Alexander Payne + George Clooney = THE DESCENDANTS?
Ahoy, squirts! Quint here. A new project from Alexander Payne is always worth getting excited about especially when George Clooney is rumored to be circling the lead.
There's something about Payne's dry comedy that really gets me and thinking of what Clooney's amiable laid back style humor could look like in one of Payne's flicks makes THE DESCENDANTS all the more appealing to me.
The flick centers on a man who takes his two daughters on a search to find his wife's lover in a bid to save his family unit. Of course no one-line description could sum up a Payne movie... man and his buddy find love while wine-tasting, old dude loses his wife and has to find his own meaning in life, evil high school girl fucks teacher and makes his life a living hell... well, maybe that one is pretty good, but you know what I mean.
THE DESCENDANTS is at Fox Searchlight one of the last and best indie-studios out there... and I know the concept of an indie-studio is an oxymoron, but when you compare their output to, say. 20th Century Fox's usual output you'll understand what I mean. The whole story is at Variety!

I'm not familiar with the novel but Payne and Taylor have yet to make a bad film.

I'm with you on Perotta's last few novels, but he did manage a great collection of short stories called "Bad Haircut," about growing up in the 70s. (We now return to our regularly scheduled cock 'n boobs discussion...)

Devastatingly, but hilarious view

Laura Dern gives what should have been an oscar-winning performance in this satire of the abortion controversy. However this movie is not for the main stream. She plays a homeless drug user and a user period. Not a nice person. She has four kids in three different places. The first scene depicts her trying to hit up her ex for money displaying only a token concern for her kids. But by the end of the movie you kinda like her (well, almost... you still would never let her come to your house). Anyway when she is picked up for the 16th time that year by the cops for sniffing household stuff (anything she can find: glue, paint, brake fluid...), the authorities find out that she is pregnant. The DA charges her with criminal endangerment of the fetus, but hints that if she has an abortion the charge will go away. While in the city jail she meets up with the Baby Savers and a tug-of-war ensues between them and the Right-To-Choose people. The portrayal of both sides is so devastatingly accurate that I doubt either side would know they're being lampooned. This movie rates with Cold Turkey and Drop Dead Gorgeous for its cynical, but hilarious portrait of American Life. -

Election was a long time ago.
Sideways was no better than an overlong episode of Fraiser and the guy wrote "I Now Pronounce You Chuck and Larry".
That sums it up. -
Reese Witherspoon did not fuck Matthew Broderick in that movie. She fucked his buddy.

Somebody beat me to it, but he's right: student did not fuck teacher and make his life a living hell in 'Election'. Also, it's a bit of a stretch to call Tracy Flick evil. She's no more evil than Matthew Broderick.

He lobbied hard for the sidekick to Paul Giamatti. The Thomas Haden Church role bytheway. But Payne didn't want to go w/ somebody so famous.
