Learn Who Plays The Title Character’s Daddy, The God Odin, In Kenneth Branagh’s THOR!!

Published at:  Oct 30, 2009 1:06:56 AM CDT

I am – Hercules!!

The great Anthony Hopkins, who played Nordic King Hrothgar in 2007's "Beowulf," will embody Odin, Nordic King of Asgard, in Kenneth Branagh’s adaptation of Marvel Comics’ “Thor.”

Hopkins joins Natalie Portman ("V For Vendetta"), who plays Thor’s girl Jane Foster, Tom Hiddelston ("Cranford"), who plays Thor’s ne’er-do-well brother Loki, and Chris Hemsworth (George Kirk in the last "Star Trek"), who plays the wielder of the giant hammer Mjöllnir.

Sam Jackson may be back as Nick Fury too.

Branagh directs from a screenplay by Mark Protosevich (“Poseidon,” “I Am Legend”) and Zack Stentz & Ashley Miller (“Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles,” “Fringe”).

Filming gets underway in January in anticipation of Paramount's May 20, 2011 release.

How is it that no one has geeked out about this yet? Branagh keeps putting tremendous pieces in place. This entire movie is packed with Oscar winners and dramatic heavyweights. He is obviously going to give the tale of the Thunder God as much respect as it deserves. Hopkins is a surefire win here.

...look like Clash of the Titans. I do hope they're smart enough to make Nick Fury understand Thor as a powerful superhuman with a giant shithammer who he can use, and who seems to think he's a mythical thundergod, like in the Ultimate comics. Best exchange between the characters: Thor: Sorry I'm late. I was fighting the Midgard Serpent on the Rainbow Bridge. Nick: {Stares at him blankly through one eye.} Thor: No, really. Nick: {smiles, shakes head} Whatever, man. Have a seat. And the movie continues. Anyone wondering how to mix Thor and Iron Man realities? Mark Millar already covered it. Do it, Marvel.

Lizard is not the only baddie appearing in spiderman 4, he will be the main antagonist but Kraven will also appear and will have an expanded role in part 5. With a 4th and 5th movie being shot back to back raimi is more comfortable using two villans as each one will essentially have their own movie (Kraven's appearence in part 4 is only about 10 script pages in total, and only really serves to set him up in spidey's universe)Not sure why AICN hasn't reported it yet but Oded Fehr is in final negotiations to play Kraven, Dylan Baker is of course returning as Doctor curt connors,

Then who else is a villain in 5 along with Kraven? I thought they were going to film 5 and 6 back to back once it was reported that James Vanderbilt was hired to write 5 and 6?

So what, he's just supposed to direct Shakespeare and masterpiece theatre movies? Thor would affect more people (especially young people) than a four hour Hamlet. If Thor is even a moderate hit, I bet it would be seen (and make more money) than all of his other films combined. It's called a career, buddy, you try to advance it. let's refresh

    by star hump

Captain America is not in his mid-40s like Brad Pitt, for Christ's sake. He's a young guy, mid twenties when he hits his prime as Cap. This is perfectly normal. 23 year-olds were commanding bombers in WW II. They were young but still very effective leaders. Cap needs to be a young guy, not motherfucking 45 year-old Brad Pitt.

The same goes with Thor. He is a young, headstrong Norse God. The actor playing him should be in his mid to late 20s (and I believe he is). He should NOT be that old-ass motherfucking Christopher Lambert.

Thank Christ you mental midgets aren't casting these movies. You'd probably cast a 35-year-old to play Spider-Man, a character who shouldn't be a day over 21. Someone like Tobey Maguire. Oh wait...

A totally brilliant cast can still be campy if badly directed. This especially goes for the best actors, as they are more likely to take risks. They are more exciting than 'reliably good'. Remember, casting De Niro in FRANKENSTEIN sounded pretty appealing at the time. But I challenge anyone who has seen that movie to really tell me that it's any good. It's campy fun at best. And campy fun is no good.

    The reason I am disappointed...

    by phimseto

...is because Blessed would have been spot-on and because he's part of Branagh's ensemble of actors that you see in a lot of his films. I like Hopkins but the fact that we heard Blessed's name for a long time and now this smacks of producer-level interference. Is this going to be a by-committee film? It doesn't bode well, if so. I'll go see it (unless the reviews are scathing) but I hugely disappointed that Blessed will not be one of the major supporting roles.

Brian Blessed would have been equally great, but i don't care - Kenneth Branagh is directing a movie about a nordic god superhero: pretty much the best pitch i ever heard. I love Branagh's films (well, a lot of them) so this might be the first watchable superhero film in quite some time (Dark Knight was pretty good (if ridiculous), all others just awful in my opinion)

The last guy who touched on it was right about the sounds, but to put it all together - it is pronounced "MOO-ul-ner." Think of the "j" as a "u" and that's pretty close, and keep the accent on the first syllable (a lot of folks put it on the second, which I have heard is incorrect).

Let's just clear some things up

    by chewbacca_khan

First, Thor is the son of Odin but Loki is not until you get Marvel coming along. Loki was the son of two giants and a foster-brother to Odin, no where in the Norse sagas or Eddas that I've read can I recall anything of Loki being Odin's son. Also, Thor has been played as the 'prince-in-waiting' only recently and Odin's pre-eminence over him was probably exaggerated by the eddaic poets. Thor, in fact, may have once been the principle figure in the pantheon according to some historians and archeological evidence. So the sibling rivalry thing is important only in Marvel Norse mythology.

Second, Natalie Portman haters are just nuts. She's playing Blake's girlfriend, for Odin's sake. It's not like she's Enchantress.

Third, the Nick Fury cameo: What, exactly is the problem with that if it comes at the end of the film a la Iron Man?

Fourth, Hopkins may be a scenery chewer (what older actor isn't just playing themselves? DeNiro? Pacino? Eastwood? Nicholson? They all lapse into at some point) but he'll bring people in and by the time you get some armor and all on him he's going to BE Odin. You also gotta figure he's not in the film that much.

Fifth, whoever said that Branagh has fallen since Henry V and Hamlet obviously doesn't get that this movie needs to be treated EXACTLY like those movies if it has a hope of working. You have to dive into Asgard and Thor as a period setting first, then bring it to the present while maintaining respect, yo.

...Thor, Odin, et al are ancient Norse gods, not Greek. Although Thor did team up and fight with members of other godly pantheons from time to time, such as Hercules of the Greek pantheon, an adventure or two with Horus of the ancient Egyptian pantheon and I think he's also met the ancient Celtic gods as well as the Hindu pantheon. In the Marvel universe, all the ancient gods were actual, existing beings who interacted with us humans from time to time.

a god coexisting in the avengers universe

    by gavinvandraven

in the avengers universe every character except for Thor has a pseudo-science origin. my thought is that outside of his Asgard scenes, nobody will believe Thor is a god... he will just be another superpowered being with a made-up history as far as the rest of them believe. "just nod your head and agree with the hammer man when he talks, ok guys?" after all, storm is a mutant who can control the weather just the same as Thor can, and what is his other power? super strength...? most of his powers would have a logical explanation in the marvel "real world." Thor just comes off as a foreigner who talks funny and insists he once was something he's not, but nobody wants to argue with him, for fear of being smashed with a hammer. keep Asgard and Midgard seperate and it should work just fine.

I'm a big comic nerd and I loves me some comic movies, but Thor is damn near impossoble. Most other comic films ask us to believe in a world that is mostly like our own, but Thor will cram a giant load of Norse mythology down our throats and ask us to swallow it. I can't see any graceful way to handle this, acting talent or not.

But my understanding was this movie is set in both modern world and Asgard. The majority in Asgard but framed by a real world element, which would feature the cameo by Fury. Also, De Niro and Law were considered for the two NY cops (one veteran seen it all sceptic and one younger more willing to believe) who are investigating a strange set of events including a strange blonde haired man who appeared to show up out of nowhere in the middle of a terrible thunder storm.
Also, nobody loves Brian Blessed more than me, but the man is not what he once was, and certainly isn't the Flash Gordon guy of our youth. He is into his 70s now, and probably isn't up to a streneous shooting schedule.

    by claireredfield

Thor and Asgard and all that mythological stuff just have to be kept separate. But DISTINCTLY separate. If they are wise they will make the settings look almost like two different movies. Color saturation, lighting, make-up, effects, all should be different. High fantasy should be high fantasy, and when they come to "the real world" it should be just as jarring to the viewer as it is to the characters. That's how you make it believable. For the doubters: you've NEVER seen a movie where fantastic characters have to fit into the real world that was good or believable? REALLY!? Then you don't belong here.

Loki is the FOSTER son of Thor. The comics, just like some versions of the myths, have Odin kill Loki's Giant father, find this human sized child and adopt him (because he is the son of a king, enemy or not) and raise him back in Asgard.
The comics never made up that sibling rivalry thing, that existed in the myths. Loki & Thor are step brothers.

So we both made two mistakes: I wrote foster brother of Odin and should have written foster SON of Odin; you wrote foster son of Thor and should have written foster son of ODIN.

I still don't recall sibling rivalry (such a modern term) being any motivator for Loki in the myths. He was just a troublemaker-general and had it in for Thor, Odin, Freyja, Idun, and all the gods about equally. Is there a particular myth you can refer to that gives his "jealous brother" act some backing? That's been heavily played in Marvel but I don't recall it at all in the myths.

Plus, (Spoiler!)Kraven actually dies at the end, and you know how executives always insist on the villian dying. They could actually get it right for once! Script

    by berserkr

To all the haters or the writer, Harry said its the best script he has EVER read for a super hero flick, but then again that was of course before the re writes.

Loki is not Odins son in the comics Either, just a foster son, he is still the true Son of Frost giants.

I can't actually name a specific myth where Loki and Thor showed actual sibling rivalry, but there has always been a subtext in the myths of Loki feeling excluded from the other gods and being overshadowed/jealous of Thor, and being a thorn in Thor's side (he is involved in a number of myths where he either is trying to trick Thor, or reluctantly adventuring with him). I could easily see a writer interpret his animosity towards Thor as jealousy and rivalry.

    Ops

    by chewbacca_khan

Yes, their is rivalry but it's never stated that it has anything to do with being his foster-brother. It's just Loki's nature as the outcast, son of Giants and neither Aesir or Vanir. Just as often as he torments Thor he is a travelling companion for Odin and Homir and just as often he gets himself into trouble with giants and gods through his actions.

Interpretation can lead any of that to sibling rivalry but it really wasn't until Marvel that it cropped up and now people seem to think that's what Loki was originally about. That isn't the case, though.

Why such skepticism on Kenneth Branagh?

    by asimovlives

This guy is a really good director. I have hopes for this movie since he was anounced as director. Because before his hiring as director, i couldn't really give a shit. Thor was never one of my favorite marvel heroes. Now with Branagh directing, i can't wait to watch the movie.

    Anthony Hopkins

    by angrysnowmonkey

Remember when he played the stroke victim in Legends of the Fall? First that movie was awful. Second, I belive there was a reference as someone who was eaten by a grizzly bear dying a "good death". Really? No, not my idea of a good death. My once human brain being left as bear droppings, being eaten alive. Hopkins hit the S-can in my book with this movie and never recovered.

    by mandrakeroot

All you douches who actually think he's real and ask him questions like you'll get a legit response...well, you should be ashamed of yourself. And embarrassed. It doesn't even take a half brain to realize this loser is completely full of shit.

Did it not strike anyone as odd that this Jet character has apparently worked/ is working/ is in some way connected to every production in Hollywood? Or the fact that he has douchey pet names for every famous person he "knows".

For such an insider the idiot didn't even know the new spider-man films were not being filmed back to back. You'd think Raimi would have told him at their slumber party last weekend...

I think Oden and Loke were blood brothers according to myth:
"Remember, Othin, | in olden days
    That we both our blood have mixed;
Then didst thou promise | no ale to pour, Unless it were brought for us both." I can't remember it anywhere being mentioned that Thor and Loki are stepbrothers, other than in the Marvel comics. I think the rivalry between Thor and Loki is for the attention/love of Odin. Loki feeling let down since he was closest to Odin once. Oh and I think this casting news will be good for the movie.

    by zombieheathledger

Hasn´t acted in or directed anything worth shit since (his tiny role in VALKYRIE being second best) even Gibson´s and Kline´s Hamlet were better than his. What a waste of a great talent.
