NYTimes: Comcast May Control NBC Universal By Next Week!!!!
I am – Hercules!!
The New York Times reported Sunday that GE and Comcast reached on Friday a tentative agreement to sell 51% of NBC Universal to Comcast, and that the deal could be completed by next week.
Word is Comcast is likely to then keep the NBCU-owned cable channels and sell off the NBC broadcast network and its owned & operated stations to a third party. Other components of NBC Universal include film studio Universal Pictures, TV production company NBC Universal Media and broadcast network Telemundo.
Comcast operates cable-TV systems as well as cable channels E!, G4, Style, Versus, AZN, The Golf Channel, The Comcast Network (formerly CN8), and SportsNet.
NBCU’s cable channels include USA, Bravo, Syfy, Oxygen, CNBC, MSNBC, Universal HD, Chiller, Sleuth, and The Weather Channel.

I'm not saying I work there, but... I work there.
-
and getting rid of NBC, the network, and its stations?
-
but he's probably already used to it by now
-
Heroes is probably gone, but G4 carries the first run Heroes on Tuesday. I would expect Leno is gone or will be given notice. Law and Order has bad numbers, so that is gone. We will see more NBC stuff on the other networks and more reality show booking. As a directv guy, I guess it won't matter, because they will block it they block everything else.
-
NBC Broadcast Net could get dumped twice inside a month?? Holy sinking ship Batman... I feel sorry for the "third party" that lands this network in the current condition its in. I'm most intrigued by the storyline impact on 30 Rock.
-
Viya con Dios, Sheinhardt Wig Company.
-
NYT is blocking the story so we can't get the depth here. For those of us who get nauseated thinking about how much control Comcast already has on TV content -possibly radio too I think- tell us what this means. Will we notice a difference in what we see, or is this more of a subtle long term complexion thing, or will we notice any change at all?
-
Comcast has too much control over the media now, if this deal goes thru, what's next?
-
Is it weird that the first thing i thought when i read this was that? I imagine the season finale is pretty much gonna be an easy write. Will Jack stay with microwaves or accept a full time job with comcast and stay with NBC.
-
increasingly clueless twat who shall remain nameless to finally make that movie which I won't mention.
-
And get someone that's actually funny on NBC.
-
Seriously? They could make 5 more shitty sequels to Terminator and more people would watch them than anything Whedon has ever done, other than Toy Story.
-
Has anyone thought of that? I mean anyone who's in business can see this could be a goldmine for entertainment. The secret is just give the fans what they want. Not what they think they should have.
-
but I actually have no idea what that means.
-
I read the article in the hardcopy NYT early this morning and never thought of that.Alos, maybe we'll get a new BSG TV movie or spin off series other than CAPRICA.
-
Heroes: sometime between 7-11 pm
30 Rock: sometime between 6pm - 12 am, but may not show up at all
NBC News: sometime between 4-8 pm -
i can only pray that their abhorrent standards for customer service and hatred of the customer do not carry over to the programming itself. see comcastmustdie.com for more info
-
Since Comcast is clearly reaching for more entertainment product, it is highly likely that Universal Pictures will ratchet up film production under Comcast.
-
... content distributors owning the production side? That's a bad, bad, bad, bad world. It's like AMC Theatres owning Paramount (and don't get me started on their tie-in with the MPAA).

there is no reason to hope for improvements in syphy, etc, based on their vast experience with running high quality program/content channels. We can hope they don't screw them up further, that they rescind the stupid 'syfy' branding, and boot some of the useless management (but this would likely be replaced with less experienced useless management)What is most interesting about this to me is that the cable portion of NBCU is the only one really producing and/or airing any original scripted hourlongs of any merit. Broadcast NBC has utterly failed at this, and with next sell off, will be completely severed from the division that at least understands the concept of scripted hourlongs, and is not afraid of them.More puzzling still is that GE is not selling Comcast just what it wants, and selling the other part separately. They must REALLY want to unload this pile fast, before Comcast figures out the limited value of the thing--Comcast will likely lose money on the reselling of the broadcast portion.....

Actually, it could be that GE insists that Comcast buy all of it
by chromedome
If CC wants the "good" part, they have to suck it up and buy the useless portion too. Maybe no one would buy the broadcast portion any other way (and CC will have a hard time finding a buyer, unless they heavily discount it and take a loss).
-
Is anyone else concerned at what other channels will now suddenly become "too expensive" for DirecTV to offer subscribers? We've already lost Versus and Comcast Sportsnet, what next?
Funny how CrapCast offers their stuff to FIOS at a fair affordable rate but sticks it to us DirecTV'ers with limitations on channels. It's murder for a Philly sports fan. -

That one is about $20 more and gives you Netflix streaming capability. I'd swap that link out if I were you. -
Maybe it is a must-carry locally. Because baseball, basketball, and hockey are all on CSN Bay Area.
-
Comcast took TechTV and turned it into G4. I simply can't wait to see unbelievably huge amount of retarded content Comcast will shit into the airwaves. Imagine every NBCU channel spewing forth programming schedules that make SyFy's look like PBS.
-
That would hurt WWE too much. Especially considering Smackdown isn't widely availble on it already.
-
in other words, it sucks.
-
when one same company controls production and output. It's about all that's being left in the entertainment industry. oh, and fuck Comcast. They've got shitty service and rates.

Tonight's episode was mid-Season 1 cool. Not quite as game-changing as they could have gone (could have been a complete reboot with the Sylar/Hiro revisit), and I would have liked to see the ramifications of his actions played out a little more, but since he was dragged back to the present and immediately made to be subservient to the carnival peeps, perhaps we just haven't seen the changes yet. Let's also hope that closing shot is Mohinder's swan song...
-
Who has a better handle on the pulse of the local affiliates - a company that makes lightbulbs, nuclear plants, windmills, and MRI machines like General Electric, or a cable company like Comcast?
Comcast will give Leno his walking papers. -
Why this episode is three years late is crazy. Charlie's reaction at the end following up Noah's revolation is absolutly perfect. And Noah's followup. Awesome!
-
It's like cable access for former CEOs.
-
And they wouldn't pull the trigger. They still think Quinto is the solution, when in fact he's the Triple H of Heroes. Someone who's been pushed to the moon for a couple years longer than he should have.
-
in any manner than 'we need to talk, Adrian.'
-
And everybody ignored it then too? Nobody thinks your wrasslin' analogies are cute, quirky or relevant. "Quinto is as important as something that everybody could give a flying flip about 10 years ago--er--20 years ago--er--30 years ago--40 years ago." Pick a generation's wrestling persona and the rest of the world could care less. Your analysis is childish and meant to impress the stupid hacks that only a sorry sack like you would even concider being a rally monkey for. Did you see that, I mentioned the Rally Monkey. SO many more people would get a rally monkey -- not to mention appreciate it more than your stupid metaphor of WEE.
-
This won't end well. Best Case Scenario: NBC fixes its shit and renews Kings, gives Journeyman another shot, axes Heroes and Leno, creates wildly original series. Makes "SyFy" awesome again but doesn't fuck with the SG or BSG/Caprica franchises. Makes Eureka cool again (and watchable). Doesn't fuck with White Collar. Worst case scenario: I don't watch half as much TV anymore.
-
Nah, G4's awesome all by itself. Jimbojones123 is right, though, tonight's Heroes ep was easily it's best since "Cold Snap" - so why no talkback? Maybe Herc's saving up server space for Supernatural.
-
but we'll still get 24 hours of Aliens on AMC.

...as its best villains do.
With Samuel AKA T-Bag, "Heroes" has a grade-A quality villain, with just enough performative pathos to wring out some interest and sympathy. He's not an over-the-top monster like Sylar, a cold-as-ice schemer like the various Company men, or a just plain son-of-a-bitch like Adam Munroe or Nathan were at times. He's a shady character up to bad things, but for a reasonable reason-- to protect his own kind, at any cost. So far he's a damn good carnified version of Magneto, and I hope we see him develop further as the season (and hopefully series) develops further.
I will say this, though-- we need a wee bit explanation for how he knows EVERYTHING ABOUT EVERYBODY before he actually MEETS them. It's cool, and it definitely lends an Issac Mendes-esque coherence to the bullshit (cool to see him return in that quick-cameo/repurposed-footage), but we need an explanation for the nonsense of his and Lydia's magical omniscient tattoo-parlor. -
Seeing as NBC is in last place.
-
...Comcast will die by my hands. I'm sure they won't do anything drastic at first, but I'm nervous.
-
Good writing and a well thought out time travel story. It made me think of the good old days in the 1rst season!

The emotional content, which was often lacking in seasons 2 and 3, made up for the occasional gaffes (Elle and Noah knew what Sylar looked like when they first monitored him, so Noah telling Isaac they don't know what Sylar looks like doesn't make sense). Nobody here was a hero or a villain: Hiro is selfish, Samuel has reasons for what he does and regrets what they force him to do. And they use a cliffhanger to actually pique the audience's interest for the next episode.

If he's not working one place, another will snatch him up. Its not like he wouldn't be able to find a job on TV.

Because if Sons of Anarchy was canceled, I'd be seriously pissed. 2nd best show on television behind Madmen.
Why is it that the least watched shows are always the best? Rome, The Wire, Madmen, and now Sons. -

Fire any on-air talent that's worth anything (and therefore has a salary greater than $10-an-hour) and cancel any shows that are remotely watchable (because they have a budget larger than a 2-year-old's weekly allowance). MSNBC will become K3 and SyFy will become B4 (because renaming TechTV to something incoherent and undescriptive of it's content like G4 was such a masterful stroke of intelligence).
It’d be better if GE just pulled the plug and walked away rather than let it’s channels be gutted by Comcast. -
is it my imagination, or are you replying to something that no one said?
-
only means one thing -- the viewing public loses.

they are like health insurance companies.

A cable provider is now buying a major network. Controlling both the content and the transport medium. Shouldn't this violate anti-trust? True, I fucking HATE Comcast but this is some seriously jacked up news. What wills top them from charging a fortune to Direct TV or U-verse to carry NBC-Universal channels?
Horrible, HORRIBLE, news. -
So that's at least safe.
-
This statement is has no substance. It's just your opinion :" there is no reason to hope for improvements in syphy, etc, based on their vast experience with running high quality program/content channels. "
The truth is we really don't know what it'll bring. But one can hope for positive changes can't one? -
First of all: I was floored a major TV show actually dropped a Chrono Trigger reference (for those who missed it, after "future" Hiro says she was MJ to his Spidey, past Hiro says "or like Marle to my Chrono"). Besides that, great episode with a good payoff. I wasn't expecting "Evil Butterfly Man" to do what he did with Charlie. There's a small part of me that makes me think he might be lying to Hiro...what if he literally buried her with his earth powers? That would be pretty cruel. But "Where in time is Charlie San Diego?" could be a useful reason for Hiro to time travel to different eras as he tries to figure out where she might be. Imagine the episodes you could get out of that: Hiro finds a painting of Charlie from the 19th century, only to find out that the artist was copying a statue of her made during the Renaissance, which in turn was copied from an old Roman statue, etc. A clue hunt through time! That could at least buy them a season's worth of busywork for Hiro.
-
When the so-called "major death" rumour came out the one character I thought it couldn't be referring to was Nathan. He's already seemingly died, or been in critical condition, and gotten better, enough times that his impending doom has become as predictable as a mole in CTU. Plus, Nathan IS dead. The character died last season. The actor is just a form the character of Sylar takes on. I sincerely doubt Nathan is the "major death" that's supposed to be coming. If he is, it'll be about as surprising as Christmas Day this year falling on December 25th.
-
rating/share, respectively. Tentative series-low after modest gains the past 3 weeks. We'll find out more when the final numbers are released late this afternoon.
-
Time Warner owns WB (now part of CW), HBO, CNN, and several other cable channels . . . plus, they own a cable company. The difference is that Time Warner doesn't put it's acquisitions through a shredder and destroy what they buy.
-
It'll be very interesting to see what type of management changes are made across the broad spectrum. Such hires will signal the direction Comcast will take so I, for one, will be paying close attention. Since this is a content motivated decision, my hunch is that Comcast will be doing some major moves on the creative and production side to reverse content scarcity. With digital cable and broadband, there remains substantial space to fill and IMHO this moves shows that they are not completely satisfied with current conditions.
-
Clearly, Comcast will have to use Time Warner as a model if this investment is going to succeed. For all purposes, Comcast is entering Time Warner's world now and although they will bring their own long term strategy and plans, Comcast must adapt to the basics of what works in this areana if they are planning to win.
-
They will be casting their cum all over everybody's face. Get ready for a ketchup ring around your ass when they power boost a load from their giant black Lex Steele cock.
Prices are already going up again in November. Comcrap is trying to take over everything. Now you have to have a box for every TV unless it has a QAM tuner/digital. They won the the authority to encrypt their digital signal to prevent that. It's a matter of time that ALL TVs will need a box. You get 2adapters free now, all others are $2 a month.
They want you to rent their gear. The adapters will eventually go up to $3 then $4. These adapters don't pick up the digital packages. Only the basics. You need to rent a standard digital box at $7 a month or a DVR at $16 and some up to $25 a month.
Their lowest internet is $40 a month without TV service, 1mbps. $25 if you buy their TV service. $43 for 6mbps with TV or $58 without TV.
Don't know if AT&T's U-Verse is a good service, but it offers WAY more then Comcrap and is cheaper.

I'm off to check into AT&T's U-Verse. Thanks for the tip, RBlowout

Immediately, before the whole network goes down in even bigger flames then it already is.

The numbers I quote from are via Mediaweek.com, and their Programming Insider daily column. The final numbers are updated on Mediaweek's message boards by Travis Yanan, sometime around 6 or 7PM ET. So I stand by the preliminary 3.2/6 overall rating as a series-low. That will change, up or down, I have no idea right now. The current series low is from the 10/5 episode 'Acceptance' (3.3/5 household rating, 5.46m viewers, and 2.4/6 in the demo.
-
They have like three HD stations.
-
is this good news??
-
They run G4, their version of SyFy. The crown jewel of the deal is USA, and if Comcast gets their hands on it, who knows what will happen. I could see them cancelling Burn Notice and Law and Order:CI, replacing them with lame reality shows brought over from G4 or their other channel "E!". God knows what they would do to MSNBC, CNBC,CNBC World, and Weather Channel. Though Weather Channel may be an improvement from what NBC has done to it in the last 12 months. All this is speculation, because I don't think the Obama Admin., through the Federal regulations of corporate mergers, would allow MSNBC to be owned by Comcast, a company who is conservative, and in many markets keeps FOX News and CNN in the bare bones basic package, while having MSNBC as part of a "you need a cable box" package. After all, MSNBC is the Obama Admin.'s favorite news channel.----later-----m
-
Hmm conservatives buying up MSNBC and looking to change their liberal programming?
-
with a few alterations. Would have made the fans happy.
-
I have Comcast and they have a lot more than 3 HD stations. Maybe you haven't looked lately. A lot more.
-
Comcast wants to control the broadband and Hulu had to be taken care of and since NBC owns a controlling share of Hulu....comcast will be pushing for it to be a full fledged pay service faster than the schedule it is already on.
-
This could be the most satisfying season yet.
