as a coaster for a Big Mac. It was all greasy and sticky. Put it underwater and luckily it worked fine. I've gotten some broken disc before.

...I kinda loved WOLFHOUND, and I had to clean it...

    by flickapoo

...with Windex to get it to play. Granted, there was a split second of nipple in the movie, but there is NO reason for it to have been so sticky.I wish it hadn't tried to go all big and LOTR at the end and it was nearly incomprehensible...but I sort of loved it.

    Taken is awesome.

Neeson is badass, the movie really gets moving and keeps the momentum. Anyone know when FROM PARIS WITH LOVE comes out? I know it's scenery-chewing Travolta, but I'll still see it

Sorry brizz, but that's a fake.

I thought it would be, 'cause as far as I know, they haven't started making it yet.

The few seconds I watched were from the other X-Men movies with the Batman music on top. It's nicely put together, but fake.

Just saw GI Joe. Looked like a halloween party. Taken is overrated. Series 7 said it best. District 9, best film of the year. Though, my favorite of the year and one I will be seeing most in the future was INGLORIOUS.
