There’s now every likelihood Fox’s “Bones” – which has bounced between 2.7 and 3.0 in 18-49 this season – will push ABC’s sci-fi drama into third place at 8 p.m. when it returns. * “Leno” hit a new Thursday low. The only show on the Big Five networks pulling a lower 18-49 than “The Jay Leno Show” on Thursday nights is The CW’s “Supernatural,” now just a tenth of a point lower. * “The Jeff Dunham Show” imploded in its second week, plummeting from a 2.2 to a 1.0 in 18-49. That could be the worst one-week drop all season. * “The Mentalist” for the first time tied “Private Practice” in 18-49 at 10 p.m. In total viewers, the CBS drama is way ahead of the ABC drama 15.5 million to 9.1 million. * The CW’s top show, “The Vampire Diaries,” is closing in on NBC, and close to moving from fifth place to fourth place at 8 p.m. * A key reason The CW didn’t overtake NBC at 8 p.m. is “Community’s” Batman-infused Halloween episode posted its best 8 p.m. rating to date. * “Vampire” tied “Parks and Recreation” in 18-49 at 8:30, though “Parks” remains well ahead in total viewers. * FX’s “Sunny” hit a season low. “The League” had a miserable kickoff. pretty soon they won't be listing Leno's numbers in points

    by Magic Rat

they'll just list the names of everyone who tuned in: Jack, Simon, Joan, ect.

    Yay for Community

    by Burgundy82

Probably the best episode so far. So glad it's getting some AiCN support. I'm utterly fucking baffled about the low "Sunny" numbers though. It's been fantastic this season.

But it'll bounce back. Though The League looks like another FX one season comedy wonder.

    Haha Jesus I'm dense

    by Burgundy82

That makes perfect sense. I wish they would've factored in the viewers who caught the rebroadcast an hour later.

I loved Chevy Chase, as The Beastmaster, in the episode.

    by Jamie McBain

"I'm The Beastmaster, from the film The Beastmaster." The Batmaan spoof, especially good with gravely voice, pretty much downpat.

    Flashforward

    by NudeandAroused

Not so sure about this. If it is a one and done show, then fine. But, it is really moving slow.

Nothing fucking happens in Flashforward until the LAST 5 MINUTES

And what the hell was the point of Dominic's character last night? To fuck that chick?? Even he'd rather be banging away then to take part in this damn sow.

    I've defended Flashforward

    by ThrowMeTheIdol

But I've pretty much given up on it now. It's just so badly written that while I'm watching it I feel sorry for the actors. Except for Fiennes who is so bad in his role that even if it was written well he'd suck. Walger is good though, and whoever that is playing the Benford's nanny is going places. The camera loves her.<p> Which raises a question... if your'e a couple worried about eventually breaking up, wouldn't you fire the smoking hot nanny?

Anyone notice how crazy the NBC eps were last night?

    by iamnicksaicnsn

30Rock and Community had some really batshit crazy stuff going on. Especially 30Rock, with the subtle and not so subtle placement of Kenneth in different costumes in his home town. They subtly placed Ken in last weeks ep too, so I think they're playing some sort of Where's Waldo? with him.

  • Oct. 30, 2009, 8:33 p.m. CST

Flashforward was actually pretty good this time

    by CherryValance

That whole business at the house was a great scene. I think the problem is that they think we're interested in these people's fates and they haven't given us a real reason to be. I do think that Dominic Monaghan being in it for real now signals a turn for the better. At least I hope so.

    @iamnicksaicnsn

    by Incomplete Gamer

Kenneth as different people made sense in last night's 30 Rock. The idea was that they were going to "real America," which Liz Lemon turned her nose up to. She sees these simpletons as nothing more than Kenneth. At least, that's what I took from the episode.

  • Oct. 30, 2009, 9:03 p.m. CST

Thats one of the things I love about 30 Rock

    by gooseud

It doesnt even attempt to hide or sugar coat its open, no-remorse contempt for Middle America. Which is a good thing IMHO.

Question: how are the Fox football overruns calculated?

    by growltiger

Is it the total national audience? So that means the West Coast, which is an afternoon sample plus the East Coast which edges into prime time plus everyone in between, right? What makes this complicated (for me) is that we are talking about different programming. So the left coast will be viewing popular western teams and the right coast will load up on the eastern teams. It is not like everyone is viewing the same programming.

  • Oct. 30, 2009, 9:25 p.m. CST

Do these #'s factor in a DVR?

    by MacReady452

I would think that Big Brother is checking up on what I'm recording. Just cause I didn't watch Sunny at it's normal time doesn't mean it isn't the most important show on TV. Fuck America.

  • Oct. 30, 2009, 10:31 p.m. CST

    FlashForward was horrid yet again.

    by CatVutt

Honestly, what a retarded show. That ridiculous shift from "OMG I WOULD NEVER CHEAT ON YOU" to "Yeah, this isn't working, you're a lying shmuck and maybe our marriage is over" wasn't even Daytime Soap level writing. Of all the potential plotlines/situations that you could mine from a worldwide crisis...THIS is the shit they thought would be interesting?!?!?

  • Oct. 30, 2009, 10:42 p.m. CST

    I Agree, FlashForward was Horrid

    by Crow3711

That scene in the kitchen you speak of CatVutt was utterly baffling. How can these people not possibly even discuss the idea that splitting up is what makes him drink, and if they just stay together then none of it will happen. Her complete switch to wanting the marriage over was both unrealistic and implies she now wants her FlashForward to come true. To not even bring that up is offensive. This whole show is full of situations like this. The writing is so sad. Besides that scene, the first scene with Charlie, on the train, where he tried to explain some science mumbo jumbo with the chicks hand closed made no sense whatsoever and I couldn't even pay attention. When LOST talks sceience its always engaging, to the point, fascinating, and with a sense of humor. This was just fucking nonsense. They are just trying way too hard.

FF needs to kill the fate/no fate thing pronto

    by Domi'sInnerChild

It's lame at this point. We get it, each week you make it look like one character will escape their fate and another seems doomed to experience it. Then you switch it up the following week. If somebody REALLY wanted to know, just kill any person that appears in your flash forward. Or maybe not that extreme, just do something that can't be undone. Send a pet to China, cut off a finger, get a tattoo. If one fricking person did this, they'd be on every talk show and then everybody would know if the future could be changed or not and we wouldn't have to listen to them pout about it for 50 minutes of the hour every week.

Community was great, Flash Forward was boring.

    by AnnoyYou

The problem with Flash Forward is that it is far too portentous and entirely without humor. This is only the second episode I've seen and it did absolutely nothing to dispel my original opinion of it: too dull, too heavy, a huge waste of great actors (Fiennes, Cho, Davenport, Vance and the girl who I will forever think of as Penny on Lost). Community, however, hit a season high - everyone was hilarious, the writing was excellent and the cast is really coming together as a very snappy unit. It's one of the few pleasures of this really crappy network TV season.

  • Oct. 31, 2009, 2:44 a.m. CST

    I can't deal with Community.

    Defying Gravity

    by BlackRab

I really don't get ABC. They promoted FlashForward down our throats and it's not even that great of a show and they barely promoted Defying Gravity which I felt was much better than FlashForward. They cancelled Defying Gravity because of the low ratings but how can you expect a show to have high ratings if you barely promote it ? Also, why were they so quick to destroy the sets of Defying Gravity ?

Okay, Ive never heard of a show called Defying Gravity, so Black Rab may have a point. <br><br> As for the Fate thing in FF (which I haven't watched myself), do they know the date that everyone jumped to in the future? Or did everyone jump to different times? With a set date and free will, any circumstances glimpsed would be easy to avoid. And as noted above, easy enough to verify that the future could be changed, provided you recognized the location you were in... Simply destroy aspects of the environment you were in. Redecorate and repaint the room, cut down the trees you saw, get a really noticable tattoo on your hand. That might not be as unalterable of a change as murder or something, but it's not like things are going to coincidentally revert to the way they looked in a person's vision... <br><br> while the general idea of FF is fun to think about, the whole reason I've never watched the show was that it really doesn't seem at as sustainable as the premise of an ongoing series...

30 Rock's contempt for middle Amer.?

    by BizarroJerry

Considering how completely absurd they make those jokes, I don't think we can honestly say we're seeing some true opinions. It was more making fun of certain elitist people's almost condescending attitude that those areas of the country are better and "more real". But the show isn't saying NY, etc, is any better. Liz's message seems to be that people suck everywhere.<p>Personally, I like that this show seems to not only mock both conservatives and liberals, but also seem to parody their opinions of each other.

    Flashforward Novel vs. Show (Spoilers)

    by AngrySnowMonkey

I enjoyed the Novel more than I am enjoying the show. The novel put the focus on the scientists that caused the flashforwards and emphasized the pre-determined destiny aspect from their viewpoint. In my opinion, it was much more interesting seeing the scientific mind deal with thoughts of guilt and destiny vs. an alcoholic cop and an ER nurse. Also, the novel flashed ahead 20 years and not 6 months. The 6 month thing leaves me scrathing my head, as I think a longer time period makes for more drama. But I guess you run the risk of making the flashforwards look to Jetson-like?

  • Oct. 31, 2009, 10:14 a.m. CST

    A Few More Flashforward Complaints

    by AngrySnowMonkey

A few more things that bug me. The show seems to be progressing to where the focus is on the investigation into the cause of the flashforward. However, we are led to believe that millions of people across the planet have died because of it. I would think that FBI agents and ER doctors would be consumed with trying to restore some basic order to civilization and not focused on who-screwed-who or who-drank-what 6 months into the future.

Supernatural is ten times better than shows like Fringe or Lost. The writers actually knew where the story was going from season 1. Anyone not watching it because they think it's for fat 13 year old girls is missing out on some solid genre TV.

    Fringe Problems

    by AngrySnowMonkey

First, let me say that I prefer this show to Flashforward and those Stargate shows featuring McGruber/McGyver. But I think this show runs the risk of getting caught up in its own mythology and becoming boring. The shows closest know relative, the X files, was ultimately undone by this. The show could use a few more stand-alone episodes and get away from the other dimension/Spock stuff.

nothing happened again. Wahhhhh space bugs are drinking our water.<p>Here's my imitation of the writer's room of SGU: "Quick get me a Ron Moore BSG script that Stargate Universe can "homage" from." By "homage" I mean blatantly steal from. Good lord they aren't even trying to hide it.<p> On the the other hand Dr.Chen from ER is still mucho humpable. What the fuck role does LDP play? He's there one episode then gone. Also the fat happy Rodeny Mckay character is just stupid.

Actually, AngrySnowMonkey, Fringe's biggest problem is using the X-Files monster of the week approach instead of focusing on the big story. Who cares if there's a 'wolfman' in Minnesota - remember that parallel universe full of soldiers coming to destroy us all? Yeah, that. Prioritize.

but, for whatever reason this other dimension storyline seems to be dragging a bit. At times it is cool with the typewrite and whatnot, but other times like at the bowling alley it seems like they are milking it. I think i would like to see them speed things up on this a bit more. I don't wnat this storyline to be the show's focus for multiple seasons (should Fox decide to stick with it).

Tonight is a pivotal game. Pettite is clutch in October, while a Sabathia vs. Blanton matchup looms in Game 4. I am not sure I wouldn't bring Lee back with short rest. I think that Cole can get it done tonight, but I don't like Blanton.

  • It was a Summer show; how high were the ratings expectations?<p>Defying Gravity's advertising had a working against the show. The first is obviously the title - just terrible. The second would have to be advertising a sci-fi show as from "the producers of Grey's Anatomy". Sure one might expect the show could get a cross-genre audience; however, you might just cancel each other out (Sci-fi audience dismisses it as a "chick show" while the chick show audience isn't interested in a "space ship show"). I just noticed on IMDB it shows that the final 4 episodes aired in October. Did they? On ABC? Or were they only available on ABC.com?

Never mind the fact that Buffy and Angel had a ton of romantic storylines with 'will they won't they.' Supernatural, in four plus seasons has NEVER, NOT ONCE, had anything remotely resembling a romance plot. SO what do the teen girls watch for? two good looking guys? they can get that on any show... you can't hold that against supernatural... maybe its all the violence, maybe its the classic rock, maybe its the deep mythology rooted in the bible, maybe its the fact that it delivers answers to season long arcs but as soon as you get answers, they make you ask bigger questions. maybe its the fact that there is ONE apocalypse the characters face that has been building up for five years... how many apocalypses did buffy have? maybe its their rough grizzled and emotionally absent father who taught his kids how to kill demons instead of nothing else. maybe its because they understand that killing demons can't be done by just anyone, so they DEVOTE THEIR LIVES to kill evil, instead of going to highschool and cdllege knowing that the fate of the world is up to you but, damn i need to pass my chem test, and that TA is sooooo dreamy.... supercowbell5THECOWBELLHASSPOKEN SAID: " I really think the yankees in the world series is what baseball needed"<br><br>In a sense, that is correct, but for the wrong reasons. It all comes down to $$$ There is an east coast bias on ESPN and everyone in the business of professional sports wants the big markets to get to he playoffs and world series because of ratings. Last years world series ratings were abysmal... but I loved that series because I found the Tampa Bay story compelling--last in the division the year before, world series the next year, and doing it with a tiny payroll and up and coming stars... that was a reason for me to watch. i could really give a shit about phillies/yankees. I don't like PHillies because they get MVPs too often because the park they play in lets them put up huge numbers. Yankees just buy their success and everyone knows it. Way more people will watch this year... its not a stretch to say that the two best teams made it to the world series, but I can't get behind either team.<br><br>I'd rather hear people go overboard with crazy rants and bashing posts about sports than about things like how the transformers movies didn't do a fucking kids cartoon justice. jaysin420: That's what I've been saying--big market teams with big market rivals is what boosts the ratings. As a brewers fan, we only won one playoff game last year, but it made it soooo much easier to swallow to watch the cubs get swept. It was glorius, and the cubs blogs were HILARIOUS (trade ramirez! zambrano is done! soriano is too old! this whole team swings at pitches in the dirt! Pinella has no clue what he's doing! etc.) The cubs fans are downright obnoxious when they come up to milwaukee. Also, hearing ron santo call cubs games one the radio is comedy gold whenever things don't go the cubs way... he moans and groans and contributes nothing of merit.<br><br>Adelai Niska: That's what I was saying my problem is with the phillies--they have four (i think, maybe even five) players with 30 plus home runs. They have MVPs on that team and a big reason is that ballpark. Give Prince Fielder that home ballpark and he would have boosted his stats higher than Pujols... Fielder has been overlooked by Pujols... their stats are right there neck and neck

Man, these "ratings" talkbacks are a hodge podge!

    by Cheif Brody

Baseball, sci-fi, sit-coms, vampires, reality shows...I love how totally random the posts can be here! <p> One of Hercs points in his analysis: <p> "Crazy how CSI is now the weak link between Survivor & The Mentalist"... <p> Not crazy in the least. William Peterson WAS C.S.I.!! I knew that show was doomed the moment he sauntered out of the lab. Even Morpheus can't save that show. If Robert Patrick couldn't save X-Files post Duchovny...Fishburne doesn't have a chance. CBS would be wise to begin bolstering the 'other' CSI's (NY & Miami) with great stories and guest stars...and let the original fade away. <p> "All Gods Children Are Evil" was the message of 30 Rock this week. I thought it was a whip smart commentary on how people are no different ANYWHERE in America. Jack Donaghey's "middle America" theory IS flawed...How else could you explain the success of "Friends" & "Seinfeld"...the shit was funny no matter WHERE you lived in the country. But Tina Fey & the 30 Rock writers KNOW his theory is flawed. They actually pointed the "elitist" jokes evenly in BOTH directions. And what other show on TV has it's main female lead lift her shirt in the first 3 seconds of the episode...and then fart like a "Beagle" a few minutes later? <p> While The Office's "Koi Pond" was hilarious...Pound for pound I laughed harder and longer at 30 Rock...especially when Jenna Maroney ruined the ending of LOST for the geeky writers by innocently telling them that J.J. Abrams once told her the ending of LOST (The island is just Hurley's dream). The look on their horrified, spoiled faces was priceless. <p> With Community & Parks strong outtings...(Abed's Batman/Bale voice on Community was so dead on it was frightening), NBC had the best line up of the night. <p> Until Jay Leno came on.

Every episode of Community goes like this: The main character wants something. Everyone else wants something else. The main character goes after what he wants. Everyone else fails at trying to get what they want causing something to go wrong. The main character is forced to decide to help everyone else and give up what he wants in order to do so, which teaches him an important lesson. In The Big Bang Theory, Leonard is not responsible for what Sheldon does. In How I Met Your Mother, Barney is not responsible for what Ted does (or vice versa). In Cougar Town, Jules is not responsible for what anyone else does. The list goes on...

Top Chef, Project Runway, etc. VS. Network reality...

    by SK229

How come all of the cable reality shows (well, most anyway) seem to have a bit more class and a bigger audience than the network reality shows? Network reality always has a kind of 'trash' or high concept factor to it that makes me think of the shit that would be on Sunday nights back when I was in elementary school and you knew that when there was absolutely nothing to watch, the weekend was effectively OVER. That probably doesn't even make sense... I guess what I'm saying is that shows like Top Chef have an edge and, as much as might seem like an oxymoron, a bit of class while almost all of the network reality shows seem dumbed down and middle-of-the-road.

Yes, the commercials make it look like America's Funniest Home Videos for the Gen-X crowd, but this has me laughing more than any other comedy on TV right now. The episode where he films his studio audience's reaction as he makes them watch "2 Girls 1 Cup"... priceless. I've recommended this show to about half a dozen friends, and they all agree it's awesome. Warning, though, the show is politcally incorrect as hell. Everyone is fair game. After just a few episodes, Community has shot it's way up to the top of my favorite network comedies (title previously held by 30 Rock, which is still good). And, even though this season of It's Always Sunny isn't as completely awesome as the first 3 seasons, it's still definitely worth watching. By the way, on a non-comedy note, Fox is really shooting itself in the foot right now with it's marketing campaign for Fringe. Much of the success of the show's first season could be attributed to the way the show appealed to non-sci-fi fans. Now their promos for the show consist of 30 seconds of disgusting alien goo. Way to reel 'em in Fox.

Not as great as it was during any of it's various peaks. But damn it's still better than 90% of the hour long dramas on tv right now. So frustrating, because it's clearly not a cheap show to produce. Which means it'll probably get canceled at seasons end. Gar!

The first few Grishom-less CSIs weren't very good

    by jim

but it picked up by the end of the season and has continued this season to be an enjoyable show again.

    Did I hear someone say...

    by cheyne_stoking_DMS

Syfy is on par with any other channel on television? Maybe about 10 years ago. Today, you watch "Syfy" if you want to watch professional wrestling and $5.00 syfy originals.

SONS OF ANARCHY has 3 times the viewers as MAD MEN

    by YackBacker

Yet not nearly the same amount of TV critics fellating it on a regular basis. ANARCHY is the most watched cable drama on TV. Respect.

i am sorry but all the CSI series are crap

    by ominus

all those years i was hearing a lot of great things about these series, especially from a girlfiend of mine who was a huge fan of CSI LV. <p>since here, there are 3 greek tv channels who each one plays all 3 csi series, from the oldest to the newest episodes (!!!),i decided to give it a try.So i started, for several weeks now,to watch all the series,a variety of episodes from all the their seasons <p>BIG disappointment,i wont expand on what and why i didnt like, but i will tell you this funny thing: <p>I sat to watch my first CSI episode ever on TV,which happened to be from csi miami.the first impression that it got to my mind, from even the first scenes of the episode, was that i was having a deja vu,i was feeling like i was watching a Bruckheimer movie.man,i told to myself, its like Bruckheimer produced it.so the episode ends, end credits start rolling and then this showed up: executive producer Bruckheimer.oh my fucking god.and i must note that the only clues i had for the csi all these years, was their actors, the general concept and that they were awesome.i didnt know that bruckheimer was behind it. <p>anyway the series are crap.i prefer NCIS,not because its better,on the contrary, but mainly because of that super, uber, ultra hot brunette goth chick with the tattoos.i could die, only to get examined by her.oh boy.

    No apologies necessary...

    by cheyne_stoking_DMS

CSI (of any kind) has always been fluffy shit. Yes, fluffy shit. I don't know how shit could ever be fluffy but they managed. Too bad Larry Fishburne is wasting his time and talent.

    cheyne_stoking_DMS Couldn't Agree More...

    by AngrySnowMonkey

SyFy has regressed in the last couple of years. The SyFy original movies are horrendous--often more comical than sci-fi. And if there are ever any special creature effects needed--look out because this usually features rediculous cheesiness. The SyFy apologists no doubt will trot out BSG as a benchmark of achievement, but that show is history. Now, it is a mixture of roided-out dudes running around in panties, Sasquatch movie marathons and Lance Henrickson schlock. SyFy is a cheesy, second-rate cable network.

And Let's Not Forget SyFy's Little Inbred Brother

    by AngrySnowMonkey

The Chiller Network. This is a completely wasted concept. What was supposed to be the first network with all-day horror. Well, the movie collection they own consists of third-rate drivel that is edited to eliminate signifigant violence and all nudity. And frankly, when your bread-and-butter is low grade slasher flicks, violence and tits is the chief draw. Also, this network also seems to run with really awful canceled TV shows. I like Tales from the Crypt and of the Darkside, but Chiller airs them EVERY DAY. This network should be disbanded and hopefully the next all-horror network will be non-NBC/Universal and will have some balls.

    There's

    by Subtitles_Off

    a "Chiller Network?"

  • Nov. 1, 2009, 6:11 p.m. CST

    Haha yeah dude Chiller sucks...

    by cheyne_stoking_DMS

when it first came on air I thought it was going to be something awesome. Very dissapointed. Syfy was good when it was The Sci-fi Channel (Saturn logo R.I.P). They had a friday night line-up that kicked ass (I recall: Farscape, Invisible Man, Good Vs. Evil), they constantly played the iconic horror movies, and of course they had MST3K on saturday mornings.

SGU = Stargate: Unwatchable, Pauley Perrette on NCIS = HOT

    by turketron_2

I am continuing to watch SGU but things need to PICK. THE. FUCK. UP. Dr. Rush is the only entertaining character on the whole show, everyone else is cardboard as hell and Eli's geekyness is overdone and annoying. His little, "looks like we entered the Hoth system" was groanworthy, and then they had him explain the joke. Ugh, no thanks.<p> The goth chick played by Pauley Perrete on NCIS is the only reason I ever channel surfing if I come across the show. Holy shit that chick is sexy as fuck. There's a picture of her posed topless if you scour bing or google image search for it (safesearch off of course!).

Where is Mercy on this list? I know NBC sucks, but I like that show and it got picked up for a full season. I'm pretty happy!
