    Second season was disappointing

Hope this one is a return to form, though these two aren't exactly on their way to the oscars any time soon

    agreed about season 2

    by therootstheroots

i was hoping for some tense shit and heart stopping moments [now getting them via breaking bad, which has really spoilt my tv drama watching], basically ellen going on a kamikaze mission to bring patty down, but i thought it never did reach that potential. The finale was a let down.

season 2 was a bit naff

    by thegoldbergv

the acting is great, the writing is mostly good, but in the 1st season there was a reason for the flashback/forward structure, the 2nd season was just a big tease ending in Ellen shooting a camera. Not exactly riveting.

Keith Carradine and Lily Tomlin will also take part.S2 was a let down, especially compared to S1. Still ranks as one of the better shows on TV, though.

    Season 2... didn't finish it.

    by v'shael

I still have the episodes, but I gave up watching around episode 7 or so. It just didn't hold my attention. Really a shame after Season 1. I devoured that in one massive 13 hour session. It was fucking brilliant.

    Season 3

    by canuck815

will probably be starting in mid-January.

I was a bit disappointed in Season 2 as well. I'll still watch though. Whenever Patti Hewes goes on a rampage it's gold (like telling that cougar she would "rip her face off").

    Thought season 2 was fantastic...

    by danielkurland

I don't understand why this show isn't included amongst the ranks of Mad Men and Breaking Bad. The episode with Uncle Pete fucking up and how he chooses to handle it all at the end is just one example of some awesome stuff in season 2. The whole Patty/Ellen confrontation at the end of the season is just pure acting. And there's a phenomenal callback with Frobisher, going back to season 1, when he orders Katie Connor to be killed. I thought season 2 was just as good as season 1, with my only problem being that William Hurt got WAY too much screentime when the season started.

The confrontation at the end of season 2 (SPOILERS)...

    by danielkurland

What I loved so much about it, is when you see the premiere, you're like, okay, it's got to be Ellen shooting Patty, but that's TOO obvious; it can't be that simple. So you think there's other people in the room, or some catch around all of this. But when it happens, it IS just Ellen and Patty, and they told you the entire time. But it's great because Patty is dying at the time, but it's got nothing to do with Ellen at all.

All the cutting back & forth got tiresome

    by i am_notreal

It was OK, even interesting at first, but every episode was stretching it. I hung in until about the halfway point, and then got distracted, somehow missed an episode, and couldn't re-focus. Some I'm not really sure what happened in the end, but from what I heard, I didn't miss that much. It was pretty cool for awhile, but just couldn't sustain my interest.

    They need to rework it

    by canuck815

If they are going to do the whole 'time-jump' thing once again this season they need to look back and see what made Season 1's so successful. Probably one of my favourite seasons of television.

For those that didn't watch Season 2 I'd still say it's worth it. I actually really enjoyed Marcia Gay Harden's character once she came out of her shell and embraced the slut.

    No doubt

    by the mcpoyle clan

there were some good moments in S2, but overall, it wasn't as compelling. Hurt didn't add much, and Kendrick couldn't compare to Frobisher. Casting the SNL guy was just weird, along with the producer playing one of the feds. Never seen Trauma, so I know nothing about her character, but hearing the actress who plays Katie speak in her native tongue throws one for a loop at first.

True the second season wasn't as good as the first, but still it was very good. I'm looking forward to see where they go with the characters this season. Hopefully they will be as evil and ruthless as ever.

one of the biggest complaints about S1 was the time jumping. It rewarded those who paid attention, but turned off the casual viewers, so they watered it down for S2, which didn't work as well.

I gave up half way in season two. Can't pinpoint why, but I just lost interest. I give this series kudos for interesting casting (Darrell Hammond as a hitman?), though, and it looks to continue that streak with Campbell Scott and Martin Short. Does Short act dramatically by giving us the "Jerry Lewis sucking on a sourball look"?

Part of why I loved season 1 is BECAUSE you had to pay attention

    by sydbarretsmydad

Some of my favorite shows would easily lose the casual viewer. Season 1 of The Wire would make most people I know duck out of the room......but to me having to rewind because you thought you lost your way made it EASILY my favorite season of television ever.

    Season 2

    by tomdolan04

didn't hit the heights of season 1 but was well worth it. Here's hoping season 3 doesn't rely on the time-jumping narrative structure and pushes forward something new. It's a great show with potential to hit classic with great actors and actresses aplenty - plus season 1 demonstrated they weren't going for lowest common denominator as one talkbacker said, you had to pay attention.

That said Season 1 of 24 and many others start that way before descending into paraody and formula.

    Season One was fantastic

    by veritasses

The writing and editing for S1 were first rate. How they managed to jump around the timeline, yet keep the mysteries, tension, momentum and twists all together is beyond me. One of the best constructed/crafted stories I've seen in a long time. An amazing technical achievement.

But what made the show so compelling was that absolutely everything, from the different plot lines, characters and flashbacks etc all centered around Ellen. It was watching the slow, compounding destruction of every part of her perfect life, all the while knowing that it was going to eventually lead us to a horrible fate (which we learn from the very first moment) that hooked you into the show. The focus around her single character hightened the drama ten fold. The flashbacks, which are so hard to use effectively, were used as a great device here. It was just brilliant stuff. Plus the casting, directing, lighting music etc were all well done and of course Glenn Close was outstanding.

Season two had way too many irrelevent characters and side stories that didn't really serve a higher objective. It had no focus and there really wasn't anything compelling to sustain any sort of momentum. It had a good cast though and a few moments here and there made for great TV but it was certainly a big let down.

I was hoping season two would be a role reversal of sorts. Have everything focused on Patty and watch the protege slowly lay the traps and tighten the noose to destroy the now vulnerable but still formidable Patty Hughes. It would've been an epic "master vs apprentice" sort of battle. They appeared to set everything up for that at the end of season one so I was sure that was the direction they were going to take. It was a big waste of the situations and circumstances they had taken so much care to create in S1...

They've assembled another strong cast for S3 but it sounds like it's going to be more of a conventional thriller like S2. Too bad if that's the case. They're clearly capable of so much more.

    by tomdolan04

I see what you're saying and as I said I enjoyed season 2 - but season 1 wasn't "event" storytelling either yet was ultimately more satisfying.

The slow build of season 2 was fantastic, just found the payoff of the Patty/Ellen confrontation not as rewarding as it should have been.

    Love this show

    by mr_sinister

I thought both seasons were great even though the first was generally superb. The final scene of that and the song that played as Ellen walked off the pier... excellent. The second I still found compelling and more intriguing than most dramas. It dealt with threads from season one quite nicely, as Xen11 mentioned. I look forward to rewatching it on DVD - released here at the end of the month. Patty is unmatched when it comes to getting angry. The scene where she flips out at her husband was also great. Can't wait to see what season 3 will be like... The new additions are interesting, but I hope they don't just drop Timothy Olyphant or Marcia Gay Harden. It was such a contrast to see her recently in Whip It and then remember her being all sultry and sexed up in Damages.

has his own new show, but I hope there is more to see of his relationship with Ellen. The reruns of S1 remind me of something else that made it great, Ray Fiske.
