AICN Brings You The World Premiere of Miramax's PRINCESS MONONOKE Trailer in conjunction with Nausicaa.Net!!!
Hey folks, Harry here. In our efforts to bring you the coolest, not in the mainstream trailers. We bring you our second World Premiere trailer for a cool film. The first one was THE BLAIR WITCH PROJECT, this time it is Miyazaki's PRINCESS MONONOKE (aka Mononoke Hime) This has been long in the works and was especially important to Moriarty, who feels very strongly about this film and your pursuit of catching it at a theater near you. Meanwhile, we could not bring you this trailer with out the fantastic cooperation of the good folks at Nausicaa.net, who lept at the chance to host the trailer. If you can CO-HOST this trailer... Great. But know this is the first time it has been seen ANYWHERE! Enjoy this special sneak. Next I'm working on getting you the first looks at the trailers for A SLIPPING DOWN LIFE and MAN OF THE CENTURY. So stay tuned!
"PRINCESS MONONOKE" TRAILER DEBUTS ONLINE VIA AICN & NAUSICAA.NET
Greetings, citizens! Robogeek here. I am proud to announce that AICN, in
cooperation with Nausicaa.net (the
premier Hayao Miyazaki fan site), has been granted permission by Miramax to
premiere the trailer for the American release of "Princess Mononoke" online
(due in large measure to the tireless efforts of AICN's own Moriarty).
As AICN's resident otaku and most devoted Miyazaki worshipper, it is a
great pleasure to share this small peek at this remarkable film, which will
be released nationwide Oct. 29 -- over two years after it broke box office
records in Japan. The American dubbed version features a translation adapted
by Neil Gaiman, and the voice talents of Claire Danes, Billy Crudup, Minnie
Driver, Gillian Anderson, Jada Pinkett-Smith, and Billy Bob Thornton.
This trailer should be released to theaters in the next week or two, but
we hope to have a higher-quality digitization of the trailer available
before then (we're working on it). In the meantime, this will give you a
sense of a.) how Miramax is marketing the film, and b.) the quality of the
voice acting. However, it _nowhere_near_ does justice to the quality of the
animation, which is stunning and spellbinding.
You can download the trailer in QuickTime (Cinepak and Sorenson codecs)
from the following page:

[NOTE: If you can set up a mirror site to host the trailer, please do so
and post the address in Talk Back. We will update this page and the above
address accordingly throughout the weekend.]
Thanks to Moriarty, Miramax's L.A. publicity office, and of course HREF="http://www.nausicaa.net">Nausicaa.net.

So we can keep the 'mirrors' page on Nausicaa.net as up-to-date as possible, if you're putting up a mirror - or taking one down! - please e-mail admin@nausicaa.net, and we'll get the mirrors list updated as quickly as possible.

Hey, all...
I may have been a big help with this, but so was FreeRide. Along with his initial review, he was the guy who dug the tunnel into Miramax in the first place. Just so's you know...
"Moriarty" out. -
I do admit, if it wasn't for Moriarty, AICN probably wouldn't have gotten the trailer from Miramax.

...I may sound like a stuck record, but does anyone know if a release for this film has been scheduled for the UK. Also, given Iron Giant's undeperformance at the US box office, does anyone have info abourt when/if it will be release in the UK. Worrying that I may not get a chance to see these movies is givin me ulcers! If anyone knows the status, please let me know so I can stop gulping down the pepto-bismol.

Well, that certainly was different! I was almost expecting Princess Mononoke to be marketed like some quirky Japanese cartoon, but thankfully I was wrong.
Calling Hayao Miyazaki a "master animator" and "one of the most influential film makers of all time" caught me a little off guard. I wasn't expecting to hear such strong (but true!) words. Especially since the 'preview' that Entertainment Tonight did only mentioned that it was done by "one of Japan's top animators."
I thought the cast was named kinda gratuitously. Like, "Hey, if haven't decided if you want to see this film, maybe your freaky Gillian Anderson fetish will convince you!"
I would really like to see this trailer in wide play in theaters, though. Miramax did a good job, and I think it would get a lot of people interested in the movie who otherwise wouldn't of known about it. -
Spending far too much time delving into the mysteries of science at the Central Rocket Group, I've not seen ANY of the great Anim

I agree with Yusaku. Billing it as a film, rather than a cartoon, is a very promising first step. Frankly, though, I can't wait to see how others react to it now that I've read Moriarity's review. American audiences are used to seeing good guys and bad guys cleared painted (and with a broad brush at that). They are also used to seeing the industrialists as the bad guys and the tree huggers as the good guys. I think I've seen enough anime to have a good idea about what is going to happen and I think this movie has the potential to warp a lot of fragile young minds. ;) Now all Miramax has to do is overcome the same marketing hurdles that hamstrung "Iron Giant".

Oh, and thanks for getting us these!! -
I have some reservations about, well, mainly Claire Danes, but I'm still going to see this because the Japanese version was stunningly beautiful. Anyways, thanks for helping to set this business up.

From Magma Communications Ltd. at http://www.magma.ca the trailers are at: ftp://lavafields.magma.ca/mononoke/princessmononoke_soren.mov (11 MB Sorenson Codec) and ftp://lavafields.magma.ca/mononoke/princessmononoke.mov (7 MB Cinepak Codec). Enjoy. ******* kalgash@magma.ca

All the voices seemed to be very well done, save one... My god, somebody needs to get Claire Danes out of the film business. Her voice is completely jarring in the coming attraction, ripping the viewer out of any possible fantasy world. I can't begin to imagine how difficult it will be to watch the entire movie with her as the Princess' voice. She can't act. She can't do voice-work. The only thing Claire Danes has going for her is a rather nice ass. Maybe her agent can get her into porn.

I know Miramax is in an economic bind to reach the widest possible audience, I know Gaiman is a good writer, I know, I know...but hearing the American actors saying the dialogue still makes my colon clinch. Think of what a kickass trailer it would have been if it were nothing but the massive action scenes, highlighting Miyazaki's gorgeous animation, and some voiceover. In my anime experience, very rarely can dubbing compete with the original voice performances. Sure it's easier here because unlike 'Akira' (which to date is the only anime of this type) the voice acting was not lip-synched to the drawing. Gaiman could have done just as well with a text translation...well, maybe when I see the finished film my fears will be put away. I do think it's cool that this is getting a release of any kind here at all...the only way to get Miyazaki's excellent "Laputa" to this day is by fansub videotapes. "Laputa" kicks so much ass, it would have been as awesome an American release as "Mononoke" could be. Seek it out, you won't regret it.
-
I just spent some time reading through the previous talk backs about this film, and I'm surprised there's not a whole lot of buzz about Neil Gaiman being the writer. I guess it's becuase he hasn't been involved with film or television until recently. For anyone who doesn't know who he his, check out some back issues (or graphic novels) of The Sandman series. It features some of the best stories I've ever read. I don't think they could have found someone better to convey mythology without "dumbing" things down.

Hook it up Harry! -
In the end, he says Mononoke wrong!
He says "MAnonoKI" not MOnonoKE!
"MO" as in Mo' Money not "MA" as in Mark. Its also "KE" as in Kept, not "KI" as in Key!
sigh, oh well... The trailer looked good, the voices didn't bug me to much... I can't wait till it comes out! -
i saw princess M last night,(the print came in early for a press screening)and the critics are right.it is truly a masterpiece!the much talked about dub was NOT that bad(OK BILLY BOB is kinda weak.)the ONLY real problem with the DUB is claire dain's VOICE!!!!!
instead of sounding like a woman who was raised by wolves she sounds like a VALLEY GIRL who missed the off-ramp and ended up in the woods!near the end when she screamed about 'not wanting to be a demon',it sounded more like she was pouting for a ride to the mall!!!!BUT,other then that it was great!!!!
i heard from co-workers that MIRAMAX is taking this wide.it will be interesting to see how it plays!does anyone know if there will be merchendising tie-in's??
i'd love to have a plush wood spirit! -
Considering that my friends and I first saw the Miramax Princess Mononoke trailer six weeks ago at a booth called Screenzone Interactive at a local mall, I wouldn't call this the "world premiere".:) For more info, check out the July 26 update here: (http://www.helsinki.fi/~stvirtan/mh/update.html) for a report by me and someone who lives 3000 miles away...I'd like to have that little bit amended. Anyway, I really appreciate you putting up the trailer on the internet for the first time, and it is indeed an awesome trailer.

I'm so excited about this, I can hardly stand to wait till the end of the month. For those of you fortunate enough to live in SoCal, the UCLA Film and Television archive is having a (duh, subject line) Studio Ghibli film series. The series will include a sneak preview screening of Princess Mononoke!--plus showings of Nausicaa, Laputa, Porco Rosso, and others. God, I love my school sometimes. The series runs from Sept. 30th to Oct. 10th, and screenings will take place on campus at the James Bridges Theatre. Go to www.studentgroups.ucla.edu/anime (the homepage of the UCLA anime club) to read the press release.
-
The only way this movie can be widely received is if we tell as much people about it as we possibly can so this is what we must do: Tell all your friends about Princess Mononoke; Go to chat rooms and tell everyone about it make some buzz and spread the word people I think this ones a winner!
-
If your with me on spreading the word e-mail me at Necromar@hotmail.com
-
god DAMN i love this movie.

In all the (much deserved) fervor over Mononoke Hime, 2 other anime masterworks have been brushed aside. Perfect Blue, Satoshi Kon's breathtaking psychological thriller is also debuting theatrically in the States. A bit of news that I can't believe this site missed is that Manga Entertainment has picked up the rights to the Evangelion movies (Death:Rebirth and End of Evangelion) and plans to release them theatrically as well. It's good to be an otaku.
